Is it just me, or has Oda been drawing Nami a little different? I noticed the difference in ch 403. Maybe it's her nose, or something? Was curious if anyone else was feeling this way. I don't think Oda's evolving his drawing style again, but maybe he's making the females look less generic Any info on this?
Nami: New look?

Oda's style has changed a little sence the start of the Davy Back Fight arc. It's not just Nami, you can notice it will all the characters. It's mostly in the nose and the twig thick waists on women. Also, Chopper is more rounded were as he used to be more detailed and kinda fat.
-
Oda's art style subtly changed during the Don Krieg arc. Notice how Usopp's face changed drastically between Kuro and Arlong.
-
Yup, when Usopp was introduced in the Kuro arc his nose had a nasty little slope in it that was one reason I didn't like him earlier on but then it straightend out I guess.
-
All of the characters have changed somewhat due to Oda's style changing. I kind of like it. It's like their growing up.
-
Well it's being mimmicked in the anime lately (Movie 7 seems to use Oda's newer manga style) and it's really hit or miss for me. the noses seem to jsut shoot downward and loose definition (just look at how awesome Zoro's nose looks in Deblas' sig image up there) the mouths are looking a bit….square-er and less curved.
I like the style in the manga, but for the anime th estyle that was in Movie 2 and 4 looks the best for me.
-
I noticed that after the Kuro arc, Usopp barely lifts his eyebrows. He always looks mad :O

I disagree. One Piece was never drawn to be realistic (as is the case with mature looking characters), but cartoonish, flowing, and goofy; Oda's current style is making the same progression Toriyama did with Dragonball, from the comic Dragonball to the fight-intensive Dragonball Z. As such, Toriyama's characters became "older looking" by having abnormal muscle blockiness, square jaws, simmlar clothing (because they were easy to draw) and raging personalities; as such, the story of Dragonball degraded along with the character appearances. Thankfully, Oda has lost none of his comedic steam, but I can only hope this "older" look is just a byproduct of the stress incurred by Robin's departure, and hopefully it will fade away by the end of the Water 7 arc.
-
i disagree with your disagreement. joking :o)
but i like the idea that the characters are visibly aging and i hope for it to continue.
-
So are their looks aging or are they actually aging because I read something (maybe wikipedia) that said Luffy was 18.

It's just the new style that makes them look a little older.

Luffy is 17 according to Oda.

Let's drop the age/maturing topic…
Let's stay focused on the artwork/style. I'm interested in getting pictures in here showing the gradual changes in Oda's style.

Sure. Let's take Nami.
She went from this:

Nami's shoes pre-Arlong were yucky looking.
Usopp changed a LOT too

…Yeah I agree. She slightly changes in her appearance. But that's natural given a mangaka develops his stlye during a manga (especially such a long as OP).
I have noticed some similarities between Nami and Robin concerning the nose nowadays. -
All of the characters look somewhat different from when they were first introduced, Usopp and Luffy especially. I was reading through some very early chapters recently and I was amazed at how much Oda's art has actually changed. But, when you've been drawing a series for nine years, your art's going to evolve, right?
-
Of course Nami's changing, Oda's said it in the SBS that her bust size increased. An improvement I'd say.
-
Her ears have gotten less noticable.
-

Yeah I noticed that one too…
-
yes, it has been a long time ago, since luffy face is look like alike as nami face.
maybe, the artist who is usually draw luffy is having his/her holiday, or have been laid off by oda or something else, so, the artist is the one who draw nami and luffy is only one person now. -
Assistants don't draw main characters…
-
I dunno, it's her new costume, they make her boobs look smaller again.
-
I see the changes but i don't really care.
-
Actually, I've noticed in the last chapters that he's drawing softer features on Nami's face. He's also corrected the necks; during the beginning of the Water 7 arc he started drawing weird conic necks on the male characters.
Also, check out this link, it shows the different costumes the characters have worn, and is a good way to see how Oda's style has evolved:
-
Personally, I believe that Zoro and Usoppare the ones with the most changes, other than just a more mature look throughout the series. Usopp's far more rounded face (and a nose that appearently gets longer and rounder with every arc) for an example.
But still, Zoro takes the cake for me. Take a look at the very first Zoro from the Morgan arc, and take a look at him in Water Seven. Seriously. He looked just as boyish as Luffy at first, and was hardly intimidating without his +10 Badassiness Bandana. His body structure has gotten far more muscular and large too.
-
I was gonna make a topic about this a month ago but again…didn't.
I was looking at Baratie arc where Johnny and Yosaku was inviting them to baratie on the boat and I just looked at the style, fast forwarded to Enies Lobby and seriously....all I heard was.

