That was a good ass chapter. The pacing is breezy, but I'm fine with it at the moment. Wish I could see more of Neko and Inuarushi doing stuff, though.
Now the flashback is going to enter the Roger Pirates phase you won't hear me complaining a single time if Oda decides to slow things to nearly a stop. So much I want to see from there, and not all of them including Buggy. High chances we might even see Rouge.
This WB flashback makes me sad because when it comes to the anime, Whitebeard will have a new voice, since the original died, which sucks. That voice was perfect.
With the flashback at least, they'll be able to pad it out a bit more via fillers i reckon which i wouldn't mind too much.

New Kizaru will break my heart even more. Impossible to replace that guy in any satisfying manner.
Man the coverstory is getting weirder and weirder. And I admit I misjudged the Hoover lady, apparently she's forced to rape people due to some magic bullets?
The cover story is getting way too Random.
Its nice getting to chill with Whitebeard.
I will say I do not care much for Roger so Im not in a hurry to get to that part of Oden's travel. Especially since there's a good chance it will be world building instead of character driven.

we've already heard new Kizaru.
Just noticed that in the official version it was Whitebeard who gave a treasure chest to Oden and not the other way around.
I respect Oda's work ethic and all, but man, two breaks between three chapters each is a hard pill to swallow.
Oh so that's why there was one more chapter left in the volume. Yeah, that's the right place to end it.
The question raised by the cover story now is this: is Kuween doing what she was doing because of who she is as a person, or is it because she was hit with a kiss kiss cootie already? Perhaps we'll get a bit where the Germ Pirates come after her and she's all "I already always want to kiss people," cue Enel face fault.
The figure of ten or twenty million islands in the world is a curious bit of worldbuilding, assuming Marco's info is accurate. According to Google, the real world only has about 2,000 in its oceans (not counting ones in lakes or other inland areas of water because they get too hard to define), which is a huge difference, even accounting for the extra space the One Piece world has without any major continents aside from the Redline. I think the only way this works (this and a few other things) is if the One Piece world is significantly larger than earth. That, or Marco's exaggerating to impress Cat and Dog. Or Oda picked some impressive sounding numbers and didn't think through the implications of them. As much as I'd like to be getting a concrete number, the implication is probably just that there are too many islands to count. Wouldn't be much point to Nami's goal if they knew all the islands of the world this long ago.
Still no sign of Sleepy or Frowleibs among the Whitebeard pirates. Come on, Oda, give the Vivre Cards the thing they need to be truly complete!
I really appreciate how Oda makes flashbacks pull double duty in terms of both character and worldbuilding. And the fact that a character as minor in the scheme of things as Izo gets to have this much backstory. I wonder if Oda is setting him up to perhaps change Marco's mind about coming Wano in the present.
Oden's trial is a good bit of storytelling. A good ordeal for the character, though Whitebeard seems to have made it through a lot of different biomes in just three days. That's the Grand Line for you.
And we have Toki. Aaaaaand she looks exactly like her daughter. Not just family resemblance, they're prettymuch the same. Which is par for the course honestly. In another series, I might have taken this as a clue that perhaps there was something up with the two identical women never explicitly confirmed to both be Hyori - wouldn't that be a twist? But here I'm inclined to say it's just Oda being Oda.
I like the lack of clarity over why Oden let go of the chain. Did he actually get too injured and slip away, or did he actually hear Toki screaming and let go so he could help. I read the latter as Whitebeard giving him the benefit of the doubt, but it could really go either way. (sure he talks about hearing her voice as he comes ashore, but that could easily have happened as he was washing up on the beach. The ship seems pretty far from land when we see the crew realising he's not there anymore.)
The adventure panels all look like a lot of fun. Oden trying to climb on the back of a giant koala is my favourite one. Good to know there's a One Piece Australia out there somewhere. (too bad about what's happening to the actual koalas in actual Australia though)
Toki seems to have been born right at the end of the Void Century. We might get some info about it from her, but I'd say this is a sign Oda will be saving the full story for later.
And then we get the Pirate King himself taking an interest. I'm very interested to see how convincing Oden to jump ships ended up working, and why Izo decided not to follow him. It's going to be an interesting few chapters, that's for certain!
Wonder if this flashback will finally reveal whether Roger had a DF or not
I like that we were able to see Oden's pursuit of adventure bring out some sense of humility from him. Gives him a little depth I think. I am a bit surprised by how similar his mannerisms are to Luffy when it comes to thrill seeking though. Didn't expect to see that much exuberance.
While seeing Gold Roger is cool, i'm still most interested in finding out how Orochi went from being a nobody to becoming ruler of a country and ally of Kaido.
So I think the way this flashback will go is Oden will get to see all the marvels of the outside world and he'll want to open up that gift to the rest of Wano. This will be the motivation for him to open up the borders.
There's also an outside shot that Toki reveals some hard truths about the void century, Wano's role in it, and some other things about "the dawn", and that will act as motivation too.
Don't know if this was discussed already, but in every panel with Toko, there's a small cloud near her face all around the chapter. What could It mean?

