That's a pretty excellent idea, though the idea of Usopp strangling a fantastic and strong main villain with his slingshot while shouting "I HAVE A LONG NOSE AND I PWN YOU CP9!11!1!!" would crack me up more than Mr. 2…. dancing a disco.
Chapter 421 "Gear 3rd" Discussion
-
-
Maybe a suprise M. Night twist wear under the mask sogeking is really Spandam
-
Spandam is the villain, but no one gives a damn about him. The only one who knows his name is Franky, who pronounces it wrong, and maybe Robin. And he's just as insignifigant to the Buster Call, I'm willing to bet. I wouldn't say Lucci was a lackey or bland, and in fact Oda seemed to have had a little more potential for all of CP9. But I guess they all just got moved aside.
I'm not so sure about that. Spandam's own abilities may be insignificant before the Buster Call's power, but because Spandam has the authority to call forth such power, that makes him powerful and significant. Authority is also power remember.
I liken Spandam to George Dubya Bush. They both share the same low level of intelligence. They were both able to acquire their positions positions because of daddy. And with both, if it were not for the authority they hold, they'd be insigificant dumb little nobodies, who practically anyone would be able to take in a fight.
People fear George Dubya Bush because of the authority he has to bring a country under the full might of the US military and bomb the shit out of it. Likewise, Spandam is feared because he has the power/authority to bring an island under the full might of a Buster Call fleet and bomb the shit out of it.
-
That's a good comparison Chubbychez, strength doesn't always equal power, sometimes u got to pull strings and cheat
-
@CP9:
Robin & Usopp vs. Spandam would be one of the best battles evar.
There's still people expecting Spandam to put up a good fight against whoever would feel like kicking him in the nads?
He showed zero ability to even threaten Franky or Robin, and Zoro, Sanji and Sogeking are coming his way. There's no fight against Spandam in the making, people. Not to mention it would serve zero purpose, storywise.
As for the fact people should fear him because he holds the power to unleash a Buster Call, I think it's giving him too much importance. He was allowed to conjure a BC by a higher authority, and a real power, Aokiji. It doesn't change anything really to his status of useless git with delusions of grandeur.
-
Chopper tied onto Kokoro's hat cracke me up.
-
Just finished reading the chapter and all i can say is wow. LOL, i guess we know what happens if chopper ever goes Chopzilla again.
-

I guess you and I see things differently. With Spandam, while you may see only the man, I see an authority with the power to command an entire island with thousands of marine troops, the power to command the WG's most elite assassins, and the power to annihilate an entire island (yes, he was given this power by a higher authority, but that still doesn't change the fact that he has such power). And if his plans to obtain the ancient weapons were to ever come to fruition, that would have made him an even greater power.
IMO, the only way to truly defeat such a man, is to strip away his power by defeating all that he has authority over, which includes the Buster Call.
If anything else it would be symbolic. Part of the WG's power comes from its authority. By defeating Spandam and his authority, the mugiwaras will have shown the WG that not even the power of authority means a thing to them.
-
Wow. No love for Kumadori. :( His body isn't even shown along with the others.
-
For those who doubt spandam can put up a good fight, I have ONE word, two syllables: Frank-fried. Good storytellers, ESPECIALLY oda, do not introduce wierd and wacky weapons to no purpose. We got hints at Kabuto's hidden power, I'm sure Frankfried is also a powerful force to be reckoned with. Whoever fights spandam will have to get through the elephant, and I KNOW that's not gonna be easy.
-
Plot twist, anyone? What if Luffy goes all-out and doesn't knock out Lucci? After all, these new attacks are still in the development stages… can anyone else see Luffy collapsing after giving his all and not defeating Lucci, only to be saved by his nakama somehow? Maybe Robin will get it together after seeing Luffy in trouble, catch Lucci by surprise, and dunk him in the ocean. She does owe a lot to him now as a crew member, and will come to her captain's rescue.
Just by the last panel, seeing Lucci take that attack in his Tekkai stance, I think the possibility is open that Luffy will not win this fight, at least not on his remaining power. Then again, I think back to the whole shounen cliche, and Luffy winning in the next chapter is likely.
Yea but that sort of goes against what Luffy was going for. He made up those new attacks to be stronger than everyone so he could be able to protect his crew, no matter how strong or weak they are or could be. That would be a slap to the face if the captain was saved by his crew.

