Help requested to save One Piece

OKay first off… last time I made a thread about this (and I got a moderator's permission to start another) it ended up in flames... please do not flame this time. this is simply a help requested thread not a "debate whether or not this is useless" thread

I've been talking about doing this in the 4kids discussion dub but I want to make sure everyone sees this, not just those who watch the dub.

Okay now I added a new section to the site called "The Plan" it's on the bottom left. I plan to do everything I wrote about in there. I do plan to try my hardest to get a meeting with Al Kahn and if not, Ill go to 4kids headquarters anyway and just WALK IN!.. or not… we'll see. I think I can push my way in politely though. I have a friend in the business world so I kinda know how this stuff works. Anyway I have an online petition, it goes again my better judgement but I think if I keep good tabs on it, it'll be okay... and letters...

I need more letters, I've only gotten one. Please take the time to write a letter. It doesn't need to be huge, it'll take you 5-10 minutes and is more powerful than a signature on a petition could ever be.

if you think this is going to be a fruitless effort, simply DO NOT participate. expressing your pessimism might lead to unpleasantness that we do NOT welcome in this forum. think of this as those dudes standing in front of your local grocery store asking for you to sign petition to save the whales. you don't go up to them and start telling them that what they're doing is useless. if you don't care, simply ignore. if you care, sign.

Okay, Sonique is working hard to get us, the public, a decent OP dub. She has been working on this for ages and is obviously totally committed to it. People like you, who give up before even trying, are of no interest to us, the ones who want a decent English version.

Also, I don't think you read e1n's post. "If you don't care, simply ignore." :dry:

I loved the comparision between PBSkids and 4kids, so true. Anyway, I signed the petition already. I'm still writing my e-mail to them though, since I need to get my student teacher to check it for any errors and unprofessional-ism.

If you can't write decent letters you guys should at least sign the petition, what've you got to lose?

I've already signed the petition and I'll get to work on a business letter! I've never done anything like this before, problably due to laziness. But what the hell?! It's One Piece! Something worth fighting for! YARRR!!

I'll try to write up something. Should there be something specific to say in the letter? I mean, I know it needs to be a "mature" one and not just a letter to flame them, and that I should also avoid bringing up some of the more "trivial" matters, but is there something I should push for in the letter?

Oh, and this PBS thing isn't too much of a surprise to me (when you have no cable, you have to watch SOMETHING on occasion :p ).

I actually emailed the lady who is doing this and she has asked me to ask around to people like Ivotas, and FFU. I'm waiting to get Permission from Seta to do it.

But she said in the letter to try and ask them if they can get the ratings of One Piece in their contry. I should've mentioned that earlier. So my bad.

I visited this site before I saw this thread, and I agree with what was said on it. I am considering writing a letter, but I don't know if I should. The dub totally frips and I hope they stop dubbing it after Alabasta. Seriously, how far can dub the show? I am not looking forward to them fripping up my favourite arc(Skypeia). laughs I called them 4crap on their own forum and they edited my post. Haven't posted scince. Bunch of clorbags.. So anyway has anyone heard if they are going to keep dubbing the show?

well. Here's my letter to Kahn

Dear Mr. Alfred Kahn; CEO of 4kids entertainment,

I was not at first a big fan of One Piece until you picked it up. I do thank-you for picking it up but there was a heavy downside. I was browsing for One Piece things on the net and saw a forum about how you heavily edited it. Having actually seen the original episodes I ask why? I know it's to keep kids from doing stupid things. I can understand the changing of Sake to some type of juice. The editing of Sanji's cigerette. But what I do not understand is the edit of blood and the name changes. Ace to Trace Cobra to Nebra Smoker to Chaser. I can understand Zoro to Zolo. You did that due to copyright reasons for Zorro. But changing Ace to Trace is where I draw the line.

Also; the highly unwanted edits that drive me, and many others off the edge. The editing out of Belle-mere's death. People die all the time. Why not put that in? It's not like kids haven't experienced death before. And why all the episode cutting? To skipped the entire Little graden, and Laboon arc. You've had a full 93 episodes into 54! And the theme song. Why not stick with "We are!"?

Now; The main point in this, and probably most the the emails and or letter you'll be getting over a period of time is you opening up of a 4teens. I would imagine you would show it on Cartoon Network and have it like miguzi. But you could show it between Miguzi and Toonami on Saturdays, Or simply send an un-cut version of One Piece to toonami. That would probably be easier and save alot of cash. Plus One Piece's fanbase and ratings will go through the roof.

I'm trying to convince him to simply put out an un-cut copy

No no no no no…. Asking for an uncut on T.V is not they way to go. Trust me... they'll ignore you if you ask that.

