lmao Drake got fucking snubbed.
One Piece Opening 22: "Over The Top" by Hiroshi Kitadani (7th July)

…Did they just confirm the theories that
! Kyoshiro is Denjiro? He shows up in the Akazaya/Scabbards montage next to Shutenmaru.
I think they just did it indeed. Regrettable.
-
I think i saw isamu takara do the sanji transformation part not sure.
nice opening nice change of pace lol damn a lot of spoilers
-
The most egregious and gratuitous spoiler is Yasu.
I expected Kaido and Sanji, but jeez.
-
I think i saw isamu takara do the sanji transformation part not sure.
Takara didn't work on the opening. FYI the animators were:
- Yong-ce Tu (villain lineup, Kid and Hawkins, a decent chunk of Luffy vs. Kaido)
- Tetsuro Tsuyuki
- Takashi Kojima (Luffy struggling in chains
- Katsumi Ishizuka (Boundman punching Kaido at the end)
- Kenji Yokoyama
- Yoshihiko Umakoshi (most likely Law's attack)
- Masami Mori (Straw Hat showcase while Luffy, Zoro, and Tama ride the koma)
- Hiromi Ishigami (Zoro jumping and slashing the screen immediately afterward)
- Midori Matsuda
- Akiko Sugizono
- Meng Sun
- Ting-mu Yang
- Jun-wen Tang
Also, personal opinion and all but having to showcase complete scrubs like Holdem and Speed alongside the Calamities is kind of an indictment on the quality of the villains so far this arc.
-
The Yasu spoiler is indeed a major one, but actually, I think the most egregious spoiler is, as MrBits and theackwardstation pointed out,
! seemingly confirming that Kyoshiro is Denjiro. Since, if it's true, that would spoil something that hasn't even been confirmed in the manga yet.
Also, on that note,
! the fact that he's shown in the same panel as Ashura Doji (the one Scabbard member–that we know of, anyway--who isn't totally on board with this rebellion plan of Kin'emon's) makes me wonder if Kyoshiro/Denjiro will be like him and unlike Kawamatsu and be more bitter about the situation than anything else. I doubt he's really on Orochi's side or anything, but it wouldn't completely surprise me if he were like Ashura was as Shutenmaru where he's more just on his own side.

Thanks for that.
Lol holdem and speed part XD not a fan in the arc in the manga but PAGE 1 is darn cool hope he gets more shine.

I wouldn't read anything into the Kyoshiro bit. I'd say raid suit Sanji is the biggest spoiler here since it shows he gives in and uses it, and shows what it looks like. Yasui thing is hardly a spoiler since with no knowledge that bit doesn't mean anything.
-
Sanji
Great opening

…I think they did.

They also confirmed that
! Advanced CoA will look like Goku's Kaioken.

! I mean, that's clearly a nine red scabbards montage. Even Kawamatsu is there in silhouette form, but not Denjiro. If this isn't a spoiler, then it's an extremely confusing choice.
-
lol I didn't notice Ludicolo there. That is weird then.
-
They most definitely even spoiled manga readers, lol.
-
This is the first opening we never see the crew's ship.
It's about time.
-
Quite the enjoyable song. Opening overall is probably better than Wano deserves so far, but maybe the anime can improve things. I don't have an eye for art/animation, so I wonder how long it'll take for the new style to stop feeling weird to me.
Do find it mildly amusing that Momo barely gets a glancing clip despite how important he's supposed to be, and that 2 of the more pathetic headliners get featured instead of Drake and Page one.
-
I can't stop myself from listening to this opening again and again. It's been forever since an opening has had that effect on me.

1. We Are!
2. Over the Top
3. We Go!
22. We Can! -
[Creditless Version] One Piece Opening 22 - Over The Top by Hiroshi Kitadani

Watch it a couple times to get used to the song, pretty good, not what I was expecting when it came to a old school Japan arc but very We Go-ish. Lively and pretty upbeat. Visual wise, well happy they still kept the focus on the story arc as they did with Superpowers, but it feels a little too fast for my liking and a majority of it is just a lot of head turns to the camera, also not a fan of showing a clip from the episode, feels like it's trying to pad the opening to me. Likewise I think they're really jumping the gun on a few areas when it come to showcasing plot points. At the time of the airing a lot of them had just happened in the manga. I mean..really? Considering the pace the anime goes, you'd think they'd hold off a bit on some of the more spoiler heavy moments. Surprised Drake and Page One didn't get a showcase during the Beast Pirates roll call too. Hmm. Did like the the hypothetical battle of Luffy and Kadio though, very dynamic and stylized and the centerpiece of the whole opening, so not bad there.
Overall, half and half for me. Love the song, good animation, but could've been better paced a bit. Still don't hate it though, just a bit slightly above average at best.

