I say Hattori saves Lucci. I've read enough Oda to know that he never introduces something without their being a PURPOSE to it, however small, and Hattori has not yet filled a purpose.
Chapter 421 "Gear 3rd" Discussion
-
-
That is true. And it is interesting that a bird continues to sit on the shoulder of a Lepord-man. (As well as drinks from a glass, wears pimpin style jackets and a tie, etc…(And didn't Luffy target Hattori when he first saw him?)
-
Am I the only one who's noticed that the script for 421 is not, in fact, up on that page?
It's up now…
He gets monstered by Jyabura but he's going to beat a VA from the Marine HQ?
Are we reading the same manga? The one where it's stated in not so subtle ways "USOPP CAN'T FIGHT FOR SHIT"?
While I agree that Usopp wouldn't fight an Admiral, I have to also agree that we do read different mangas, and I'm glad I'm reading a different one, yours sounds crappy. XD
And I never thought I'd say this, but I really wish you all would just stop talking about Usopp so much, it's getting really old and irritating.
Not to be offensive, but can't some of you think "Maybe Luffy CAN'T beat Lucchi".
There's a 0.09% chance of that happening. While in some cases Luffy doesn't win, it's in a very particular setting, and someone he hasn't really purposed himself to defeat for a grand reason. You know that when Luffy wants to beat Lucci as badly as he does, he will defeat him alone, just like Kuro, Arlong, Krieg, Crocodile, Bellamy, and Enel.
-

Yeah, well not all versions can be as thrilling as yours where Usopp plays the role of the hobbit or whatever.
Also, we're not breaking any rules when talking about him, no bashing or anything, or maybe a new rule has just been created, "NO DISCUSSION ABOUT USOPP ALLOWED?" Anyway he was just a minor subject of discussion of this thread.
Seems like you're just annoyed cause some are criticising your object of fandom. Well next time I'll be sure to have nothing but nice things to say about him and wonder if he's getting laid by Nami or not, I swear. No really, I do.

You know it.

I was giving my opinion, not a mod order. That is allowed too, isn't it?

Actually, most of my annoyance is towards those who just keep swaying the coversation back to him right in the middle of something else, like "hey, Usopp hasn't fought yet, this is bad. HEY WHAT ABOUT USOPP?! USOPP?!" Not actual criticism. I just love how you spout any kind of abrasive opinion you feel like but if someone dares reply to it it's like, "OMG NO how dare you respond?!"
-
All I'll say is, why would Oda have Luffy put so much emphasis on "I'm the designated big-time ass-kicker" if only to have him be unable to beat Rob Lucci, the one guy that only he can beat?
-
Hatori has already served a purpose. He was the voice for Lucchi while undercover in Water 7 for 5 years. Nothing More. He doesn't have a devil's fruit or anything else. Oda said it himself. He enjoys drawing animals doing weird things.. Thus his jacket, drinking, tie, etc.
-
I think kabuto's secret is a wind dial or something that allows the ammo to fly further, faster, and with more accuracy.
I'm thinking it has a Reject Dial in it because that would greatly enhance the power. Plus, it's a slingshot type thing, so maybe it can absorb the Reject when it kicks back. It also long, which means it provides pretty good range too if he needs to smack someone with it in close combat. Also, the reject could be used to fire larger projectiles with more power and greater distances.
I thought I'd drop my prediction here on Lucci … he's either toast, or definitely toast by next chapter. He looks done though. I think I'm going with the guys who said that if Luffy can't take him out then it would basically going against Luffy's dream of becoming the strongest. This whole douriki thing etc. would also be pointless. Oda has very nicely organized a tier for us to see where everyone is at respectively with the douriki points system. Luffy has obviously separated himself from Zoro and Sanji, while those two have also separated themselves from the rest of the crew. Ah well, I better get back to work I'm slacking. I can't wait for the spoilers for Ch. 422.

