Chapter 1062: Adventure in the Land of Science

"miracle fruit, (Synsepalum dulcificum), also called miracle berry, evergreen shrub of the family Sapotaceae, grown for its mild fruits that make subsequently eaten sour foods taste sweet. The miracle fruit plant is native to tropical West Africa, where it is used locally to sweeten palm wine and other beverages."
That's interesting, I didn't know there were foods that could completely change the flavor of other food and beverages!
-
So cute. Anyone else notice that Chopper gave his Wano hat to Jinbe who then stored it in his kimono? Right the brasier! lol
-
Awesome chapter. Love all the Vegapunks so far. Shaka handling the situation the way they did is just satisfying.
I've got a weird feeling about Lucci... let's see where this will end up...
-
so the official release hasn't fixed the atlas blunder ?
sleepy is an understatement for those guys, bleh
I would've liked this version of Lucci if only Oda hadn't already ruined him back in revere, making him a total ass kisser for saint charlos, disgusting memory.

Loved the way Zoro spoke to Vegapunk. For some reason it never really dawned on my that Zoro would have questions for Vegapunk, most likely in regards to Kuma. I mean it makes sense, especially after Franky explained the situation further once they got back together. Current One Piece kind of gave the feeling that might be over looked.
Or maybe it's not that I didn't think Kuma/Vegapunks motives wouldn't get explained but just that Zoro would specifically have questions about it.
Seeing Jinbe react to Bonnie's claim, the island and the holograms is nice. Gives of further confirmation that he isn't as wordly as he initially appeared. They way he reacted to Bonnie makes me wonder does he know anything about Kuma's situation? He seemed so surprised by the idea that Vegapunk could or maybe would turn a human into an emotionless weapon, you gotta wonder if he has any idea of Kuma's situation or that he might be related to Bonnie. Last chapter she didn't explicitly say anything about Kuma to the group did she?
Lucci has some sense. Assigned to assassinate the most important person on the planet. Aint that some ship.
Oh and Vegapunk saying he has interest in the Straw Hats gets my imagination running wild. Judge/Sanji, Kuma/Zoro, Franky/everything, Devil Fruits in general. It's time we figure it all out!
-
I wonder how strong Lucci is now, Who’s Who said he was his equal and Jinbei trashed him
What do you guys think, I’d say Luffy is definitely more powerful than him but what do you think about Zoro and Sanji facing off against him
Also I’m very sad only Lucci and Kaku are the returning CP9 members, especially after the cover story where they all seemed to have bonded
Also I still think Kuma gets a new body by the end of this arc
-
Yeah, I'm going to assume the Punk Luffy's group encountered is indeed Atlas "the violence" regardless of it supposed to be 05 or 06. "Violence" does seem to suit her more than "greed" though, so they just have to switch "violence" for "greed" and Atlas for York respectively for the volume release. Or just switch the 6 for a 5 on her. Whatever's easier.
I'm not sure about the Kuma seraphim though. Why no white hair and flame? If not a mistake then I guess it's something that gets activated when they are supposed to fight.
-
Finally, another "Adventure on..." chapter. I'm so looking forward to some sci-fi schenanigans.
But, there's noone living on Egghead except for the Punks and their creations, right?

It is not a translator's job to change the material to fix its mistakes.
Zoro's bounty was rectified by Oda's crew on twitter as soon as that chapter was officially released in Japan, so it made sense for the simultaneous english release to already reflect that.
But that was an extremely rare exception, not the standard. Mistakes are fixed when the chapter is put in a volume not when it is translated. -
Sawyer7Mage reminded me Bonney posed as Queen Conney of the Sorbet Kingdom. I didn’t realize there were hints in story about Bonney’s relationship to Kuma and thought the theory was all based off the Vivre Card or Databook info.
-
This is one of those weeks where the official translation is much much better than the scans, and the chapter was already pretty fun to begin with.
I'm loving Dr. Vegapunk thus far. The concept is great, and Vegapunk is the perfect character for it. I'm especially fond of the "Good" and "Evil" dynamic.
I was still banking on the Blackbeard Pirates being the ones who invaded Cacao Island in the beginning of this cover story, so I'm happy to see Aokiji now confirming my expectations. I guess their main target is Pudding, which is great to bring her back to the story in a future arc. I feel like her personal arc is still incomplete, so welcome back!
-
I assumed the Blackbeard Pirates were after the road Poneglyph
Never occurred to me they might be after Pudding too
-
Someone has to kidnap Pudding and I suppose Blackbeard makes sense for it. Whoever does take her will have to come back into the story so Sanji can rescue her. And I'd rather see Blackbeard than Germa so...

