Changes to the ending sound pretty lame. I thought the manga's ending summed up things pretty well.

gaa! stormberry only has 1/2 it subbed right now! i gotta wait to watch the last 15 min. clenches teeth
I got a question, but i think i'd be better off to wait to ask it, or i might be spoiled for the last 15 min lol
-
! Light begging for his life was the best part of the ending. Whatchu fools talkin' about.
-
WTF? Animated Mikami's death?
I suppose they showed Misa's suicide too?

Kind of. We see Misa standing at the edge of a building at the end.
-
I thought the last page of the manga's last chapter was Misa, though…

No, I believe they confirmed that was just some random girl Kira follower. And they said that Misa committed suicide.
-
@Cap'n:

Yep, both confirmed in the How to Read 13.
Here's what was changed:
MANGA:
After Light almost gets shot to death by Matsuda, he asks Mikami to kill everyone. Mikami says there is no way he could and screams out how Light isn't God, just scum. Light begs for someone to kill everybody and finally ask Ryuk to do. Ryuk says he will but instead writes Light's name. Light panics and squirms on the ground pathetically in front of everyone screaming how he dosen't want to die until he finally dies of a heart attack.ANIME:
After Light almost gets shot to death by Matsuda, he asks Mikami to kill everyone. Mikami then stabs himself with a pen and blood sprays everywhere, leading to his eventual death. Then Light opens the door to the warehouse and runs away. Aizawa and Ide start to go after him but Near says to let him go. Light runs away and thinks about how he used to be before he got in contact with the death note. Ryuk is sitting on top of a building overhead and sees Light running. Ryuk writes Lights name down without telling anyone. Light runs into a building and dies peacefully lieing on a flight of stairs. -

I have to agree;
! Light was pretty much a kid who got way more power than he should've, and he binged on these insane fantasies about being 'god,' and about his 'new world order.'
! But seeing him, after all of his tricks were gone, and after he had nothing else and was at his very end, as nothing more than a scared, pitiful maniac was perfectly suitable. It showed him as nothing more than a mere man who let his power drive him. Ryuk's speech and killing of Light were also great, as they were long-coming since the start of the manga.
! That, and it was pretty funny. -
I must say I really liked Death Note, and the anime showed a good end. The only thing I missed was that they dind't show what happened to the world and all the Kira followers.
(Did the spoiler thing work??)

As for the anime's ending…
Okay, Mikami killing himself with a PEN sounds humorous, but the rest.... peaceful death? What the hell?
-
It wasn't that peaceful. He was running away in regret and fear. Before he died he saw an image of L, as if his rival was witnessing how Raito had lost. Basically, regret was more involved.
The way he died was quite peaceful, but he was far from happy.
-
I liked the ending a lot, especially the part with L looking at him.
Fairly pathetic way to go on Light's part though, he completely lost it.
-
I still liked the movie ending better than both but this anime one meh
-
That, and it was pretty funny.
I thought of it as annoying actually. I mean~
! Light screaming for takada and Misa's help was already bleeding into my own ears enough. Sure it was funny seeing Light getting what was coming to him but still, if that was annoying enough in terms of scream~
! Think of how much loud or irritating it would have been to hear him scream and beg "Ryuuk!1!!! help me!!1!!!" in the anime. More or less, I'm okay with both endings I guess. Even if Light was acting like some kid who thought he could get away with anything…at least the anime made him look like he actually decided to die without bitching, grabbing to Ryuuk's damn leg.
! I dont know, that part in the manga probably was one of Light's most annoying moments for me. First time that chapter came out, I remember, a year ago, my main response "Oh Light, stop bitching and die quietly, lol." -

ok, who is ratio? I'm totally lost on that one.
I thought it was kind of contradicting, how light is a vicious killer, and he gets a calm peaceful death. It wasn't a bad ending, but I was looking for something more epic. from the sounds of the manga that would have been more epic.
and what's his name killing himself with a pen; that was overboard for me. why was blood spraying all over the place like that. what is this, mortal kombat?
oh ya, and that whole part with mellow; I didn't get any of that. maybe it was poorly translated, or maybe i'm just a little slow. I'll admit it.
-
If you asked me they ruined a perfectly good ending.
EXACT ending of the Manga below:
! After Light gets shot in the hand by Matsuda, who is pissed that his comrade would actually be Kira, and is trying to kill Near again, Mikami starts screaming about how he isn't a god. Light asks Ryuk to write everyone's name down, and he says "Ok, I'll Write" And then he tells him it's his name and reminds him of the beginning, where he said he'll be the one to write his name down.
! He panics, screams at Ryuk, and then after 40 seconds of pleading, he suddenly has a heart attack and dies. Near becomes the new L, with lester as Watari, and the final chapter begins a year after this event.
! Matsuda and Aizawa are on a case about drug dealers meeting in the same warehouse, exactly 1 year after the incident. They talk about what happened and the strange coincidence. Meanwhile a group of Kira loyalists remember Kira.
! Misa dies of Suicide about 1 year after Light's death, not being able to handle the news any longer, which Matsuda told her.
! Mikami is taken to jail and dies of insanity about 10 days later.I haven't seen the Anime ending, but I can already tell the Manga's is superior.
-

how was the movie ending better?
-
ok, who is ratio? I'm totally lost on that one.
Yagami Raito. That's his name. Well… in japanese.
-
No, his name is Light. Raito is a mis-romanization of it.
-
Light = Ratio? why do they sub it as Light then? Why does it sound like they say Light? i mean, i know the whole L/R thing, but how does "ight" sound like "atio"
-

