Yo. I have always liked lookin at cosplay people (except the fat, or badly done:ninja:), and I was wondering if someone here could give a tutorial, becuase I wouldnt mind making a costume sometime, and wearing it at Halloween or something (becuase I probably couldnt go to a convention anyway). So, does any of you good cosplayers here (cough Strings, CosmicDebris, Seta Ginny and others), have any good advice? Thanks in advance.
Cosplay tutorial?
-
-
Cosplay Tutorial? Hmm.. Well It depends who you want to do? How much you're willing to spend? and how dedicated you are?
-
Well….I like to finish things when I start them, and I would like to do probably Kuro, and I would like to do Franky, but it would probably be too hard. I am willing to spend....well it depends. If I see something I REALLY like, like a wig, I could spend as much as needed, unless its over $150 dollers, for one thing. My grandmother can sew, so thats not a problem. And....yea.
-
Hmm.. Kuro seems pretty simple to me. Personally this is what I would do it may vary for other cosplayers, but this my idea. I would go to a thrift store, etc. Find a Black suit similar to Kuros. Then alter it adding on the "Poo" marks, making sure that it actually fits you. Now hair color isn't hard, Brown hair or Black hair just simply gel it back. If you have light colored hair, Blonde, Red etc. Just go to a costume store, hobby shop and buy some Black/Dark Brown hair spray. Now for the glasses, I work in a grocery store and there’s a small section near the pharmacy where they have reading glasses for about 10 dollars. Unless you own a pair of glasses then go ahead use those. As for the claws, Usopp with a Pushpop's friend who cosplayed as Kuro in the other thread used Plexiglas which is really good if you're able to cut it correctly. Even looking around for a glove at a thrift store that is similar for Kuros and then just cutting holes through the tips of the gloves, crazy glue it and then sew it shut. Now for the Kuro shoes, I honestly don't know, perhaps shoe covers on top of shoes you owe already.
Those are my ideas, maybe some other members will give you some pointers.
-
Yes, I asked Usopp with a Pushpop to ask him how he made them. They were really good. I have dark brown hair, so you think I should make it black? I allways thought of Kuro with VERY dark green hair. But, thank you for your help. Hmmmm….. I really doubt I could do it, but do you know how people make Sonic and other things like that costumes, like this? I know I cant, but it would be really cool to http://aanime.free.fr/Epita2004/Epita2004-Aoikitsune-DSCN132.JPG

Reminds me of this Moogle costume a friend of mine made a while back. All I can say is buy some Blue Fabric as your granny to sew it into a Body suit. Add on the major parts in the chest and what not. As for the head, you can Paper masche it, when coat it with a hardener then Sew some fabric on top. This is what my friends Moogles head ended up looking like..
Don't mind the body, random people were trying it on. Thats all I can think of, Sorry amigo.
-
How hard was it for him to make that? It looks good :) Also, how long did it take for him to sew the material on?
-
Well for a Sonic like costume, you could take a furry pattern and alter it a little.
-
Hmm…I dont know where you are getting at omnichild....
But, another question I have, is what are conventions like? I would want to go, but I am reluctant, as I might feel embaressed, especially if I see a lot of OBSESSED people. But, the acting sounds fun, as I love to act, and I want to persue a career in the movie buisiness:happy:. The closest one that sounds good around where I live is Neko-Con 2006, in Virginia, becuase I live in eastern North Carolina. If anyone has been to one of those, could you tell me what goes on down there, and maybe some stories of past experiances?
-
Ok.
Take a furry pattern (ex: pattern) and for a sonic costume use that pattern as a base. You now at least have the body of the costume. From there you can either as Strings suggested paper mache a head. or use the hood part of the costume and build off of it. Add the spikes of his "hair" and then you could just paint your own face. And if you are doing a sonic costume, you can just not add the tail.
Is that a little easier to understand?
