Do you guys think we’ll get a sad backstory for Bonney/Kuma?

I figure as much once Bonney actually abandons her desire to end Vegapunk and casually starts explaining herself to the Straw Hats.
-
We also haven't seen much of Garp and what we have seen is basically him being an exposition speaker box. There's still time for Oda for to ruin him like he does most good characters from the pre-timeskip.
-
Since I don't for one second believe that Kidd will be the only one to go to Elbaf (or Kidd might actually decide to not land there, as indicated in this chapter), I think that the unknown person Vegapunk was calling is a giant with an eternal port to his homeland.
After all, what better or more secure place to go into hiding than the land of the giants, especially when they have the library of Ohara stashed away for Vegapunk to enjoy? -
@Shiebs said in Chapter 1071: The Hero Deploys:

Definitely. There are just too many questions around them.
Why is Kuma called tyrant?
What led him to become a revolutionary?
Why did he join the Shichibukai?
Why allowed the WG to turn him into a Cyborg?
What is his race?
Where did Bonney grow up?
What is her deal with WG, was she held captive?
How did she escape? There were fewer mysteries about Law and he got a flashback...

So it's really.more than one person Vegapunks mentioned. my dream of Scooper crushed

What?
No, Pythagoras says they have one more ally. It's just one person. -

@Kishido The official translation avoids pronouns in that scene, but there's also a singular "they" if you weren't aware
-
@realtenchu But Lucci DID get walloped, enough to almost lose consciousness.
If he recovered, it's because Luffy was told to leave. Lucci wouldn't have lasted otherwise.
Meanwhile, Lucci didn't even get to hit Luffy once.

Scopper hope is still alive even if it is at 0.1 %Japan has certain non-gendered pronouns that are convenient to use when you don't want to reveal to the audience if a character is male or female before introducing them.
"They" is the closest thing English has to an equivalent. It can be used both in singular and plural.
-
@Kishido said in Chapter 1071: The Hero Deploys:

I guess the best comparison would be the german Ihr / Sie (siezen).
Usually plural, but can be used in a singular way to address a particular person.Even though it's a different reason why it can be used like that... I hope you get what I mean...
-
Ok thanks at both of you.

From what i understand, Vegapunk mysterious ally is not a pirate otherwise Edison reaction is strange. Also would Sentomaru have accepted a pirate on the island ?

FYI, Vegapunk mysterious ally's Japanese speech style is polite. Wondering who he/she is...
At least he is not Fujitora because Fuji's speech style is polite but pretty old-fashioned. -
I think it's Smoker.
-
@sandman said in Chapter 1071: The Hero Deploys:
@Tarek Hmmm. But Smoker's Japanese speech style is far from being polite even when talking with Fujitora and Aokiji...
Yeah that speaks against it, but out of all the options i've seen people bring up so far, Smoker still seems the most likely candidate to me.
The fact he hasn't been shown at G-14 with Tashigi already seemed suspicious and Edison's comment implies it's someone who is currently not an enemy of the government.

Edit: Off topic, but I made a list of OP characters' speech styles last year.
Yeah, a lot of One Piece characters people like don’t exactly speak in such a subordinate, upbeat, and polite tone.

In my book, the moment Lucci mentioned his conscience was fading was meant to be read that he lost the fight and was knocked out.
By the end of the chapter he had already recovered, but that's because Luffy left (and the chapter suggests some time passed before the end of the chapter, enough for Sentomaru to put up a proper fight and be defeated by CP).
For all purposes, Lucci passed out and was fully defeated right there - meaning Luffy only needed to land 3 attacks to knock him out.

Glad to see that Oda didn't wussify Garp at least.
wait for Helmeppo to explain to him how attacking a yonko is foolish because they have so many commanders and for Garp to give up because it is too reckless.

Sandman, I have a question for you about character speech in the original version. Is it true that if Luffy calls a character a "tomodachi" (ともだち / 友達), he never calls them a "nakama" (なかま / 仲間), and vice versa. I'm just curious if Oda's ever had Luffy switch the term used, or upgraded a character's status as one might have it.
-
OK, so was last week a WSJ break and this week is a Oda break?
-
@Johnny-B-Decent Both are WSJ breaks. The break after 1069 was an Oda break.
-
OK, so as I am to understand it:
12/11 to 12/17: Ch. 1,069
12/18 to 12/24: Oda Break
12/25 to 12/31: Ch. 1,070
1/1 to 1/7: Ch. 1,071
1/8 to 1/14: WSJ Break
1/15 to 1/21: WSJ Break
1/22 to 1/28: Ch. 1,072
1/29 to 2/4: Oda Break
2/5 to 2/11: Ch. 1,073Since WSJ breaks don't reset Oda breaks. But why is WSJ taking a two-week hiatus? Holidays?
-
There is not a 2 weeks hiatus but just the 2 traditional end of year successive double issues.
Chapter 1071 was released officially last friday (it should have been this sunday but there is probably a monday holiday).
When there is a double issue, the scanlation can be very early
1069, oda break, 1070, jump break, 1071, jump break, 1072, oda break -
Iirc scanlations for double issues are only early during the Christmas/New Years back-to-back double issues, they're not early for Golden Week or Obon
-
@sandman ooh very interesting, thanks for the info!
*If you talk like Luffy with your boss, you'll instantly get fired

No way Garp dies without having Luffy witness it directly, especially after how Sabo has been "disappeared" by Imu's giant beam (whether you think he's dead or not is not the point here, the point is that Luffy will likely hear about it after the fact, whether it's from Sabo himself or from some newspaper).
Garp going to Beehive Island likely will hook into whatever lore he had with Rocks and whatever went down on God Valley. He's literally going to the same island Rocks had as his HQ + facing up to a crew and captain that so far has been shown to operate extremely similarly to Rocks' crew. I expect the comparison angle between Rocks and BB will finally be cemented by the one man who has faced up to both in direct combat.

Everytime an author puts out a "really smart character, I swear" for a story I wonder if he'll be able to actually see it or if we are just supposed to believe the Word of God on the topic. I wonder if we are actually gonna see Vegapunk being smart in real time...maybe some tactic or manipulation that makes the reader go "shiiiit, that's smart/cunning!".
-
To be fair with Vega-brainiac, I don't think that making science and manipulating the enemy through a strategy is comparable. And Oda has never gone too deeply in wits and strategy anyway. We've had traitors ---and Akainu manipulating Squard, that's pretty much it from what I can recall.
I mean, did Judge, Caeser or Queen do something smart in "real time" ?
But yeah, if he joins the crew, he'd better do something. Even though he'd be nerfed as a broke scientific...

Hmm, not sure how Vegapunk would do against a Blackbeard Pirate, being part of an 11 vs. 11 against them.
-
@electricmastro Despite Yamato being a red-herring and giving blue-balls to the whole fandom after how she was treated. I still think that wanting to join the crew + facing no opposants among the crew, is more than enough to be a potential candidate.
As for your concern. We'll have to see first who gets to be the 11th captain of Teach.
But to be honest, I don't really see Vegapunk joining the crew as an official crewmate. More like a temporary sailing buddy.

-
@Nilitch Manipulating was just an easy exemplo that came to mind, but I do agree with all you wrote.
I'm just daydreaming that Oda pull some weight to his title of the Smartest Man Alive* in some way...not holding my breath, though.
-
One Piece is not a very strategy heavy manga, like Hunter x Hunter (at the other end of the spectrum). So Vegapunks smartness allows him to do science things, bit not to think about the consequences of his actions. Sengoku and Akainu were praised by their strategy in Marineford and even they didn't do that much... I missed strategy in Onigashima though. Really thought Nami and Usopp would create a plan of counter attacking the beast pirates, bit they were just taken along Tama. The whole Go board of the Cp0 agents was more foe showing the numbers than developing a strategy. Even the samurai's plan was weird: Orochi knew for certain they were alive but Kaidou was still taken by surprise?

