Question about laptops!

Um, I had a quick question about laptops. I'm planning on getting a laptop at some point in the near future (next few months).

The problem here is that I am an absolute MUSIC fiend. As of now, I have 32 GB of music on my computer, and it's rapidly growing. Now, the laptop that I wish to get has 100 GB on it for base filespace.

My question is whether or not that is what I'm stuck with. Is there some way to get more filespace on said laptop (aside from removeable media and the like), or will it have to stay as 100 GB?

I may be mistaken here, but I don't think laptops have the same expandibility as a tower model computer. If it means that much to you, you might want to try an external hard drive with firewire connectivity. It is a removable media, but other than that, I'm afraid you will have to live with 32 and growing GB on your hard drive.

There might be some compression software, but I don't know if it exists, or what it would do to the quality of your files.

all i know is that it's way more expensive to upgrade a laptop.
I would also recomend an external hard drive.
or an ipod.
can't you keep your current "tower" pc and have the best of both worlds?

A few laptop makers will let you have a second hard disc installed in the space usually occupied by the CD drive. It's usually offered as a RAID (drive array) arrangement, basically rigging two 100Gb drives to act like a single fast 200Gb drive, but at the cost of durability (if one drive goes, the data is usually interleaved so you've lost half of EVERYTHING)

I could do that. The thing here is, my family hates my music (I have, good lord, 8000 songs now). They want it off the main tower. ~~Even though I'M the one who repairs the damn thing, those ungrateful bastards.~~

You could always just burn the music onto disks, that's what I do. These new laptops come with cd burners.

actually a lot of them come with DVD burners now, well as an option.

anyway, trust me, you'll eventually run out of music to download and slow down on your "increasing" library. I know this, because I'm in the same position as you…in the sense I have many many songs ^^;

Going from 0-5000 songs went fast, 5000-10,000 took maybe 6 months, and from 10,000 to what I am now at 12000 or so is taking about 3-4 months. And you should think about going through your songs and deleting the ones you never listen to, especially if you download whole albums like me.

laptop drives are just too small for media libraries
an external hard drive might be an option - they can be quite handy for media storage

I use an external hard drive for all of my music – there's not really any way for me to jack up the HD space on my laptop, especially since whatever space I had went to extra RAM (and believe me you will want extra ram on a laptop, particularly if you're running XP). You can still take 'em anywhere you want, as long as you've got USB cables 'n stuff.

My internal HD gets most of the movies and anime 'n stuff just 'cause it's got a faster playback, so keep that in mind too...

I burn all my anime and other videos. That saves space. If I want to watch it, then I pop the CD in and put the episodes I want to watch on my hard drive. When I'm done I delete them again.
