We love you Stephen.
Honestly, I almost didn't come on today cause there wasn't going to be a chapter. Glad I changed my mind!

And regarding the "predictable story" of this chapter: if you sit enough monkeys at a typewriter, one's eventually going to type up Shakespeare. It's no surprise with the amount of talking that goes on on this forum that eventually somebody would be right about something.
…what's a typewriter? XD

It should be plain that several pages of this are dedicated to "touching" material, but when viewed without words, it looks painfully like the Nami flashback. As many have said, and will continue to say, Oda better not disappoint after centering this arc around Robin's betrayal. As of yet, I'm not satisfied.
And finally, don't shoot the messenger. Just because I was among the first to complain doesn't mean I should get the brunt of these attacks. Afterall, I'm trying to keep my image as a straightman. :O
u're next to oda, stephen
i'm not a homo but i love u anyway

Oda's stories are meant to read, not just looked at. If I was looking for a story that centered around pretty pictures, I'd be browsing through an issue of Nakayoshi.
It's fine not to be satisfied yet, but don't declare your dissatisfaction before you've had a chance to even read the chapter. Though I'm assuming you have now.

Yup. Oda won me over again. =D
I should note, though, that something should be clarified; the "World Government" isn't a kingdome, it's an alliance of the enemies that destroyed the massive kingdome, and I didn't see Marieoja anywhere in the translation…

I'm not done my translation yet, but I didn't see Marieoja written in katakana anywhere in my preliminary breeze-through.
I'm really glad you liked it. Oda's broken my heart a million times in this flashback.
….
this chapter is awsome!!!!
i can almost see the ending of one piece now
i can see luffy leading an entire fleet of pirates against the WG
omfg
oda is god
nothing less
Oda does offer an interesting, and possible, connection to the Shounen formula. Perhaps this massive kingdome was ruled by a certain…"D" family?
@stephen's:
Robin: IT'S ME!!! ROBIN!!!
I'M A LOT BIGGER NOW… DO YOU REMEMBER ME?! I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU TO COME HOME!!!
Are you sure... you're not my mother?
I just hope... that someday
you'll walk with me and hold my hand...Robin: I studied as hard as I could...
And became an archaeologist!!! Now I can read Poneglyphs!!!Spandine: That KID?!
Clover: No...
Stop, Robin!!!Robin: Please, Mother,
let me be with you!!!Olvia: Robin...!!!
Robin: PLEASE...
DON'T LEAVE ME ALL ALONE!!!Phone: Commencing Buster Call!!!
Begin bombardment!
Our target is the entire island of Ohara, Land of Archaeology!!!
Wow.
Oda, you've broken my heart again.
That was a powerful chapter.
I'm so captivated by a stream of scarifices that appear to be in vain. Like Tom's sacrifice, when Franky got himself run over and labeled a criminal anyway. Olvia trying to protect Robin through denying being her mother, and now this.
Just wow.
I wish I had more coherent input, but I'm too blown away by the emotion in this chapter.

PS: My avatar and sig feel so wildly inappropriate just now XD
Goddamn, this is a REAL heart breaker.
But… you fools! Now the wait for 396 will be twice as long!
**People have probaley thought this up already, but..
I think that the "D's" might be survivers of this lost kingdom. Perhaps royalty? People that only now are starting to revolt against the desendents of the group of people that brought upon their ansestors doom. Of course the D's them sleves probaley don't know this, as over time they have probaley seperated to all over the world. This would explain why even though they were D's Blackbeard and luffy didn't know each other at all. I'm also thinking that the name of this past Kingdom is the same as to that the letter D stands for. And Gold Roger found out about this, and even to this day had supporters ready to perodiclly overthrow the WG. Fate would bring them all to eventually in some way or another to overthrow the WG.
Just a theory.**
damn. why did it have to be leaked. 2 weeks'll drive me nutz.
sad so very sad this chapter is. Robin definitely has the saddest past, no dobut about it. As for the name of the kingdom, we'll get that before OP is over

I hope the "D" family isn't royalty, but as I said earlier, this is probably going to be the most predominant theory around AP for a couple years. It explains why Roger understood the Poneglyph language, and WHY the WG changed his name from "Gol" to "Gold". If the "D" initial indicates connection to the kingdome, there's no confusion over how Saul has a "D"; his family could simply have been members of the kingdome.