One might as well say Jinbe was a red herring because he rejected Luffy to join despite asking him in a previous chapter. Oda also did things like not having Zoro visit Ryuma's grave even though he said he would, and not have Chopper talk about curing the Smiles even though he cared enough to cure the ice oni virus, so at this point I see Wano on more of a glorified pause than at a true end.
Also, as I've mentioned previously, until something drastic happens with Yamato like her giving up on Luffy, giving up on her dreams, or even dying in Wano and becoming a tragic figure like Noland never getting to see Kalgara at Skypiea ever again, then I think it's valid to speculate for the time being of Yamato getting to see Luffy again as sailing buddies.
In fact, this chapter might be an additional reason why Yamato is on temporary leave for now: so that Oda can give focus to Vegapunk and his six bots for the time being. In any case, I look forward to whatever interactions Oda has for the crew, since it seems like they're gearing towards traveling together for a time, until they meet up with Dragon or otherwise.
-
@electricmastro You know sometimes Oda just change his mind, just like he obviously did with Marco's letter. "Red-herring" or not. But yeah, Yamato is on stand-by. But isn't also Tama on "stand-by" ??
Yamato being too strong was and still is at this day a hell of an argument. That's one of, and the most important, reason why this character remains in Wano after all.
As for Vegapunk, he seems too smart to hang out with these idiots. It might be an obvious red-herring, but every SHs is all for him joining. Also, it would quickly kill the balance between Franky, Ussop and Chopper. I mean, right, who needs them anymore ? lol. Even Robin could be useless depending on Vegapunk's knowledge of the ancient language. But it all comes after what Oda did with Yamato, and no one believes in a new crewmate anymore. What's happening in front of our eyes is too good to be true. But Yamato joining was also "too good to be true" regarding how strong she is. What's for sure is that Vegapunk, the most awaited character in the manga, isn't gonna die in the arc he was introduced in, and he can't stay on Egghead either.
Now watch me getting trolled by the team "why did you mention Yamato's name !!? "
-

Well Tama’s primary intent at this point seems to be training herself up, even willing to do it for years if need be, unlike Yamato.
Also, I’m not inclined to believe the “too strong” argument. Might as well say Luffy and Zoro and stop strong because of Conqueror’s, and especially Luffy with Gear 5th. Also might as well say Luffy doesn’t deserve an Emperor crew that will surpass Shanks, which goes against what Luffy said too.
Once again, if Oda has changed his mind, then every relevant chapter that follows will show proof that he has.

How is Vegapunk gonna escape with the Strawhats when his giant brain is literally stuck on Egghead? Has this been brought up earlier? there is a possibility of a plothole here lol. At this point i wouldnt put it past Oda to just rush through the story and overlook such blatant issues

He has a wireless connection to the server, just like the Satellites. Seems like that connection has no range limits.
...or the brain will just float after him... all the time...

Yeaaah, im not talking about the range issue im kinda more worried about the WG literally blowing up his brain. Seems like you cant really escape if you also leave such a crucial part of yourself behind?

@DollarScholar the shrink-shrink fruit

@Shadowgreed What are you talking about?

@DollarScholar you want an alternative of how his brain can be moved from egghead... That's how.. Shrinking it
-
@Shadowgreed im sure there are many ways to move it, im just wondering if Oda will even adress it or just leave it

If he's using internet terminology, then I suppose all the data could function like a USB.
-
@DollarScholar My pet theory is that all the satellite imagery is leading to Punk Records being blasted off into space to become a literal satellite, safely out of the World Government's reach and arguably better positioned for the internet-like remote connection on a global scale.
Of course, there's not really any actual evidence to go on yet, I fully expect to dump the theory when the arc starts pulling toward what Oda actually has planned. But I do think whatever contingency Vegapunk has planned will play a big part in the Egghead finale, and will probably give the Vegaclones their role in the story going forward.