I didn't know about any OP sites during Skypeia so when Sanji didn't get a real battle back then I didn't really care cause he had his badass moment against Enel. In fact Ussop + Nami tag team against Enel was probably the coolest battle during that arc, and most badass moment since it showed off just how strong Ussop and Nami were despite their roles on the ship.
Then I come here and I find out everyone says Sanji is a punk without a fight for 2 arcs that loses to a girl (wtf?)
So next arc in 6 months or so, when Ussop gets a battle, and everyone's forgotten this crap they'll be like oh Ussop sucks he's getting beat up by Laffite and Franky stole his battle against Van Auger, but then 4 chapters later he owns Van Auger who has defeated Franky, thus making Ussop Frankys savior, and this forum breaks down because it doesn't have enough bandwidth for all the fanboysim.Honestly… even the mods have noticed it, but are mature enough to let it continue because it doesn't bother them, the Ussop talk has gotten too paracitic on this forum.
-
Reffi, what the hell is paracitic?
other than that I pretty much agree with your post.

Yeah, that's pretty much hitting the mark–fanboyism and character hate block and guide judgement. Usopp hasn't done something for awhile and some people think that he'll never do it again.
Honestly, couldn't all that's happened so far be a red herring for when Usopp actually does that awesome act. An underdog has to lose a few times to make his win mean something.
I think that Sanji speech about "forfiling your role" is not just foreshadowing but also a theme in the CP9 fights.
-Nami couldn't fight Kumadori, so Chopper steped in.
-Sanji couldn't beat Calipha, so Nami stepped in.
-Zoro can't break the cuffs, so Chopper helps out. Also, he couldn't find the -place without the others helps.
-Chopper couldn't get the keys, so Nami and Franky took over.
-Usopp can't fight Jyabura, so Sanji steps in.
-Luffy can't reach Lucci on his own, so Chimney helps him out.
-Franky can't beat Lucci, so Luffy steps in.
-None of the other crewmates could reach Robin in time, so Usopp pelts the marines with exploding stars. And I'm sure they'll be more of this pattern until the end of the arc. Also, Luffy will most likely be the one of beat Lucci, that's his role. If he doesn't he'll end up sacrificing his usefulness in this arc.
-
This whole arc is centered most around Robin, second around Ussop - I don't think it's a coincidence that Robin and Ussop are also the only two fighters who have yet to have a "versus" chapter title and an "improvement" chapter title
People should know Oda well enough by now that he is going to give Ussop a great moment to shine in this arc and it hasn't happened yet. It may or may not be what people are wanting in the end, but it will be there. All this Ussop doom saying is just so obviously wrong its about ridiculous. I think it probably more or less stems from frustration because Oda is really dragging out that special moment, but it will get here eventually if people just have patience.
-
And I see my post totally backfired, everyone is going on about the same things with Usopp again. XD Oy vey.
You know, on the Hattori thing, I think people are probably putting way too much thought into it, but I wouldn't be surprised if there turns out to be something surprising about him. Not like, he's a big powerful DF user with Rokushiki or anything though. I still think it's going to turn out that he can talk on his own or something.
-
I still keep thinking hes going to turn out to be a DF weapon like Spandam's sword. They were bragging about how far they'd come with DF technology earlier were they not? So it'd make sense to me to outfit Lucci with a little something extra in case they actually came across somebody who was naturally as strong as thier strongest fighter.
-
Very very late reply to the "Is Lucci finished" debate (sorry, been on vacation):
He can't be done with, for one single reason: If he is finished, he'll fall into the sea and die, since no one will see/rescue him. And we all know the odds of that happening. On the contrary, I want a fuse fuse fruit for hattori!! Flying Leopard-Pidgeon monster FTW.

