See, the thing is people in media are able to say crap without a problem. Shit on the other hand is not so well accepted so (at least in my opinon), it's understandable why they use crap instead of shit.
New Official Viz Manga Discussion

@Kuwabaraman:
Well, Viz is the only company that can bring over Shounen Jump titles now, so that's poinitless to hope for that. And they won't drop it. One Piece might not sell as well as Naruto or Death Note, but it still sells well(which is why the volumes get reprints).
I have my doubts that anybody would even want it if the series drops off so much that Viz cancels it. If that's the case, then the anime has failed as well as the manga. You can make the argument that the dub was spectacularly awful, but the same cannot be said for the comic.
Well, the only thing worse than crap is shit.
And they're not going to put that.
Isn't crap the closer English equivalent to kuso anyway when it comes to the way it's used in society? It's not a particularly strong Japanese curse word, is it?

And I'd gag if Tokyopop got this. Ever seen their releases of Gundam manga? It's not pretty, I'll tell you that much.
Viz may make the occasional gaffe, but they're worlds ahead of Tokyopop in quality.
And leaving in honorifics for a series like One Piece is stupid. The only time you should leave them in is if a series is clearly Japanese in nature. One Piece is not.
I haven't read the Gundam Manga, but I've read Saiyuki and Saiyuki Reload, and Tokyopop did a decent job on those. Samurai Champloo was okay, and I didn't see a problem with FLCL. But I'm so fustrated at Viz because of their edits to Tenchi Muyo and Dr. Slump, and I question the reason they changed "Dying Will Bullet" To Deathperation Shot in Katekyo Hitman Reborn (I still question that, it's silly). But they did a great job in FMA, with only one edit so far to remove a Judeo-Christian Reference (Which is Silly, the damn guy's name is Greed, he's one of the seven deadly sins directly relating to that). It's just so inconsistent.
-
Yeah, Viz has dumb some dumb stuff, which I certainly don't like.
But I'd take that over Tokyopop's handling of the various Gundam SEED manga, where they changed characters genders, then tried to cover their tracks by claiming 'no one is sure whehter he is a male or female' in a later volume, not to mention putting in statments that are blatantly incorrect and create plotholes.
Compared to that, toning down the swearing and the occasional bit of cheezy dialogue is a small price to pay.
-

Yeah, I wish they didn't have to edit out the penises and underage smoking in "Dr. Slump". It's still funny though (and I'd like to see the anime come out here someday). I was disappointed with the Deathperation Shot too, but then I found out it had to do with a pun (if it's true that's ironic considering how Shonen Jump handles puns). The "Fullmetal Alchemist" edit was just silly.
-
If "Deathperation Shot" is a pun, what's the original term (assuming it isn't meant to be a play on "desperation")? Yeah I'd prefer it if they kept "Dying Will Bullet", but to me it's a small change I can live with. Heck, truth be told I didn't know the original term was "Dying Will Bullet" until I read some scanlations.

Gintoki from Gintama. The cover says that only 2 chapters of Gintama are left to be put into Shonen Jump. The top bar shows Naruto, and there are small pictures of Ryuk (Death Note, advertising a Death Note-baed puzzle in the issue) and Ichigo (Bleach, advertising summaries of new Bleach episodes in English) on either side of Gintoki.
Please tell me that they have previews for the D. Gray-Man anime. I've sent DOZENS of letters to Viz saying that they need to put out preiews of it and that it needs dubbing bad. That and they need to do up the buso Renkin anime. …No more Gintama? That sucks, considering how many people asked for it to be serialized...
-
It seems to me like Viz, for whatever reason, doesn't want to serialize any new series, post-Hikaru no Go. While the volume releases are certainly pretty fast, they don't work as well for a series still running in Japan. Prince of Tennis is alright for now since there are 36 volumes in Japan and only 17 in America so far, so that's good for another couple of years, but with more recent series like Gintama, it's not like they'd be able to release them that fast anyways.
Why not put it in the magazine? Especially since Yu-Gi-Oh! doesn't have that much time left in the magazine, as it is.
-

They have a page dedicated to it, but not much more than a bunch of screenshots and fullbody shots of some of the characters.
There's nothing about any impending dub or anything like that.