**I'm not so sure if they were royalty, but I'm sure they were connected with the kingdom in some way.
Did the WG change his name? I thought it was a nickname, like "Strawhat" Luffy or " Fire fist" Ace.**
I'm glad I stayed up later than usual or else I wouldn't have seen the chapter. Anyways, I finished my script!
Thanks a lot Stephen. :adore: That chapter is really great once the text is understood. Those final pages were awesome. I really hope the anime doesn´t screw around with this one because with the proper audio visual production this could become one of my all time favorite One Piece scenes.
I was mostly expecting this type of explanation for the lost 100 yrs so it wasn't disappointing in any way! Been waiting for this for at least about a hundred chapters.
I second that. This is exactly what I constantly meant with the Vaterland-esque story type. So it´s not that new, however at now it is officially confirmed to be like that and it´s not utter speculation anymore.
And yet, Oda surely must have much more in store for us. If that would have been all of it then Clover almost had fullfilled what Robins dream is. I´m sure there´s still more to learn from the Poneglyphs.
wipes tears from eyes and blows nose
Darn you Oda, making me cry again.
That was indeed a powerful chapter. Emotional, heartbreaking, philosophically deep, and full of information that opens even more questions. And this is why I love One Piece. At first I thought it was just going to be nothing more than a little island-to-island treasure hunt story. I guess in a sense it still is, but it's become rather…epic.
Poor Robin-chan. =(
WOW
That was an awesome chapter.
It seems Clover figured the truth out.
I'm guessing the Ancient weapons belonged to the ancient Kingdom? If my understanding is correct?
I just can't wait to see the rest. The ancient History is really getting goood.
And another thing. If the tablets are unbreakable, that must mean they survived the Buster call?, And therefore the Government has them?
I wonder if anyone has read Guy Gavriel Kay's Tigana before? The idea of this lost kingdom being ruled/populated/starting with the letter 'D' reminds me a lot of the central concept of that book, which I love a whole lot, so I find that entire idea kind of exciting.
For those who don't care about spoiling it, the plot of Tigana revolves around a land of nine provinces which is invaded by some tyrant kings. The provinces are all subdued rather quickly except for one particularly fierce and proud land. One of the invading kings' sons is killed in a battle against the province, and in revenge the king casts a spell that erases the name of it from the memory of all in the land, and it is renamed "Lower Corte" after the adjacent Corte province. Now it is the lowest and most miserable of all nine until a group of people get together and kill the king, undo the curse and restore the name of "Tigana" to the minds of all its people again. That was a pretty lame summary but I could see the similarities if the One Piece kingdom's name started with a "D," and the name "D" that so many characters share was all that remained of it.
@Lighting-Ace:
And another thing. If the tablets are unbreakable, that must mean they survived the Buster call?, And therefore the Government has them?
**Yep. The WG are probaley destroying as much evidence of the 100 blank years as possible. And since you can't destroy the Ponyglyphs, the WG most likley has them stashed somewhere.
Does this mean that Cobras ansestors were in leauge with the kingdom even after the WG took over? Or that the WG themselves put them there for safe keeping.**
@Octogon:
**I'm not so sure if they were royalty, but I'm sure they were connected with the kingdom in some way.
Did the WG change his name? I thought it was a nickname, like "Strawhat" Luffy or " Fire fist" Ace.**
Gold Roger's nickname was "Pirate King". After he was executed, his nickname and treasure were romanticized and became something grander than they were when he was alive. I made a note of this earlier in the year by explaining 4Kids/Viz translation.
"Pirate King" Roger.
"Strawhat" Luffy.
"Strawhat" Luffy, King of Pirates.
Note how the third indicates a nickname and a title. This is ambiguous in the original Japanese, as Pirate King is always used, never KOP or KOtP.
I second that. This is exactly what I constantly meant with the Vaterland-esque story type. So it´s not that new, however at now it is officially confirmed to be like that and it´s not utter speculation anymore.

