I did find it really weird that Ace wasn't in the beginning of the story standing up for Luffy against those mountain bandits. Maybe at that point Oda hadn't decided to give Luffy a brother, though.

Why is it weird? Chapter 1 just shows how many three or four different days of Luffy´s childhood. I could tell you countless stories of my childhood that all don´t inlcude my older brother in it. I don´t see any problems there.

Exaclty. It would be extremley out of place if Ace didn't know Shanks. the Red -Hair Pirates have been using Luffy's hometown as a base for almost a year. And if luffy met him, it only logccal Ace would have had as well. In fact shanks could also have had been Ace's insparation for becoming a pirate.

Here's something for you: The guy with the glasses that was Shanks and Buggy's captain: Who was he? If he was a pirate captain to two legendary pirates, then he was probably someone very important. Part of his flag is also blocked off as to keep it in secrecy.
Personally, I think that the guy in glasses or someone in Whitebeard's crew was Luffy and Ace's father, possibly the very guy that Blackbeard killed. That would explain a lot of things, since Ace seems very adamant about finding Blackbeard and killing him. If you notice, Most of the D's are against killing (Save for Blackbeard). As far as we know, Ace and Roger have never killed anyone, Luffy has never killed anyone, and so far, Saul hasn't killed anyone. So for Ace to go out of his way to actually "Kill" someone must be warranted by a serious crime, above and beyond killing a simple nakama.
A question, because I never read the Jaya Arc completely: Did Luffy ever hear anyone say Blackbeard's real name? If Luffy had heard that his real name was Marshall D Teach, do you think it would have any impact on him? Maybe Marshall D Teach was Luffy's father, and Blackbeard killed him and assumed his name. I wouldn't put it past Oda-sensei.

**I do believe ths man will play a great role later on. I also once thought he could have had been Roger. But others say he wasn't. I only saw he anime of that part so maybe it is different.

Real-Life blackbeard's real name was Edward Teach. See the resemblence between Edward Newgate (OP Whitebeard) and Marshall D. Teach? now to figure out if there's any guy named Marshall Newgate, and if they have a D as a middle name.

There were no known pirates named Marshall Newgate (That I know of)
Here's my list of famous pirates and who Oda uses to represent them in One Piece:
1. Roronoa Zoro = Francois L'Lonois (Oda confirmed this one)
2. Bartholomew Kuma = Bartholomew Roberts, AKA Black Bart (Unconfirmed by Oda, but the name and his mannerisms are exactly like the famous pirate captain)
3. Red Haired Shanks = Calico Jack (Also Unconfirmed, But Shanks Flag is exactly like Calico Jack's was)
4. Alvida = Named after Alvida of the Viking Pirates, modeled after Anne Bonny (After eating the Sube Sube Fruit)
5. Edward Teach = Edward D. Newgate
6. Mihawk = Sir Francis Drake (Also unconfirmed, but Sir Francis was aka "The Hawk of the seas", and Drake sounds like Dracule, the other way to spell Mihawk's last name)That's all I can think of atm.

Anyway, I thought of another one:
Groggy = Edward Vernon, aka "Old Grog". He's the guy who invented Grog, after discovering that Rum held up better when mixed with Water. He wasn't a pirate, but actually a British Officer.
Another thing to note: Calico Jack, aka Jack Rackham, served under Captain Vane on the ship "Neptune". Neptune's Greek name is Poseidon.
I wonder if Oda knew this…

i believe it was myself who pointed that out long ago in the old forum before it crashed. it was back in the days when i was a lot like ivotas and posted lots of speculations and theories. it was just something along the lines of:
what if edward newgate is, like gold roger, actually EDWAR D. NEWGATE?
used to haunt me to sleep, now not so much anymore. i got tired of thinking and speculating about it and decided to just wait until oda reveals it further.

I got bored, so I did a little research.
Here's something neat:
Woodes Rogers was the first Governor of the Bahamas. Coincidentally, he was also one of the first men to Circumnavigate the globe (The real first was Magellan, of course). His Navigator was William Dampier (Read: Will of the D). During their voyage around the world, they picked up Alexander Selkirk, the very guy who two very famous books were modeled after (Robinson Carusoe and the Mysterious Island). Rogers was a very rich man that bribed and arrested pirates alike, and brought a lot of gold back to the British Crown. His nickname was… drumroll please... "Gold" Rogers.

Depends. What order is Whitebeard's name written in Japanese? I will assume Gold Roger was written as "Gold" and then "Roger" because of the nature of the split name "Gol", but I'm unsure of Whitebeard. I would assume this theory to be wrong on a consistency and plot basis; Roger is dead, so the Marines are free to change the history books regarding them in whatever manner they want. Whitebeard is alive, and whatever his motives may be, I don't seem him as a coward in any way, so why would he bother to hide his middle initial? The consistency argument is that "Edward" is a first name, not a last name (of which are much more unique), so I ask of the name order.

Oh, and Fire Fist Ace, here's something of note for you to consider...the meaning of the name "Roger" roughly equates to "skilled with a spear". Remove the "s" from skilled and we have a painting of Gold Roger's execution.

Yes, Roger does mean "Famous Spear" in German, but I don't think it's a physical spear that it's talking about. It's more what Zeff was talking about: The Spear of Will, the Spear of Blind Grit. Just after Zeff said this, Luffy smiled just like Roger, indicating that it was Luffy and Roger's dedication to never give up in spite of what anyone (Kaigun or otherwise) got in their way.
Here's something: the Spear of Destiny was the name of the spear that pierced the side of Jesus Christ during his crucifixion. The name William means "Protector" and "Spear" in Old English and Latin, respectively. Translate "Spear of Destiny" to "William of the D" or even "Will of the D".
I called it wrong, so long ago. I guess this needs to be changed.

The strongest implication, though, is that the executioners stabbed him with the spears they were holding. I cite this because Norland was executed in the same style; by all means, hangings should be the predominant execution method, but there are no gallows near the execution stands.

Roger is primarily a proper name of English and French usage which means "famous with the spear" from the Germanic elements hrod/"fame" and ger/"spear."
As for Luffy's dad. aparently his is not an importnant element in the story and IMO will not be mentioned anytime soon if ever.

now I'm not fluent in German but after wiki'ing it…. I'm not sure that 'Roger' means "famous spear". I think it comes from different elements of German.... hrod, meaning "fame" and ger which means "spear." Now like I said I'm not fluent so I could be wrong.

I remember it as if it was his grandmother. However Julian said that nobody ever knew who his grandfather was and he was thinking that it was really him who traveled back in time. Well, it´s been a couple of years so the memory might be mixed up.

For my money, you can't beat good old Next Generation.
That said, the new Battlestar Galactica is the best sci-fi series EVER and far outstrips any star treck series.