So you're saying, all of the sudden, using Funk Fried, Spandam's gonna have swordsmanship nearly on par with Hawkeye, and be the toughest opponent the Strawhats have ever faced.
I'd say he'll run away like a sissy, laugh like an idiot, and then sink like a n00b. Then Sogeking will save Funk Fried and have a new weapon; okay, maybe not really.
-
Just for the record, i would love to see the main villian fights mixed up a touch, it does get repetative and boring to see the 'hero' always fighting the main villian. it wouldn't hurt the plot at all for luffy to be otherwise detained or busy every once in a while.
-
I really don't see Lucci as the boss of this arc at all. He's just one of a group of assassins that the WG uses to do its black ops dirty work. He's a nasty piece of work, yes, but he's fairly insignificant in the grand scheme of things.
Spandam is the head of CP9. Again, just a black ops assassin organization. He's not even as physically powerful as the weakest of his team. He's not particularly intelligent, but he does have a certain crafty slyness that has served him well up to now. But as the main villain of the arc, eh, no.
CP9 is not really equipped to take out a pirate crew as tight and well organized as Luffy's. Their specialty is probably assassination of single political targets, not law enforcement. The marines and the Shichibukai are what the WG usually uses to take out pirates.
I really don't know why Ao Kiji got CP9 to use the Strawhats in their scheme to get the Pluton plans from Iceburg. Was he trying to neutralize Robin? Was he trying to destroy the Strawhats entirely? Was he trying to destroy CP9? What was his motivation for giving the Buster Call to Spandam and telling them about the Strawhats being in Water 7?
As for the boss of this arc, it's the Buster Call.
Arlong = Nami's monster
Crocodile = Vivi's monster
Buster Call = Robin's monsterLuffy will save the day somehow, Usopp will regain his confidence in his abilities, and Robin will be a Strawhat for life. And Oda will surprise me with how he does it.

I believe the main villain in this arc is actually Spandam instead of Lucci. Lucci is the strongest fighter, but all the evil is organized, um, I mean improvised by Spandam. Luffy probably won't touch Spandam, and it'll be someone else who finishes him off.
The Buster Call itself is just a tool.

Kabuto's secret is that it "ate" the mouse Devil Fruit. It will soon face off with Funk Freed in the ultimate battle of nature.

There are times when I consider comparing One Piece segments to current political situations, but don't out of repect of other members differing political views. That way, both Bush hating liberals and Bush backing conservatives can still have a fun civil discussions without insulting each others differing views on current politcial situations.
-
Kabuto's secret is that it turns Sogeking into Moses and splits the oncoming wall of water so that everyone can pass through.
-
you know, it sounds a joke but i have it on good authority (meaning i just made it up but it's super plausible) that the sea will be parted by Usopp using Kabuto, he'll shoot a firebird star, parting the ocean temporarily to enable the mugiwara to pass through.

Pretty much exactly what I think. That deserves a +1.
-
Zoro parted Aqua Laguna with Luffy if I recall correctly. So I'd assume he may help out if it comes down to something like that.
-
Wait…what if the "boss" of this arc really IS Spandam, and its been hidden the entire time? Maybe he has a devil fruit ready. Or he ate a devil fruit previously and wasn't mentioned (which is illogical considering Spandam's Doukiri reading.) OR the devil fruit actually allows him to disguise his strength.
-
About the fact Spandam has the Golden snail thing, its only my thought by how about him obtaining it by picking it from the floor when Ao-Kiji said he doesn't need it? After seeing Ao-Kiji's personality it's not impossible.
BF and the one who translated the chapter, thanks very much C=
BTW, finally decided to post after somewhat time of reading here. :9

OMG, there are still Bush supporters out there j/k
Anyway, I'm not about to apologize to anyone for my political views. And if some people happen to be offended by them, then all I have say is, those people are just way too easily offended.
Though I do agree that for the sake of this thread's sanity, maybe I should have chosen a different analogy, one which doesn't carry such a risk of turning this thread into another political debate (I don't think any of us wants that). At the time however, the Bush/Spandam analogy was the best, most apt one I could come up with.