If it's the reason that they were cutting back on One Piece, I won't be sorry to see it go. I really can't muster much more than a "meh" response to it.
-
Well, I think with serialization, it's a lose-lose.
If you take a short running series, you're rolling the dice that it won't be cancelled in Japan after 10 volumes or less.
Long-running series have other problems: If it's a 200,300, 400 chapter series, probably some of your customers won't want to wait 15 years to catch up with Japan, or they've been spoiled in other ways (i. e. seeing anime adaptations), or the series is one of those that's long running but difficult to adapt to Western markets (ie something history-heavy or culture-dense)
-

Seconded. I read some Gintama and it's like a comedy version of Rurouni Kenshin set in Industrial Japan with spaceships, cars, VCR's and guns.

Heh even though they're completely stretching Yugioh out… I don't see why I mean they could have been done by June with the main series and then went into the GX manga... but then they moved Duelist to bi-monthly and now they started this crap where it's going to take ten months to get the second to last volume of Yugioh Millenium World.
I never read Gintama though so I don't got any feelings on that...
You know something though? I kinda wish they would pull a monthly release with the longer series like they did with Rurouni Kenshin... or at least do it with Shaman King. I mean it's not like there's any reason to drag THAT out and they drag the release of shaman king more than Naruto and One Piece at this point which really pisses me off considering it's already "finished" in Japan so to speak.
We'd probably get more efficient graphic novel releases if the magazine didn't exist. Heck I wouldn't mind if it didn't. I don't even read it anyways. I just buy the Graphic Novels.
-

Didn't expect anything about it being dubbed. Thanks for telling me!

That's just how I feel. Imagine how much further we'd be in One Piece, Naruto and Shaman King if they did that from the start. Heck, there's a chance they may not have bothered with the "over censoring" that bugs some readers.
As for Gintama, I'm glad it'll be dropped soon. I voted for it to be released in graphic novels and not to be serialized.
-

I definitely would also prefer to have OP unserialized in the American Jump, even if it it only alters the release dates to every two months instead of every three months. I mean, that's what they're doing for BLEACH, which has more NTSC volumes released despite being almost twenty JP volumes shorter than One Piece.
I sort of doubt they would alter their translation or censorship, though. I mean, aren't they translating to a particular rating standard, like Teen, Mature, etc? They probably couldn't make language edits without raising that rating, which I doubt they are considering.
-
I don't get it. Why doesn't Viz flop One Piece when they flop Inu Yasha?
-

They're completely random. I mean, their FMA translation is great. DBZ was okay. Rurouni Kenshin okay. And then some, like One Piece…. aren't so great.

Got the new issue of Shonen Jump. Heres a coupla notes:
–Number of One Piece chapters, 3
--The Jango mini-arc begins!
--Sanji's "kuso restraunt" line was translated as "Restaraunt le Crap" (Even better than I was expecting.)
--Vivi is called by her first name, Nefertari. (Not sure whether it was like that in the original or whatever)
--"Den Den Mushi" = "Snail-o-phone" :ermm: (Before hand I think it was "Telesnail")
--I have a bizarre feeling that the Blue Dragon manga will be coming sometime in the future...

…That's bad... >_<
BTW, I was rereading FMA volume 9 and noticed a translating error.
Alphonse: Big broth...
Edward: Geez, Ed. You scared the CRAP out of me!
There's a handful of little typos in that volume. Still beats "snail-o-phone"...
-

Inuyasha, like Ranma 1/2, is a much older Viz release that they began doing when manga was still relatively unknown. They've continued flipping those older titles for consistency, I believe.
Thankfully this practice is no longer used, and essentially no manga titles get flipped these days.
-
"Snail-o-phone" huh? Den Den Mushi would have been nice but I can live with "Snail-o-phone". "Snail-Phone" would have been better though.
-
Atleast they don't call it (Transponder Snail), like in the dub. :D
-
I like snail-o-phone… Even Telesnail is good in my mind. Besides what else would you call it?
-

