Aaaaand I'm back! What a shiny new site, looking good. I've missed having an actual forum around, as opposed to commenting on articles on various sites where discussions have a shelf like of like, a few hours tops.
Now, to try and restrain myself so that I won't spend too much time on pent-up critical analysis.

Nothing happens when I hover over the default triangle banner. I'm using Firefox on a desktop.

I think when I first got whatever color translators get I started bugging Brennen everyday incessantly about cooler colors I wanted and he finally just combined them all to shut me up.
That and, y'know, acknowledgement of greatness, excellent forum contribution, beauty, etc.

So dumb question, but how can I do what used to be "Advanced" posts on the new forum? If I quote reply or edit an existing post I get the usual options and preview, but I can't figure out a way to get that straight away, before the post is made. Does that make sense?

Old forum would merge posts. New one does not seem to do so. I've been trying to edit my posts to avoid double posting, but it's kinda bothersome in mobile platforms.

I haven't spoken to the others about it so this is just what I think. There isn't anything on the horizon about auto-merging double post functionality within the open source community.
Until/if there is, I wouldn't worry about it if it happens once in a while especially if they're separate thoughts, or in your case an annoying experience on mobile, but I'd go on to keep encouraging the edit and teaching the use of the non-quick reply to be able to quote multiple people easier. Like in this case, clicking on Quote on both you and Artemis while the reply pane was up was painless on desktop. (unintentional pun)
I think back in the day the functionality was conceived because because people didn't know how to edit, or were posting one-liners right after the other like a chatroom.
In some ways it's like this is some weird hybrid of reddit and discord mixed together where there isn't anything merging double posts together, but I agree it was a nice feature from before...

Recent does work - I'm using pagination. Didn't see it beforehand.
But recent only covers specific threads. Is there a way to go the first unread post in a random topic whenever I browse through some subforum?

Good to see the place back! I'm glad you guys took the effort to actually bring forums back, considering how many other forums have been shut down in favor of other services like Discord. I prefer forums like this for chatting with large groups of random people and it's easier to keep track of posts and not miss anything important.
I need to see about getting a pic uploaded again. Don't currently have my usual avatar images handy on this laptop so I'll have to do something about that. Been many years since I was last at Arlong Park so no surprise mine wasn't one of the ones mentioned to have been transferred over.

Question about this new forum. How would we actually bring thread title requests/suggestions before the mods? Before we could use the report button but that one seems to be gone. And I don't want to press a "flag" button without really knowing what it does.

Even on the old forum, flagging or reporting a post was reserved for actual problems requiring moderator attention. That is of course still true. Definitely flag it if the title is offensive or something like that, but otherwise it's not an appropriate use of that feature.
Generally speaking, thread titles should not be changing, unless there was a mistake when the thread was originally created or some other compelling reason to update it for clarity etc. In such a case the mods can be contacted directly if needed, and it can also be discussed within the thread if appropriate. I know that long ago it was relatively common to constantly update titles with jokes or whatnot but that practice is mostly gone for a few different reasons so please don't contact the staff for suggestions of that sort.