As for conventions: I have run into a few weirdos there. At ACEN I was stalked the whole weekend by someone and had people get a little too friendly with me. But for the most part I had a blast. I made lots of friends and it is always nice to meet others who like the same things as you do.
-
I think I understand. So, the base for the costume is only $ 5.97? O.o, thats a lot cheaper than I thought. Thanks a ton for that info. I am actually wanting to do it more now, since I know that it will be a bit easier than I thought. Even if it is still gonna be super hard, especially to make the head (I would rather do paper mache, I dont like how it looks when people are "human" characters of animals.) And thanks for the story on the convention :). How many have you been to? I will think about it.
-
I have been to only two so far. XD. But I loved them.
And actually if you look at craft and fabric stores, you might find patterns for cheaper. I know Hancock Fabrics near often have their patterns on sell for $1.99 or less. So before buying it online I would check out fabric stores.
-
Haha, well thats more than I have been to :P. Hmm, I dont think my grandmother can sew it now. She is getting pretty old, and it seems like a big job. Is there any place that can sew if you pay them, that does it good?
-
Here are some links to different costume commission sites. clickity
I have never bought from any of them, so I cannot give a reccomendation.
-
Allright, I asked http://www.freewebs.com/bleached/ him a couple of questions, as his work looked good.
-
I thought you might wanna see these too just in case you're having trouble with the head.
http://www.cosplaykingdom.com/cosplaykingdom/hats.htm#!
Also, if you're afraid of attracting weirdos, Like I what happened to me when I started cosplay. The best way to loose them or something, is well for me is to act weirder than all of them, ahem ahem** Pantless Lupin. Oh the other thing is I'm a real asshole in person, so it kinda has something to do with that.
-
Haha, that sounds funny. Well, thanks for your help, I will post some progress. Feel free to post anything else that you have to say.
-
Hmm…now I seem to be torn from Sonic, Franky, and Kuro. Which do you think I should do? Franky sounds the easiest, but the only problem is I dont know how to get his wig, unless you know of a fast, quailty place that makes custom wigs. I planned on paper macheing his big arms, getting a Hawiian shirt, wearing swim trunks (no way I am wearing a speedo XP), and getting cool shades like Franky's. I can also scream a mean "SUPA!", becuase I do it ALL the time. Out of all of them, I would want to do Kuros, the least, but it is still a possibility. And for Sonic, I am afraid of the cost, even though I would like to do him equally as Franky. I would make my own, but I am afraid that I will make the head very trashily, and I dont know where I can get it sewed (Do you know of a store that is in a lot of places that does?).
-
I want to meet someone man enough to cosplay franky properly; with a speedo. Man Faye didn't let his hairy ass stop him from dressing up as Faye. The girls have the guts to wear costumes that are a little revealing, where's the guys guts. When it comes to cosplay, I'm all about the detail. I comend you in going for the popeye arms though. That's quite a detail to overcome.
-
oh come on; you gotta wear a speedo! He wouldn't be Franky without his sea panties.
-
Well, I will try. I have never seen a Franky cosplayer before. I can say though, I dont want to wear a speedo. I am not fat at all, even though I am not anorexic skinny. Plus, I am scared on what people might do if they saw me. Lol. Well, I will buy a speedo, but if I dont like the way it looks, there is now chance that I will use it XP
-
I have seen a Franky Cosplayer. Too bad he was cosplaying as young Franky. -sigh- It wasn't the speedos that stopped him from doing Cyborg Franky. It was the whole sodas in the stomach. He was afraid people would be clawing at his stomach if he did Cyborg Franky.
-
Haha, that gave me an idea…
-
actually I saw a Franky cosplay, and he was wearing a speedo. lol it was great though because he looked so much like Franky although he didn't do the popeye arms.
