Well, I was on Gaia a few days ago trying to get some tickets for gold .. and I enetered this one "Anime Room" and we were talking some animes. Then I (Gadashi on Gaia) asked "so what animes do you all like?"

Seriously, nothing pisses me off more when people hate an anime because of the art. One Piece, Detective Conan, and Lupin usually get this treatment. I wish I could smack these people with a copy of Oda's Colorwalk.

Or a copy of Oda's colorwalk three. :P I already hated GAIA; 'tis extremely spammy and you can't hold an intelligent conversation for half a second. And sadly, yes, their are a large number of One Piece haters. Quite sad, they're missing out on a lot of anime if they judge by how childish the art is. ;_; That's one of the reasons I love One Piece; Oda manages to still keep the art style more cartoonish; but makes the fight and emotional scenes positively beautiful.

I agree. When I watch or read One Piece I'm not really paying attention to the quality of the art but rather the quality of the characters, story, humor and fight if one is going on. Heck I never even considered judging it by it's art work until I saw people bad mouth it based on the art's quality.

Watching maybe a couple more episodes would maybe help improve the prespective

I think it suits all ages althought seing 4kids dub I guess I can agree it some people that hate it althought they should look to see the original and not bash the entire anime based on a dub/rapped version

Shonen means teen boys, and thats who its aimed at, and thats who watches / reads it in Japan (majority)

However, people at my school are worse. They say that one piece is bad because they say "Luffy hasn't gone through puberty." Seriously. Thats why they hate it. Then the one who does like it says the Dub is better than the sub.

Personally, I can see the art being a factor. Not necessarily the deal-breaker, but a factor, nonetheless. I mean, a manga/anime/cartoon can have the greatest story ever told, but it'll be hard to read/watch all the way through if you can't stand to look it (and vice versa, a series can have magnificent art, but if the story stinks would you read it?). Personally, wihle I generally favor story/content over art, I do admit I have a tendency to dislike manga that are overly-shadowed/complex in their drawing.

But that's just my opinion.

Toy Story is critically aclaimed and movie critics will reccomend it to anyone. Same with Miyazaki movies.

Just because its not filled with spewing head sockets and dadistic bullshit dosen't make it "un-adult".

I really… ugh. Gaia. I've been on Gaia for well over three years now, I have over 400k in gold on it, and there is only ONE thread I ever bother to visit now. (In the Breedables, a friend of mine runs a One Piece themed petshop, full of people who LOVE One Piece...) That's my "home" on Gaia. Otherwise I hate the place too, now, although it didn't used to be so bad.

And One Piece's art is fabulous, so just ignore them. :3

I am sorry, it appears I have to elaborate on my earlier statement. You see it's not that I have a problem with someone calling him Zolo. It is just that Generally everyone on Gaia that uses the dub names like Zolo and Trace are dumb…dumb as hell. Furthermore that is pretty much at least a good seventy five percent of the One Piece crowd on Gaia.

Actually, the real issue that madgopher is talking about is when you explain to these people that Zoro is the name that Oda intended…and then they try to argue with that. If you want to call him Zolo, that's fine, hell, call him Big Dumb Stupid Head for all I care. The point is, 'engrish' or not, Zoro is the official way that Eiichiro Oda spells it english. After all, crazy rabid fans didn't just break into the studio and paste the word 'Zoro' onto his Wanted poster in the Japanese version!

And there are people on Gaia who would STILL try to argue that that is NOT the official name. If the author and creator himself spelling it that way in english, I don't know what proof more they need. Again. If they still wanna call him Zolo...cool. I mean, I admit, back in my Sailor Moon days ten years ago, I sometimes called Usagi Serena just cause I liked the way it sounded better. But I wouldn't try to argue that Serena WAS her original name. THAT is the real annoying thing about Gaia, and the thing I know gets madgopher's goat at times.

...while I'm here....Zephos, I need to give you a medal or something. Seriously. See, I live with madgopher, and many a nights have we munched over half prize appetizers at applebees, chattering about anything and everything....where your name has come up in relation to the Gaia forums. I like Gaia, you see, but I stay away from the discussion forums because of all the bullshit. So Monty fills me in on anything humorously stupid that goes on, and usually you are the only ray of light in that big dark tunnel. Half the time he'll say ' I was going to reply...but then FunkMasterZeph said everything I was about to say already' You are teh_awesome.

anyone who Tries to Say that the Series is Intended for Children because it's printed in a Shounen Magazine is only half right. it's inteded for Children IN JAPAN but by America's standards, everyhting From Shounen Jump has a Teen rating. meaning by America's Standards at least, its intended for teens+

Well, basically, there is no actual "L" in the Japanese alphabet/syllabatory system. When pronouncing words that contain them, L sounds come across as sounding a lot like R sounds, and the same can be said about R's. They're not really the same, but they sound the same. Thus the confusion and the various different spellings of the name. (it's where the Ruffy/Luffy issue comes into play…not to mention the Raito/Light debate you see in Death Note)

I might not have explained that the best, or 100%, but hopefully you get the basic idea. Someone feel free to correct me if I missed something. In any case, what it boils down to, when an author actually declares an official spelling of the names in english, it's safe to say the arguement for the official spelling is over.

They really have Neither an R or an L, uinstead they have a Hybrid of the 2 that is Always romanized as R. to Properley do it, Say "Ra, Ri, Ru, Re and Ro" but just before you say each R sound put your Tounge at the roof of your mouth as though you're going to say an "L" sound. and you get something that sounds like a cross between the 2, THAT is the Japanese R/L

Just take a look at any cityspread or background pic he's done. Not only his backgrounds but Oda's expressions put other artists to shame with ease.

I'm not defending them (heavens no)
But early on in the manga the art is....blehish. Namely in the Buggy arc.
And the Anime sometimes really....looks akward(but thats normal for weekly anime right?)

Its the ones who never give it a chance because of the style that are bad. Especially those who wish it was done cliche wise.

You'll find some folks (on Gaia of course) that actually think its American...

Good example that quality doesn't require excess amounts of philosophy or sophistry. I heart Peanuts. One of my saddest days was when I read the last Peanuts strip. Schultz was an awsome guy too. I'm from India, and in the 8th grade, I sent him a letter from New Delhi. 3 months later, I get a hand written letter from him, with a second page of sketches of all the Peanuts characters. Sketches he made himself!! It's like one of the most precious things I have. Anyways…

I enjoy stuff that makes me think a lot, no doubt. But things like One Piece are just as good because of the story-telling. Another example is Roald Dahl (a writer). He's famous for writing children's stories like "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "The BFG". They are wonderful books, children's story or not. Just because something is made for a younger audience doesn't mean that older people can't enjoy it.

It is surprisingly hard to come up with a good stories for children. Salman Rushdie, considered by some the best author today, wrote a children's book called "Haroun and the Sea of Stories." As a story, it was charming. As a children's book, it failed miserably. I could get the subtle jokes he made, but no child would. Just shows that people who knock something off as 'childish' just don't appriciate the difficulty that goes into making it.

And, there's this one guy on Anime News Network who bashes K-F every chance he gets to. He thinks that they actually try to discredit Oda, and say that they created One Piece. One time, he said something like "Kaizoku Fansubs is all like 'OMG, look at our blinging logo! Check out our attention-grabbing subtitles and word art! We made the show!'". What an asshole.