You may need to clarify the Vaterland story. I'm making connections to Sailor Moon here, what with the old kingdome and a surviving enemy.
BTW, just a small question…could the guy on the first page looking at the Poneglyphs be a young Corgi by any chance? Looks kind of like it, but I guess a lot of those random WG officials look alike.
And thanks for the translations!
@Lighting-Ace:
I'm guessing the Ancient weapons belonged to the ancient Kingdom? If my understanding is correct?
I don´t know, but wouldn´t they have won against their enemies if it would be theirs? Maybe they lost to them and only a small group of people fought hard to hide them when the war was over and lost already (please don´t ask me how that would be possible it´s just a rough idea). That could be one explenation why it is called power to destroy the world. The ancient kingdom could possibly have fallen to them.
Or the ancient kingdom really built them but it was already to late to have any effect so for future generations there´s still the info where they lie.
What do I know? I´m just trying to come up with something constructive.
And another thing. If the tablets are unbreakable, that must mean they survived the Buster call?, And therefore the Government has them?
That´s what I was thinking too. It could be possible that the Poneglyph "survived" the attack.
And regarding the "predictable story" of this chapter: if you sit enough monkeys at a typewriter, one's eventually going to type up Shakespeare. It's no surprise with the amount of talking that goes on on this forum that eventually somebody would be right about something.
QFT.
We have what 50 something readers sitting and sicussing something in depth and coming up with 50,000 different theories, and suddenly if one of them clicks, we have a lame and predictable storyline =\
People this isnt Naruto.
I for one sure didnt see that coming.
One Piece = ruins of the old kingdom
QFT.
You shouldn't. I tried to be funny, but that's actually a classical example of an impossibility, a joke among staticians. In the science world, we use the example of "Trying to reach Absolute Zero, eh"?
That´s what I was thinking too. It could be possible that the Poneglyph "survived" the attack.
No, they did not. Ancients of the west usually say things are "engraved in stone" as a metaphor for immutability. In the East, particularly China, stone is substituted with Jade. Obviously, stone can be destroyed; Clover was just saying the knowledge was so important, the ancient kingdome made an attempt to preserve it over a long period of time, expecting they wouldn't be around to continuously scribe on paper.
You may need to clarify the Vaterland story. I'm making connections to Sailor Moon here, what with the old kingdome and a surviving enemy.
I´ll redirect you to this page. It features a very brief info what the movie is about but I think it explains it pretty well.
In short words, the similarities I´ve seen with this movie and expected to see with the true history is the moment of "History is written by winners (no matter if they were the good or evil ones)".
If there´s still something you might like to know about the movie feel free to ask. It was years since I´ve last seen it but I think I should be able to help out none the less.
@fy3:
One Piece = ruins of the old kingdom
Or
Raftel = ruins of what we saw on page
No, they did not.
How can you know that? If you think that they possibly didn´t survive then it´s ok for you but "no, they did not" sounds like you had a little chit chat with Oda and he already confirmed that the Poneglyph didn´t survive.
…thats so sad. Now that I know the true awsomenes of this chapter...I have to wipe away a few tears. God damn Robin's aunt sucks
You shouldn't. I tried to be funny, but that's actually a classical example of an impossibility, a joke among staticians. In the science world, we use the example of "Trying to reach Absolute Zero, eh"?
@Wikipedia.com:
After about 1970, popular statements of the monkey image draw upon infinity, saying that an infinite number of monkeys typing for an infinite amount of time will produce a given text. […] A single immortal monkey who executes infinitely many keystrokes will almost surely eventually type out any given text, and an infinite number of monkeys will almost surely begin producing all possible texts immediately, with no wait. In fact, in both cases, the text will almost surely be produced an infinite number of times.
That's the context I used the quote in. WarcoW perfectly conveyed what I was trying to express. Let's not get into technicalities about the quote I used, and get back to discussing One Piece. Surely you have something better to do than nitpick my word choice.
How can you know that? If you think that they possibly didn´t survive then it´s ok for you but "no, they did not" sounds like you had a little chit chat with Oda and he already confirmed that the Poneglyph didn´t survive.
Let's quote this chapter right now: "Not even an explosion will put a scratch on it." Many explosions = scratch? I'm guessing not.
It's no surprise with the amount of talking that goes on on this forum that eventually somebody would be right about something.
Actually, I wasn't even basing that on anything on the forum. I think it's obvious that the World Govt. are trying to:
A. Cover up the existence of the weapons by any means.
B. At the same time, get a hold of them by doing whatever is deemed necessary.
Now, who the weapons originally belonged to is up for discussion but I guess I just always figured they were the ones trying to cover things up and they are ultimately the 'enemy' of OP or at least one of them….it's important to remember, everyone has a reason for what they're doing and even the villains, if they're worth their salt as villains, have a specific reason and aim and MAY be redeemable.
The whole being a giant country and changing their name thing....obviously it's not easy to pull out precisely that idea but let's just say, I think there were a few of us not left with our jaws on the floor.
Oda's obviously saving that for the next few chapters and I can't wait

