okay, i'm just transmitting this information.

around 6pm PST today ocean called me while i was half asleep, and if i don't get the information wrong (i was half alseep, mind you), EGX was at some sort of a con when he called up ocean and told him to post here about the announcement they made over at the con that FUNI JUST LICENSED BECK. ocean was out shopping with his girlfriend, so he called me up and told me to post it here. but i was asleep and was at my parents' home who only has a dialup…

and that's why this post wasn't made until 6 hours later.

now if you'll excuse me, i'm going back to sleep. EGX should be able to tell you more once he gets his hands on some sort of ethernet connection.

I'm really curious to see how they do this. This is one of those series that's going to be hard to dub effectively. I thought it was a really bold move in the Japanese version to have the scenes spoken in English actually spoken in English (broken and accented though it may have been). At the same time, anime series in the US can't really be effectively marketed without an English dub, and I don't know how they can get the meaning of certain scenes across without using two languages. It should be interesting.

My guess is that the easiest way would be just to flash a subtitle up that says ENGLISH!!! whenever they are supposed to be speaking English. I think a lot of dim people assumed that this anime could "never" be licensed because of this, but in the big scheme of things it's just a minor logistical issue that has to be sidestepped and is not at all important enough to prevent some company from making money on it.

Back from the con. First off, they said it was long process because they had to go through each episode and list logos and songs and refrences in each episode to take care of legal agreements and such because they said that there would be no point in dubbing it if they couldn't get it all. As for how to dub it, they are working on that and really trying to think of what will work and how to make it work. They showed the opening and gave out "backstage passes" as they called it to everyone who was at the panel. The front is just red with the main character on it and it says Beck with a few Beck logos in the background and states that the "DVD takes the stage 2007." The back is just black and says Anime Boston 2006 and says BECK Mongolian Chop Squad and lists Beckanime.com . I'll try to scan it later.

edit: DAMMIT! Man the "Who the fuck are you?!" scene is a lot funnier in the japanese version. And of course it's hell now insted of fuck.

Actually I have been watching more of this dub and it's freaking awesome. The songs are so wonderfully dubbed and sound better because you can make out what they are saying now.

At first when Justin Cook was singing I thought it sounded like crap, but he has really improved in like 4 episodes when he was singing Spice of life and Like a fuujin for their first cd.

I really hope they release the OST over here which funimation's tracks on them.

Also any news if they are going to release Beck and Keith, the OST's with their versions of the songs. The songs actually make more sense now =D.

Even if Justin Cook's Spice of life and Like a fuujin aren't as good as the original.

So this is what I've been missing? Well it does look pretty cool though. I saw episode 1 in Japanese and it was pretty funny. I also heard a little bit of the dub and it was pretty good. Can't wait for this to come out.

How short series are usually done. Box to hold entire series + first volume. Each volume also comes with a special guitar pick.

Arrgh, this is one of those times I wish I wasn't broke… the box set is supposed to be out today, right? I actually think its worth getting, I finally got to hear the voices for myself, though I don't know what the songs sound like yet.

Anyway, I am pretty excited about this, though I heard bad things about the dub.... I guess I have to see for myself ^_^

I finally watched the first episode! Not bad at all, actually. I'm glad they kept the opening and ending the same.

I've already watched it do to torrents online, but I am still buying it. This was an awesome dub (minus the name changes of lucille and Matt).

The songs were dubbed pretty well. I would have liked if Spice of life had more of the original lyrics to it, but the newer ones fit too. Well that and it would have been way better if I've got a feeling was dubbed, but 50 cent wisdom turned out pretty good.

Too bad they won't release the dubbed soundtrack, but atleast they have music videos for the dubbed songs on the dvd's.

Incase you missed it my other post, they also changed "Iv'e got a feeling" to 50 cent wisdom by beat crusaders (The song that Koyuki plays at school and gets in trouble), but it has the same beat as "I've got a feeling". It turned out good. Not great, but good.

I'm at least glad the Beck dub isn't a total disaster like how 4kids did One Piece.... A dark age that was indeed....

Like, wasn't there rumors that they were gonna have to change the name Beck to something else...? Or that they'd have to erase a bunch of the band names they had throughout the show... Dunno, that's just what I had heard, so I was worried about this dub for the longest time.

Well they had to change I've got a feeling because it was originally a beetles song.

Though they keep most musical references. They even fix the mistake in episode 26 where Koyuki says Jimi hendrix died on September 7th, when it was really october 7th (or it was the other way around, I can't remember).

Holy shit! For the dvd they say "WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU DO TO MY CAR?!" insted of "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DO TO MY CAR?!" in the canadian tv version. This means since things were changed Matt could still be Matt =D. I doubt it about lucille though.

edit: Wait Ryusuke just said, "I'll tell you stories about mark. He's crazy when he's drunk." Yeah, so it is Mark. Damn. Still pretty surprised about all the fucks said.

And the spice of life music video is awesome. I thought it was going to be like a fuujin, but it's still awesome because we get a full version of spice of life.
