Chapter 1065: Six Vegapunks
-
-
You know, at first I was confused why Oda would pick Pythagoras and Edison of all people to name Vegapunks after. You could hardly find more disparate guys in terms of research and outlook when it comes to science. But then I thought maybe that was the point. Pyhtagoras, who had a borderline mystical vision of science to represent Vegapunk's imagination and Edison, who was all about practicality and profit, to represent the more down-to-earth vision.
But turns out they're the other way around. Vegapunk Edison is the one with the constant stream of wild ideas and Vegapunk Pythagoras is the patient researcher. I wonder if that's intentional subversion or if they're just the first 'science guys' that came to Oda's mind, or he thought their names were cool and whatnot.
-
Huh, in hindsight going to a new place and changing your clothes on a whim was a really, really bad idea. We're lucky Vegapunk isn't more malicious, otherwise they'd all be dead.
-
I think we all assumed “post-apocalyptic society” after Eneru’s cover story, so it’s nice to see those theories vindicated.
I am interested to learn more about:
- Vegapunk’s artificial sun and the undying flame
- Why does becoming a cyborg mean losing your humanity, as Bonney puts it?
- After being hit by the Sea Train, did Franky rebuild himself using Vegapunk’s technology or ancient technology?
- Is Sanji like, 5 years old? The inverse of Momo.
- Are devil fruits simply technology being employed? Or born from literal devils like Tot Musica?
-
I'm always a bit put off by these very hectic action scenes with super small panels including really crummy art. It takes away from the sense of threat the Strawhats are getting from the S-Shark. It's also always disappointing to see Nami being useless but maybe this arc will do something about that?
Apart from that, another fun chapter. It's good to see the Strawhats in high spirits about the island, Franky and Usopp were especially fun.
-
So I suppose Poseidon/Pluton might be leaked out to the outside world in Egghead Arc, since Caribou is now free and Egghead has communication and CP0 personnel who'd eat that info up.

Am getting kinda tired of this wishy-washy feeling Nami is giving off over whether she’ll be fighting full-force or not. It’s as if there’s hesitation for me to get excited over this idea of her being a fighter. More so the case with Usopp. He arguably hasn’t gotten great showcase since Dressrosa.
-
I want to say these chapters are fun, I love the setting and Vegapunk is cool, but the pace is killing me. Vegapunk just up and deciding to go on an exposition dump about the mysterious past for no reason. At the very least have the strawhats discover the robot FIRST and then start talking about it. Let us mull on it for a bit!
The mystery of One Piece's world is one of the things I love the most so seeing it revealed like this is frustrating.

So the ancient kingdom was advanced, what about the rest of the world?. Was the ancient kingdom helping, controlling, developing the rest of the world or they were just hogging all the advanced tech for themselves?.
What about the devil fruits, did they exist at that time, were they a creation of the ancient kingdom or just part of the natural world?. We know that the nika fruit existed at least during the void century.
The world seems to have gone backwards and more magical. The celestial dragons, the victors of the void century indeed wrote the history but for all their power and knowledge, they just can’t completely bring the world to heel. They can’t even control the devil fruits. 800 years should be enough to at least round up and store the most powerful and useful fruits.

Uh, neither? Franky's initial tech was quite basic, just cola-powered machinery. It is after the timeskip that everyone always comments on his laser being special.
-
@onemoment we know that Zoro has no problems cutting off his legs to win though!

Well, the elders didn’t say when exactly the started hunting for the Nika fruit. We know Toki’a fruit was there between 900-800 years ago though.
-
Shaka’s vest is amazing. That's the most important thing I wanted to comment on.
-
@SirCaesar You're right, which is weird Zoro didn't go.
Instead, the crew's supposed smartest members like Nami, Robin, and to an extent Ussop and Sanji got caught in this. It's weird, but it feels like post-time skip the crew isn't using their brains anymore. On the one hand I guess they trust each other and are being more lax, but on the other hand they're world famous pirates and they keep falling for tricks. It's frustrating, but moreso because they really have no reason to trust Vegapunk. In fact with the way Lilith is acting it's the opposite, even if that's being played for comedy.

@karubiDON said in Chapter 1065: Six Vegapunks:

For me, this chapter is just another nail in the coffin that Devil Fruits were made by the Ancient Kingdom.
-
Good chapter leaving me curious on what'll come next from multiple parties here.
Zoro's reaction to Caribou is to be expected, but I'm not totally convinced this means Caribou is actually gonna go off on his own. It's hard to tell if it's just teasing or a serious threat from Zoro, but Caribou is legitimately terrified. They guy could definitely keep groveling or just hiding out around the sunny until something happens to team Zoro. The guy should know Luffy's still his best bet at safety right now, even if the rest of the crew just pick on him.
Franky's about to get distracted by history lore, so it might be awhile, but I hope Franky doesn't forget to ask about Jimboy seemingly having Senior Pink's devil fruit ability. The guy's got the empathy to care about what happened there, and if the Vegapunks respond badly about it, it definitely could end up the wedge that triggers Franky reducing his admiration to the collective Punk. Best case scenario for the Punks being good would be if Pink volunteered for a reduced sentence or something, but if he was experimented on against his will... not gonna look great.
Following up on that history lore; I'm expecting Shaka's main idea here is getting some academic assistance from Robin. Won't surprise me if Shaka strikes a deal with her to play nice and then the rest of the Sanji squad each gets split up to work with a different Vegapunk;
Nami and Lilith for the greedy squad; Franky and Edison to go share invention ideas; Sanji and York to give him a cute girl to feed; And Pythagoras gives me vibes he'd work well with Ussop... or Ussop just gets taken advantage of as manual labor.
Meanwhile it's about time for Luffy (squad) to stumble upon their own part of this dark secret. Bonney's still with them, so they'll still be getting the perspective that Vegapunk is bad and I'm eager to see more of that.

We're back, and right at the possible end of volume 105 for some big reveals and a nice little bit of action to round out the book. That last page has me feeling like mysteries that have been building for most of my lifetime are creeping closer to being resolved.
We get another Film Red colour spread to kick things off. It's weirdly late from the movie's release date, but two sets of colour pages has been the standard for movie promos since Film Gold. One for Oda's illustrated film poster, which we had in the last volume, and another more traditional colour spread featuring characters from the movie. And though the two feel far apart in this case, they're actually closer together than Film Gold's poster and spread were, at least in terms of number of chapters. And everything else aside, it actually lines up well with international release dates. Having the spread be just a series of close-up panels definitely feels flat compared to normal One Piece spreads. Some of the character pairings are surprising, but I haven't had a chance to see the movie yet, so there's probably stuff I'm missing about who interacts with who during it.
Glad to see some lingering questions being tied up in the first scene. I would have loved to have seen the negotiation that bought Caribou his passage on the Sunny, locked up in a barrel. Zoro is also being very pragmatic here. And with Brook around he shouldn't have too much trouble reaching the others in an emergency. You'd hope so, anyway.
I'm very intrigued by what Lilith said about the island being powered by fire. It definitely seems like she doesn't mean solar, given the talk of making a sun, and the comment about an eternal flame can only lead me to think of the ancient Lunarians. This is one to stick a pin in.
The Seraphim Jinbe reveal is a great moment, and the fight that follows is a lot of fun. Does Usopp really think Jinbe would have a son he just never mentioned to the crew? And I wonder what colour this thing is actually going to be, splitting the difference between Fishman blue and Lunarian tan for the skin tone. I love seeing the crew go all in with their top level techniques right off the bat. Well, maybe Nami held back a little. But still, I appreciate when former finishing moves can be just a part of a characters' toolset instead of something they only get access to in special situations. They make a good showing, but I can see now why the World Government was so confident in the Seraphim as a replacement for the Warlords. Lunarian speed/durability buffs, laser beams and additional Devil Fruits are a whole lot of buffs to put on top of clones of already-powerful individuals.
And fake Jinbe seemingly having access to Senor Pink's fruit is something that has my mind buzzing. Is this another example of Vegapunk replicating a fruit's ability artificially, like they did with Borsalino's laser? The holograms and Atlas's gloves and the door Lilith and the crew just entered through show that they're experimenting with tangibility, which feels in a similar ballpark to treating any surface like a liquid. But at the same time, Pink was presumably arrested with the rest of the Doflamingo family, so the Government could very easily have access to his fruit if they wanted to execute him for it. I wonder, in that case, how Franky would feel to learn the scientist he looked up to was complicit in the death of the man he promised to share a drink with. And seeing one Seraphim with a devil fruit raises the question of what powers the others will have. The young Hancock showed no sign of her trademark power, but it's hard to imagine the likes of her, Crocodile or Doflamingo without their abilities. What kind of mixing and matching are we doing to see here?
Another throwaway line that has my attention: the mention of green blood during the monitoring of the Seraphim's fight. That can't be something they picked up from the Lunarians, we'd have heard about it during the King fight. When one of these things takes a real hit, is it actually going to be green inside? That's not going to show particularly well in a black and white manga, is it?
We also get the last handful of Vegaclones this week. Shaka, Edison and Pythagoras are all really likable designs. York is too, but hits way too close to Oda's standard Nami/Bonney/Lilith looks, even with her rounder cheeks. The interplay between the group is where the idea to split the scientist up really shines. Vegapunk didn't create six copies of themself, they really are one person split into six parts, with the different pieces taking on bodily functions and emotional regulation for the whole group, allowing the scientist parts to function unimpeded by the human stuff the rest of us have to deal with. It's a very clever setup.
Love Usopp wondering if he could be a Vegapunk too. Great gag.
But it's obviously the final spread that steals the show in this one. Advanced technology from the past. Am I shocked? No. Finding out what was up with the robots and ruins on the moon has ranked among my most anticipated One Piece answers for like a decade now. But I'm so excited to finally be talking about it. Finding out with near-certainty that the Ancient Kingdom wiped out by the World Government in the Void Century was the one with the spacefaring tech was always a reasonable guess, but it's one more thing we can all connect on our corkboards now. And that's quite a viking-looking machine in the last panel. Something to do with giants, perhaps? But to a giant, that would be more of a power suit than a super robot. The upper arms are too thin for a humanoid of proportionate size to wear it though. So was the robot inspired by the giants, or were the giants inspired by the robots? Whatever the case, the art on this page is absolutely breathtaking.
I can't wait to see how Oda builds on this all next week as we start moving into the vague ballpark of volume 106.

Why? We had a crewmate never telling them that he's an actuall prince from a fallen kingdom. And Jinbe just joined the crew and had mostly pragmatic interactions with the crew prior to him finally joining for real.
"He just never mentioned to the crew" sounds a bit weird for a guy who just boarded the ship. -
I like all the vegapunk designs. Shaka's probably my favorite. Everytime I look at him the main theme from tron: legacy starts playing in my head. Lol.

@Ivotas A week of downtime after the battle, several more days before the crew departs, and then whatever travel time it took to reach Egghead allows a lot of downtime with nothing better to do than get to know each other. And you'd think a kid would be pretty quick to come up.

Check chapter 358, page 3. Who did this ship belong to? It looks ancient from the weathered sails… but futuristic, given that it’s plated with metal :)

I repeat, Sanji didn't tell them he was a prince for years. I'm aware that the reason for Sanji keeping quiet has to do with a troubled past he wanted to put behind him. But then again, who's to say that in the eyes of the Strawhats this isn't yet another emotional baggage a crewmate aimed to keep hidden. Especially with this "kid" sitting in a WG laboratory and having wings and shit. After going through Arlong Park, Enies Lobby and Wholecake Island the Strawhats most likely are adjusted to the idea that maybe the crewmates open up bit by bit, layer by layer rather than spilling the beans about everything in the first week of travel. Especially with the captain just recently revealing what his dream actually is.
Of course this isn't Jinbei's kid thus he's not keeping infofmation about a son private. But the Strawhat's don't know that. And from their perspective it wouldn't be the first time they didn't know everything about a crewmate. Thus my point still stands.
-
How many Strawhats got the lecture that Fishman/Merfolk offspring were sorta wildcards though? Easy to forget when you’re a human, I’m sure, that a fishman having a son that looks just like them is 1/a billion.
-
Seraphim Jinbei pretty much confirms that we are at least getting Seraphim for the original 7 Warlords. Are they going to be named after there animal themes then? (Shark for Jinbei, Snake for Boa, Hawk for Mihawk). It's gonna be akward when they get to Crocodile lol
-
They are all numbered so....
-
@Captain-M Robin sailed with them for weeks and no one knew she was some sort of apocalypse-bringing scholar.
No one in the crew is entitled to know everyone's life story.

Luffy's super famous grandpa never came up. Same for his brother. Sanji family never came up. it seems no one that didnt meet Laboon knew about him in thriller bark. the strawhats dont really volunteer stories about their lives. Usually its outside people that reveal their personal info.

I assumed it was Guy-Manuel from Daft Punk, but that makes more sense seeing how Yude-Ron is that one YTer that Oda watches a lot, right?
Though, I can see it being a mix of both, honestly. Oda does tend to base a lot of designs off of pop culture, or just stuff he thinks is cool.

Shaka is literally wearing the Daft Punk helmet.

I have a theory on the happenings of One Piece that is probably wrong just like everyone else's theory. I believe in the Hindu theory of Hanuman/Rama, Ravana, and Trisiras being the basis for Luffy, Imu, and Blackbeard respectively (see 333vil for more information). I think the relationship though between Imu and Joyboy is much different than people think. Imu may be female, I can't promise that. I think they once had aligned goals. Freedom could have been lost in a high-tech society and Imu and Joyboy could have both pushed and rebelled... trying to get a reset. They could have had a different opinion on how the world should have existed after the Ancient Kingdom was brought down. Joyboy may have pushed for complete freedom, where the spontaneous generation ruled and people could carry out their lives. Imu on the other hand may have had other plans, to force the world to remain in a pre-tech phase with he/she as the leader. I think Imu basically stabbed Joyboy in the back and his will lives on in Luffy. I think Joyboy was actually the original pirate, had the eye patch and everything. Both he and Imu teamed against the Ancient Kingdom, but Imu turned on him and used the ancient weapon Uranus and some sort of mighty devil fruit in order to control the world(along with the OP OP for immortality). People keep thinking that Joyboy was the head of the Ancient Kingdom, and I'm just not feeling that vibe. Remember, Joyboy was a pirate. He had a crew. Imu could have been his first mate or something. I feel there were bad things about the Ancient Kingdom and the two plotted against it and overthrew it, only for Joyboy to be subsequently turned on.
-
@hitta7 Could you explain which of the three correlate to each mythic figure, please?
-
Luffy to Hanuman, Joyboy to Rama(exists in the heart of Hanuman), Imu is Ravana, and Blackbeard is Trisiras.

Is Nami supposed to be as stupid with children as Sanji is with women; like, she won't attack a child no matter how strong it is?

She is preparing an attack that jimbei detect and dives into the ground to avoid it so no.
She just wont go all out from the getgo. Which if you dont know the kid isnt the craziest way to start a fight.
-
@desa I don't know. She hesitated to let Zeus out and was then saved by Sanji's punk ass.
I'm just not sure when her whole thing with children started. I remember it in Punk Hazard, but before that? I don't remember that being a thing for her.
-
@danie
Before that we didn't had an arc which focused on lots of little children, maybe the occasional one like Asia in Skypia and Chimney in Water7. Those were all kids who were happy so no need for Nami to act up or behave differently. Punk Hazard was a good arc to introduce us to that side of Nami's character.
So it doesn't break the character for me.Now onto the chapter, we've got to see all Vegapunks this early in the arc makes me think, that the arc might not be that long, if no other characters make an appearance on Egghead.
I'm glad I was not the only one who's thought went directly to the Lunarians when VP talked about an undying flame. This makes me wonder does he have a bunch of Seraphims underground to power the city, similar to Mary Geoise had the slave underground to move the streets.
I love the last spread, where Shaka talks to Franky and we see Luffys group standing before the giant robot. It's a really cool narrative choice to carry over his speech bubbles onto the page and only see Luffy's action and some smaller comments by Jinbe.
If Kuma should somehow be a D or whatever Teach is, maybe Luffy can somehow access the robot, which Vegapunk couldn't.
This arc is really good, but thats every new arc. I cannot wait for the next chapters, maybe we shift the focus to yet another group. -
@Captain-M said in Chapter 1065: Six Vegapunks:
Does Usopp really think Jinbe would have a son he just never mentioned to the crew?
No one in the crew talks about their pasts. No one knew Luffy had a brother until they met him. And no one knew Luffy had a second brother until they met him. And no one knew Luffy's dad was world renowned mega threat Dragon. And a lot of them didn't know that he knew Shanks until it came up....
Heck, even us readers still have no idea what Brook's deal pre-Laboon is. Or what Jinbe did in the ten years becoming a warlord and when we met him, or how he got his scar. And we knew Sanji for like 19 years before discovering his secret past that wasn't Baratie related.
Love Usopp wondering if he could be a Vegapunk too. Great gag.
Usopp's joked about it. It will now come true somehow.
-
@Sengokusgoat Well, Edison is well-known for his light bulb, and Vegapunk Edison is constantly hit with "light bulb moments" which is whenever he got his flash of inspirations.

I mean she literally interacted with Children who were supers strong, drugged and would go on a rampage if they missed their fix.
She understands that the child might not be in control, so she chooses not to go all out

Vegapunk is so fun. We've been waiting for more than half of the series' runtime to meet him, but so far it's been worth it.
The idea that he didn't split only his body, but also his personality is really cool. It both makes for a fun cast of weird scientists, and creates intrigue for just what kind of person is the main Vegapunk going to be. He has made many ethically questionable things to say the least, and it's a bit telling that two of his personalities are devoted to "negative" traits (Lilith is Evil and Atlas is Wrath), while the other four are more impersonal (Edison and Pythagoras just do "cold" scientific research, York just does bodily functions, and Shaka... seems to be a decent guy?), but everyone spoke very well of him in his home island, and overall we've been getting an ambigous vibe from him.
An entire body being devoted to eat/poop/sleep and seemingly not even being able to talk is pretty creepy, though. I wonder how far Oda's going to explore this potential thread. The fight with Seraphim Jinbe was cool, him having Pink's fruit is also a stroke of genius. Can't help but feel worried for Pink though... Maybe he's dead and that's why his meeting at a bar with Franky was drawn as a non-canon chapter cover. I always found that a little weird, but it's only clicking now.
Otherwise, Vegapunk can now wholesale copy Devil Fruits. He already did that with Kaido's fruit but that was supposed to be a secret, at least to the WG, while now DF clonation is public. Assuming Pink is still alive, of course.
The final reveal isn't super surprising, with the Ancient Kingdom having built Pluton and all the similarities to Atlantis assuming they were very technologically advanced was sort of a 2+2. I'd agree that these reveals are being introduced in a bit of an anticlimatic way, but so far the set-up of the island is still very intriguing and these are easily the most fun chapters we've had in a long while. -

It's also probably a psychological warfare thing, the childlike appearance is supposed to make fighters hesitate (it was the same thing on Amazon Lily).
-
I guess if we're gonna see Seraphim Teach, and Vegapunk maybe explaining what's the deal with his body.
-
To be fair, Pythagoras and Edison do not come as very controversial, which is how these two should have been imo. These are two very safe choices. But I don't really mind though, this is One Piece.

I first thought so, but in retrospect I doubt it. This chapter we have Vegapunk explicitly mentioning that he wants the Seraphim to grow stronger, to the point where he expects them to even endure lasers. I think these are still juvenile creatures - literally weapons still under development - and their adult form will be even more of a threat. The psychological warfare aspect is real, but possibly not part of the initial goal.
-
Shaka is the only good design outta the six, the others are trash ( design wise )
After York showcase i think it's confirmed that there is no zero version or main body
He really split himself, I wonder how ? No answer would satisfy except a DF effect
Although he set an example which made it confusing a little, I think it's clear that Egghead takes place on the ruins of the prosperous kingdom
I don't know how some people failed to see it this way thinking they are two different islands. Luffy's panel with that ancient mecha giant says it all without the need of reading texts.
He set an example to simplify his words and not to give a different new info. -
There is a decent chance that the Vegapunks are actually influenced by the planets of astrology. You have the "intellect" planets Mercury and Jupiter. Mercury is thinking, Jupiter is Wisdom. You have the orientation planets Venus brings things in from the outside, Mars is aggressive and attacks. Then you have the split between the Moon and Dark Moon Lilith, moon being the emotions and Lilith being that chaos that man seeks.
If this is the case there are 7 bodies. The "soul" probably resides in the 7th body which makes it a representation of the Sun.
-
What's Sun God Nika going to say about Vegapunk wanting to create a sun...

Luffy should have something that is on another level to "red hawk" and "red roc" in "gear 5"... I doubt Oda will take it too far though. Nika was probably just called the Sun God mostly in metaphor. Not that I would be mad if Luffy started spamming plasma attacks in his fight against Blackbeard. That would be awesome.

But they are also artificially enlargening them like the Punk Hazard kids, note how Franky mentions the Seraphim to be of the same height as adult Jimbei. The development might not mean actual growing up but just growing larger.
