Anyone notice this? In Chapter 77, when Genzo is telling the story of how Belle-Mere met Nami and Nojiko, there's a sign in the background that has a name on it, which I think is the name of the town. I can't make it out, except that the last word on it appears to be either "Gold" or "God". Maybe I'm putting too much into this, but do you think this a plot element? Nobody's mentioned an entire town being destroyed like that (In most cases, like Ohara and Gosa, it's utterly. It doesn't have both sides taking Casualties). Anyplace that could get marines AND civilians killed must have put up a serious fight…

Interesting…you know, the time COULD work out for belle-mere to be on Gold Roger's crew....or fought against it.
-
As of about eight years ago (the flashback), Bellemere says she's 30 "with the skin of a 19 year old due to tangerines".
That was ~14 years after Roger's death, no… so she'd have to have enlisted at 16, then been deployed against the top foe.

Nami was one year old when Bellemere found her. This means the battle took place about 17 years ago. Ergo, no Roger involved.

Anyone watching the new Battlestar Galactica? (if not, you should it's the best sci fi show ever.) Anywway, the whole point is that galactica was out training new crewmembers when all of a sudden it found itself ass deep in the enemy.
She wouldn't have to be deployed against him intentionally, see?
Again, I'm not saying it's gospel I'm saying it's worth considering. With Oda, you gotta look for every possible connection.

While it certainly could work out to be a very important element (and I hope it does given the mystery of Nami's parents) the one thing we should keep in mind is that this was in East Blue so consider what may be in the reigion that could have sparked such a battle, especially around the time Luffy was growing up there and the individuals that MAY have surrounded him.
Although the sign may not show us what we want, you've brought up a very good point!=)

It doesn't necessarily have to be East Blue. After all, Belle-Mere was a marine, and could've been deployed anywhere.
Something to note, too:
When Belle-mere finally reaches Cocoyashi and is holding Nami and Nojiko in her arms, she's wearing a coat with her arms out of the sleeves, much like an officer of the Kaigun does. This could mean that Belle-mere was a little more than your average soldier…
I need to find a blown up image of the picture to see if I can decipher the sign. But I'm guessing it's like what Patty's knife said in Volume 7, and intentionally made unreadable. Although Oda DID say what Patty's knife said in a Volume 9 SBS.

What did Patty's knife say?
-
"Fist of the North Star", According to Oda in an SBS.
-
It was the name of Oda's favorite manga when he was in his childhood as well.