-
Or he might just bounce off one or more of the ships.
Lucci: AAhhhhhh!
Bounces off 1 ship
Lucci: Aaaaaahhh!
Bounces off 3 more
Lucci: Aaaaahhh!
Bounces off the other 6, lands in front of SpandamSpandam: Nice routine, but points off on the landing. Holds up a 9.5
Lucci: Screw you, chief! Faints

You know, based on Lucchi's trajectory, and the way the Buster Call ships were moving, Lucchi may have just been blasted right into a BC ship

So getting the keys to Franky by shooting them against the wind and shooting Spandam in his face are not great moments?
I normally HATE Usopp, and he actually finally did something semi-badass!!!
-

Not enough. Everybody has helped everybody to finally get the keys to Robin, Ussop is the one that got the final delivery, but it was Chopper's hardwork that gathered most of them, Nami that got them from him and passed them on, and then Sanji that saved Ussop so he could deliver them in the first place. That was a nice moment to be sure, but it's hardly enough.
He will still get his "versus" chapter, and he will still get his "upgrade!" chapter as well - it may or may not be as glorious as some people want, but he will get his time in the sun nonetheless. He's a long ways from done.

Seriously, in all seriousness let's be serious here, Cosmic. MY version is the more superior. scoffs and guffaws at your pansy Usopp

I see Lucchi either using Geppou to float where Spandam is to regain his wind and wait for Luffy to show up or a great opportunity for one of the VAs to swat Lucchi out of mid-air, mistaking him for enemy fire.

FINALLY!!!
From Romance Dawn to chapter 421, I am officially caught up in the storyline!
I've heard bits and pieces about the Water 7 and Enies Lobby arcs in various One Piece discussion threads, but not enough to know about the general storyline (hell, I remember stumbling across one of the dozens of Luffy vs. Usopp AMV's on YouTube, but I never understood why they were fighting as if they were enemies, until now). However, now that I've read through the manga and seen the story unfold for myself, I've been completely blown away!
I've always said to myself that Oda has a strange habit of surpassing his previous story arcs, and this arc has proved it yet again! A constantly-increasing cast of colorful characters (damn, that's a lot of "C's") that includes Franky (he'd be right at home with the Strawhats), new DF abilities, Luffy's Gear power-ups, and drama that not only tugs your heartstrings, it rips them out of your torso!
Speaking of drama, despite it being old news by now, the whole conflict between Luffy and Usopp was unexpected and sad, but I understand Oda wanting to bring to light that the journey wasn't going to be all sunshine and roses. It's just like Zoro said: "It's a captain's burden." Luffy experienced for the first time that the decisions he makes on the road to One Piece won't always have positive effects on his crew. The bright side of all this is that Luffy really wouldn't mind having Usopp back on the crew. Despite it being obvious that he'll most likely be back, I've been asking myself if he really would (Oda has pulled off bigger surprises in the past)?
Then there's the story of Nico Robin, who's past had been a mystery up until the Enies Lobby arc started. Once, when I was trolling around a OP manga discussion forum, I heard about how her homeland was completely wiped out and that she had a ridiculously high price on her head since she was eight (though that was revealed before Water 7), but I had no idea HOW all this happened!
Like I said…... I only knew bits and pieces.
I found Robin's past to be really, REALLY depressing. Aside from losing everything and everyone she ever knew, everybody (excluding the archaeologists, Saul, and her mother, Olvia) treated that poor girl like shit! Despite the lack of knowledge about the Gorusei (sp?), the fact that they marked Robin simply because she can read Poneglyphs says a hell of alot about them! After Ohara was destroyed, things just got worse because everybody and their mothers were trying to get a piece of that hefty bounty! Everyone, except for Crocodile, whom she worked with for some time to further her Poneglyph research (besides, Croc doesn't count, 'cuz he doesn't trust ANYBODY).
In the most recent chapters, I actually found myself feeling more sympathetic towards Robin than the other Strawhats! When that bastard, Spandam was smacking her around while she was defenseless, I was SO hoping he would recieve the comeuppance he so richly deserved, so it pleased me when Robin opened up a industrial-strength, family-sized can of Bitchslap on him after he got sniped by Sogeking (even though he really deserved FAR worse)!
I know, I'm ranting quite a bit, but I've been reading One Piece nonstop over the past month and a half (I left off in the middle of Skypiea a while back), so it's pretty much been my obsession! Can you blame me? I mean, Oda is such an amazing storyteller who has convinced me just how cool super-stretching really is, and now that I'm all caught up, I can join in the discussion with everybody without fear of spoilers or feeling left out of the loop!
QUESTION: Approximately, how long does it take for a new chapter of OP to be released on the net? With the Buster Call in effect, everybody scrambling to evacuate, and Lucci getting SUPER-SUCKERPUNCHED out of that building (though I doubt the fight is over), I'm REALLY anxious to see what happens next!
And I'm done!
-