I don't know if Lucci's an asskisser as much as its "These guys literally let me get away with murder so I'm gonna stick by them".
As for the Atlas blunder, it might not be a simple fix. Maybe Atlas is meant to be no.5 and it should actually say 5 on her skirt rather than 6. We'll have to see when the volume comes out.

If Kuma is truly Bonney's dad, then I'm pretty sure Bonney can't actually be of elderly age in reality, because Kuma is 47. If Kuma became a dad at 18, then Bonney would be 29 in reality, because 47 - 29 = 18.
Bonney’s comment referring to herself as a kid in past-tense is as if to say she’s not a kid anymore either, and must truly be of young adult age then.
-
A bit strange that Shaka and Lilith's attributes are stylized as "the good" and "the evil" but CP0's chart uses terms that can't really follow "the" like "violence."
-
@electricmastro Bonney's estimated age is 24 i believe, so if Kuma is 47, he was 23 when Bonney was born.
-
I really hope Zoros question/request is about helping the people from Wano with the afterefects of the SMILES.
Wano promised so much of what makes Zoro a cool character but the only pay-off was another "cool fight" which is always the lamest part of Zoro. Also I really hope Luccis not supposed to be a threat once again. At this point at the very least everybody from Luffy to Franky should be able to stomp them and we desperately need some scenes that show the world reacting to the threat level the crew poses nowadays. Vegapunk talking about Robin and Zoro was a great first step, there's no need to ruin that by letting Lucci defeat crewmembers.
That being said, MAN, do the new chapters feel good and fresh again, I was a bit jaded after many things during Wano felt off for me, but this is rekindling my love for the series.

If taken at face value, yeah.
-
it was an external info yet i don't think Oda would lie about her age
he said 22 then it's 22, i know it crushes theories about her being an old person tricking everyone which is far more exciting plot than seeking revenge for her brain dead dad, but it is what it is. the direction is already made and we're about to get deep into it.

It was "estimated" in a sbs. I think it was just Oda being cheeky because of her ability.
-
So Bonney gave up being a princess/Queen of Sorbet Kingdom for the pirate life, huh?
-
Kuma was a king, a revolutionary, and then a pirate warlord/cyborg that is now mindless? That's wild.
So ridiculous that the government just let the celestial dragons have him considering what a powerful ability he has.
-
@danie Who would have thought when we saw Kuma and Doflamingo for the first time that both were royalty?
-
Bonney's age was never stated. Both times it was given (SBS and Vivre Card) it was explicitly said it was an estimation based on her usual appearance.
But now that we know she is Kuma's daughter, there wouldn't be any point in that estimation being wrong since there wouldn't be much variation anyways.
Unless, of course, she is still a child (I made a mental note of the panel where she and Luffy are cheering, but only he is drinking from the usual "alcoholic mug" while she has a milkshake).@danie said in Chapter 1062: Adventure in the Land of Science:

And there's probably more to their family, considering Akainu said he had goosebumps when he heard Bonney had escaped from the WG.