Simply ask them to lighten up on the edits now that it's on Toonami. Asking them for the uncut on T.V is asking for too much. As I've said.... A Naruto style dub would suffice (not uncut, but the edits are minamal... And that's okay)

Oh! And (not to be mean... But...) showing 4Kids Sonique's website is not a very good idea... It's too... Hostile. Which is completely understandable given that this is 4Kids.... But not the best thing to show a company if you're trying to get a point across.

Anyways... I'll think of a letter... Just gotta think what to put.

I have been looking for something like this. I will gladly support it in anyway I can, I will sign the petition and write a letter. And I will also put the banner for the site on any site I can.

I'll be fair here, I'm willing to sign the petitions not to bring in an uncut version on T.V. but I'll sign the petitions bagging 4kids to "lighten" up on the edits. Just as I agreed with Romangod. I'll do this. If they do lighten up on the dub(I meant making less edits and cuts) I believe it can profit them more money to make a unedit and uncut DVD. Right now, One Piece is struggling to it's feet on Toonami so it'll take time to get popluar. I'll sign to help speed that up and get more money to release uncut and unedit OP DVD.

Actually Joekido…. It's not struggling on Toonami. Infact it's doing really good in there. But we could use that some of the other shows (such as Naruto and Zatch Bell) do just as good and don't have many edits. So toneing down on the editing and localizing wouldn't hurt.

Zah, I don't like to repeat myself, but I want to say again that linking your cause to illegal activities like fansubs might end up hurting you more than it helps to spread the One Piece goodness. If you secure a meeting with Al Khan, he's not likely to set aside a great deal of time for someone they don't directly intend to sell their product to, or indirectly in the case of parents. He's gonna want you out the door as soon as he can by defeating any arguements you have with a nice blanket statement or counterpoint and try to get the whole thing under his control. Also it's cool you're getting numbers like ratings for areas not controlled by 4kids. I fear that the plight of viewers older than their target audience will go on somewhat softer ears than if we had a bunch of 7-11 year olds telling them they want to see the real or less edited version of One Piece. I'd write a letter myself, but I'm busy with a flood of term tests this week. I'll write one up on the weekend, hopefully without spilling over into one of my diatribes about xenophobia and western culture XD

Maybe I'm over thinking this whole thing.

Well, Sonique is trying her best cuz of her love towards the series and I don't blame her. I believe we should not take Al Khen in an extreme term to get him to understand so what she needs of course is the correct source and a deep thinking to consired the matter. What 4kids need to do is make less edits and less uncut to profit them more money. I'll love to write a letter to give Al a piece of mind but I got to be careful not to metion fansubs and other illagel websites and tell him that we knew the true source and beg him to reduce the editting.

Al Khen is not techinally stupid, he knew the original One Piece, he just wants to butcher it for the sake of money, we must encourge him to apply to our wish without insulting him. Do not ask for uncut OP on T.V. Dragonball uncut was cancelled due to low rating and OP will face the same thing if Khen puts it like that. Remamber Khen is human so encourge him to change the dubbing policy. If we tell him the source, tell him we knew this from Japanese tankos and Japanese version DVD.

Well it's not that I don't appreciate her effort, because I do. It's just that I feel like we're leaving ourselves open when we think more with our love for One Piece than with our business heads. I might be defending nothing but I really don't want to seem ungrateful to Sonique.

You're right about not thinking of Khan as someone who doesn't know what he's doing. It's easy to see how profits would increase if they lessened editing, allowing older audiences to jump onboard and watch the series on CN or wherever, but would they want it? My impression is that they don't want to have anything to do with things outside their target audience. They must have known the kind of audience it has in Japan, but decided to bring it over anyway, and continue to stick by it. They must be happy with it's limited performance, despite falling off 4kids.tv.

We should be encouraging lesser edits because their target wants it. I feel like I'm repeating myself again, darn.

Well I can do that too, if you read my site I talk about how insulting it is to children to remove Japanese culture things and how PBS will even show religion and such.

It's no so much the insulting to children part that should be brought forth, I doubt they care. It's more like targetted growth will happen if they do. We all know that it'll be more awesome and that children will like it more, we just need to prove it somehow and we're in the money. Or they're in the money, something like that.

PBS is cool and all by the way, but I think they might pull a "PBS is publicly owned and we have shareholders to appeal to" or something, like I said, they'll try to deflate anything you pull out. If we hammer out a defense now, it'll be all the more easier for you.

I want to talk about how some of the edits don't make sence. Like when Zolo hears a whale… and it's really an iceburg :blink: and how Shanks was all, "only a kid drinks juice!" and what are they all drinking? JUICE! (or did they cut that line?) Oh and how they all know Miss Goldenweek when never having met her a and so on...

Well…. In that episode with Shank's saying to Luffy that only kids drink juice.... They actually subsituted "sake" with "strong stuff" so... It really wasn't that bad.