-
Cool! Why dont those people make Popeye arms? Is it too hard? Also, do you possibly have a pic of him? And how did he make his hair? A wig or did he style it, and dye it? Thanks
-
hold on I'll have to look for it. I remember seeing it at some random japanese webpage with cosplay from WaterSeven. If I find it I'll post a link to the site. my browser can't read Japanese it's all jibberish so even if it did say how he made it I wouldn't be able to read it. although if you can read Japanese and your brower supports it maybe you can see if it says anything about his hair and how he did it.
Edit: I found one with the popeye arms.
http://all-blueorange.hp.infoseek.co.jp/top.html -
i'm not sure if that is Nami or not, but it's definatly not franky
-
Oh, you must be talking about this pic
http://all-blueorange.hp.infoseek.co.jp/2005/1113/1113.html
Wow, those actually look good! I wonder how he made them.
Oh, and I got an e-mail back from those guys. They said it will cost $500 to make a Sonic costume for me O.o.
-
Wow, you know, it's funny, I was talking to someone at AnimeNEXT this weekend, and we were saying how it would be useful to have a cosplay help thread on AP. And here we are XD
I am still recovering from the con and also from other fun things going on in my life. But yes, as far as cosplay goes, I think the people here have started to off with some good suggestions. Once things have settled down over here I will try to add more to this thread…For now, remember, thriftstores and ebay are your friends.
-
Well, I orginally wanted it to be a general cosplay tutuorial, something anyone can use, but its gotten to specific things for me =P. Well, I hope to hear some advice from you, as you make some great costumes :).
-
Allright, I got another e-mail from those people. They say it will cost about $150-200 to make just a mask. Is that a fair price?
-
If I could drop some weight and find money to goto a con I'd do Franky 100%. Speedos and all, tho I'll be a tad bit afraid of the lump which would be quite visable in the speedos known as my balls and penis.
-
Here is the biggest factor. I dont know what to say to my mom to ask for it. I will pay using my own money, but she will think that it will be a waste of money, and probably wont let me get it. Do you know what I can say to convince her otherwise?
-
Yikes 200 bucks? Hmm.. I'm not going to talk you out of it but.. I would seriously try to make one first before paying 200 bucks.
-
Yes, I am thinking about it. I will probably do it like this. I will try and make it MYSELF, and if it turns out really bad, I will use it only as a last resort.
-
hmmm I usually make costumes but it's really hard to give a cosplay tutorial to someone if they can't sew. hmmm… but I know a really good commissioner
-
Oh? Could you post who it is here, or PM it to me?
-
Hmmm 200 dollars sounds like a lot. But it might now actually be. You need to consider these four things:
1. What is it made of?
2. How much do the materials actually cost.
3. How much time is going to be put into making it?
4. What is the quality of it?They are going to charge a based on how much time they had to put into making it for you. Plus they want to get back what money they put into supplies for it. And if it is really great quality and a lot of people are buying from them, they will charge more for an item. If the item is difficult to make it will also go higher in price.
-
I have asked them most of those questions. Here are thier answers. (In quotes mean what they said)
1."The materials I use to make a costume head is foam. All of my fursuits are "All-Foamed" masks and they fit very snug. After carving the foam, I start furring it. I install the fur but hand-sewing them together than attaching them to the foam based head with Hot-Glue. The white part of the eyes are made out of bowls while the iris is made of a see through fabric called Buckram. This is where you see out of. The teeth and nose are made a Scupley, or a oven-baked clay that is very very strong and durable."
2."For a head, it will cost you about $150-200, depending how much the materials cost such as fur. Feel free to haggle the price if you need to"
3."For one mask, it takes about 2 weeks to a month, depending on how musy I am. But if you need the mask done in a hurry, we will get it done sooner"
4.Well, I didnt ask that, but here are some pics.

http://i4.tinypic.com/10p4v9s.png
http://i4.tinypic.com/10cj786.jpgHe also said that he will install a fan for free. But, now I am thinking of trying to make my own mask first.