I think that was made obvious by the way CP9 seized Robin (who could read the poneglyphs, which scribed the locations of the ancient weapons) and Franky (who knew the location of Pluton). It really wasn't a surprise for me, either. :X Or anyone that's read One Piece, for that matter.
I can't wait for the next chapter, too. I've expected so much out of this flashback, and while I haven't been completely satiated, I'm sure Oda will make sure I'm satisfied by the end of this story.
How can you know that? If you think that they possibly didn´t survive then it´s ok for you but "no, they did not" sounds like you had a little chit chat with Oda and he already confirmed that the Poneglyph didn´t survive.
Hey, hey, that post was my opinion. Would it have made you feel better if I said "Now, I'm not so sure…" or "Well..."? In the end, I would have offerred a complete contrast to what you discussing earlier. However, if harm was done, I apologize.
What a cool Chapter
Poor Robin
Can't wait for next chapter whenever that is
I'm of the opinion that the name of the country which was defeated is rather blatantly related with the will of D.
I also wonder, if the will of D country - as I'm calling it since it's as yet unnamed - really did possess the ultimate weapons as we assume, since they are the ones that made records about them, how did the World Government defeat them?
Perhaps the World Government had the weapons and the will of D country found a way to disable them, but it cost them the war and most of their lives to do so, and they made records about the world government's ships on those poneglyphs in the event of the WG re-attaining them.

You know, its not only how Oda creates the story, its also how he brings it out. I remember reading about the Vaterland theory you brought out when i used to troll around here, and at that moment it did seem very very plausible.
And the story is indeed going that way, but then again this just brings out more and more questions.
As to who the Alliance really where? Why did they destroy the Kindom? etc.. etc..
People might have predicted this a while back, but that in now way makes it uninteresting, it only adds to the hype.
And did anyone else realise that we were this close to having what 'D' rally stood for?
And did anyone else realise that we were this close to having what 'D' rally stood for?
Yep. I stated that as well in my theory after I read the chapter.
I'm of the opinion that the name of the country which was defeated is rather blatantly related with the will of D.

Aye, I agree. The assumptions as of late are that the Gorousei and the World Government are "evil", but who is to say? I could easily see them as recognizing the Ancient Weapons as a danger to society, and thus putting them into dormancy, but what would be a better way to defeat the descendants of their old enemy with the old weapons?
You shouldn't. I tried to be funny, but that's actually a classical example of an impossibility, a joke among staticians. In the science world, we use the example of "Trying to reach Absolute Zero, eh"?
I usually dont read the names of the posters when i go through a thread, and i saw a couple that said it was boring because of its predictability (or something to that extent).
And obviously it couldnt be taken as a case of impossibility when, the theory had been established already =)
But, since you said it in jest, ill play along and
Was a good chapter, Im in a good mood. One Piece just got shit loads more interesting for me. There really shouldnt be any question as to why it mops the floor with other Shonen Titles <3

