I think every female on my contact list on MSN uses it (All 2 of them, haha) gets annoying when its overused, just like with any emote I guess.

I believe it refers to nervous laughter. You know, like when you're in an awkward situation that nevertheless calls for laughter – say, your girlfriend having sex with a gigantic panda: You want to cry, but you laugh, instead. Your eyes shut, your mouth gapes, and lo and behold!!

In the old forums it used to look something like this :laugh: except with a X as the eye and I just use as a more stronger way of saying lol (laughing out loud)

Though they forgot to capitalize the X.
