Bushido I hate your Blank vs my Guile D: Not the Head Bite!
I told you I'm sick with Blanka. I'll swoop that ass.
Bushido I hate your Blank vs my Guile D: Not the Head Bite!
I told you I'm sick with Blanka. I'll swoop that ass.
The only redeeming factor for the convention was the air hockey tables in the gameroom. And I whooped LC Lapen's monkey ass. lol
I may have got my bitch ass beat on the hockey table, but I seem to recall schooling your sorry keister with my Pokeymans. Next year we're doing the whole nine yards; hockey, arcade, PS2, you name it, we're doing it.
Oh, and feel free to ask for seconds over WiFi anytime .
You totally shamed me at Pokebusiness. I've begun to formulate a new team, since I've literally had to rethink everything. Give me a month or so…
Goddamn why didn't anyone tell me mr. bushido was holding a panel?! I would've gone! Did he have any cool announcements?!
Anyway, this year there wasn't as much cool stuff, that's for sure, but it was better organized so that's a plus. I'm surprised at the contacts I made and who I got to talk to, I even had a few personal chats with the C.E.O. of FUNimation. Toei Animation didn't have a booth this year but they still could've done more. I can't really blame them for not doing much "One Piece" stuff this year since Cartoon Network never really gave the show a chance, so there wasn't much for them to promote this year that they couldn't do this year. Hopefully down the line when "One Piece" gets more successful in America will get to see the Straw Hat seiyuus and Eiichiro Oda as guests.
Did anyone see the lm.c concert?
First Guest of Honor for AX 09 has been announced: Morning Musume
AX 09 is once again taking place at the Los Angeles Convention Center, from July 2-5. General attendee pre-registration is not yet available (what the hell?) but press and industry passes are. Hotel rooms are also blocked off from being ordered that weekend until general registration opens up.
edit–
General attendee pre-registration is rumored to open up sometime in March.
We can still pre register at the Westin now though, right? I love that place, and definately want to stay there again.
Not sure. People were trying to register at the hotels they stayed at last year, but rooms were closed off during the AX dates. If you signed up for their newsletter/notification services, they're supposed to e-mail everyone when hotel registration should be ready.
But yeah, they are really late with this. Registration and hotels should have been up by last month.
Just got an E-mail saying that Pre-Registration is up.
Strike while the iron is hot, I say.
Awesome I'm gonna get it next week when I get paid.
What? I guess I am going to go. Maybe. Do I have to dress up? Maybe I will be Brook. Wait, I don't want to dress up. Normal clothes. Anaheim or LA? Wait, do I want to go? I think I am going. Wait…....what?
Alright, since this was posted a while back in the cosplay section of the forums, and I forgot to cross-post this to this thread, my apologies.

@Ichnob:
From Cosplay.com:
One Piece Gathering will be held on Saturday, July 4 (Day 3), at 1:00 pm in the area between Staples Center and West Hall. This location is outside and is much easier to find than those horrid stairs, so hopefully there will be better photo opportunities for both amateur and professional photographers.I personally really like this location (thanks junkeemonkey) since it's both open enough for a large group and also has a small flight of stairs which would be great for the huge group shots. More importantly, there is enough space for us to play the Davy Back Fight.
*note: The OP gathering takes place near the same location as the Kingdom Hearts gathering (12:00) and Smash Bros. gathering (2:00), both just outside West Hall. If you were planning to attend either of these gatherings along with the OP gathering, my sympathies go out to you (I wanted to go to the Smash Bros. gathering as Luigi).
Now for the other half of this post, the Davy Back Fight! We were talking about trying to do something fun for everyone, that could also alleviate the later half of the cosplay gathering where everyone just stands around dicking about and trying to come up with creative photo shots. Besides being in costume, this can also be a good ice-breaker for fans of the series to begin talking with each other more and not keeping to themselves, and just generally having fun at Anime Expo. We had to deviate a little bit from the original DBF from the series, but we definitely want to maintain the spirit of it. Ideally, we'd like to hold one round about half an hour before the actual gathering (around 12:30).
We are encouraging ALL fans of the series to come play. Whether you're in an OP cosplay, non-OP cosplay, friends of someone attending the gathering, or just a fan wanting to take a few pictures of the OP gathering, you are more than welcome to join in on the games. Rules are actually quite simple:
–Those wanting to play will be divided up into two teams (possibly more depending on the number of players).
--For people who are attending with a group of friends, we will try to keep you on the same team...initially.
--The DBF will consist of multiple rounds of short games.
--The team that wins the round will get to choose a certain number of people from the losing team to join.
--The number of participants per round will vary depending on the game (sometimes a handful, sometimes the whole team).