Light sounds like Raito, not Ratio.
-
I go with raito because I can't imagine someone naming their kid "light".
Just like I go with aliester crowly, and not alystar crory.
Link to the last episode sub?
-
I go with raito because I can't imagine someone naming their kid "light".
Even though it's written out in english as "Light" several times in the series and in the databook?
-
how was the movie ending better?
because L was the sole character in the manga that I could stand, and him winning in a sense seemed right
-
-
Ugh. The melodrama burns my eyes. Great macro though.
-
@Geg:

and just like crowley's watch said "Alystar Crory". Yes. (I go by the person whom he was named after's spelling)
I like it better that way. Just because the artist picks one, doesn't make the other an incorrect romanization.
-
ok, that was nice, thanks for this masterpiece.
-
The series or the macro?
-
Ending sucked donkey balls.
Lacked any point the manga ending had. Was really just a conclusion to Raito's story.
Hated how they removed the best line from Ryuuku's speech, and put it in the commercial pages. wtf?
mikagami stabbing himself with a pen was just retarded. XD I laughed. Where was his "You aren't god" outburst?
Seems like anime removed everything the fanboys complained about in the manga. "liek OMG, Raito begging was SOOOOO OOC!" >_>
I mean they even gave Raito a more dramatic death, with music like "A great man has died here today, and light shines upon him as he passes into the next world" which I thought was like the opposite point the manga made.(Death is equal)
-
Light sounds like Raito, not Ratio.
of coarse it would help if I would read words properly, instead of glancing at them, and asuming they are something they are not. lol
Raito still looks dumb, even for a japanese name. to me Light just seems more suiting of the charicter. Plus the irony, of him being the evil person in the series, yet having a name like that.
-
The series or the macro?
for "some" reason i didn't see the macros so i'm obviously talking about the series.
-
@Geg:
I was just about to post this.
It's light for the last time. The author even writes the name in english in the character pages in the tankobans. People who refuse to believe it's Light are messed up. Also the whole thing in volume 4 where Misa is like
"Oh his name is the kanji for moon, but it's pronounced Light. That's kind of hot." Or whatever, something like that, but it makes sense.
-
Ryuk completely turning on Light once it became clear that Ryuk's entertaining diversion had reached its end was my favorite part of the entire second half of the series in the manga. Being visited by images of all those he had slain in his bid for diefication actually makes it seem that Light regretted what he had done, which would be pretty unbelievable. And why would Near simply let his quarry get away? I highly doubt he knew Ryuk was going to kill him.
Also, why did Mikami stab himself with a pen? It makes it seem like Near trumped Light out of Mikami's random act of insanity instead of completely outsmarting him.
While I wasn't completely satisfied with the manga's ending as a whole, it seems a lot better than the animation's rewrite.
-
Ryuk didn't turn on Light. Ryuk has never on Light's side, and he told Light in the beginning that he would write Light's name in the note and kill him.
-
@Mr.:

near knew he wouldn't go far. as well, it was more of a game to near, i think. more of a challenge, to prove that light was kira, and to surpass L. After he acomplished that, well, i guess that's all he needed.
and mikami stabbed himself with a pen cause he's a nut case.
-
Mikagami killed himself in the manga too. but condemned raito as not being god in the warehouse.
Him killing himself makes it look like mikami was trying to help kira escape.
They also replaced ide and the other guy's drive on the way to work with misa contemplating suicide.
Before mikami stabbed himself, everything was spot on tho. After that, shit just hit the fan.
I guess it was due to 99% of death note fans being retarded and not liking the ending of the manga.
-
Didn't Near kill Mikikami in the end? Makes sense, though maybe not since it was Matsuda's theory.
-
Didn't Near kill Mikikami in the end? Makes sense, though maybe not since it was Matsuda's theory.
It's Matsuda's theory that made perfect sense. The only reason he didn't pursue the theory is that Aizawa convinced him that it didn't matter since there was no evidence and without Near they'd all be dead.
-
Wasn't it stated that mikami killed himself in prison?
-
Wasn't it stated that mikami killed himself in prison?
Yes, but Matsuda had a theory in the last chapter that Near had Mikami's name written in the death note so that he would show up to the meeting without checking the notebook and then die in prison 10 days latter.
-
now one's explained the mellow thing for me yet…please.
-
What Mello thing? I can't find it…
-
I find the ending (anime) kinda meh, one thing im curious about is:
Did Misa suicided herself at the same time as Light in the anime or was it just a short clip one year later during Lights time?
Because i find that strange since she shouldn't have a reason to commit suicide if she knew Light was dead, unless i missed something in the anime because i stopped looking since ep.20. (i did read the whole manga + vol.13 though) -
maybe they weren't implying it in the anime, they just wanted to show misa really sad? (i'm guessing here)
and rixter. about mello, I was confused about his whole part he played in the end. Maybe the translation didn't make a lot of sence, or maybe I just didn't get it. ( that's a good possibility too, since all of DN had confusing parts for me)
all i got from that bit was that someone wrote that ladies name in the DN to die a minute before light did… which would probably make more sence if i knew what was going on. lol
-
From what I remember from the manga, he gave Near some vital information that I can't recall shortly before he died. Then when Near had Light cornered he made a big speech about how when Mello's determination combined with his calculating nature (ha) they surpass the original L's abilities. The anime might've changed it though.
