Good dub or no licensing at all?

Most anime fans when they hear that a good anime is going to the States, they go all crazy and scream that it is going to be badly done.

While it's true that dubs usually aren't all that good compared to the original, it cannot be all that bad too. As long as it's the right company dubbing it, then you can be good.

Unfortunately, those kinds of people are EXTREMELY common in Gamefaqs. When they heard that Bleach is coming to USA, they went insane saying that another good anime is going to be spoiled badly, and they are just starting to loathe it for no apparant reason… It's as if they have no faith at all in their own country.

So would you prefer that the anime be dubbed in a good way or that it should never ever touch the States at all?

I'd prefer that an anime is dubbed in a good way, like Naruto or Bo-bobo (if you ignore the Serviceman removals).

If they could dub it without changing it from it's original form, I'd be happy. Oh, and no stupid voice actors. Whoever does the Dubs for stuff from Sunrise, they do a good job. (bebop, trugun)

Though, in my honest opinion, I'd rather have none.
I'd rather suport Oda, than 4kids.
I get so annoyed at stupid fan people. kid sees me wearing OP shirt.."OMG OP, I love OP, you love OP, lets hang out I like ZOLO he is cool, I am cool you are cool…." I kill the annoying twerp (you only get this when they put anime on tv as kiddie shows. The average kiddie, doesn't go out and find subbed uncut anime to watch)
Once they bring the english version over seas, it's hard to find the original jap version.

Just thought I'd point out, 4 of those were on adult swim. Bleach is going to be on adult swim. Anyway, I prefer a good dub over the original anyday. reasons?

1. I understand English
2. No subtitles makes it easier to just watch
3. I can watch it on my t.v without having to burn anything
4. theres always the possibility of accents

I would prefer having a good dub over no dub at all. I don't really like reading subtitles and would rather listen to a show in my native language. It would be a perfect world if all dubs were done like Naruto.

how can you make a distinction between a good dub and a bad dub? ultimately it is a subjective thing that varies from person to person. The question should be "would you want a dub or not?". Some may find the One Piece dub to be good while the trigun or bebop dub to be bad (let's not get into the whole 4kids suxorz thing now, this is merely an example)

did you read my first paragraph? It's just my opinion anyways. I just perfer sub. I see more Cons than Pros for Dubs. Hey, more for you then, right. :)

(whether I've seen the original version or not)

My friend has Dubbed Tenchi and I watched it, but I couldn't stand the english voices for that. Though, I haven't seen the Subs, so maybe the jap voices are just as "bad" (to me)

Most of the voices in the original sound the same as they do in the dub the only exception being Ryoko.

Tenchi is the best obviously edited show (swimsuites)
I say good dub sopeople can get exposure to it more.

If you truely think Zoro's name is pronounced "Zoro" in original anime, you're deceived by its spelling. We never pronounce it as Zoro. We say Zolo. In a way, the kid is pronounciating it according to Japanese original :P

Being true to the original is a good start.

If this is about voices, then not giving them off the wall accents, and keeping the scripting the same, etc.

Well, isn't the sound more like a cross between an L and an R though? You could say it's neither and both "Zoro" and "Zolo."

And yeah, pronounciation goes all over, but it's clearly written on the Wanted Poster as Zoro, so most would assume that in english you say "Zoro."

Just write it as Zoro and pronounce it as Zolo as how bunch of other Japanese do :P For me, it's more of L sound than R, since I know I can't pronounce R…

So I'll be talking about Zoro like:
"Zolo is so cool, he's my most favorite character!"
and some "hardcore" fan would say:
"Dude, you're not even a true One Piece fan! It's ZoRo!"
Me: "Zo... lo?"
Guy: "Zoro!"
Me: T_T

I'd prefer a good dub, like Naruto with minimal edits and decent voice acting. However, I'll always probably prefer the japanese version because that's anime in it's original form.

To a degree, my thoughts exactly. I do enjoy watching subs but I don't always feel up to downloading and watching them. At times I find myself more willing to watch a decent dub. Plus I only have a certain amount of computer space. Watching or buying a decent dub means I have a bit more freedom about where I can watch it. But frankly I like both.

It depends on what's being translated. You have to watch out for foreign words being used so you know whether to use L or R.

And I dunno. In most romanizations (writing japanese in english alphabet) I've seen they almost always use R.

I am willing to give most dubs a chance, but if the dub is done by 4kids in any way, I will not watch it.

I have no faith in 4kids to EVER do a good dub of ANYTHING they get while Al Kahn is at the helm…

see, that was my understanding. Also, since, the word derives from an English person, I asumed it was just pronounced that way. I think the jap just have their own way of pronouncing R. It sounds like "LR" to me. just like the TS in tsunami. If that word derived from english, it would be sunami.

Either way, I used that reference, for the sole fact, that everyone else bitches about Zoro's 4kids name, so i thought it would be a good example. I guess"Trace" would have been better to use"…unless, gasp they pronounce it "trace" in the jap version too, so I am wrong again.

Or maybe a good example was pokemon. Remember trying to tell a kid, that in Japan, Ash's name is Satoshi, and the kid freaked and started pouting and yelling "no it's not no it's not his name is ash it's ash"

(I was just trying to get my point across how kids are annoying when they don't listen to reason, and won't admit they are wrong.)

It's probably because to them they don't know that the show originates from Japan and that the characters names are not the same as they are in the states.
