Speculation on what Viz may do

Since One Piece is such a long series, is still going on without any signs of stopping in Japan, and Viz graphic novel realeases are still way too slow (even after they changed the realease dates from every 4 months to every 3 months), I have a feeling that Viz will soon pull One Piece from the Shonen Jump magazine and make One Piece a GN only series from there on in.

Viz did do it for 2 of their other series. They took the Boo saga of DBZ out of the magazine and made it a GN only series because EVERYONE has seen DBZ on TV already, the same thing for Yugioh, everyone had seen the Duelist Kingdom and Battle City arcs, so it didn't really make sense to have it in the magazine with 2-3 chapters realeased a month.

I just have this feeling that after Viz finishes up the Arlong arc and Louge Town and the Straw Hats finally enter the Grand Line, that One Piece will be pulled from the magazine and realeased either monthly or bi-monthly in GN form starting with volume 13 or so. American fans that don't download manga or episodes have already been given a rather shitty preview of what the Grand Line brings (through the atrocity that is the 4Kids dub) and since One Piece is a 39 volume+ series, it's clear that one GN realease every 3 months isn't enough.

I just have some weird feeling that Viz will do just that.

The first edit will be Zoro's wanted poster. Since they call him Zolo, I've wondered how they will do the wanted poster. Then I heard they edit other manga so I they may edit this. Though it may be a horrible photoshop since Zoro's wanted poster is in English.

I would hardly worry about a small little letter on a small little wanted poster being changed.

The Viz translation is pretty damn good. The only real problem I have with it is the use of corny language like 'curses' and 'dang it' in the place of swearing and the pirate lingo like 'aye aye' and 'matey'.

I can easily overlook the extremely small name changes, like Zolo, Django, and Coco Village. Although, Merry Go does kinda bother me a little.

As for that possibilty…..
It would make me feel a tad foolish for buying all the tankoban. But otherwise I think it could easily happend.

Anyway, I'm learning how to read japanese (for a plethora of reasons) and coming along pretty well (considering I'm self teaching) and hopefully, soon, I'll be living off the japanese manga and not caring about what Viz does. That said, I wouldn't mind at all OP becoming a GN only series, we could get our hands on it faster.

DarkShinobi, I've been thinking the same sort of thing. My prediction is that they'll finish up Lougetown (Which is most likely gonna have the "L" changed to an "R") and then probably release the series in graphic novels under a subtitle similar to the method of "Yu-Gi-Oh!:Duelist".

And I'm thinking it would be something along the lines of "One Piece: The Grand Line" or something like that. Oh, and not to mention the "contains the original storyline and scenes too startling for TV!" caption XD.

Actually, assuming that they're gonna do monthly releases of the GNs if they go that route, thats not really a bad idea.

Who can say?

For a while there, they were keeping the dialogue relatively tame, but the last issue was a bit more daring than some of the earlier ones as Kuwabara actually fired off a "bastards" at one point.

When Viz did the Red Ribbon Army Saga in Dragon Ball, they left in many of the references to Blue being gay, but they may try to skirt the issue more in Shonen Jump.

Of course, they could always just call him a Transvestite.

meh, i stopped buying the viz graphic novels…. especially after i found out where to get the manga online.... i'll probably get the japanese mangas when i go to japan... just cuz i love looking through them, they are so pretty ^^ and of course, i love the small size of the japanese mangas....

yeah, merry go sounded weird to me too... and of course i try to ignore the Zolo and still read it as Zoro.... it makes me cry on the inside X3

Viz most likely will leave the Mr. 2 being gay thing alone.

But I bet Okama Kenpo will become Crossdresser Kenpo or something like that. Viz doesn't really keep Japanese terms in One Piece.

If they call him Captain Chaser, I'm not buying a single issue more.

I'm amazed they aren't furious that 4kids has "scooped" their product… and dragged its reputation through the mud. They should be looking for a way to recover its good name. Perhaps "The Uncensored Story" logos on the volumes.

I wish they'd reformat ASJ:

-Kill off YYH or YGO (I dislike both of them), or possibly HnG (I can't see it being a huge favourite, no matter how well drawn it is), and run a chapter of Bo-Bobo in its place, plus a one-shot or a cyclical preview of their other properties. Or even move Death Note in. IMO, Bo-Bobo's weirdness makes it most suitable for small doses, not whole volumes.

-Disconnect the ASJ publication with the volume publication. I'm not sure the market overlap is that great. A volume is no good if you like the six-series format of ASJ, and ASJ is expensive and unrewarding if all you want is one series.

-Sell subscriptions to long-running series. I could quite readily see subscribing to monthly OP tankos at $50 a year or so.

-Avoid the smarmy ads at the bottom of the pages. It's not cute playing into the plot above, it's offensive at times

Aside: Does anyone have ASJ 36 (12/2005)? How many chapters does it have... does it have a colour spread or pull out poster or anything else OP worth having?

Yeah past viz releases have left in gay characters so i don't see any harm in letting mr.2 be gay but we won't know that till the year 2012 unless they speed it up

If Chaser was merely a massive tobacco edit, it shouldn't carry onto the manga (Sanji's lollies don't).

But if it's going to be "we invested in the name, we're gonna stick with it across the board, it will (Zolo)

Again, it depends on the name that Shueisha decides to trademark.

If they choose Chaser to capitalize on the anime, then Viz will use Chaser.

If it's changed to Chaser (no matter WHO changes it) I'm cancelling my subscription and boycotting tankos. That's just too much.