--The team with the most players at the end is the winning team.If you are worried that you might ruin your costume, worry NOT! The games we will be selecting from will not be very physical or messy. We want everyone participating to be able to play at least one game, so that's why we're bending some of the DBF rules that way. We will try to keep the games as One Piece-themed as possible, but our creativity can only go so far. And since Suupaa Kaizoku Cosplay is hosting the event, we will merely be judges to make sure that no one breaks the rules...sort of. Yes there will be cheating, and we will be impartially corrupt judges. And let's not forget, the winners will get prizes as well! So come out a little early for the gathering and join in on the DBF. If it goes well enough, we might try to organize another round after the gathering winds down. And ideally, we'd like to make this a yearly tradition.
I know that not every member from this forum that attends AX likes to attend the OP cosplay gathering, but I'm hoping that this would be a good ice-breaker for fellow OP fans and members of this community. It's one thing "knowing" someone's online persona, and it's another to actually meet the people making these posts. I know that there's a good number of people here who have already met each other at this convention over the years, and what better way to meet other awesome* people than having fun with a Davy Back Fight! Who knows, you might even see some good cosplayers and meet some really nice people. Here's hoping that some of you guys will be able to attend. Also, we're hoping to plan another activity or two for the convention. Hoping to post more info about that in the near future, and hopefully they'll be fun enough for everyone on this board who goes to the con to participate in.
! *Note: Not responsible if "awesome" actually turns out to be douchey. YMMV.
Hello everybody!
I will be going this year (my first year) and I cannot wait to meet all the rest of the members here! I'm gonna try to go as T. Law and my friends will be going as other One Piece characters (a Nami and Ao Kiji for certain…).
So for those wanting to save a bit of money, April 19th is the last day you can pre-order the 4-day passes for $55. After that it'll be $60 until May 31st.
I'm not going to be able to make it to Comic-Con this year gasp so I definitely want to go to AX.
Two new guests of honor (taken directly from AX website)–
Anime Expo is proud to announce the attendance of the legendary Kanagawa Prefecture born producer and artist Toshimichi Mori to the nation’s largest anime and manga convention held July 2-5, 2009 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Mr. Mori is currently working on the Aksys Games title BLAZBLUE as its director, lead artist and designer.
Anime Expo is proud to announce the attendance of the world re-known South African born producer and composer Daisuke Ishiwatari to the nation’s largest anime and manga convention held July 2-5, 2009 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Mr. Daisuke Ishiwatari is famed for single-handedly creating the first GUILTY GEAR game, but he says it wasn’t all just him and shares this credit, “That is not quite true. In fact, it is a big misunderstanding. The core development team consisted of about five people. I was entertained by the idea that I could create a game, and got my toes wet in areas like concept, planning, direction, design, music, writing, and voice acting, so that may be where the rumors stem from. However, by no means did I ’single-handedly’ create this game … In fact, I often came to my colleagues for help.” Mr. Ishiwatari is currently working on the Aksys Games title BLAZBLUE as its composer.
i cant go (for the 9th year in a row)
too far away…:(
Man, I am so confused by this guest of honor announcement. Seriously…wtf.

Yashuhiro Nightow and Satoshi Nishimura
Mr. Nightow and Mr. Nishimura will be joined by two (2) additional members of the highly anticipated 2009 slated TRIGUN movie team, Mr. Shigeru Kitayama and Mr. Noriyuki Jinguji, for a TRIGUN movie panel in which they will talk a bout the various behind-the-scene episodes, from days way back when, and about the experiences they had while in the production stages of the newest TRIGUN movie as well as key points regarding the upcoming film.
Mr. Yasuhiro Nightow has loved to draw manga since childhood. He continued his creative passion well into his adult years in order to fill the “holes” of his life (i.e. what he wanted and couldn’t get, what he wanted yet no one had yet to create it, etc.). He debuted as a manga artist in 1994 with “CALL XXXX” published by Shueisha in Super Jump. Since then he has also created the manga “Samurai Spirits” which appeared in Tokuma Tokuma Shoten’s Family Computer Magazine. In 1995, the manga “Trigun” begain its serialization in the Tokuma Shoten Shonen Captain magazine. The “Trigun” manga title inspired the television anime series of the same title and became highly popular in the U.S.