She's huffing and puffing in exhaustion.
The new translation emphasizes the surprise Oden has to see Toki is wearing Wano-style clothes. Maybe she is from Ancient Wano, and that's why she felt comfortable living there in the present.
I'm almost sure we'll see very little of Roger's journey. Like Luffy said to Rayleigh, what's the fun in adventure if you know what you'll find
Wano certanly had a role in the Void Century since they were the ones that wrote the Poneglyphs, but i'm interested on how did Toki managed to get her hands on the Toki-Toki-no-Mi and why is she so adamant in returning to Wano? I mean she certanly knows that nobody from her time still lives so she must know something is in Wano that nobody else knows about it so she must've told Oden about it.
Gimme them void century deets Toki, even if it will be just hints.
Unless Oden temporarily returned to Wano with Toki, which seems unlikely, it means that she gave birth to Momo and Hiyori during this adventure, which I didn't expect at all, simply because I thought it would be way too dangerous. Imagine one year old Momonosuke at the Battle of Edd War.
Also does that mean Toki, Momo and Hiyori were on Laugh Tale as well or was that actually too dangerous and Oden dropped them off somewhere safe until his return? Maybe the reason Cat and Dog didn't travel to Laugh Tale was because they were assigned to stay with them? Maybe on Zou, since we know the Roger Pirates were there one year before they reached Laugh Tale. I'm curious to find out how exactly all of this played out.
Someone on reddit pointed out that on the panel where Oden is on fire we can see what is likely Marco in his phoenix form:
[HIDE]
[/HIDE]
That would explain how he managed to get Izo on the ship without pulling up the chain.
As expected, flashback will last 'till january. But I dont see Act III ending along with it.

2000 islands on our planet? What kind of georgraphy did you study, just with the nordic european countries and malayasia + indonesia we should be around 100.000 islands.
Theres probably a million islands on our planet, its really hard to pint point because the majority come and go due to tectonic activities.

google says 2000 islands…
I wonder if the reason why Neko and Inu started to not talk to each other was Buggy's and Shanks's argument about which pole is colder.

The Philippines is literally made up of over 7000 islands. Japan has more than 6000. Google is leading you astray, friend. I'm assuming you got your info from this article? It says there are at least 2000 islands in the oceans, and then also goes on to say "Several islands around the world remain uninhabited. It is estimated that only 11,000 of the millions of islands have permanent residents"
google says 2000 islands…
If that's true google is drunk.
There are like 11000 permanently inhabited islands on the planet.
My country alone has 1246 islands, islets and rocks.
I wonder if the reason why Neko and Inu started to not talk to each other was Buggy's and Shanks's argument about which pole is colder.
When Kinemon was telling Oden's story to the strawhats he mentioned that they fought on the way to Oden's castle to save Toki and Momo. Not saying that was the origin of the fight, but could have been the turning point of them not speaking anymorr. Like: they blame each other for wasting time and not saving the family.
I always took it that they had different strategy on how to save Oden and blame the other for not supporting their plan and letting the master die.

I think he defined islands here by the number of land surrounded by oceans. That number sounds about right.
But if we take into account the lands surrounded by other water bodies such as seas, lakes, rivers, etc. it would be millions.
You're right, no one can make an estimate because of tides and other tectonic activities.

Caribbean :The Caribbean archipelago encompasses more than 7,000 individual islands in an approximately 1-million-square-mile region. Philippines: The Philippines has more islands than it did before. The National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA) announced that the country has 7,641 islands instead of 7,107 Indonesia: However, according to earlier survey in 2002 by National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN), the Indonesian archipelago has 18,307 islands, and according to the CIA World Factbook, there are 17,508 islands. Norway: Norway has over 50,000 islands and a coastline of 83,000kilometres (because of the large number of islands and rugged coastline). Norway's highest mountain is Galdhøpiggen at 2,469 metres. Swdeden : In total there are 221,831 islands in Sweden with an area of at least 25 m², around 1000 of which are inhabited. Finland: Finland has some **180000 (yes one hundred and **eighty thousand!) lakes and almost as many islands! Just the Archipelago sea alone has some 40000 islands!
Here you have around half a million islands already. Obviously if we are talking about habitable islands the whole thing changes, Alabasta and Wano seem to be huge. Whereas dressrosa is very tiny.
IF you count islands like dressrosa, then we are easily in the millions.
Note that these are only 3 countries. Italy alone has 450 which ALL are habitated.****
Act 3 will most likely be the longest of the five.
Not according the Kabuki style Oda is following, apparently
Am I nuts or did Roger's eyes and face have a vague resemblance to Dragon?
About the islands, yes you guys are of course right, just pointing out that google says otherwise but they clearly have some other sort of defintion for the worlds islands lol
Neko and Inu have an open line of communication with Marco. I don't recall Neko or Inu making any moves during the years. So, it's ok to assume the possibility of WB, Izo and the rest being in the know.

