Foolio posted a hefty write-up of it the other day, so thought I'd mention that Deponia is $1.99 on Steam this weekend. Been meaning to check this out for a while, so reckon I will.
Oh hey, someone actually read that! Looks like All 3 Deponia games are heavily discounted, though not as much for 2 and 3 (still 50%+ off though). I'm really tempted to nab the sequels, but on the one hand I'm kind of hoping for a slightly better deal, and on the other hand I'd also really prefer the GOG versions. 2 bucks for the first game is dirt cheap though.
Incidentally, I've just completed another point-and-click adventure that I purchased during the same sale I got Deponia in: The Book of Unwritten Tales. Once again I've finished it stylishly late, narrowly missing the (successful!) Kickstarter for a sequel. To try to keep it short, the game is pretty damn neat. It pays major homage to earlier adventure games as well as to well-known fantasy works such as LotR (it's set in a similar world). There are great references and a keen sense of humor accompanying them. If I had to choose the game's best feature, it's hands-down the voice acting. There's a rich variety of extremely colorful accents. Usually in these games, when I've finished reading a line of dialogue, I cut off the speaker to save time. In this game I just want to hear them talk. And the conversations are cleverly written, alongside an entertaining-enough story that subverts the usual cliché fantasy plot.
The puzzles are fine but the game suffers a bit from that adventure game plague that I can only describe as "goddamn it how the hell was I supposed to realize that pixel in the corner of my screen was clickable!?" It's not fun when instead of admiring the setting I'm literally combing the screen with my mouse for interactable objects. This isn't a problem in Deponia for instance, where you can hit the spacebar and see them all highlighted. No real complaints otherwise.