A text-script of the chapter (called spoilers) usually shows up around Tuesdays, while the actually chapter will be posted on the front page and in the forums anytime between early Thursday morning to Friday. So it takes about a week for it to be posted unless Oda takes a week off or a double issue (this doesn't mean two chapters a week, just more content in the Weekly Jump) is realeased.
Edit: Oops, I went off-topic. Go here

You know, based on Lucchi's trajectory, and the way the Buster Call ships were moving, Lucchi may have just been blasted right into a BC ship
Shouldn't the ships be viewable on the last spread, then? And Besides, the BC ships are so large that Lucci would hit their hull, not deck-and he doesn't seem to fly so fast that he'll break through…
And besides, the BC ships could've stopped moving, and just bombard EL from where they are. It works great so far. -
The Buster Call? Well, since the Mugiwara Kaizou-dan escaped to another spot away from the Buster Call, it sure means that they're afraid of it because of its divine strenght, but that's no surprise. Buster Call is pwnaging.
To SemiJuggalo: You say that Oda has a tendency to make the next arc even better than the arc before that? I disagree. The Enies Lobby Arc is the worst arc. I didn't even like the point where Kaku ate the Akuma no Mi fruit, damnit.
I mean, CP9 is divine, the arc itself is killer and everything is great, but all of the fights are more or less a fucking mess, and the Arabasta Arc, the Eneru or Skypiea arc and even the Water Seven arc is much better than Enies Lobby.
What pulls it downhill? The fights! When the Franky Brothers are storming the Enies Lobby opening door, the fights are crappy and it's all a mess.
-
@CP9:
The Enies Lobby Arc is the worst arc.
I don't know should I agree or disagree with you right now… maybe I more agree. They fight, fight, fight and fight in the arc so much. EL has lasted a bit too long.
Okay, I liked Zoro's and Sanji's fights, but that's all.
-
@CP9:
Mugiwara Kaizou-dan
Akuma no Mi fruit@CP9 Encore
Just a helpful hint, feel free to ignore if it isn't my place, but sometimes your japanglish doesn't make sense, maybe i'm being too picky, and if so, i apologize
Mugiwara Kaizoku-dan, there's another k in there, kaizoku = pirate
Akuma no Mi = devil fruit, adding fruit behind it is like saying devil fruit fruitIn terms of the Luffy vs. Lucci fight, i'm not sure what'll happen, but i'd prefer it to be over, and for Lucci's unconscious body to land in front of Spandam. however, if it's not over, i wouldn't mind another chapter of all Luffy vs. Lucci fighting like Zoro and Sanji got :) I'd like to see some more of Lucci's moves, w/ him having the highest douriki, i was hoping he'd show the coolest variations of rokushiki. Unfortunately, this wouldn't progress the story, at least, not the bigger story IMO, so i doubt this'll happen next. we'll probably get a little of everything again, like we did in this chapter.
-
I am grateful since you corrected me, I'm writing a 100-200-page One Piece novel and so far I've used the term "Kaizou-dan" the entire time…. I am glad that you corrected me before I used it another 15 pages, seriously.
Regarding your words about the Lucchi vs. Luffy fight, I doubt anything big in this fight will happen next time. It's so classic and cliche'd in shounen manga, as the main villain gets badly hit he seems to die, but regains power and backs up.
In chapter 422 and 423 the fight will continue and most likely end in 424. It's something I predict, and it better not have anything with Hattori to do, rofl.
-
I noticed this just now:
Oda made Franky unlock Robin, and now… Franky and Robin are separated from the rest of the crew.... So what? They are just the keys to the ancient weapons!!!!! I sense Oda's plot twist in the air !!!!
[]s
-
to those that keep saying Lucci is ok because he is blocking, look at the end of the recent episode, 273 and the blueno fight…
also cosmicdebris if you met someone in real life that looked very much like usopp, would you fall into a fangirl state and think he is sexy?
-
Wow, the Enies Lobby haters have emerged from their hiding places! I knew it! I bet they all think Reverse Mountain is just the greatest thing EVAR!
Don't hate the arc, children! Instead, hate…strawberries. They despise you.On topic, it seems highly likely that if Lucci did somehow survive the Giant Pistol, he could easily use Geppou…he does seem to be quite adept at it. But I just don't see what other development Oda could use to make it interesting. I mean, we've already seen "HOLY SHIT GEAR 2!" and "HOLY SHIT GEAR 3!" so what's left? Someone needs to save Nami-san and put the fear o' God into ol' Spanda.