as USELESS as the dog of the priest Ohm
as USELESS as hattori the pidgon
as USELESS as my useless reply to you trying to explain the uselessness of useless things in One PieceOuch, that's some chip on your shoulder. Hell, that dash-hund was a major weapon to Mr. 4, what are you talking about there? Meanwhile, that dog had some team attacks with Ohm. Hattori…who knows, I imagine he might fight chibi Luffy--the fight of the century.
That elephant is going to do something, even if it's just a One-hit KO from Robin or Ussop. That elephant sword will probably be Spandam's last defense, he's already used it against Robin once.
Also, please save the "useless" for the narutards... (they use that damn word like 'and')
-
First and foremost, thanks to BattleFranky and eblob88 for the raw acquisition and translation respectively.
The appearance of Third Gear reminded me of Tetsuo's arm during his transformation at the end of 'Akira'. I still occaisionally get nightmares about that scene. I am not sure if Luffy will shrink as a result using Third Gear. I think he just let out a little too much air out when he broke down the door to get to Lucci. However, it is unclear how long Luffy can retain the inflation of his bones. Extra pressure on your blood or bones, especially internally, is dangerous whether or not you're a rubberman.
I am of the opinion that Lucci is not finished yet. I think game2005 gave a very good assessment of the splash pages that accompanied the defeat of several villains. Another person also mentioned the trend of chapters titled after a character introduces a new technique also featuring the defeat of a CP9 character. The one exception to both of these rules is probably the Franky and Fukurou fight. That splash page was at the end of one of the intermittent chapters and the actual finish of the fight came a chapter or two later. It seemed like that fight was over with, more or less, a single, strong punch.
My only other counter to the argument is when Sanji nearly broke Blueno's tekkai on the Sea Train. (http://groups.msn.com/onepiecemangav-2/onepiece374.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=4329)
His eyes glaze over, but only as a sign that he is stunned. My guess is that Lucci is stunned and his tekkai was probably broken. I am not sure he will be able to recover quick enough to geppou away from the water, but that segues into my other thoughts. As a number of people have mentioned, Blueno and Kumadori are both absent from the CP9 knockout picture. Blueno could take several routes if he has regained conscious. He could grab the other CP9 agents (or ignore them all) and escape somewhere. The other option is to use his Air Door ability and catch Lucci before he hits the water. It would need to be done quickly, but I wouldn't rule it out as impossible. I also think it would provide a chance for an intermission. Luffy must defeat Lucci to prove he can defend his crew, but the Buster Call has really taken the spotlight away from this fight and made the story a bit confusing. Although the crew should be able to handle themselves, as Luffy said, it would be nice if they could all focus on the Buster Call (whether they want to avoid or fight it). Afterwards, Lucci could reappear for a third round battle on which readers could really concentrate.
I feel like the giants, Galley-La, and the Franky Family will need to find a ship to get off the island as they are currently looking for an escape route. I believe Kumadori is probably on that island and everybody's favorite Kabuki Quantum Fighter might be willing to help the group (as a favor to his dear old mother perhaps). I would like to see the CP9 evade the Buster Call, but I personally think they will need to evade in the same way that the Mugiwara crew will have to.

