Now this has probably already been discussed but I didn't find anything when I did a search for "What is the One Piece." I personally think that the "One Piece" is the one true history. Gol D. Roger has a connection to the missing hundred years like all those that carry the name of D. Also robin has realized that he can read the ancient languages and that he used clues on the blocks to get to the final island in the grand line. This is supposedly where one piece is. Also Roger wanted people to find one piece and since it has been infered that the world government is actually an evil entity and he is a pirate against the world government. So it could be said he wanted people to find a the truth and bring it down. So even in death he is fighting the world government.
What is the "One Piece?"

Thanks in advance for letting me borrow your sig, AWB.

I think.. One Piece.. is the togetherness among the nakama in the Pirate Board… They have to be a team to stay and keep their ships sailing along the grand line.. without this they wont be able to reach the last island.. When they managed to reach it.. They have gained the true meaninng of togetherness which is One Piece

…and it's also love and cookies and rainbows and lemonade.

anybody played that game "Skies of Arcadia"?
spoiler alert (for that game)
there's a legendary pirate called Daccat in that game, and the heroes tried get his legendary legacy in a place called Daccat's Island. They managed to reach the treasure only to found out that the treasure was just a piece of coin and a letter congratulating them for reaching the treasure as a whole crew. The coin itself is the most expensive sellable item in the game.
end of spoilerif Oda does an ending like that, we know where he got that ;p
but I certainly hope not. Maybe the One Piece is the source of all devil fruit? Maybe Roger was the kind of guy who worships power above all else, so his treasure was the source of power itself. -
I think Gold. D. Roger had a devil fruit power, and One Piece is One Piece of uneaten devil fruit, the same devil fruit he had eaten which gave him his power…
IMO, I think that he had power over gold, able to turn things into Gold, control it, etc, and he used these powers to become super powerful and super rich
Afterward when he got the reputation as the most powerful and richest man in the world, he felt that he had nothing left to accomplish, that his life was complete and there was no more reason to be living, so he let himself be caught and exicuted, and left "One Piece" for some lucky pirate to find
And from what I've seen, in the end One Piece is going to be in Logue town (Like under it or something) since that place is known as "The beginning and the end" so that's where their adventure in the grandline started (Well, before it started when they got ready to go there) and it will be the end of their adventure as well. Not to mention we still have alot of questions about the character known as "Dragon" so they'll have to come back if we will ever find out anything more about this character
(Either that or Dragon will meet up with the gang later) in the end, there will be a battle so great it destroys the entire island and sinks, and only one will be left to get "One Piece" But since Luffy already has a devil fruit power, he'll either give it to some one else, get rid of it, destroy it, or let it sink with the island, or sink along with the island and die happy, knowing that he became the ultimate pirate, and goes down in history as the king of the pirates.
Luffy's left over Nakama will be very sad, but then resume life (Cept Zoro, I bet when after he defeats Hawkeyes his wounds will be so bad that he'll only have a short while to live, lend one more helping hand, then die)

it is a sausage, yo.
on a less serious note, wouldn't it be awesome if it was something totally typical and lame? like a chest filled with gold coins.
-
One Piece= 1 piece of LAND no more & no less
The best thing about this land is that it's made of meat for Luffy to eat -
"Its the name of the treasure in the Grand Line. Yai yo,yai yo!"
Sorry, just had to do that XD. -
I think all the keys are not the true keys~~
real key should be in somewhere else~~or maybe Nami or Usoppu will break it~~~

Sadly, I think it's a cascade of homosexual yaoi-inspired men dancing together in a small tree-hut and forces Zoro to join them, and as he accepts, Nami contemplates suicide, while Luffy drowns Mr. 2!!
…
I think it's just a note.. a word.. or a feeling that one achieve through the power of friendship.

OP is the ticket for going to Nightmare difficulty after beating the last boss.
or a bannana.
One of the two, i'm sure.

Ah, the old times…
Laziness struck me this time around, I'm not going to search up all threads with the same matter in discussion. Bumping an old thread just keeps things more organized. In Sovi... in Arlong Park, old threads are reused! Carter pwn'D the topic already anyway but, still, it's nice theory though (pretty popular one too, to the boot.)

I think One Piece is exactly that, One Piece. Eichiro Oda travelled to another world, in where he envisioned an unprecendented journey of mass proportions. After the vision was over he wrote it all down (as well as drew it) and gave it to Gol D. Roger. Oda called this work One Piece, and him and Roger sat it upon the last island in the grand line. Oda came back to our world to retell the great strory week by week, while Roger died and told the world about his amazing treasure. When Luffy opens the treasure he will find about 100 volumes of ONE PIECE, retelling the exact journey hes been on.

XD
That'd be awesome. :3

I think that Luffy will have to fight Shank`s crew in the final arc to retrieve the treasure and then they open it to find a One Piece bathing suit and then they drop their mouths and the series ends.
Or in the dub, they will say:
It turns out the Treasure chest was just a test of our royalty amoung friendship. The real treasure was the adventure to find out. We worked together and became "One Piece". -
I think the One Piece is a little bit more complex than just a physical manifestation of whatever someone might think it'll be. I believe that One Piece is more of the journey every pirate makes to reach it than anything else. I.e. For Luffy it would be the path to the "throne" of the Pirate King. His battles, the way he evolves and learns, the nakama he makes and the experience he gains through his journey. For Zoro it would be the struggle to become the strongest swordsman and beat Mihawk and blah blah. I have the feeling that Oda is up to something like that, for Gol D. Roger to find one piece, being just a metaphor for fulfilling his dream and this is what everyone else is out to do. ( This makes the whole "Whitebeard is closer to One Piece" more understandable to me. He's been through a lot of stuff in his life and near the end of his life,he's almost achieved anything he wanted)
Just my thoughts :)

It would be fascinating if (and it's the coin collector in me talking)
One Piece were a single coin, BUT…
while in Roger's time the coin would have been a huge insult and a joke answer, today it is so exceptionally rare and valuable it actually was worth the trip financially speaking -
The One Piece is basicly the first exemplar of the "One Piece" Manga by Eiichiro Oda
Gol D. Roger got it when he reached Raftel and read the Rio Poneglyph