We've seen Gear 3, but we have hardly seen the extent of it.
Just think, if that's what Gomu Gomu pistol –-> Giant pistol, think of what some of Luffy's other attack would be like in Gear 3
-
Hmmmmm…..would it be possible for a Gomu Gomu no Giant Balloon? That could deflect more than one cannonball...
-
@IT'S:

Well, since Gear 3 is using hard bones, a Gomu Gomu no Giant Balloon would probably do more harm then help. Because the cannonballs probably won't bounce has well and just explode on Luffy's body. That's just my take on it though.
-

Leopard Lucchi was able to block the same move to such a degree, that all it caused was a little mouth-blood. We don't even see him bleeding after the Giant Pistol.
Besides, the point is that since Lucci is visibly still blocking he's still concious - and It isn't likely that Oda'll use the collapse-as-an-after-effect gimmick twice in a row. -

To me it seems the bones aren't hard, just huge. If they were hard, the gear wouldn't work.

No, it seems hard to me. That's what makes the move dangerous. Do you think it'd KO Lucci if it was literally just a big rubber balloon? No, it's dangerous because it's BONE. Even if rubber bone… mallable, but still hard.

The way I see it, Gear 3 is like inflating a tire, with the "baloon"/ whatever it's called in english being Luffys Bones, and the Leather being his skin. And we all know that an inflated tire is larger, and harder than one without air in it.
he doesnt have to use it, as lucci will just fall into the ocean, could be the effect of using tekkai, gets frozen in that stance after being knocked out
1: If he falls into the ocean he dies. And he won't. And ther are no visible ships nearby.
2: Nothing indicates it so far. Jyabura may be the only one with a completely mobile tekkai, but the others have always activated theirs seamlessly. -
and anyone else think luffy may have learned tekkai too? could be apart of gear 3, using tekkai on his big arm to make it really tough
I wouldn't say Gear 3 has anything resembling Rokushiki, since it uses completely different mechanics.
Tekkai's more like tightening your muscles until they're harder than iron. It's logically possible, but not probable in real life.
-
Especially not for a rubber man.
-
i would imagine Luffy has some control over how rubbery and how hard his rubber can become. i mean, it would be pretty silly if his rubber punches were as soft as marshmellows :p
my guess is that the Giant Pistol is really intended to be as powerful as a giant's fist, also look at the destruction of the building, there's great force behind that punch :)
anyways, we'll know the result in a few days or even hours if the spoiler comes out soon ^_^

Agreed. Have you ever gotten hit in the head with a rubber bouncy ball? It's not delightful. So imagine that times about a million for Luffy's Giant Pistol. ^_^

If Luffy uses gear 3rd then falls into the ocean, does he float?
-
If Luffy uses gear 3rd then falls into the ocean, does he float?
Probably not since his strength will be sapped as soon as he touches the sea water. Secondly, I can't imagine that Gear 3 is very light.
