One Piece Characters Similiar to Lupin? Coincidence?

The other day, I was watching an episode of the Lupin III tv series and I noticed something. Sanji, Nami, Usopp, and Zoro seem really similiar to Lupin, Fujiko, Jigen, and Goyamon respectively.

Note: I am not saying they are the same… everything below are just my own personal observations

Think about it. Lupin III and Sanji are both really suave and always try to get into both Fujiko and Nami's pants respectively. Lupin and Sanji both also wear suits.

Fujiko and Nami are always interested in any way to make money, as they are/were both former thieves.

Usopp is a great marksman, like Jigen, even though Usopp doesn't use guns yet. Zoro and Goyamon are both swordsman, don't talk very much, and both dislike Nami and Fujiko for personal reasons.

I also think there is a similarity between Captain Smoker and Inspector Zenigata, too, since they're both obsessed with catching Luffy and the Strawhats and Lupin and co respectively. Plus, they've both been chasing their respective targets combined for more than 36 years! 30 years in the case of Zenigata, and since 2000 in the case of Smoker (when he first appeared in Roguetown/Loguetown)

Anyone think this is purely coincidental? I know a lot of mangaka in Japan were influenced in their works by Lupin, but it just strikes as me as odd that no one noticed this before in One Piece.

Is Oda a big fan of Lupin?

Anyone have any thoughts on my observations?

I think you're just noticing some very common threads and archetypes that could be applied to a lot of characters in stories. Particularly the cat and mouse game of a law enforcer always chasing the criminal. I remember that Monkey Punch actually said that his inspiration for Lupin and Zenigatta was Tom and Jerry (seriously XD).

All their personalities are all very different. Jigen and Usopp have nothing in common other than shooting, and even Goemon isn't like Zoro other than being a swordsman and following similar Bushido ethics.

I do have a doujin of Castle of Cagliostro where all the characters are One Piece characters, though. Sanji is Clarisse. XD

sera also mentioned that characters from one of the newer Japanese drama, Saiyuuki, are also similar to One Piece.

ie. Chohakkai is like Usopp, Sagojou is like Sanji, Rinrin is a thief, ended up blah blah fruits also come out. If you think about it, Goku is monkey (Luffy) and he cares so much about the word "nakama."

Haha…the major influence of all anime/manga is Tom and Jerry! :laugh: I don't know if Oda said that, I saw Monkey Punch at a panel at Comic-Con a couple of years ago where he said that.

As I said, many stories share common character types, no matter where you are, it's also no surprise that a lot of anime/manga would influence each other. And we all know that Oda is influenced by Toriyama.

Lupin certainly is as much of a sucker for Fujiko as Sanji is for Nami. Fujiko leads Lupin on a lot more, though. Nami doesn't have to do anything. XD

put the bold together. i have a big problem with that. it makes me mad everytime i see someone say one strawhat doesn't like another. you know what…they don't like eachother. they all love eachother in a nakama way. sometimes it may seem like sanji and zoro don't like eachother but if one were to die the other would be as miserable as the rest of the crew. and if you think zoro doesn't like nami then someone isn't too familiar with skypiea.

well to sum it up...stereotype. those are all typical characters. the flirt,the greedy person. in this case woman, the marksman, and the badass dude with a sword.

It's true that Zoro really does care a lot about Nami. Everytime she's in danger, and Nami can't see Zoro, he's overwhelmed with concern for her. :happy:
