Chapter 1079: The Emperor's Crew, the Red-Haired Pirates
-
"What goes around comes around" is probably the best answer to the debate that filled up the spoiler thread. Nicely translated.
This was a pretty great chapter to a Shanks fan, thx Oda.
-
"What the Giant Pirates did 100 years ago offscreen is 100% comparable narratively to Kid pulling a railgun one people who can't really defend themselves" and other fun ideas from the Arlong Park Spoiler Forum.
-
Still stunning to think that this is the big payoff of the Supernovas. I won't complain if this is how Kid/d and Killer's stories conclude, but man, did almost nobody see it coming.
Still giving us some amazing reactions throughout the entire internet, though. Weird to think it's been 7 months since the last audience upset in Yamato staying/Born To Burn.
-
You know, Urouge is still MIA...
-
Since York knew that the WG is about to erase her but still think that she's gonna be a Celestial Dragon, then I guess the her mind might take over Saturn's body after all like someone suggested.
-
Knowing how defeat works in OP, luffy having the biggest ones, eustass crew can recover and still achieve something, assuming oda has plans for them and he didn't use them as some cheap plot device so shanks can get his hands on 3/4 poneglyphs copies.

@Kaiolino I'm so glad Kingdom Hearts isn't listed.
-
Shanks' attack Devine Departure is written as 神避 (Kamusari) in the Japanese chapter, which means death of god. It's based on the ancient JP records called Kojiki written1300 years ago. I wonder what Oda is implying with this.
-
@Kaiolino The fuck do Death Note fans have left to complain about in the year of our lord 2023, is it new fans getting past the point where L died and realizing that the whole thing was held on his shoulders.
-
Please don't kill our unconcious captain.
Stay classy Shanksu.
-
@Kaiolino
Wonder where those statistics got gathered from.Anyone know how Death Note is so high despite the show being over for more than a decade? Also what's the story with the Vikings, Suns and Grizzlies? Where is Naruto on this whole list, and why is MHA not above Titan when Bakugo and Endeavor both exist?

I assume it has to do with "Light was right" debates.
-
@Kaiolino I'm honestly surprised there's no sign of Pokemon anywhere.
-
@King-Cannon Maybe the compiler couldn't decide if they counted as videogame or anime.
-
I know I'm in the minority, but, personally, I'm rather disappointed in Ch 1079. As I'm invested in the Egghead story, having only 2 pages (plus one of hype) about it was underwhelming.
Shanks has nothing but hype scenes ever since the story began. And Kid's end was lackluster.
-
So either eustass has 4 poneglyphs copies or he only has 2 and 2 are the translated versions by Robin.
-
With the RHP being the only Emperor crew I have zero interest on, current and formers, I was definitely surprised how their fleet ended up being the most interesting of them all.
I was half expecting the two people holding Shanks on chapter 1076 to gain some relevant and maybe end up being traitors simply because of how weirdly "ugly" they looked compared to Oda usual background designs, but now it all made sense. Now I am suddenly interested in seeing more of Shanks and his group.
-
Really dislike how overpowered Shanks seems to be, Big Mom and Kaido look like trash compared to him. I'm team Blackbeard/team Imu. Kill Shanks before he can ruin even more characters.

I disagree. Many long time One Piece fans assume Shanks is super badass and powerful because of a ton of subtext and hinting, yes, but that's not a physical example.
Shanks wrecking Kidd here is a sign that he's most likely stronger than Big Mom and Kaido. No subtext, no implications, just simple physical proof carved into Kidd's unconscious body. The series is ending, so a scene like this definitely serves a purpose.
But yeah I wish we'd stop leaving the main story. It's not as bad as it has been with Egghead, but it's a huge weakness in One Piece's storytelling since entering the New World. In Wano it was just infuriating.
-
Big Mom took both Law and Kid to beat her and she was already worn out from all the other bullshit that happened to her on Wano.
It took Luffy three tries to beat Kaidou, and he only managed it by accidentally tapping into his fruit's full power.
We're seeing Shanks just utterly obliterate a single person who was already characterized as frequently biting off more than he can chew, and Shanks previously fought off Kaidou back during Marineford.
I genuinely have no idea what people want at this point when it comes to endgame players.
-
I am a Big Mom fan, so I obviously have my bias, but I want to believe what we saw in this chapter is not Oda saying "Shanks >>>>> other Emperors", but simply "just because these guys defeated Emperors before it doesn't mean they have cleared that level. THIS is what an Emperor looks like when they are seriously trying to take you down".
Let's not forget that Ikoku seems to be Big Mom main offensive attack and Oda never allowed her to land that on anyone. Every time she used it, the targets dodged (the closest he got to a hit was on chapter 1030, but it doesn't seem like it clearly landed on Kid).Regardless of powerscaling, though, I agree that now Shanks is going to become an active character instead of just a plot device, he needs some factual scenes that back what so far has been just hype. So scenes like this are needed - even more if Oda plans to have someone take him down as many have been expecting for years.