Mr. Satoshi Nishimura is the director of the highly anticipated 2009 TRIGUN movie and has worked on many huge and popular titles including ALIEN NINE, BLACK LAGOON, CARDCAPTOR SAKURA, DRAGON BALL Z MOVIE 1: THE DEADZONE, FIGHTING SPIRIT, FUTURE GPX CYBER FORMULA, GOKU: MIDNIGHT EYE, GUYVER: OUT OF CONTROL, HAND MAID MAY, MASHIN EIYUDEN WATARU 2, MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM SEED, PARADIS KISS, REVOLUTIONARY GIRL UTENA, RUROUNI KENSHIN, SAMURAI SHODOWN: THE MOTION PICTURE, SHIN CHO BAKUMATSU SHONEN SEIKI TAKAMARU, STREET FIGHTER ALPHA, TRIGUN and much more!
I plan to go but Im only planning on going for 2-3 days since I doubt I can miss that much work with me already asked for some days off. but here is hoping. lol
Less than 3 weeks to go.
I'm still in the air concerning when and if I'm going. I've recently gotten into a car wreck, and since my truck is a total, I'll have to be getting a new set of wheels. If I have enough time and money by the end of this whole ordeal, I'll still be going.
I'm sad that the group that I hang out with will be missing it's key members. And by key I mean practically all of them. That's half of the fun of this 'con for me.
I still haven't registered, but my friend and I decided to go, so we will be there. He's trying to convince me to cosplay, but I don't want to. I have the means of being a decent Brook or Sanji, and he want to be Zoro. The only person I will cosplay is Tobias Funke, cut-off jean shorts and all.
[hide][/hide]
I usually go and cosplay Crocodile, but not sure if I'm showing up this year yet.
Convention schedule is finally up. And once again, Funimation panel is at the same time as the One Piece Cosplay gathering. T-T
Doh! Someone change the schedule, quick!
I'm fucking pissed off.
They just announced that Moi Dix Mois will be there.
Why would they make this announcement only 2 weeks before the event? I would have gone if I knew about this before hand (hate anime conventions and live no where near it; this would be my only reason to go).
This really pisses me off because it's their first time in America and they probably won't come back.
That's the funny thing about AX. You never know what the hell's on the schedual, whether it's a band cancelling or an exiting event popping up at the last minute or the awards running an hour late or the video room experiencing technical difficulties or the badge check-ins being slightly inefficient or the panels running over due to a long Q & A panel or such.
Also, I was worried that I might not make it because I got into a car accident, but my truck will be ship shape and repaired ahead of schedual, so hooray!
I guess I'll continue to miss out then, huh?
Well, I'm going to Chicago Comic-con next year and I bet that I'll know all of the guests and movies being played by the time I buy my ticket and get hotel reservations.
Cancellations I can understand. Not announcing events or guests until the last second (and the other things you mentioned) I cannot.
Okay so along with the gathering on Sat. there is also one on Day 0 if anyone wants to go.
Meeting Time: 5.45-6pm
Meeting Place: same as the One Piece gathering - between the West Hall and Staples Center (LACC Site#1)
Photoshoot Location: Grand Hope Park
Dinner Location:
f:EN:M:/e" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow ugc">Johnny Rockets around 8pm
I'll be going to this one too. Just letting everyone know. I can't wait for it all, though my procrastination has left me very stressed at getting all the costumes finished (more like started…)
Thanks for posting that here, The_Groove. I posted that info in the cosplay gathering thread, but forgot about the general AX thread.
Is it just me or do the events seem unexciting? I mean it's probably because I've been this for so long, but the only new panel that really sparks my interest is the anime op & ed panel.
No, you're not the only one, firecrouch. I used to love going to the Bandai, ADV, and Geneon industry panels because I looked forward to seeing what new anime they would bring over. Now, two of those three companies out out of business. Funimation's OP panel two years ago was a blast as well. I'd probably still go to the Funi panels if they weren't happing during the OP Cosplay gatherings this year and last year.
However, I'm having a lot more fun at AX with people now, instead of attending panels and walking around the exhibit hall for the umpteenth time. I'm still farily new to the AMV contest and AX Idol, but they were okay last year. The main panel I'm looking forward to attending is Overdoing Cosplay II: Cospalocalypse, hosted by CCR Stars. Bad thing about that panel though is that it takes place about halfway during the AMV contest, so not only is it late, that means I'll have to duck out in order to attend. I'm hoping that our fellow forumer LC_Lapen's AMV video is during the first half so I can vote for it.
ADV is actually still around, they've come out with a few new anime, sub-only thought, and under an affiliate named Sentai Filmworks, and they've picked up a few license-rescues from Geneon and Central Park Media. But I am sad to see they have no panel or booth, although the vendor list and schedule isn't final.
I honestly didn't know that about ADV. I'll have to check out this Sentai Filmworks soon, to see what they've been up to. Thanks for that info.
