Black Nerd nicely broke down the music heard to point out all the themes spotted:
The Super Mario Bros. Movie

-
Definitely some Princess Bride vibes. Hilarious.
Seriously, it's like so far almost everything we've seen has been great. EXCEPT for Chris Pratt's voice. Which is a big thing.
-
I know it won’t happen but I’d really love to see Chunky Kong appear in this movie or maybe a Donkey Kong Spin off, I love him
-
New poster
-
I think I dig it! I look forward to seeing this on the walls.
-
Okay, I'm legit impressed. And its by something absolutely no one will care about.
Look at the logo.
"Nintendo" and "The" are positioned on the far left. "Movie" is positioned on the far right. The words aren't centered, to the point it looks like a mistake, or like Nintendo was added as an afterthought.
But what it actually is, is the asset isn't just stamped on thoughtlessly. It's shaped to follow the actual art, matching the curve or the volcano land and stopping right where it transitions to the bushes, making sure to not obstruct any art and follow the flow.
Someone in production put in that time and effort to completely off kilter all the logo asetts in order to make it look better WITH the art. i'm sure it'll be centered and lined up properly everywhere else. But its neat that someone in some rung of development worked with the art, AND it got approved like that. Probably a dozen people had to look at that, ask "why isn't the logo centered" and get the explanation, and then agree with it.
I still have serious doubts because Illumination doesn't have a single good movie to their credit, but hey, the poster is good..
-
Who wants Pedro Pascal to voice Mario in the movie now?
-
Why is there a random Koopa Paratroopa above Kamek? It looks like he’s given enough space on the poster to be an important character himself but I don’t recognize him
Would be funny if he switched sides and turned out to be Parakarry
-
He's probably just a general Koopa so that Bowser has more than just Kamek on his side.
-
-
If there going to have a bunch of random background Kongs why not Chunky Kong, Lanky Kong and Tiny Kong, instead of just made up characters
-
Oh hey, they did the thing. The thing from the 90s cartoon.
-
There's so much cheese I love it, haha. Especially on their 90s website too https://www.smbplumbing.com/
Did you guys try calling the number? I read what happens but you should try if you're from the US.
-
@Cinder I just called the number. Whatever else you can say about this movie, they're definitely putting some effort into the marketing.
-
@Shiebs I think their IP is still with Rare.

Awww that sucks
What about Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong or Kiddy Kong?
Hell I’d even take Karate Kong, Sumo Kong, Dread Kong and Ninja Kong
It looks like there just making a bunch of random kongs in that new rainbow road poster
Why not use ones that actually exist?

Yeah, whoever's doing the marketing is doing a great job.

Isn't that Eddie the Mean Old Yeti in the lower left corner?

Oh shit! From the tv show? That’s awesome! I didn’t realize that
What about the other ones I wonder? Are they all more obscure characters I didn’t recognize?

It's hard to think that grey fur and stocking cap combination is entirely coincidental, especially after the last trailer and all of the SMBSS easter eggs.
Far as the others go, we won't know for sure until we get a HD version of that poster but that guy on the yellow cart behind what looks like Eddie has a line just below his nose that might be a mustache.
-
Apparently the lady in the commercial is voiced by Jeannie Elias, the OG voice of Peach from the Super Show!.
-
She even kinda looks like Princess Toadstool when you take into account the difference in style.
Reddish hair, the basic eyeshape, and the lips.
-
-
Final Trailer is out
-
I’m not surprised Bowser doesn’t associated with Spinies they’re the most aggravating of all the Super Mario Enemies.
-
That's some fun Mario Kart.
-
^ They even through in a double dash reference.
-
The website was updated and is referencing a lot of Nintendo stuff (I caught Kid Icarus' music and old "water is so beautiful" meme, but there's probably more).
-
If they make a Zelda animated movie they better have a Zora, Goron and Deku ally
I love those three after Majora’s Mask

Can't not have a shout-out to Luigi's mansion:
-
Luigi's origin story on why he's often portrayed as a scaredy-cat. Because of all this early trauma!!
-
Charlie Day looks like he's doing a great job as Luigi. And I swear I'm hearing a little more (fake) Italian accents in Mario, but that may be wishful thinking. And they got Khary Payton to voice King Penguin, who is cracking me up.
Seriously, other than Chris Pratt all of this so far is looking just shy of perfect.
-
I'm not sure what the big deal is with the crispy rat now, like it's almost gotten personal with the internet because it's him. I mean, when he was first announced I was disappointed that Martinet wasn't doing it, but I also didn't exactly have an impression other than feeling like I've seen his name all over the place, recognizing his name again from GotG and Garfield. I know about the funny "Mario voice no one's heard before!" thing and all and the jokes about how it just sounds like his normal voice. But after all these trailers I feel like it's all pretty overblown?
-
I'm getting less annoyed the more I hear. I just hope he doesn't confirm the assumptions people have been having.
-
I wouldn't be surprised in the least if they had Chris come back in and re-record a couple of "Wahoos!" and the like after the internet threw a fit over the impression left by the first trailer.
Because its clear the trailer making people knew Jack Black's Bowser was solid, and they wanted as little of Pratt's Mario in the there as possible.
If they had him doing the lines he does by the third trailer, I have to to think they would have led with that. They VERY specifically threw in some game specific sounds to calm people down.
We'll obviously never know one way or the other but...