lol…And it would be even better if later on down the line, Usopp takes out a giant with a slingshot. And then at the end of the story he will be crucified.
On a (slightly) more serious note, I don't believe that he's really immobile. I think he just exaggerated so that Sanji and Zoro would carry him.
-
Usopp taking out a giant with a slingshot? It would be intresting. But one thing I never noticed with this chapter before I thought about it. All of us were wondering: is Sogeking/Usopp re-joining the Mugiwara Kaizou-dan?
Of course he is! The way Sanji and Roronoa Zoro is carrying Usopp is like the carrying of a fellow nakama! I know he's adressed as Usopp and they're acting like he's a part of their crew, a fellow nakama, before this, but this is rare…
I just wonder, is Luffy going to make an uproar towards Usopp when he joins?
-
Lucci will come back, but then get pw0ned somehow. Although I don't think there is as much emotion in this battle as there was with Enel, Croc, Arlong, etc.
I thought Chopper vs Kumadori had more emotions. But whatever it is, I don't really want the fight to continue. Afterall, Lucci isn't Robin's nightmare or anything, the way Arlong is to Nami. There's so much more interesting things ahead of this fight. And am I the only one who hope that Hattori is nothing more than a pet or mascot?
Back when Jayabura fought Sanji Jaybura mentioned that he was the only one who could do Tekkai while still in motion. Why couldn't Lucchi do it also considering that Lucchi is nearly twice the physical strength of Jaybura?
This is my guess. You are referring to Tekkai Kempo right? I think it is a special set of martial arts moves and only Jyabura masters it. It is about techniques rather than physical strength.
@Hunky:
I can understand that they didn't show Blueno with all the defeated CP9, but why did they not show Kumadori?
Kumadori was being thrown to the courthouse or somewhere around there. Hence his situation is like Blueno's, in other words they are far away from the tower of justice.
Yeah, I'd perfer for another charcter like Zoro or Sanji to fight the main villian atleast once. Even DBZ had someone else fight the main villan
Mihawk is saved for Zoro. I don't know about Sanji though. While Luffy has disadvantages fighting swordsmen, he doesn't face any problems with martial artist.
@CP9:
Yes, I'd love for Sogeking/Usopp to engage in the possible fight between Nico Robin and the actual leader of the CP9(for those who thought it was Lucchi), Spandam… Robin & Usopp vs. Spandam would be one of the best battles evar.
Or not, it depends if they actually co-operated, or Robin used Fleur all the time as Usopp/Sogeking watched from the sidelines and fired tabasco stars and throwing stars from his amazing arsenal.Imo that would make Usopp look even more pathetic. I mean he needs to team up with someone to defeat a 9 doukuri (sp?) guy??
-
That post made me tremble, "zero-chan"… I mean, the first big sentence where you were mentioning Hattori, the pigeon that Lucchi wears. I'm indeed afraid myself, if there's a fight between Giant Hattori and Monster Chopper...
.... I'll start reading the Zoro Arc from tankobon 2.
-
@CP9:
Usopp taking out a giant with a slingshot? It would be intresting.
I think there's actually a pretty good chance of that one happening. I have a decent theory of what a trip to Elbaf would be like.
But one thing I never noticed with this chapter before I thought about it. All of us were wondering: is Sogeking/Usopp re-joining the Mugiwara Kaizou-dan?
People are still wondering that? I thought it was pretty obvious from the very beginning that he is going to rejoin.
-
Of course it was obvious because he was the fourth and one of the most important recruits of the Mugiwara Kaizou-dan, and he's the best friend of Luffy, but after the events in Chapter 332 and 33, people wondered.
-

What are you talking about? I don't remember mentioning anything about Hattori turning giant. I just hope that Hattori is insignificant and that it doesn't return to fight Luffy or anybody so that the actual story can move on.
Sorry if my English sux in my previous post. I hope I am clearer this time.
-
I just thought I would raise the question; what purpose would it serve to not have Lucci be KO'ed?
To me, having Gear 3 fail to deliver the KO defeats it's purpose for even being there. The thing about it is that it is supposed to be an incredibly strong blow. Lucci is kinda weak in terms of character and not even the largest obstacle at this point in the arc, so why should he continue to put up a fight?
-
To please the masses.
Maybe I'm a bit biased because I really like CP9, but I don't think Lucci is boring.
-
So you're saying, all of the sudden, using Funk Fried, Spandam's gonna have swordsmanship nearly on par with Hawkeye, and be the toughest opponent the Strawhats have ever faced.
No you vacuous git, I'm saying he'll have some kind of trick using Frankfried that will make him a worthy opponent for a straw hat. See what you did there was put words in my mouth and then argue against them like they were my point. This is what stupid people do when they can't win an arguement.

**I agree.
What I find odd is some of the same people who constantly say Ussop is really strong and hasn't shown his all say it is impossible for Spandam to show any strengh worthy of an SH. Now, I'm not saying Spandam is strong at all but it is a definate possiblity.**

No, that's what I do when I'm really bored. I'm also making fun of you for taking your opinion so seriously. Come on. It's not gonna affect a life-changing decision. Take it easy.:silly:

You're right, I'm sorry. For the last three days my mom has been really sick (she's finally getting better, thank GOD) and so I've had to do….well, everything. Including waking up at four o'clock in the morning...when she wakes up to start work, god forbid she should let it rest a day or two, but whatever....and hanging out on the couch in case she needs anything done. End result: I get no sleep, and am cranky. Again, sorry.
How do I survive at all, you ask? Well I just keep repeating my mantra: "I start college in a month, I start college in a month, I start college in a month...."

