Yeah, I'm writing my senior English research paper on One Piece. Basically I'm gonna be comparing the Japanese version with the American version. I'm looking for some good opinions/facts to put into it. I've already got some great sources, due to wikipedia and the episode comparison site, but anything else would be welcomed. I'm also looking for a title for my paper. The best I've come up with was :

a good thing to include would be the name changes and their reasons and the weapons changes, or how would it really affect kids if they didn'te dit One Piece, have like a "would it really cause kids to attack each other with swords and smoking" debate, that way you can put others opinions into the piece.
do your best not to sound like a blubbering fan going alL "and they don't pronounce Nami right" or something asinine like that. Make hard points about the ruining of Usopp's character, and the removing of the emotion form the Arlong arc etc.
Heh, I did a paper on this last year as a random paper. Just copied and pasted rants from this forum and slapped em together, BAM, A+.
Include pictures too. May seem childish, but show comparisons and explain them.
Yeah and I think you should leave out the whole annoying Luffy laugh thing and well… "ZOMG THEY CALLED HIM TEH ZOLO AND TOLD HIM TO GOLO ROLO!"
My advice is to just stick to major plot points. Heh I think your section on Little Garden would be interesting.
Do you really need our advice? This paper sounds like good fun; a real tilt while offering good opportunity to vent some pent up 4Kids rage while earning an easy "A". It's a win-win situation; man, I miss High School already. :laugh:
Try to include how it's Japan's most popular show. With merchendise and ratings (I know it only gets third but it gets number one on Fuji TV).
Include how 91 episodes were cut to 59 episodes.
Include the hammer gun, Chaser, TEH LOLLYPOP OF DOOM, and this last part's a stretch but show the guy from Buggy's crew who was turned from Black to White (poorly)

Careful with this one. There is a logical and defendable explanation for this edit.
While many of us don't like it, the whole point is to disassociate "Cool" characters with "smoking" to the eyes of young children watching. and yes, children DO watch Dub-Piece
Then again, dub Sanji's voice does much to remove the "cool" factor from his personality….:ninja:

I'd avoid mentioning this too much, it's one of the few edits that are justified, on top of the fact that no-one noticed it for over a year.
I actually suggest reading Joseph Campell's work "Hero of a Thousand Face" or something, then applied what you learned to One Piece. That what I did for my senior year paper, except it wasn't One Piece but rather Runouni Kenshin. Got a easy A on that paper. Joseph Campbell work can be applied to ANY worthwhile story on this planet, plus it a easy read.

It might be interesting to put some of the edits in a cultural context… how cigarette smoking is now so sinful as to be avoided even when it's a minor factor in a character.
Or how we're editing blood still 10 years after (and I recall it was major at the time) we had a character get shot, bleed, and remain wounded in Gargoyles.

Anyways, I always wondered if one of the reasons little garden was cut, was because Nami is walking around in her bra. Then I think, with all the editing they don't mind doing, just draw a shirt on her. In the amirican version, maybe it was only partially burned.
They did that sort of thing in Dragon ball. The first episode Goku is suposed to be swimming around with full frontal nudity, but in the american version, he has a nice pair of white boxers. To me that is more acceptable than taking out that whole scene.

It was more a factor of "Elbaf's Judgement" and the references the giants made to their god that got it cut.

But to the OP – would you care to share your thesis with us (or me, at least) ? Last year I spent six month working on an enormous research paper of my own and if I know what you're planning to do I can help point you in the right direction, since I've literally walked the path the hard way :laugh: I know what I'm doing, trust me ! You'll feel a lot better handing in a paper that does, say... explicate on the medium of One Piece as a way to develop the strength of the characters and how such editing as we receive it over here affects the original intent of the story, instead of just LOOK THEY TOOK OUT FIFTYSIX EPISODES AL KAHN SUXXXXXXXXX.

Thesis: Eiichiro Oda’s timely shonen classic, “One Piece,” was turned from worldwide phenomenon to unforgivable mistake, due to 4Kids Entertainment’s slicing and editing of the series, along with hackneyed marketing schemes.

Somehow I doubt I could get away with doing something like that in England.
I don't know if you've already considered this, but how about arguing that the series generally does not work well for the audience 4Kids is aiming it at. You could state how the uncut version includes the kind of violence, blood, drinking and smoking that would normally be viewed in a PG13 rated film. You could then go on to say how the cuts 4Kids has had to make can cause various plotholes. Granted I haven't really viewed the dub so I can't say if many are in there, but on the off chance there are any it is an area you could cover. You could also develop on this by comparing the OP dub to some of the others like Naruto and the later DBZ episodes. You could point out that in Japan those three series would be aimed at the same target audience and yet in the dub Naruto and DBZ got away with more and were generally aimed at an older/wider audience range than One Piece dub.
It's just an idea. I don't know beneficial it would be but it's something you could use.
