Chapter 967: Roger's Adventure

This time I really have figured out what One Piece is. So in Japanese it is literally spelled out phonetically as ワンピース. It actually has an English name written to sound the same in Japanese for anyone who doesn't know.
One becomes ワン, but ワン is also the sound a dog makes in Japanese. Wan-wan is like woof-woof.
Piece becomes ピース, but that is also the same way to phonetically write Peace.
So the whole time it was just a pun meaning "Puppy-sounds Peace" and the final island is full of puppies which of course brings peace to whoever goes to puppy island. We're all getting puppies!

It's interesting, because as a Hungarian, this isn't really an issue for me. "A" and "I" together don't really pronounce any other sounds.
No kidding. Always interesting what sounds other languages do or don't have. Just another point going to show how there's no answer to this kind of thing that could possible please everyone.
Obviously this isn't noticeable in Japanese because they use kanji for the admiral epithets but when spelled out in English Kuzan is one letter away from Kazan which means volcano…but he doesn't have the magma fruit!
And the only way to solve the admiral problem is to give them pokemon names that combine those words.
Yellkey, Bleasant, and Rog. Also Grebull and Purpger.
Wasn't Grebull that guy Caribou was mistaken for? Maybe you're onto something here…
Purpger though

I feel like that kind of thing wouldn't work as well for One Piece because it doesn't take itself that seriously to begin with. That makes it inherently hard to parody. Same reason that even in the golden age of that kind of thing no abridged series ever really took off (save for None Piece's bombastic surrealism being kind of memorable I guess)
tbh the old WanPiss comics that went around /a/ and tumblr a while back (apparently like seven years ago no, fuck I'm getting old) were always my favourite OP spoof. From the Nedroid redraws to the actual story ones, these were always solid gold.

4kids tried that a few times.

Guys if u want debate about the name of a char they still use same word on the kanji/hiragana/katakana… Use it and problem solved..

I wonder how will Oda go with the Laugh Tale thing in the future. Given the unconventional writing, it seems he didn't even want Japanese readers to have an idea of the real signification. But is that the same for the people in One Piece world ?
For One Piece translators, it would be easier if the meaning had been lost in time so that people from Roger crew call it Laugh Tale while others continue to call it Raftel -

If Laugh Tale becomes a secret that only the Roger pirates know. Not even Shanks and Buggy know it probably

I’d be okay with this.

Unfortunately, Crocus told the Straw Hats about the existence of "Raftel" when explaining the Grand Line to them.

Nah, Crocus just wouldn't have known for sure at the time the crew was ready for the secret. The real hole in this headcannon is Roger himself using Raftel during Whitebeard's Marineford flashback. In the middle of an offer to tell Whitebeard how to get there. During a conversation where he went out of his way to correct other public misconceptions such as being called "Gold Roger." There's not really any getting around that one.
-
Am I wrong when I say that The One Piece wasn't ever mentioned by name in this flashback? Have we seen anyone mention a treasure called One Piece before Roger's execution, or is it like Laugh Tale?
Even in this chapter the news don't mention One Piece.

Roger must have named it that.

It was invented by some random dude who was watching Roger´s execution
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Chapter wasn't that hot in my opinion.
I mean not bad at all. But a pretty standard info dump chapter.
Depends on how much you empathize with Roger and his adventure spirit i guess. Seeing him laugh like that upon seeing the treasure we have been waiting for to see for such a long time and that reaction, and then thinking about his decision to basically humiliate himself to literal death, so that the next generations might get inspired enough to look for the treasure, for me it´s emotional.

I had that thought, but thinking about it now, that dude doesn't even exist in the manga, so that scene is not where the name is introduced.
! Maybe One Piece isn't real.

Nah that was a joke, albeit a very good scene, which unfortunately suggests Roger never actually planned to talk about his treasure, which we all know is not true.
I think Oda might purposely constrict the usage considering, as Robby suggested somewhere in this thread, One Piece might suggest the unification of the world, which the World Government divided, and also the resulting peace, with the same pronunciation won peace. So yeah, i do think Joy Boy probably named it as such.
-
They actually did that at first in the German translation, Aokiji was Blauer Fasan (Blue Pheasant) and Akaini was Roter Hund (Red Dog). They kept that up throughout Water 7 and Enies Lobby, but changed it once Kizaru started appearing in the story, I guess because his name sounded too silly translated. Plus that was also around the time they changed the translators of the German manga and started trying to be a little closer to the original and less 'creative' in their translation. I do think they should have kept translating those names, because it's really jarring for anybody that doesn't know Japanese when a new admiral is introduced with two different names. It's just confusing when a character has a Japanes name and also a Japanese title that he is often referred to with.
While I am glad that they switched those names to Japanese, and generally like the current translator (who took over after Enies Lobby and was a vast improvement), the thing that really annoys me is that they keep "busoshoku", "haoushoku" etc. untranslated and never bothered explaining what those words mean.
-
Anyone else remembers those translations parody from CCC?
You know, the one with the Boogie-Loving Rookie, Bolomeo.
Yeah I remember that, but it seems he deleted it over the years. Shame!