Don't take this as too much of a detriment to the Wano arc, but chapter 1062 is one of the most exciting and enjoyable One Piece releases I've seen in years. Oda is clearly having the time of his life being free from the confines of Wano and Onigashima to design new characters and environments in a whole other style. The weaponised sea beasts and children's toyboy sci fi world they live in are the kind of thing that have been exculsive to altered reality of colour spreads for so much of the series' run, but can now be unleashed in actual panels. Even the cover story provides a huge and intriging development in the probable presence of Kuzan in Tottoland a few weeks ago. Germa's Emotionless Excursion had been fun enough so far, but now I'm all in.
Franky's wide-eyed enthusiasm at Vegapunk's arrival is wonderful to see. The opening scene as a whole is great, both for deepening the Vegapunk mystery, giving us these increadible sea beasts, and giving some credit to the crew's increasingly fearsome reputation. I love seeing Zoro and Robin recognised for the high level threats they are, especially when you can look back over the scene and see how ready for action they look even before it's mentioned. But what, I wonder, is Zoro planning to demand of Vegapunk? Is it just to let them go and/or take them to Luffy's group, or does he have something more specific in mind? I can't think of anytime he'd shown an interest in technology previously, so could it have something to do with him being the Strawhat who interacted the most with Kuma back in the day? Or maybe something he picked up during the timeskip or in the offscreen portion of Wano's epilogue. Most likely, it's him just taking control of the situation.
But the real meat of the chapter is obviously what Luffy's group gets up to. What can you even say about this scene. It's gorgeously drawn, it's funny, it's creative, it doesn't look like anything else coming out in the shonen world right now. I might have liked to see more from Jinbe throughout, but Bonney's chemistry with Luffy and Chopper more than makes up for it.
I'd love for volume 105 to have a cover that draws on the spread of the island's interior, like an updated version of what volume 83 did for Whole Cake Island's environment. We're about in the middle of this volume now, but I'd also be willing to go all in on "Adventure in the Land of Science" as the book's title.
And then there's the man of the hour, Vegapunk. Everything about this scientist raises more questions. Even working out how to refer to them is difficult. The fact that two out of six bodies drawn so far lean feminine might have suggested they were a woman all along, but Robin's dialogue suggests Vegapunk is known (or at least presumed) to the world at large to be a man. While Lilith tries to act like an enemy, the larger story seems to be positioning them as an ally to the crew in the long term (and despite all the World Government atrocities their technology has enabled). Atlas even manages to drop some interesting philosophical arguments about the subjectiveness of reality. I'm really digging the number of levels this character is operating on.
Oh, and design-wise, I could take or leave Lilith as a standard Oda pretty girl design, but the Astro Boy vibes coming off of Atlas (hey didn't old mate Atom actually have a character called Atlas too?) are top notch.
But what's with the name and number discrepancy between the chapter and the explanation? I thought this would be one of those things like the recent bounty where a typo in the print release was fixed up for digital editions, but there it remains. Weird. A volume edition correction is a long way away. So maybe Oda's actually setting something up here, some kind of Vega-clone switcharoo. I'll be keeping an eye on this one.
Finally, there's Cipher Pol. I'm curious to see what the World Government's reasons for cutting ties with Vegapunk are. We've known for a long time that they didn't start out working for the Government, that their research was only assimilated after the arrest of MADS, so is it just that time is up on the deal they made then? Or did they discover something they shouldn't have? Gone rogue? Or just outlived their usefulness? The World Government is pulling out stops it never has before and is showing an uncharacteristic willingness to upset the status quo in this post-Reverie world. All this said, I'm not convinced that Lucci is going to be the final boss of this arc. I'm curious to see how far he's come since Ennies Lobby, but I can't think of any reason to bet on him in a rematch. Only Stussy is untested, but she alone isn't enough to carry an arc's endgame battle.
The Seraphim might have been a candidate, but Lucci talks about the Kuma one like it's somehow malfunctioning. Curious too that it looks so much older than the Hancock and Mihawk ones did. Like Kuma to the Pacifistas, he must be a prototype, or at least the first production model of the Seraphim. But that would mean these things can actually age and grow and mature, which is seemingly unlike their first-generation counterparts.
There's a lot of lore and information to come in this arc, about Vegapunk, about the Seraphim, and about Devil Fruits and secrets of the world. I'm getting the vibe of something a little like Zou, a short arc with a ton of exposition and no real traditional final boss fight. Wherever it goes, this arc already has me in love with its setting and fascinated by its main supporting character in just a couple of chapters. I'm so excited to see where it all goes next.