Cross-posting from the Cosplay AX09 Thread. This is regarding the games that Suupaa Kaizoku Cosplay is planning to host–
Since it's our first year doing these games, and AX is too big of a convention to offer ribbons to attendees, we decided to attempt giving away ribbons as prizes. In case you cant read them–
FUTURE PIRATE KING – Scavenger hunt
SCHOLAR OF OHARA – Trivia contest
DAVY BACK FIGHT SURVIVOR – For all DBF participants
LUFFY JOLLY ROGER PIN – DBF Winners
DBF Winners will also (probably) be able to get a free 4x6 print from e1n's artist alley booth. Just gotta figure out a way to systemize this so that he's not just giving those away to everyone that's asking. Also, there will be another way to win the Luffy Jolly Roger pin in case you are on the losing side(s) for the DBF. I'm just not going to tell you how to win it. :p
So what's the deal with the ribbons? Wear them on your badges to show your One Piece love. Or better yet, get yourself a fan badge that you can wear to ANY convention you go to and place them on that. They're made in such a way that you can ladder stack them, like so:
Sadly, we are not permitted to have signs at AX, so you'll have to do your best to find us. Once we figure out the actual convention schedule and plan accordingly, we'll try to arrange specific meeting places for us to be easily found. Happy hunting and good luck with the games!
! Only one of each ribbon will be given out. We only have a finite amount of ribbons and pins, so once we're out, we're out. Also, no complaining about the quality of the prizes. They're awesome, and I had to pay for them to be made out of my own pocket. Don't like them? Then don't play. We're hoping to make this a yearly thing, thus these prizes are just to test out the waters. Believe me, I wish I were rich enough to just give out gashapon figures or something as prizes. Help me win the Lotto, then I can do that. :3
Looks awesome! How very generous of you ^___^
Here it is, the last evening before the madness. Hopefully I can get some good sleep.
Hope to see you all there at the dinner tomorrow!
Cross-posting from cosplay forum–
Okay...sadly, probably not going to be able to go to the Day 0 Dinner. Last big Masquerade prop is behind schedule in construction, so I'll just be able to go pick up badges then head back. Maybe I'll see a fellow AP-er there, maybe not.
How to find me to participate in the Suupaa Kaizoku Fun Time Games of AX:
Day 1--cosplaying as Aokiji; look for a bunch of marines, easiest to spot being Sengoku with his bird hat
Day 2--cosplaying as Sanji; look for a few Strawhats in the Mafia Colorspread costumes walking around with a Mihawk and his giant sword
Day 3--cosplaying as Ben Beckman; look for the Red-Haired Pirates walking around with Buggy and Blackbeard
Day 4--Plain clothes? If so, I'll be wearing a gray/brown fedora; most likely I'll be sitting outside in the shade; look for my name badge with the OP Prize ribbons
I thought about getting my badge today, but it looks like that's not gonna happen, too lazy. I'll probably show up in the afternooon tomorrow to get it.
Well, missed the meeting at 6, damn Pre-reg is longer than I thought it usually was.
Going to Johnny's now to see if I can't catch some of you there.
So far, I've spotted an awesome Jewelry Bonney, Mihawk, Alvidia, and a shabaondy Luffy.
Im telling all those that are there already to Have fun! :D
I'm getting there tomorrow, see yas.
I'm getting there tomorrow, see yas.
Wait, tomorrow tomorrow or today tomorrow?
. . . 'Cause you posted at 2 in the morning, know what I mean?
I meant Thurs…and I remember replying that before I left, but I must have messed something up :3
Anyway, I'm back. It was a fun weekend, picked me up a few lewts, saw a few familiar faces, though not as many as I would have liked. Masquerade really sucked this year, I left early.
I'm probably behind on this news, but 5 volumes of one piece manga a month?? And weekly jump skipping forward? Sweet!
Biggest thing for me was seeing the new Gatchaman movie preview. /drool been looking for that to pop up for a long time.
Cross-posting from the AX Cosplay thread.
Well, AX is all well and done. I just got back after helping out to clean my friend's garage from all our cosplay materials, especially for the Thousand Sunny, so you'll all have to bear with me. This'll be a long-winded post. And no pictures in this one, because I'm exhausted. Not so much to ramble and rant though.
OP Cosplayers – This had to be one of the best yet. There was a lot more variety this year compared to previous years. Sadly, some of the awesome cosplayers were unable to attend the gathering, like Rayleigh and Franky with "Strong Right" and "Weapons Left" (and I don't even think I got a pic of that Franky...doh). The gathering was great fun, although, I wasn't exactly prepared to host the gathering! That was quite the shocker. Hope that it wasn't too boring, and I hope I didn't leave any cosplayers out.