I'm not sure what you mean by "main story". Oda is merely advancing the plot without resorting to the period between arcs to do so.
Wano was so big it needed two breaks in order to advance the outside storyline, because otherwise the main story becomes hostage to local conflicts and plots. Just look at all the shit that was skipped because Wano needed to end in a specific spot after 150 chapters.
I expect this to be the new norm really.

The thing is that Law was able to inflict some damage on Blackbeard and his crew, so the framing is definitely not equal. Blackbeard currently needs 3 of his main officers + himself to take on Law's 21-man crew while Shanks only acted by himself.
Shanks is clearly above the other Emperors.
-
The question is why the world still sees mihawk as the best swordman and not shanks. Even more when they have a history of famous duels.
Don't tell me because those idiots from
marines think that mihawk cut shanks arm instead of Seaking. -
Forget Death Note, I want to know what the hell is up with Animal Crossing. Is this this about whether Tom Nook is a crooked loan shark or not?

Teach is a terrible example. Just like Luffy, he is a character that is getting stronger as the story progresses. We have no idea if current Teach is already at the level Oda wants him to be by the end.
Shanks, Linlin and Kaido (and previously Newgate) are not characters who are still getting stronger. -

It's weird to say Teach still has room to grow while Shanks hit his ceiling already.
-
So the giants were acting under orders, I'm back in the "Shanks is a jerk" camp.
Gotta love his gang of wacky hangers-on though.
-
I think BB ship is there to kidnapped Robin. I assume by this time they know that the Triclops is useless. The weird feeling is that they are probably gonna succeed in kidnapping. I’m gonna hate that storyline if it happens.

It is how both characters are, though.
Whether Teach already got at his "final level" we don't know, but is not arguable that he is continuously getting stronger as the story progresses. Meanwhile Shanks (similar to other already established pillars of the OP-world like Kaido and Big Mom) was never depicted as someone who is still growing. You may find it weird, but that doesn't change what it is.

The Great 'Is Shanks a Horrible Man' Debate rages on!
The Sanctimonious Moral Scolds seem to still think 'YES'
Semi-Sociopaths on the other hand are still leaning towards 'what? no.' camp. (we are right. screw you)
Everyone else is getting kinda bored at the discussion!

Official translation used "poneglyphs" today instead of the usual "ponegliffs".
-
With Shanks being portrayed as this undefeatable "Big Good" keeping the world stable as far as he can, caring for his men and so on, it only reinforces the notion that he's going to fall to someone.
After this chapter, I'm back to thinking Blackbeard will off Shanks.
But I wouldn't be surprised if someone else does the deed.
A very unexpected twist would be if Cross Guild does it. Shanks vs Mihawk dispute is resolved once and for all, and Buggy of all people gets the credit and the joy of seeing his old rival fall.
-
The young fanbase will probably be deleted by this chapter. As I'm not young anymore, I'm happy to see Shanks in action but wouldn't have mind if it was more subtile.
I know that the power ranking debate rages but Oda seem to have set the bar very high and it will be difficult to lower it.
Poor Luffy strugling with Seraphims...Anyway the first part was short but more interesting. York has a place she doesn't want destroyed and a Blackbeard boat is approching. Eggehead sure is the place to be :-)

That could potentially team Robin and Law back up again, if it turns out that he’s also being held hostage on Blackbeard’s ship. Building more on that relationship would be interesting, and could make Robin’s escape a little more palatable a storyline.

How the Throne War is going:
You reminded me: where the heck is Uroge? The man has the lowest bounty and no real onscreen successes yet he's being saved for longer than any other of the Worst Generation. It's so mysterious. On top of it, can he really be relevant after all we've seen in Wano? That's an answer I'm waiting to see.
-
@onemoment He was the first to defeat an Emperor commander, he has that going for him.
A lot of people expect him to be the 10th Titanic Captain. I kinda like the idea, but after Burgess' DF reveal, it feels like Urouge's power, at least as far as we've seen it, seems redundant.
Edit: I've edited the image in the OP, now including a sneaky Crocodile, and a blue symbol for non-contenders that aligned under someone else.

I'm curious on how One Punch Man is so high in that list. It's a parody manga. What do people even get negative about?

I could imagine that it is mostly down to activity and a propensity for back and forths. Probably much the same as here. Dude X has an opinion, dude Y feels that opinion is hella wrong, dude X and dude Y plus all the other dudes backing team X/Y talk past each other for a while and voila you have a lot of "negative" words which are mostly drawn from people wanting to convince other people.

Man, I feel bad for the Kid Pirates. Oda did everything here to make Shanks look like a goody-goody superhero and gave us a reminder that Kid is actually a villain who doesn't hesitate to completely slaughter Shanks' weakling fleet of punny pirates.
But Kid and Killer were a big part of Wano and characters I sympathized with throughout. Their story in Udon was great, just like their fights in Onigashima and there aren't many positive feelings I have for the latter mess. Their crew getting mercilessly wrecked like this feels like overkill to me.
Just give me a page in which you see that some time has passed, Shanks is bloodied up a little bit after some fighting. THEN the loser fleet appears and Kid gets ready to massacre them, Shanks gets super pissed and destroys him. I would have been totally fine with that.
-
@Dragon-D-Luffy Maybe it's because of webcomic fans clashing with fans of the Murata version