It's because he keeps getting voice roles in animated films when he's just not that good at it. He doesn't have a super distinct voice or way of talking that demands he be used, so it's just... why him? Both Lego movies, Onward (in a role that should have been Jack Black) and he's going to be Garfield next?
It's a frustration that goes back decades now with animated films. Ever since Robin Williams was THE selling point as Genie in Aladdin, feature films keep getting star names to be characters just for the star name, rather than the acting, or using established VAs, and its tireseome.
I think the worst modern example is that theatrical scooby doo movie where they cast a random "name" to play Fred, even though they had Frank Welker (who has done the voice in every iteration for FIFTY FOUR YEARS) in the booth ANYWAY to record Scooby.

Well Teen Titans Go To The Movies was the one exception
Ball busting aside I hope that people keep this same energy when convincing Nintendo that the characters in their games specifically the main characters can (& should) have fully voiced dialog enough of this heroic mime bullshit.
And anyone complains like they did with Super Mario Sunshine let them touch fuzzy.

Zac Efron?

Eh, he was fine in the Lego movies, but that may be partly because the whole point of his character was that he was "average".

If that's the name of not Frank Welker, sure.
They didn't get their standard Shaggy back either, even though he was used in the live action movies!

They had him play a second character in the sequel with the exact same voice and the entire joke was that he was Chris Pratt (with references to his other movies down to the raptor training) and he was like the cool version compared to Emmet, and he did nothing to distinguish the two characters. Like, even if that's the joke do SOMETHING to distinguish yourself from... yourself.
Like it doesn't need to be at the level of Jaleel White switching from nerd Steve Urkel to cool guy Stefhan Urkehl but do SOMETHING.
-

Wait they also used someone not Lillard and not Welker in the same picture? Damn, that's some bad choices.
-
I wouldn’t say Zac Enfron & Wil Forte are randoms.
Admittedly though I did have to remember who Gina Rodriguez was. The most odd casting choice though was Tracy Morgan as Captain Caveman.
-
I guess if you look at when footage was first shown and "now", Chris's Mario sounds.....not as flat? The fact is he's still not a character actor, and has been the to-go everyman handsome main character guy for a while now. Still wanna see the whole movie to judge properly, but ain't no way he's outshining JACK BLACK Bowser

It's entirely possible to only ever use one voice for your roles and every single one of them feel like a completely different character. For instance, nobody is going to listen to confuse Bob's dialogue for Archer's for instance even though H. Jon Benjamin just uses the same voice. It's just the delivery and inflections are different despite sounding exactly alike.
Pratt just sounds like Pratt to me; it's not even that he doesn't sound like I think Mario should sound like since I grew up with the DiC shows. He just sounds okayish at best and really stiff at worst.
Of course, I've always said all along that they could have just had Jack Black play both Mario and Bowser and not a single person would have blinked because he would have put 150% effort into both characters.
-
Nah we only need Black being a ham in one role not two.
-
@Time-Control-Magician said in The Super Mario Bros. Movie:

They were picked to do animated characters they have no association with and aren't the best pick for, because they're known for their live action stuff and are a better selling "name" than someone that only does VA work that general audiences don't know.
It's a very long standing practice for theatrical animated films to grab a name rather than a talent. Acting and voice acting are NOT the same skill. Sometimes they truly are the best choice despite the stunt casting (most of the Lion King cast) and sometimes they can wreck the film (Rosie Odonnel in Tarzan, Jason Alexander in Hunchback, Martin Short in Treasure Planet) and sometimes it doesn't really matter because the directors did a good enough job they got the performance that was needed and called for.
You've heard of Zac Efron, that's the entire point. But it could have also been Tom Felton or Robert Pattison or Shia Labuff or Darren Chris or... any male actor in their early thirties. He wasn't picked because he was a fantastic new voice for Fred, he was picked because he was... Zach Efron.
The peak absurdity is probably something like the live action Chipmunk movies where not only are the voices are pitched up so you can't tell who it is anyway, they also have different singing voices.
-

100% true. Some actors James Earl Jones and Tony Jay and Keith David and Kristen Schall and Katey Segal only have one voice, one VERY DISTINCT voice, but they used it well and have had varied characters over the years.
-
I think Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan Key and Seth Rogan are all perfect picks
And Anya Taylor Joy is great in everything I’ve seen her in
With both the last of us and arcane being insanely great video game adaptations there might be some hope for this to be a good film, so fingers crossed! I’m not expecting a whole lot though

I’ll be honest I didn’t even know Martin Short was in Treasure Planet. But are we sure he was the thing that “wrecked “ the film?
or Shia Labuff
In 2020?
Also someone better tell LaBeouf someone’s running around copying his name.
or Darren Chris
Random name
Also I do get the idea of having a voice actor that’s know for playing a character usually going to that actor from time to time for the same role.
But as the Kevin Conroy & Mark Hamill thing has shown I’m perfectly fine with newer actors being brought in under the right circumstances “different take” “original actor can’t perform” to voice characters who already have established voice actors”.
