Is the fan covered in dust?
Try cleaning it.
EDIT: Or mabye it's not getting enough power.
Yeh, it could possibly be dust. For now I can force boot XP, though I don't wanna overheat the CPU, so I'll stay on the laptop.
if you haven't added anything recently to your comp, then chances are, it's either extremely dirty, or needs to be oiled. or you could simply get a new CPU fan =p
You can frequently just find another fan of the same size (typically 60, 70, 80, 92, or 120 mm) and replace it, leaving the heatsink in place. Unbolt the old fan (DELICATELY– don't press the heatsink hard or you might crack the processor itself), bolt the new one on.
To find a matching fan, look for the same size, about the same draw (usually the fan will say "12V DC 150mA" or something similar-- the 150mA or 0.150A is the current draw), and the same connector (3 pin or 4).
can you fit another fan in there? I don't know if this helps, but I don't have a floppy drive, just an empty space to look into my pc. I find that helps keep my inards cool.
this is a CPU fan, unlike fans that go on the sides of your PC case, these MUST be replaced or fixed if not working. Adding another fan to the tower will do little to help cool off the CPU itself.
Yeah, clean your CPU once a month with a can of air if it's in a dusty place. If not, then clean it every other.
Yeh, had a friend replace the heatsink fan which had become defective. Everything seems to be operational again.
Thanks for the support guys.
