      Tanjiro plays Sonic Frontiers

Who else is playing Sonic instead of God of War? Or playing both!? (Not me, for either)

If you're playing and purchased DLC, make sure you install it before starting, since apparently it'll be invalid past the tutorial... lol

Hey everyone! Quick notes ahead of Frontiers' launch:
      • If you purchased the Digital Deluxe, please install the DLC before starting a new game

      • DLC content will not be valid if installed after the tutorial area

      • Ensure you have the most recent patch before installing DLC

I'm definitely playing God of War. I've loved some 3D sonic in my day, but they aren't even the same caliber of game. From what I've seen of this through previews and reviews, it appears to be a weird mix of a couple of decent ideas in a maladapted package of ugly-grit backgrounds and wonky camera work.

We live in the open world fad era where apparently every franchise is going to ask the question "can we make this open world?" The answer is almost always no, and this looks no different. Hey guys let's take a game about speed, tight platforming, and timed challenges.. but OPEN WORLD! Typically that's just going to mean more time wasted exploring empty areas which makes everything feel less slick. And then they feel compelled to actually put stuff to find in some of that open space, which results in bloat (useless upgrades, collectibles, minigames, whatever).

I'm just now wrapping up Bayonetta 3 and it suffers from the exact same problem. It's not even really open-world but sure seems like it wanted to be. The levels are unnecessarily sprawling and a mess in terms of collectibles. There is some good platforming, but it's so bogged down by slowly exploring bland maps and not even being able to tell whether a certain object (building, ridge, cliff) is actually explorable or if it's blocked by invisible barriers or death.

Anyway if this game will help them figure out what actually makes a modern Sonic game fun, then awesome. I'll put my money down when they get it right, if ever lol.

I also think the new standard to expect open world everything is exhausting. When I learned about the idea of "open world" my definition of it became "seamless world without loading zones" and not simply just "big area."

I didn't even know Bayonetta was trying to be one too. I watched a bit and it was entertaining.

As for Sonic, one of my gripes is instead about the old mechanic of losing ALL your rings upon getting hit. Getting stuck in a loop of reprioritizing and basically just regrabbing the one ring that survives out of tens or hundreds that you originally collected in the level is so weird to me and makes even less sense in this type of game. I'm surprised they didn't go ahead and tie the rings to retries like Mario Odyssey did with the coins.

There's a lot of questionable things in Frontier so far, but as long as the fans are having fun that's okay.

As someone who didn’t properly play the game when it originally came out. It does not hold up.

To be fair to Sonic Adventure and its sequel, the "modern" ports for those games are awful and introduce a bunch of new glitches that weren't present in the original Dreamcast releases.

Sales reached 2.5 million copies worldwide. The power of the Sonic fanbase.

Only missing one achievement. Will get to it when I get to it. Besides the weird physics and lack of momentum, as well as some questionable gameplay design choices, I genuinely enjoyed this game and had a lot of fun with it.

I was starting to get a bit bored by the third island, so the fourth island was a nice combo breaker. By the fifth island, since it was shorter compared to the second and third, I found myself enjoying the open-world format once again. Wish you could upgrade your speed and rings all at once instead of one by one, that was a pain.

                          spoiler

Still glad I bought the game. The $30.00 price tag from Black Friday certainly didn’t hurt. Excited for the DLC.

Theres more to the final boss. Set the game to "hard" during the 4th titan fight and theres alot more.