-
well, I could see it costing $200; but that's 2oo smackers man! That's like half my rent for a month. (probably more, if you convert it to CN dollars.) If I won the lotery and had 200 dollars to thow around, I'd definatly go for it. I am penniless though, so I'd try to find a charicter who would be cheper to cosplay.
As for Buu, man your such a hipocrite. You have no problems with the scantily clad women, but your too scared to show any skin yourself. "I can'ts stands no hypocrites. XD
-
Yea, thats why I am reluctant. Well, I will try and make a mask tomomrow. I will try my hand at Klonoa, I allready have some plans laid out.
-
Hmmm…what do you guys suggesting to try first? Klonoa or Sonic? I like Sonic more, but I have NO clue on how I would make his quills. This is how I plan on making Klonoa. (Excuse me for the bad drawing and bad handwriting. The small circles on the eyes, are where I plan to make eye sockets. Is there any better way I can do that? I also plan on making his ears separate, but I have no clue on how I can make his hat. Any suggestions?)

-
I'd say never trust a guy who says "musy"
I know, I'm just being a prick over a typo. I'm kidding. XD
And I'm not a hypocrite….women are sexy and fit, I however, am not. XD -
Yes, all women are fit and sexy. Like, my grandma. I'm gonna get really fat and wear a bikini just for you buu. (thinks of that scene with Barney on the simpsons) PS: you made man faye cry
Metal, that scribbling was hard to comprehend…sorry to say. I saw the words carboard, and spraypaint. That would be cheep and easy, but I question how good it will look. plus, your putting the spraypainted carboard over your face. Your gonna get dizzy.
I liked the fur idea better. Make a fur mask. you could attach the fur to something that already goes over your face, like one of those dust masks. Just make sure you can breathe.
-
Allright, got back, lol sorry, I made that drawing in like 5 seconds, but even then, I cant draw, and the stupid scanner cut off like half of the page. Anyway, I tried paper mache, and it turned out pretty bad, so I will hold off of that for a while. Hmmm…I will try to do some stuff, but I need some ideas....
-

I had a cosplay question of my own, if I may interject in here instead of starting a new thread.
Is there some sort of unwritten cosplay rule about dressing up as characters only recently introduced in a series? At last year's Otakon I dressed up as Hirako Shinji from Bleach and got a lot of flack for it because it was a "spoiler". I personally didn't think it was since it was just the school uniform, and if you don't want to get spoiled you shouldn't go to an anime con in the first place.
I bring it up because I had a few ideas for this year's Otakon, but I'd prefer not to upset more people. Not a fan of drama.
-
Ruwyn. No people are just picky. I dressed as W7 Nami, which could have been considered a spoiler as most people are not past the Arabasta Arc in One Piece.
I know a few people dressed as TJ Naruto characters. Some people claimed them to be a spoiler others didn't.
Look at it this way, anything could be a spoiler. If I have only read the first one or two volumes of a manga and then in the fourth volume a character gets a new outfit and someone wears that outfit to the anime convention, it is a spoiler for me. But those who are on volume ten it is old news.
People will get over it, so don't worry about being a spoiler.

Tell them to read the manga or to read faster. I remember a bunch of little kids cosplaying as (Luffy, Zoro and Sanji). I was Usopp at the time and I remember one of them came over and was like "Usopp come join us.", Then me being the asshole I am went, "Hey, we're not crewmates anymore remember?". Then I walked away and I swear one of them started to cry…. OKAY, he didn't cry but I did explain to them what I ment and of course these kids were watching the Dub at the time, so they had no idea what I was talking about. Thought I was crazy.
-
geez, that's mean, yet at the same time funny. (some times kids can be so damn frustratingly annoying) I bet they tried to argue that it's "ZOLO! that's his real name you idiot, zoro is suupid" captain usopp smacks stupid lippy kid Go read a book
@Ruwyn: Who's to say it's not your version of a charicter from a fanfic? If I were to get mad at seeing/reading spoilers, I'd be pissed off at every single person on this board. It would be my own fault for being here in the first place, too.
