Okay, before I say anything, please note that it is very, very hard for me to say something in 4Kids' defense. I hate 4Kids as much as the next person. BUT, it's not only 4Kids we have to blame, you know. Dubbing companies have to get the creator's permission before purchasing and licensing a product, don't they? And who gave 4Kids permission to buy and ruin One Piece? Eiichiro Oda. So why, may I ask, doesn't anyone ever say anything about him? They always vent their anger out on 4Kids when they're only half to blame.

A lot of people try to defend Eiichiro Oda by saying that he didn't know what 4Kids were going to do. This is ridiculous. No one, I repeat, no one could be that stupid. Eiichiro Oda sold One Piece to 4Kids for money. And yet, no one ever shows any signs of anger towards this guy. Why? It's his fault, people.

(It was VERY hard for me to defend 4Kids like that, but Eiichiro Oda is also in the wrong. Remember that.)

I do believe that it's the publishers/license holders who have the power to sell properties, not the actual creators. It is nice that you don't see 4Kids as the great white devil, though. Thumbs up for that!

Uh, That was Toei. If the anime never hit American shores, I would not be here. I'm glad there is no time traveling which would ruin our choices and make things worst. I'm glad 4kids brought One Piece but I hate the way they dubs it. Eiichiro Oda gave Toei the permisson to make his manga a anime series, Oda has no control over Toei's decision to give 4kids the permission to license the series. We also bash Toei for the fillers and the way they handle the series. Oda is something not very happy with Toei. The olny thing we bash Oda is when people blame him for letting Toei animate the series and gave the rights to 4kids. If you write a novel, and a animation compeny gets your permission to animate it and they gave the rights to a Japanese animation studio but the studio dubs your novel horribly and the fans there bashs you, how'll feel.

Shueisha is in control of all the business and marketing ends of One Piece. I highly doubt that Oda pays much attention to what any of the foreign dubs do. I don't think he is involved enough to approve or disapprove of what 4Kids has done to the series, though I don't think he would be happy about it if he watched it.

Well, Oda would be laughing if he saw the American dub, I'm sure he won't be happy but Oda is also unhappy with Toei sometimes.

It's Shueisha/Toei that allow 4kids to buy the series, 4kids themselve seems to be selfish when they beat Funimation to grain rights to dub the series. It's the team series we should blame. I longer watched the dub, but I'm here because of it.

FUNimation should have really gotten OP, but I think it was too large for their current line of work; like 4Kids, FUNi started off doing prolonged series dubbing, but since then, FUNi has not only improved the overall quality of what they produce, they've also focused on a large number of standard-length series. Aside from Dragonball and Yu Yu Hakusho (Detective Conan, too?), FUNi now does stuff like ADV and Geneon.

Prior to 4Kids aquisition, I could imagine Shueisha's interest in the company. They managed to maintain some momentum for the Pokemon Anime and personally turned a jump title, Yu-Gi-Oh, into a smaller but nevertheless major phenomenon. 4Kids also handeld Kinnikuman and Shaman King well prior to that, hosted on their own public television channel. One Piece is less foreign than Naruto and Bleach style and content-wise, with less "adult" themes and more focus on adventure. Lastly, 4Kids was a pubic company, with all transactions known.

How was Shueisha to know FUNi would become what it is today, or what 4Kids would do to the series? I'm sure the Japanese are bitting the bullet in regret for their mistake now, but what's done is done. Dubbing companies have done things poorly before (Cardcaptor Sakura, Initial D.), but never to a record breaking show with serious marketing potential, and never in such a humiliating and pathetic way. I suppose it was somewhat of a good thing, though, that 4Kids aquired One Piece; their mistake shocked all competing dubbers into producing good quality shows, Shueisha's own subsidiary Viz/ShoPro included. Even if the OP anime dies in America, people will still hear about it in Japanese news ("What, the crack series on 4Kids? It's the most popular show in Japan? wtf.") so this issue will likely never be forgotten.

WTF xD The guy doesn't even speak English, let alone know all the censorship what-nots of America. He can barely do anything without his editor's consent, let alone ruin American One Piece. Besides, the series could have just as easily been bought by Funi or another company, it's 4kids who decided to shove One Piece through the grinder by putting it in an innappropriate time slot.

Oda only has Final Say on Anything based off his manga. THe Original One Piece Anime was already Given to Toei, So Oda no longer has power over it. Toei now has the right to give it to whoever wants it. and a company, no matter who they are, will go for whoever pays the most.
if I remember Correctly, it was 4Kids ad unimaiowhoVied fr i Orginay. I iwish funi had got it. then there'd Be WAY less Edits, good Voice cast, and no matter how much they have to edit it, there would ALWAYS be an uncut DVD release.

You seriously don't know how the world of anime marketing works, do you? Read some of the previous posts, Oda has no control over the anime, only the manga, therefor Oda's not involved at all with the dub, since he's not involved with the actual anime itself. Toei animation is incharge of One Piece, Oda has no say in what happens, therefor he's not to blame

do yourself a favor and do research on how the anime buisness works, and watch yourself next time. Be happy most of us on Arlong Forums are a little more nicer than people on other forums and that we all didn't end up flaming you and having a Mod close this thread