It helps that the Straw Hats and Bonney are being allowed to actually soak in their surroundings and not necessarily having to rush through things while discovering things along the way.
-
@electricmastro It's that new arc feeling. Act One of Wano had it in spades, but even the scene shift to Onigashima wasn't enough for mid-arc second dose. I've missed these scenes over the past four years.

The Japanese version hasn't fixed it yet, so the translator doesn't know which way to go if they haven't been given explicit instructions.
Is it a dialogue mistake or an art mistake? Dialogue is easy to fix but it if needs to be an art change that won't be until the trade.
It'd be bad if they fixed it one way then it turned out they needed to actually do it the other.
Remember, Oda is a guy who, when the timeskip first started, put Zoro's scar on the wrong eye. He makes art goofs.
-
@Robby Yeah, I wouldn't expect Viz to take action without instruction, just recalling that things like this have been caught quick enough for them to change it for their release (relative to what was in the spoilers and scans) in the past.
This one's a big deal if it's an art change. The 06 on Atlas's body is simple enough, but the hair curls and boots with additional sixes would take some actual redesigning if she's meant to be 05. Way more than just fixing a scar.
-
What about the lack of lunarian fire? Another mistake or it being off is actually a thing? Place your bets!
-
I just thought Kuma was to awkwardly tall that you couldn’t see the fire
-
@theackwardstation
Glad to have clarification, very surprised that's the answer though. How soon will we start seeing a revised design, I wonder. There are Vinsmokes with fewer sixes on their bodies than this!
Though you'd really only have to change the boots to make it work, I think (obviously not counting the 06 on her clothes). Without the existing number association, the hair swirls are just swirls.
-
@danie I assume it works for the Seraphim the way it did for King. That, or its absence is part of the reason Cipher Pol are returning this one.

It's... only a 6 from that angle. In other shots walking the other way so you see the other boot it's mirrored so that its a lowercase "d" rather than a "6".
It's just a boot adornment, not a theme. You're reading too much into it.
-
@Robby I usually am haha. Just a weird coincidence there seem to be so many of them on a character wrongly labelled 06. Maybe that's how Oda managed to confuse himself into putting the wrong number on the outfit.

It's been officially confirmed by Oda that Atlas is Punk 05, not 06.
Oda also mentioned that Seraphim Kuma's hair color is white, not black.
So is Punk 06 Atlas or Wrath then?
-
I can’t see this thread when I’m logged in, why?.
-
@Captain-M I thought King's fire was only off when he moved at high speed to attack. Am I remembering it wrong?

Punk 06 would be "York The Greed". They have yet to be introduced.
-
@danie Skimming back over the fight, there's definitely panels of him lacking the fire while just talking or making a slow, dramatic approach. It needs to be switched off for high speed mode, but it seems like he can leave it off even while not in motion.
-
So wait then, the satellites meant to be containers with parts of Vegapunk's mind inserted into them, or are they just representations meant to mirror parts of his mind?
-
Oda tried to fool us that Brulee and Cracker are going after Ichiji and Reiju.
But looks like they are going after Aokiji and Shilliew...
-
Egghead looks like if it wanted to launch into space, it could.
Didn't notice the dent in the floor of the cover til now.
Most satellites have a power source and antenna. The 3 shown so far all have an antenna on the left side of their head. Is that a tail after the gloves was used by Atlas? VP might use some Mink traits here? Probably gave each of them task to do and they can possibly evolve from there while communicating with each other.

If Blackbeard is invading Big Mom's territory, then it seems it's only a matter of time he invades Kaido's as well.

You know, I keep wondering what kind of effect a new perspective would have on Lucci. We know he believes in justice and necessary evil, but we also know he detests weakness. So what happens after seeing that supposed greater justice basically serves privileged weaklings such as Celestials?
Possible character growth!?
We've seen characters with similar or even worse alignment become allies.
Also wonder who else is going to drop in on the party.
-
His CP9 boss was already a weakling so does it change much ? As long as his job makes him fight strong people I don't think he really cares
-
@Kdom but Spandam was a pawn like he himself was. Then he gets a promotion, discovers all kinds of dirt and witnesses Celestials first hand. Doubt Oda would have him express doubts for no reason.
Like I said, it's not like we didn't have former villains becoming allies, even for short term.