I'd go a step forward and say if one misses the intended emotional meaning of Roger finally locking at Raftel, one is losing too the route of the whole story given that most of what Oda will write and draw from now on will be done to make us, readers, laugh as Roger did. That'd be a point we have to cross. Well I guess
-
Ya'll are quite deep huh.
-
Super deep. And soon we will be deep in Oden soup. Knee-deep!

Im not deep, i only want to laugh

Man you guys are talented in ridiculing stuff

Luffy is after One Piece because his jigsaw puzzle only needs one final piece.
Zoro would be a Zorro parody.
Nami would speak in an Irish accent and generally be a walking Irish joke.
Usopp would speak to an invisible cricket friend because he thinks he's Pinocchio.
Chopper would act like Rudolph's jealous cousin who resents his position as Santa's lead reindeer and lover.
Robin would be the resident 4th wall breaker.
Franky would be a walking 'Murica joke despite being secretly Mexican.
Brook is actually not a skeleton, just a starving hobo.
-

It's an illness. They used to call it jerk disease.
It can happen when you've been here enough to become a jaded ass.
Some people just have an immunity to jerk disease tho. The nice walkers.
-
So the nice walkers and the jaded asses (jasses for short) together make for a balanced community?
-
Nice Walkers is too close to Night Walkers and some Night Walkers do have a nicely bejeweled jaded ass.
-
If Gordon Ramsay went to the Baratie to try the food, how would it go?

How was one piece pictured in gintama ? I dont follow that one although i read the beginning of the story and along its serialization i know that the show was full of parodies and gags.

I like how you didn’t bother with Sanji because at this point he’s already a gag dub character.

What do you guys think, two more chapters of flashbacks and then we get to the fights?
-
1 more flashback chapter should be fine.
-
Hopefully, I'm really looking forward to seeing the numbers and finally getting to some fights
-
-
I'd go with 3 minimum myself.
-
three, take it or leave it.
Each chapter has been the cliffnote of a phase. I imagine the last phase to be ruling Wano with the last 3-5 pages being the overtaking and him getting boiled.
-
2 or 3 for me. Oden is nit to Wano yet and he needs to say goodbye to Roger and Whitebeard crews
Also we need to know how Orochi and Kaido teamed up -
I'd say one chapter would be rushing it but it feels like this entire flashback has been basically rushing it from the get go so…..
-
@uniaka:
Post TS Zoro becomes the most boring character in the crew, and I would dare say most of the manga. None, nothing.
Viz still calls him zolo instead of Zoro. Everyone îs triggered
Lol..this made me laugh..too many posts dedicated for a character not even in the chapter..
-

Jasses are like mosquitoes. You don't have to like 'em but they fill a function in nature.
Nice Walkers is too close to Night Walkers and some Night Walkers do have a nicely bejeweled jaded ass.
Keep it up son and you'll catch the jerk disease too.
Join the fold, we can go out and poke lazy jabs at something someone put a lot of thought into.
2 or 3 for me. Oden is nit to Wano yet and he needs to say goodbye to Roger and Whitebeard crews
Also we need to know how Orochi and Kaido teamed upPage one - bye roger!
Page two - i now work with Kaido
Page three - ah i'm boiling
The rest can be about people feeling bad about his boiling.
Lol..this made me laugh..too many posts dedicated for a character not even in the chapter..
Don't complain about activity.
Unless you prefer a dead section.
-
Can we please have a full chapter of boiling (to be adapted as 2 and a half episodes of boiling)?
-

There is usually a next step after becoming a jaded ass though, the path to the ubermensch

Sounds like what happend to the sea.
If i start rambling about becoming the new buddha please save me.
I don't want to end up like the sea.

"Finally some fucking good food"

The in-betweens in every chapter sometimes are a bit rushed yes but the beginnings and the cliffhangers are pretty standard for Oda pacing-structure wise. I'm interested to see how he's gonna structure the upcoming chapters. I'd say 2.5-3.5 chapters for the end of the flashback

But "Laugh Tale" is a secret personal to the Roger pirates. The meaning doesnt matter in the grand scheme of things. In fact, the SHs never finding out about the true meaning would lead to an even stronger paralleling (or contrasting) scene when Luffy witnesses the treasure just like Roger. Or is it that everyone in the world already assumes that Rafuteru=Laugh Tale?
-
I believe next chapter we will see Oden returning to Wano and finding out what happened to the country. The following chapter we will probably see the end of the flashback with his death. So i would say 2 chapters for the flashback to end. Then we will have other 3-4 chapters at max. where we see the Strawhats arriving to Onigashima in some ways, and preparing theirselves to attack the people at the party. Then Act 3 should end. It depends if Oda wants to close Act 3 before the Strawhats attack,or if he wants to end it right after they give the first attack,or with their initial lose. We'll see. But Act 3 probably wont last very long.
-
We could get the end of Oden now, but I feel Oda might switch to current story first and then go back to Orochi/Kaido team up and Odens demise later in the final battle to give more emotional impact to everybody involved especially the scabbards and Odens kids. But he certainly could finish it all now so we have all the motivation going into the battles from the start, who knows. xD