As other posters speculated, I really just took the top google result at face value. I try to be accurate but I do bang my posts out fairly quickly. Very education response here though. Those numbers are much higher than I would ever have expected, even considering how many of those are probably or definitely uninhabited, too small to ever be inhabited, or not worth counting due to being in lakes or other inland bodies of water.
I think it's fair to say people in One Piece's world consider most landmasses that aren't the Redline to be islands, even the big ones like Alabasta, and are probably collapsing most archipelagos into single locations. I do stand by my feeling that One Piece's world is larger than our earth though. It's not just the island numbers, it's things like the number of routes that fit in the Grand Line compared to how thin it appears on the map. It's things like how Alabasta appears to be in spite of its size when we see it from above in chapter 210. But I also strongly have the feeling that, like the phases of the moon, I care about this more than Oda does
i think you can reach millions only if you take into account inlets and rocks which according to UN sea convention are not islands. The big difference is that only islands get an EEZ ( exclusive economic zone) not inlets and rocks.
The EEZ is extremely important in our world since it creates a lot of soverenity conflicts ( a quite famous one is the conflict in South China Sea and the Nine Dots line)
A more funny fact of the EEZ is that France has the second largest one in the world which is a fact even most French don't know.
I doubt one piece world has such a concept so probably inlets and rocks are counted to achieve the 20 millions
I took Marco's worlds to be him throwing a big number instead of saying something necessarily accurate. Also I find it weird weird minks know so little about the world. I understand for Wano but I didnt picture the same with minks. I hope its just because they're kids.
It was the same with Carrot, she was expecting the whole trip to WCI and then to Wano to take only a few hours. Zou is just as secluded as Wano.
I mean I can't not comment on this chapter, we're seeing Primebeard details, something very long awaited for many fans.
So like a lot of people, this chapter made me come around to Oden a lot more. I feel like we got to see a lot of different sides to him this chapter and he's very Luffy-like. Loved the worldbuilding this chapter from Marco and the adventures.
There's something slightly somber about that Roger panel at the end. Again, that's young/prime Roger, just casually shown, and it really shows me that Oda's starting to turn over some major stones in the series. But seriously that's one handsome Roger, looks just like an older Ace.
I found the "adventure of a lifetime, brother!" panel from Whitebeard amazing.
Toki being from ~around~ 800 years ago was expected and awesome. We will without a doubt get some clue about the Void Century from her, especially since she wants to bring the dawn, and her dawn may be closer to the "Dawn of the World" than some think.

He is basically Ace with a moustache.

Yes we will probably get more details regarding void century in a few chapters. Can't wait.
Maybe someone has pointed out this already but the crescent moon on Tokis outfit seems quite similar to the ankle tattoo representing the kozuki followers. I wonder what the story about that mark is.

Plot twist: she is Oden's great-great-great-great-great- …. -great-great-aunt
He is basically Ace with a moustache.
That sickness he got aged him like 20 years in a 3 years or span.
Last night I had a dream I was reading a One Piece magazine. It started out in a flashback, showing some history with Rayleigh and Kizaru and them fighting in the past. Then it went to the Marine HQ in the present. Sengoku and Akainu were giving a presentation, and all of a sudden Sengoku asked the Marines if they wanted to hear a joke, and Sengoku and Akainu's expressions changed to childlike smiles. The Marines were confused at first but then cheered. Sengoku asked "Why are Kaido's crew all feral beasts?" then after a panel of silence answered "Because we expect you all to be justice fine!"
The pun was justice/just as, I guess Sengoku was saying he expects the Marines to be as righteous as Kaido's crew is beastly.
That sickness he got aged him like 20 years in a 3 years or span.
What are the chances that said "Sickness" wasn't natural and was created by the World Government to kill him before he became too powerful?
I really hope not.
What are the chances that said "Sickness" wasn't natural and was created by the World Government to kill him before he became too powerful?
If there is a possibility of this, it sure backfired on them.