But is keeping these weapons secret the best way of dealing with the problem? If someone reawakens the weapons, then there are many that won't have any way to defend against it. At least if people are aware of its existance, they can prepare and research a defense against the weapons.
Of course, they can also try to find and seize the weapons for themselves, as well.
A question for everyone:
Would it be better to keep the weapons a secret, or would it be better to share the information with everyone so they can be prepared for an attack from the weapons?
Great chapter. I'm guessing that the Kingdom has to do with why Dragon is such a threat to the World Government.
Hey, hey, that post was my opinion. Would it have made you feel better if I said "Now, I'm not so sure…" or "Well..."? In the end, I would have offerred a complete contrast to what you discussing earlier. However, if harm was done, I apologize.
As I said in the post you quoted, I´m perfectly fine with different opinions if they are labeled as opinions. I was merely adressing that your post was lacking the subjective "In my opinion…" or "By my book..." component. That´s all. I didn´t felt offended by it.
People might have predicted this a while back, but that in now way makes it uninteresting, it only adds to the hype.
I agree. It definitely adds to the hype. It doesn´t matter if a prediction gets proven right or wrong, I just completely love it when something get´s officially established. I´m always excited when Oda does that!
And did anyone else realise that we were this close to having what 'D' rally stood for?
Nah, I think that the mystery of the D will remain for a far long time. I take it as too important to be revealed now. I can see it happening that the D. people can be linked to the ancient kingdom, but to me giving away their name is as if the entire true history would be revealed already. That would be too soon.
Great chapter. I'm guessing that the Kingdom has to do with why Dragon is such a threat to the World Government.
Yep, that "his ideal are dangerous to the world" statement came immediately to my mind after I read the trans. This Dragon dude surely is one mystery for himself.
Would it be better to keep the weapons a secret, or would it be better to share the information with everyone so they can be prepared for an attack from the weapons?
The former more. It has been eight hundred years since the "lost one hundred", and there have been no revivals of the Ancient Weapons. Only a few even know what they are.
If the latter were predominant, I could easily see the various pirates of the realm deviating from One Piece and seeking out the ancient weapons; Roger's treasure is huge, aye, but in comparison to the rest of the treasure in the world? Perhaps infinate pleasure (pirates are pleasure seekers above all else) if the world is conquered? The government recognizes that the Marines are not enough to take down the Great Pirate Age, so the weapons are necessary to combat it; imagine if the pirates, already tough as they are, were to obtain even more power.
That would depend. Is it safe for the government out information for the weapons so the people would be prepared and having the knowledge that extremists would begins searching the world for them, like Crocodile?
I'm not sure if this is true or not, but I remember hearing that Gold Roger gave himself up. If that's true, why would someone who knows his heritege give himself up to the "enemy"?
Great chapter. I'm guessing that the Kingdom has to do with why Dragon is such a threat to the World Government.
I don't know if that was already said in another thread, but what if Luffy, Ace and Teach could read the poneglyphs, as if it was a gift or something like that. That could explain why Dragon is interested by Luffy.
In any case, awesome chapter, sad and rich in revelations. And thanks for the translation Stephen.
Nah, I think that the mystery of the D will remain for a far long time. I take it as too important to be revealed now. **I agree that it would be too soon if what the "D" stands for is already revealed. but I do believe that the name of the kingdom is or is directly connected to what "D" is. I also believe the WG know some if not all of "D", which is why they killed him the. So that not even CP9 would know the name of this Kingdom. Or it could be that they don't know but don't want anyone else to know all the same.
Either way the Kingdoms name seems to be a "key". With tis name you can understand somethings others ( even those who can read the ponyglyphs ) don't know. And perhaps the seceret to taking down the WG.**

Of course its gonna be kept a secret.
But that doesnt mean Oda wont torture us by almost having one of his characters reveal it. I too agree that the true meaning of 'D' would probably only be revealed at the end.
He leaves us small bits and pieces that we try very hard to put together. But we love it =)
And now we have the explanation as to how the Marines found out that Robin could read Poneglyphs. She is one smart girl. She recognised her mother after all those years, and it wasnt even instant recognition. So natural. So touching.
EDIT - Also this got me thinking about the other pirates in the Grand Line.
What if Shanks and Whitebeard actually know what Gold Roger had left in the Grand Line. Could be a reason why the marines fear the two men meeting up.
Also what if Gold Roger told Whitebeard evberything he knew about the lost 100 years (if he even knew it) and whatever shit it is the Gororsei are trying to keep a secret. It could also be the reason Whitebeard has a 'D' as his right hand man.
But suppose both the government and the people knew and had control of these weapons. In theory, the forces would cancel one another out; just as America and USSR continued to buildup missiles during the cold war, neither attacked because they knew the power the other had.
If both groups knew of and had the weapons, there'd be no concern that one would surpress the others with their weaponry (as it looks as though the World Government might).
Of course, I can understand why it'd be a good idea to keep it quiet, too.
Hmm… but the information came from poneglyphs, and since they were scattered across the world, eventually, the blank 100 years would be found out, even if the Rio Poneglyph were controlled by the WG.
Also, can I get confirmation if hearing that Gold Roger turning himself into the World Government was a rumor or not?