Wow, life's been really stressful then. Stretch once in a while. Be Luffy for a few minutes. (now don't start cramming 100 pounds of meat into your gut, you're still a real human… HAHA J/K =P )
BTW, don't goof off in college no matter how relaxed it seems. Those that do will make their life unfit for studying and homework.
BTW, it's best to talk about this subject by PM.
-
It's clear to me that thanks to the Mastermind Mastermind fruit he ate as a chick Hattori has been the evil lurking behind CP9 all along and Lucci is his meat puppet! In the coming chapter his diabolical plan to take over the world is revealed, maglomaniacal laughter ensues, and we are abruptly saved when Sanji serves his newest dish, Pigeon a la Mode.
-
Awww.
I like Hattori.
This is what I want to see:
Lucci: Gone. Now. When you get down to it, I think he was overall the least zingy of the CP9, or possibly a touch above Califa (although I do find the irony of Ms Sexual Harassment having the sexiest power in the series delightful) I think letting him sink like Choppzilla is a perfectly servicable conclusion, and frankly, I don't want to see many more silly Luffy moves.
Spandam: Nobody beats him. I want him foiled by his own incompetence and ambition. Ideally by a Funkfried malfunction. It avoids having the problem of leaving Spandam as a "booby prize" for Robin or Sogeking because they're "not good enough" to take on a heavy.
Hattori: He should be resolved. He's just too damn cute not to provide closure on. He could be an ideal cute mascot for the crew, roosting inside a cannon on the new ship, and allowing Chopper to vacate that role.
-
My script is up.
I realize I don't often point out when I finish translating a new chapter, since it goes along with my general policy of "don't advertise ever" but it just occurred to me that some people might not have the habit of checking once over the weekend (I typically finish on Fridays, barring any kind of distraction/obligation to take care of) and might like to know. Should I be doing this? Does anyone even care, since I'm not the first to finish? I honestly don't know.
EDIT: I don't mean "should I bother translating at all," I'm just asking "should I bother to tell people exactly when it goes up every week?" Then again, with the number of redundant/unnecessary posts in each chapter thread anyway, it probably doesn't matter if there's one more.

Please do tell us - I love re-looking over the chapter with your script, and I usually forget to over the weekend. At this point I don't think it counts as self-advertizing, because we all already know about you, so I wouldn't worry about that.

What the hell? 4kids isn't on Water 7 yet so what's with this comparsion?
Those of us who don't japanese and kanji know only has the various translators to go on, and I heard it was Funk Fried.
Let it go, it's spelling on the internet. It's not even that bad.
Also, I would guess that Lucci isn't done yet. For all the "he's not important to the story," he's the first opponent who could outfight Luffy is physical strength. He's second only to the Buster Call right now, and he's the last of the CP9, the other major threat in this arc–-a soon resolved threat.
-
After reading Prince's scanalation of this, I have to say I thought this was a good fight, remember that Luffy trying to get him and the Straw Hats out of there in time, so it would makes sense if he took the fastest technique possible. Plus I love the setup for it, Lucci thinking Luffy messing aroung only until actully the attack comes at him. In fact notice that he started using Tekkei and left himself open but as the attack got closer he put both his arms up proabaly out of uncertainty not to mention I love his expression once it hits, bout time that smug look got knocked off his face.
And Gear 3, gotta say Oda delivers again with the surprises we knew it was going to be big…just not literly. But it does fit with Luffy's style, heck it kinda reminded me of the infamous Monty Python Foot gag only with a fist this time. Wouldn't be surprised if Oda got the inspiration from that, hehe. Wonder what other variation Luffy gonna come up with using it.
Can't say if Lucci truly finished or not, wouldn't be the first time an enemy character taken a strong hit and managed to continue on But whatever the outcome, we'll see how the Straw Hats deal with the incoming Buster Call next chapter. Should be fun. =)

People are still wondering that? I thought it was pretty obvious from the very beginning that he is going to rejoin.
Well, it reminds me of people wondering if Sogeking is Usopp or not. People kept asking countless questions like "Is Sogeking's Usopp? Huh? Is he is he is he?" and deep analyzing into Usopp is really Sogeking, people still wonders untie his face mask fell off to reveal Usopp's bare face thus finally shutting the people up.
Now they are having doubt that Usopp would re-join or not, in chapter 420 Sogeking told Robin that she is the part of Luffy's crew but did not specific himself as the part of Luffy's crew which worries people again.
The other day, I went into a FF.net site and read one of the One Piece FF(Fanfiction) about Sogeking planning to leave on the sea train olny to miss it. Earlier Zoro tried to convice Sogeking to come back but Sogeking gets all stubborn saying "I'm useless! I can't go back to the crew, Luffy don't need a weakling like me! I would olny get in the way!". He then went to where the new Going Marry ship is docked where Luffy told Sogeking "Thank you Usopp" Sogeking says "Huh? How do you know it's me?" He thought Luffy would still be mad at Usopp. Luffy told Usopp that he still needs help. The ending was sappy, Usopp rejoins the crew in a chessy way. I really hope that won't happen that way.