Davy Back Fight -- Thanks to all who attended the games. I really hope that you guys had as much fun as I had helping host and organize. There are a lot of things we'd like to work out with the games, especially the Buggy Balls. Painted rubber balls will NEVER be used again. I apologize to any participant who's cosplay got ruined because of it. My Beckman sash got ruined as well, but luckily I was able to just wrap over the part that got paint on it. Here's hoping we can do it again next year, or even at another convention (coughFanimecough).
Trivia Contest -- Trivia contest was a double edged sword. I guess I need to do a better poll of questions because apparently everyone thought they were too tough. I guess it was kind of skewed since Suupaa Kaizoku members were polled to the difficulty. I just have to say that I LOVED all of your reactions to the first question you received that was really hard, even if it wasn't labeled "hard." Generally, the first statement was, "That's a Medium/Easy Question?!" I just loved the fact that I can shake your fandom knowledge to it's core. =p It was especially fun during the Davy Back Fight, specifically the 3rd to last question. "Name four current...Vice-Admirals. No one? Three Vice-Admirals? Okay...TWO Vice-Admirals?" That was the best.
Scavenger Hunt -- Looks like I'll have to remedy the hardest part about it...finding us a second time. Hahahaha... My original idea was to have my own and one other SK member's cell numbers on the flier. That would've worked well. However, next year, we're hoping to have an artist alley booth for kudos to you/Hanshi. That'll make it way easier to find us. Probably would list my cell phone anyway.
Masquerade -- Terrible terrible experience. We were forced to go first. Our lighting cue was off, so our dialogue started in the dark. Our intro was lost, so our skit didn't make any sense. The intro was supposed to help set up the Out of Character skit. Also, back stage, we couldn't hear ANYTHING. All the sound was muffled, so we could barely make out any other skit. We weren't the only ones with terrible technical experience either. Thumbs down. Boo-urns.
God, this post is long. Lastly are shoutouts.
To AP members: Sorry I didn't have a chance to hang out some more with you all, especially to firecrouch, LC_"Lapen", and Toshiya. After the Viz panel, we pretty much left that day in order to do more masquerade prep (which obviously didn't help). And to AP cosplayers, keep up the great work with your costumes. I love seeing side/obscure characters, and original designs on a familiar thing.
To Gomu Gomu no Cosplay people: I don't know if any members actually read this board, but thanks again for making it another fun convention. Sorry for taking time away from your selling stuff, but it's just so fun talking with all of you! Wish I could've seen the Edo era OP costumes, but I'm glad I got to see your Impel Down and Hetalia costumes, and especially the Kamabakka costumes. Great stuff! See you guys at Comic-Con.
To Mr. 13: Check your PM box later. You and your friends are getting those ribbons.
Lastly, to e1n: What can I say, man. I purchased my first ever OP fanart from you way back at AX07. You already hooked me this year with your Buggy poster a few months back. The Supernovae Double Poster was just icing on the cake. And when you unveiled that table cloth...Like I said after, I'm hoping that I'm not going to make it a collection of your table cloths, because I probably won't have enough tables for them! Seriously, it's an infinitely awesome piece of work, and I'm just glad I was able to get the first of what I'm sure will be a successful line of your works. I'll definitely take care of it and display it with pride. Thanks again for your sponsorship of our Davy Back Fight, and for just being plain awesome.
Jesus fucking Christ. It's only late January, and Anime Expo is already very troubling.
1. Multipe AX Staffers Resign in Board Dispute–
Basically, many of the AX Concom division managars are in disputes with the board of directors of the SPJA, mostly with the new CEO. With the managers planning to resign, potentially 400 of their staff members are ready to quit with them, and that isn't including the normal volunteers. Besides less organization of actual convention operations, this could include even more of a botched Masquerade, less programming, fewer guests of honor and big name guests (don't look to Oda coming anytime soon), and just quite possibly a poorer experience compared to recent years. Which is a shame because I have fond memories from all my previous AX experiences, even if some weren't as fun as others,.
2. With AX still trying to approach Comic Con-type appeal (although not succeeding, really), they've raised their prices dramatically this year. Last year, one couldn't pre-register until March or so. I assumed the same for this year. How wrong I was. Pre-reg has been open since July 8 of last year, and the prices are way high. Currently, the price for a 4-day pass is $55 until January 31, and then it increases to $65 until April 30, until finally capping at $75 until the day of the con. I'm sorry, but as much as I love AX, it isn't worth $75 to me. So gonna pre-reg early, but not enough funds to pre-reg before Monday. If you're planning to go for 4 days, better get yours early.
So theres only 4 day prices?
how much is it just for 1 day?
