I think the time I first stopped liking Japanese animation was when it finally dawned on me, "Wow! A good 70% of this stuff is pretty damn repetative and boring." It was the early summer of 2003 and I simply could NOT force myself to watch the 26 episode Record of Lodoss series. That was the series that killed Japanese animation for me.
I tried oh so many times to watch it! But no matter how many time I sat down and attempted to glue my eyes to the television, my eyelids always ended up falling hard.
Now don't get me wrong, boring and shitty anime are FANTASTIC to watch with a crowd of people. Some of my fondest memories are of anime club in college my freshman year where we tore a new asshole in movies like Macross and series like "Here is Greenwood". And the bashing of our viewing of this one crappy movie which was obviously written by someone on a concentrated form of crack and heroin where a girl turned into a pink weirdo car and another girl drove her through Disneyland with giant crushing gears (the name of which I've obviously forgotten despite it being a huge series) will forever be a legend in our club.
So what Japanese animation have you seen that you could liken to something as interesting as watching an ice cube melt in Antarctica?