Hooray the swears are back!,I would have gone with Snail phone, Why do they Vivi by her last name?
-
Whoa, wait a second, is Vivi called "Nefertari" or "Nefeltari" like in the other ones? And HeatX, what do you mean swears are back? You mean crap? ( I don't consider crap a swear word, seeing as how I use it at least 6 dozen times a day)
-
"Restaurant Le Crap"? Hm, I kind of like that. Not bad, Viz.
And they called Vivi Nefertari? Not Nefeltari? Well, that's good. It shows that they realized their botch and corrected themselves. And now Malintex Terek has one less item to bitch about.
I'm not sure how much I like "Snail-o-phone". I sort of prefer Telesnail, but Den Den Mushi was probably too Japanese for their target audience, I guess. I can live with it.
-
Oh right, sorry to burst the bubble, but Nefeltari is what was used in this issue. I typed Nefertari just a force of habit because I always read it as "Nefertari". I should of clarified that…my bad.
-
I could get used to Restaurant Le Crap. It has a catchy feel to it. And is it really Nefertari?! Who knows? Maybe in a few months, they'll be back to Zoro!
Also, Snail-o-phone, while not the greatest, still pretty good. Telesnail was pretty good though too, considering a close translation of "Den Den Mushi" would be Tele Tele Snail.
-
I gotta say, I like the dub's name better "Transponder Snail Phones". "Snail-O-Phone" kinda sounds stupid… Though I soppose "Den Den Mushi" doesn't sound much smarter. ^_^;
-
It's okay, considering that Den Den Mushi is totally a pun in of itself, its kind of a bitch to translate.
"dendenmushi" = The stand alone Japanese word for "snail"
"denwa" = telephone
A literal translation of how the original uses the word would be "Electric Electric Bug".
-

And isn't "Mushi Mushi" what Japanese people say as a generic phone greeting (like "hello")? Or maybe that's moshi moshi or moushi moushi… whatever... I don't study Japanese.
-

Yeah thats that one.
I don't study Japanese.
Give it a go if you ever get the opportunity .
-
In chapter 126, they call it telephone snail. In chapter 127, they call it snail-o-phone.
-
Well, on the plus side, it was "Flaming Oni-Giri" instead of "Flaming Demon Slash"
-
It's always been Oni-Giri. Even 4Kids called it Oni-Giri.
-

Yes i do mean Crap, the US verison of the One Piece manga hasn't put any swears or Curse words since Arlong Saga ended
-
Give it a go if you ever get the opportunity .
You know, I probably will eventually. I already speak English and Spanish very well (I'm not fluent in Spanish, but my mother is) and I've been a student of the French language for the past seven years; I like learning languages so much, I have been thinking of trying either Japanese or Italian next.
-

Actually, I remember Sanji saying "crap" a number of times throughout Viz's translation…
-
also the shitty resturant turned into Resturant le crap. that's not bad, IMO
-
Sanji has said crap in every volume since he's appeared.
-
Hell, volume 7 is called "The Crap-Geezer".
-
almost to drum arc
-
True, that. Nice that Chopper will finally make his way over here in printed form. :) I never did read Drum in the manga, I started in Arabasta.
-
Yeah… Although Chopper looked fugly when he first debuted. XD
-
I know, it shocked me when I saw some of those old images…he looked like a fat ugly dog with antlers. Now he looks like an uber cute stuffed teddy bear with antlers.
-
True, that. Nice that Chopper will finally make his way over here in printed form. :) I never did read Drum in the manga, I started in Arabasta.
I started mid-Skypiea.
-
OK, then. I got March's SJ, and I read the One Piece. and it looked good. Nothing horrible. In the previews for next volume, the One Piece preview says, "The next volume is released Mar. 6th!" I thought hey that's good. a month in advance. but then another speech bubble said "On sale the first Tuesday every month!" What would that mean? like just referring to SJ being sold every first tues? or a One Piece GN released the first tues. of every month? eh?
-
but then another speech bubble said "On sale the first Tuesday every month!" What would that mean? like just referring to SJ being sold every first tues?
Well uh considering NO viz manga comes out every month uhhhh yeah.
-
Eh…Rurouni Kenshin did. and FMA is kinda close to catching up to the Japanese serialization with 1 manga every 2 months. I'm aware FMA isn't serialized here though.
-

March 6 is the first Tuesday of the month, so it's referring to the next issue of Shonen Jump. If a One Piece graphic novel were coming out, then it would be in the Graphic Novel preview section. Seeing as how they don't have One Piece in that section, it means that there isn't a volume coming out that month.
Besides, it says Next Issue: March 6, not Next Volume.
