ok basically i thought of something might be useful, it might not. You know those books where it shows you how to draw like dragonball z or w/e i thought we could have it on this forum but whoever like one piece guys, etc. I would contribute but i dont have a scanner and if i taught something it wouldnt be good XD

I have a question how do u draw franky's hair. I keep praticing but everytime it looks like crap ;-;.

I cannot get Robin's face and hair to llook right. It always looks flat (like Professor Utonium flat O_o )

You have to remember, Robin's hair looks flat most of the time, so it shouldn't be too hard to do that. Also, personally I just drew her nose normally, then added an extra line afterwards.

Luffy's hair is always a problem for Christy. Changsho has been trying to teach her, but she is a terrible art student, especially with an MSN doodle mouse.

What kind of trouble do you have with Usopp, Pirate Neko? Is it the physical structure or something on his face or his bandana or something? something something somethi gets shot

Well, like I said the first time the idea was brought up…if you want to draw the One Piece characters, you need to learn how to draw the human figure first. So really you should start with some basic anatomy. Then to draw the characters, just look at Oda's drawings and copy them until you get a good feel for the uniqueness of their features.
I could post a series of my progress in drawing a character, I suppose. But I draw in such a haphazard fashion.

As for drawing Usopp...I had a hard time with him too when I first started out. I think the problem that some people have is they get locked up in the oddness of his features and think that they have to change the way they draw. He doesn't appear to be all that proportionate because he's got a huge nose and huge mouth and somewhat long face. I find that I do better just starting to draw a face just like I would anyone else's, and then add on the wierd things like the lips and nose.
And btw, you HAVE to draw the nose. I have seen people draw noseless Usopp and it's just WRONG. XD

And Luffy's hair... be loose with the pencil, and do light, sweeping strokes. The strands clump together in a sparse, wild fashion.

though, i need to remind all of you, this is like, textbook way of drawing these characters. and when i said textbook, it's not ODA-STYLE way of drawing, but more of emphasizing on certain features that you can observe directly from the character. for example, how the distance between usopp's mouth and nose is a bit greater than other characters.

if you just follow these directions, then all you're doing is like being a manga artist from the franchised "how to draw manga" book. you need to add your own twist, your own style to it to make your drawing more lively and unique.

i fail at that. all i do is copying oda's style, and even that i still fail. -__-
that's why i like the stick figure drawing better than my other "good" drawings, because at least it's my own style and i'm not just trying to imitate oda.

anyway, regarding usopp, i'm sure people like cosmic/taboo/chang has their own way of drawing usopp, and the points that they pay attention to might be different from what i pay attention to. the best way is to get a reference picture from the manga and try to observe as much as you can and find your own few important points that can make your drawing look like the way you want it to look like.

I would be eternally thankful for a "how hair falls" type tutorial that always trips me up (tho I'm lucky with a drawing I'm making now most of the Strawhats have a more "professional" hairstyle, so I can cheat a bit ^_^; )

that is very helpful, e1n! though, i used to draw from those How to Draw Manga books…. I think those are so useless, I hate them. I'd rather draw from my own mind or from life than waste a whole $20 on that crap....

Yeah, thos "how to draw so-and-so" books are crap. The only use you may find with them is finding cool action poses to draw. If you really want to learn to draw, I suggest buying Barcsay's Anatomy for the Artist and Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards.

The More How to Draw books are very good, I liked them ones, there are only 4 and they help you get started.

the how to draw manga books really are a setback to the manga world. while it actually teaches people how to draw, it also creates an army of generic mangaka who will all draw in the same generic style. it seriously kills creativity and style. <_<

even at that that one's not too good. I had a bunch of those books and i never used them. I go for the slightly cheaper method of going through books, magazines and the internet and find pics to use as reference. Of course i do still have a few books that i've found pretty nifty. Some of the better books i have are Burne Hogarth's 'Dynamic' series which goes over hands, figures, shading and folds in clothing. The last book i've found to be an immense help.

Oh yeah, the Hogarth books are good. Even though most of his drawings look like buff superheros. I saw the clothing/fabric book at Borders. Thanks for reminding me, now I know what how use my Borders card that I got for my birthday.

omg did someone really say that? geez, that's why i'm starting to hate most anime these days…. its getting so generic, thank god there are still a few good titles (ahem, One Piece....)

Christopher Hart = worst books on art EVER. I had one of those for animation, and it was pretty useless.

It's not just the chin, the head cuts off at the nose.. it's like there's no room for emotive eyes.

That's why I stick with Kuroobi, he's drawable.

On the topic of OP as a shoujo and pretty boys, I feel the need to post my "how to tell if a character is bish" guide. Essentially, you put them in drag and if they score whiplash points from every straight guy in the viscinity, they're bish. I tested it on Sanji.

Conclusion: Not a bish. Feel free to slap anyone who says otherwise, with this picture if necessary.

On the topic of drawing OP characters, I usually use the settei pre images if I can find them, they're really handy for things like eyes/nose/mouth shape, hair, clothing, all that.

Well, she's attractively proportioned without having that whole "snaps in two in a strong wind" thing Nami and Robin have developed, and you draw her with expressiveness and personality.

Ah, I'm so glad someone is commenting on this. I'm just getting caught up and I hate how the charicters are being drawn now. The body proportions are always drawn wierd.

Nami's face looks wierd and angular. zoro's face looks 2 dementional, I like sanji when he looks like a pretty boy, that's his charm. (sanji before) Luffy's nose is pointy like a beak. chopper looks so different it's not even funny. he looks more like a toy than a real animal. The only one who looks any better is Robin, and that's because she already has an angular face.

and Conekiller, that's a definite with all the charicters necks. Oh ya, and the women's wastes are so thin now, they're gonna break in half from the weight of their boobs. It's a little too rediculous how disproportionate they are.
