Mello explanation:
Mello kidnapped Takada and put her in a situation where it may be revealed that she was the one writing the names in the death note. This caused Mikami, who couldn't contact Light or know that Light was able to kill Takada, to go and get the real notebook he had out of the safe deposit box when he wasn't suppose to. This is how Gevanni learned that the notebook Mikami was carrying was fake.

Basically Mello considered the possibility that the notebook Near was altering was fake and came up with his plan to maybe expose that.
I just watched the entire series. I'm speechless. That was amazing. I'm starting the manga right now. Sorry that this post is kinda useless, I just started and finished watching the series this week and I'm a Death Note n00b if you will.
I hope to be involved in some more important conversation in the future

I love that, while the ending was basically saying "killing people is bad", it also had a bit of an anti-theme to it.
Light lost because he trusted someone.
I knew he was going to loose control if he kept handing it around like that.
Matsuda's theory was likely correct, seeing as how there'd be no reason for them to include it in the final chapter if it was just a bunch of meaningless words.
That, and Near is obsessed with winning. Any tool that can be used to win, even if it another Death Note, would probably be utilized.

I dunno about that. Like half the dialogue in Part 2 was a bunch of meaningless words.

I sincerely hope they don't do it.
The anime ending already is an alternate manga ending (I admit it, I actually didn't like anime ending: in the last minutes of episode 37, the "poetic" ending, though artistically well done Light and Ryuk are actually out of character).
If they want to re-animate the ending, I would prefer something more loyal to the manga.
However, I also hope they aren't going to do a special with scenes from the anime, I mean a sort of a collage with the anime scenes and some extra new scenes with Ryuk's point of view, just to justify the special itself.
I would prefere something re-animated from the beginning, just like an anime movie.
But maybe I want too much XD

Light was quite out-of-character in the manga ending as well.
He wasn't out of character, necessarily, but they definitely exaggerated to ridiculous proportions, just to prove a moral point. Moreover, it was extremely sudden and didn't take into account things like shock.
If they want to re-animate the ending, I would prefer something more loyal to the manga.
