I've just finished The Was Games. It was bittersweet, seeing not only the Doctor not being able to escape along with the others, but having Jamie and Zoe forget all that's happened to them after they left with the Doctor. The story itself was good but in the end I would have preffered a different ending, even if I know this is what got us Jon Pertwee, who was and still is my most favourite Doctor.
It is a bit difficutl for me to rate this story because of the bitterswetness of it all,
At the very least Zoe and Jamie got alot to do this story, unlike many past companions in their final stories, like Ben and Polly, Troughton's first companions.
Overall, I have to say the black and white era was a blast. I really enjoyed even the goofy bits, and the stories felt enjoyable. I don't think there's a single story in all of the first Six seasons I didn't like, really the only moment that ever "got to me" was waaaay back in Season 1 where Barbara obstinantly defended the good of the French Revolution, when all the people involved they ever met tried to have them kill, tortured for information or have killed other more or less innocent people infront of their eyes.
To rate Troughton's run as compared to Hartnell's, I did find that the absence of historicals made for decreased variety and that might have been a mistake on Troughton's part and his desire to be as different from his predecessor as possible. I was glad they phased out the Daleks in season 4 so there were more original threats, but they replaced them with the Cybermen so it felt like a bit of a wash. I enjoyed Troughton as the Doctor and was rather sad seeing him go and not be able to get away this time, as noted above. I do preffer Hartnell's frail old grandfather figure to Troughton's Space Hobo, but I do like both of them.
Season 6 was really a good season. For one, the serials now had different lengths, unlike season 5.
Best story of the season….well that'd have to be...The Mind Robber. Quick, brisk and imaginative. The Krotons would qualify as a guilty pleasure, while worst would probably be The Dominators, which wasn't that bad just had problems that made it stick out.
To rate the Hartnell/Troughton era as a seperate entity, which I guess makes sense given both it being fully black and white as compared to Season 7 onwards, and the fact of the missing episodes, I would say my most favourite stories for Hartnell on a personal level would have to be The Celestial Toymaker, The Daleks and Planet of Giants, cause actors fussing around with giant props is always hilarious in my book. My favourite Troughton stories would be Fury from the Deep, The Mind Robber and….The Underwater Menace. I know, shocking.
From this point on I guess I'll go back to watching serials at random.