I hope they release it monthly; they did it with Kenshin, right? The reason I got my first non-Viz One Piece was because they were at the Baratie arc and I was going insane to see what would happen. I can't imagine having to wait so stinkin' long for the conclusion of the Arlong arc… not to mention the other, like, 30 volumes o.o.

Apart from cussing and possibly Mr. 2, I don't see them changing much. Though a few things got on my nerves- "I'll pay you by body" was changed to "I'll pay you with kisses!", and plys the whole 'little servant' thing. But I guess I'm being nitpicky.

well the best way to look at American translated manga is to just grin and bear it. Or you could just learn Japanese (if you really invest the time into it)

Well, part of the problem is that die hard fans often yell at stuff the translators have to do to sell to a wider audience. I don't see those things as "problems."

I'm likely to be pretty pissed if it's "Chaser," but I don't think Viz would do that to us. Considering, they've been really good and the new people in charge are a lot less stringent even (bastard showing up last issue, for example) so we'll have to see

That is true. They've kept all the original names (e.g. Horohoro, Ryu and Ren) and with the exception of calling Furyoku Manga, have used the original terms (i.e. Oversoul instead of Spirit Control). Yes they did change Ponchi’s testicles to a stomach, but quite frankly I’d rather see him attack Manta with a stomach than his testicles. Anyway, I have however heard that the different series are handled by different groups.

As for using original Japanese terms, they used Kenpai in Shaman King and have the characters say san and chan in Kenshin so they may consider called Mr. 2 Okama, especially seeing as how it's a way to get around using the word gay.

However I too would strongly consider boycotting the series if Viz use the names Chaser/Captain Chaser, Grand Compass and Eternal Compass. Suposedly Viz is meant to be doing an exact (or as close as possible) translation of the series and those names aren’t proper translations. “Navy” is a grey area as some sources have mentioned it’s as accurate a translation as Marine. Zoro to Zolo and Pirate King to King of the Pirates make sense due to the fact people can get sued for using identical or similar names (I think a hockey team sued the people behind Spawn because a poster in one issue of Spawn featuring a word or name similar to the team’s name. The hockey team won). And I would understand if they want to change the names of the female Baroque Works named after Japanese holidays, though I would prefer Miss Merry Christmas (for example, though I don't see why 4Kids changed it) to Miss Groundhogs Day.

Anyway back to the topic. I would be very happy to see Viz drop Naruto, Shaman King and One Piece and make them monthly or bimonthly. I remember once a member calculating that it would take Viz roughly fifteen years to publish the 39th One Piece graphic novel, by which point anime and manga may have taken a “back bench” in my life. I would like to have read all or most of those series by then (Bleach and YuYu aren't to bad as Bleach is published bimonthly and there's only 19 graphic novels for YuYu).

Yeah, mabe that is going a bit to far . Frankly I want Viz to keep the changes to the minimal. I enjoy reading it in English, but I'd like it to be as accurate as possible, only doing changes if they're really necessary. In all honesty, even if Viz used those and perhaps even Chaser, I'd probably still buy it. I won't like it but I'll buy it because I love the series to much to not.

I'm tempted but can't read Japanese and don't have the time to learn it. I know of the translations but it means I have to print out a large amount of paper just to read each book, or write the translations on the books. I'm not very keen on either idea.

Just save them as a TXT file. That's what I did for the ones I got.

Perhaps, but I like to read manga anywhere, especally in bed or infront the TV if I'm waiting for a show to come on and/or during adverts. Infact I rarely read manga infront my comp. But buying the tankos is something I might do if I had the money.

If I'm not mistaken, Navy is how the organization is consistently referred to in the text despite the accompanying images. So a direct translation of the text will use Navy.

I've covered Zolo enough. As far as shifting Pirate King to King of the Pirates goes, that's more likely an editorial choice. It still means the exact same thing.

Actually, Todd McFarlane based a Spawn character on retired hockey player Anthony Twist, who sued McFarlane for defamation of character and was awarded $25 million in what was a laughably bad judgement. So bad in fact that the judge tossed it as did an appeals judge.

It is temping to do that. However for me personally, learning a second language has always been a problem for me. Despite having French classes for about five years, I didn't get a good grasp of it. Plus I don't have the time and/or money to invest in such a system now. Perhaps in a year or two though.

I always thought Viz would do this for not only One Piece but every series that's in ASJ after the Yu-Gi-Oh! thing. Here's how I think it will play out:

One Piece will go to Arabasta or Skypiea after Arlong Park or Logue Town.
As soon as Viz (anime) exceeds the manga (houldn't take long) Naruto will go to wherever the anime hasn't reached yet (probably the time skip)
Yu Yu Hakusho will… keep going I guess.
Hikaru no Go. Well I don't have any knowledge of the series past ASJ so...
Shaman will go to wherever the filler in the anime (the fight at Patch Village I believe) started as soon the manga wraps up the part that they're in.

There's no way sports or game manga outside of Yu-Gi-Oh will fare well outside of Japan. If Viz does something dumb like attempt to force Hikaru no Go or Prince of Tennis into mainstream, they'll both tank.

I like HnG for the art only. The concept is too far out of range to be remotely saleable.

Part of what people like about sports and games is the unpredictability; although I've heard Eyeshield 21 is very good, knowing that there's a master writer who knows how the matches will come out takes the spice out of it.

I'm always a little iffy about any anime/manga where a specific sport is the craze everywhere you go, such as Yu-Gi-Oh! (anime more than manga, to be fair). It hurts-to-kills the suspension of belief.

I honestly think that its it will do pretty well. I mean, sure its not gonna have the same kinda prescense of mainstream anime like DBZ, Fullmetal Alchemist, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc. but I think it'll have some decent success.