If you draw the same character over and over and over, your art style will change without noticing it.
When Oda frist draw the manga, his art was goofy, lighter and cartoonish. Now his art is darker (inker), and less cartoonish. I kinda wish Oda's artstyle in chapter 1 would continue today. Yet I look closer at his artwork today (chapter 405) and found out it did not really improve that much. Oda's artstyle is the same except he put more effort, complex design, inker outlines, and sharp art work. I notice that sometimes Luffy started to look like his earlier counterpart in chapter 400-404.
It's not like art evovluted, it's a natural human skills, that you start to draw differantly and started to put much effort in it.
This happens to me, when I draw the same character over the week but when I look back I notice the differances in the design.

yes, i really liked movie 7's look. very cool.
i notcied the stle change. ussopp as you said looks alot different. i also noticed at the beginning of the seires, everyones fingers were…...round? like, they were perfectly round at the end er somehint like that, sorry, it's hard to explain. -_-;

Wow! Looking at that, it seems to me like Chopper's changed the most.
-
Yeah, Chopper was really round.
It looks like the biggest changes are to the characters nose, chin, and neck.
-

I'm noticing that the side of Sanji's hair that covers his eye changes. More proof of Sanji having two eyes?
-
How did Shanks's scar switch sides?
-
Horizontal flip in paint -__- but i dont know WHY they did it.
-
Chopper definitley went from looking like a reindeer to looking like a cute little stuffed animal.
I think the biggest change is in the eye proportion - for example when Zoro or Sanji first appeared, they both had fairly large, round eyes, which are now smaller and more angular. Nami's have also gotten smaller (but not as drastically) while Usopp's have actually gotten comically larger.
-
Actually, I think it was from walrus/dog thing to reindeer to stuffed animal with horns.
-
They just lost a little weight is all
-
Zoro's hair also has gotten more spikey.
In the beggining, it seems as if Zoro's hair was just fuzzy. In the new chapters, his hair is more defined and spikey.
-
How did Shanks's scar switch sides?
It never switched sides. Here´s a close up of the same image that shows that the scars are on Shanks´ left side of the face.
-
Robin's hair has gotten longer as well.
-
Well u can't cut your hair on a boat ^^
Joking aside, very nice pic that evolution one. Saved. And personally I like the way the art changed… specially Nami who left from childish to a more young adult look. Zoro looks better too. Even chopper. All of them look a lot better now than when the manga started/they first appeared.
-
For the different side, it's because the 15 first book in french were in the "occidental reading way" (left to right) and yes it's a shame :-)
-
Yeah, since some people just can't accept culture differences and HAS to mirror the whole darned thing. :P
BUt yes, Chopper is a remarkable change, too. Do they have aerobics equipment on that boat? He lost AT LEAST 50 pounds.

You don't need aerobic equipment when your crossing deserts, going to anisland in the sky, and going aginst the world government.

Lovely! Everyone looks like a mutant when flipped, though… laffo.

Wow, great jobs on those Costume / Evolution pages guys! I'll make sure to use them for future references.
As for the drawing style…I stand by what I've always said: I like the Alabasta designs best. The era of more rounded faces, and larger mouths.
However The only ones' I've actually have got something against now, is Nami, Chopper and occasionally Sanji. Nami because her face and body seems to get slimmer and slimmer, and her mouth smaller.
Chopper...well, it just annoys me when his bead becomes 2x the size of his body, instead of the same size.
And with Sanji, it's those weird lips he now forms when going into ero-mode. I never thought I had to see those in OP...The new art has done wonders for Robin, though.