What two? I was unaware that there were multiple versions of this floating around.

There's the broadcast which has credits and lyrics, stream which is just credits, and the official OP youtube channel preview which has a logo on the top right. I merged the stream and youtube version.

Anime has a habit of giving spoilers ahead of the manga. One example I could think of was when they show boin archipelago as a carnivorous island long before it was revealed in the manga. Another one was showing humandrills animal like shadows in the anime fighting zoro while it was only shown to one human like shadow in the manga cover page.
I wouldn't be surprise if denjiro turns out to be kyoshiro all along. Only two remaining choices among the named character so far in the manga to be denjiro the other one would be gyukimaru
-
The obligatory last boss vs protagonist montage dropped it a notch for me.
Song is okay, good visuals. Felt like a callback to old shounen openings or like how many generic shounen opening can we put in one opening.
Nothing over the top (except for the shitload of spoilers) and felt like it's just going to be a not as memorable but not bad kind of op. -

For those who haven't seen them already, here're those two impact frames that flash by for half a second:

Man, I’ve listened to it a dozen times by now and this is my favorite theme song since Kokoro no Chizu.
-
Just to list it all out there, this is the first ever opening that
- doesn't show the crew's ship (Going Merry or Thousand Sunny)
- doesn't show any of the Straw Hats wearing their standard outfits at any point
- doesn't show any of the Straw Hats sailing, goofing off, shopping, playing, fishing, or any other leisurely activities
- doesn't show any other location besides the setting of the current arc
- doesn't show any character that isn't connected or doesn't appear in the current arc
Basically, Over The Top removed most of the generic, by-the-books stuff that has been weighing down the openings and that's why it feels so fresh for One Piece.
-
I'm wondering if this opening maybe gives us a hint that the Heart Pirates as well as Gyukimaru will get some additional scenes showcasing more of the former getting captured and the latter getting chased down by Zoro. It just feels a little weird otherwise to have them in the opening, but not Drake, Killer, Caribou, Big Mom, Toko, Hyougoro, Tenguyama or the Oniwabanshu.

It's almost as if the staff have listened to this forum….
-
I agree with all of the above points regarding the new opening. It's fresh, I like the song, and I like that it's FINALLY different from the cookie-cutter openings we'd been getting for the past couple of years.
-
Visuals are fantastic. Song is not that good…lame even. Still baffled about Kyoshiro whom is shown among the 8 known scabbards. Is he the 9th one? It would make sense
-
It's too early for me to comment on the song I guess. Typically, I have disliked most of the songs when they're new and like them by the time they're done, with a couple of exceptions where I loved them at the start (We Are, Kokoro No Chizu) and some that never grew on me. (I couldn't tell you their names unless I looked them up). There are probably 4 or 5 songs that get stuck in my head randomly even if I haven't heard them in years.
-
I didn't really have any problem with the song itself, but I do think Kitadani could have made more use of the "One dream, one wish" hook. It's an awesome hook and it could have helped space out the opening's contents better.
-
For those complaining about spoilers, as with most anime openings, its only spoilers if you already have context. Otherwise its just flashy images and montages of regular characters, you don't know what is made up for the opening and what is an upcoming scene.
Just look at all those opening where Luffy fights Blackbeard or the crew take on the admirals or how Mihawk and Shanks used to be in every opening, for instance.
Basically the most jarring one is "why is that guy on a cross" and even that is mostly context making it stronger.
My favorite such spoiler is one of the Slayers openings where they blatantly show off the surprise twist villain but before you have context for that its just a random character in a montage to a beat match that goes right by, and the opening also gives away major spoilers for the end of the season, including that a character from last season will return who doesn't show up until like 3 episodes from the end. and you just have no idea. It also includes flashes of things like Lina's sister and series endbosses that never even appear in the actual show. But its just flashy images, you don't really process it.
The exception to this is of course OP opening three which blatantly shows off Robin with the crew at length and there's just no way to mistake what that means. I remember at the time going "what the heck is SHE doing there?". So it spoiled the surprise but it did build up a question, and it was only like 2 episodes in advance. Still, they seemed to learn their lesson and were super careful about not giving away Franky or Brook after that..

I mean, generally I agree… but the opening makes it pretty obvious that
! Kaidou is a dragon (Spoiler tagged just in case I'm wrong and someone missed it… Though surely others in this thread would have revealed it anyway) which is very much treated like a "Holey sheets, I didn't expect that!" moment when it's revealed in the manga.
-
Eh, he does that suuuuper early in the arc. If that was an act 2 surprise I'd agree but its not held as a surprise for very long.
-
! The sanji thing is still a big spoiler, since that will happen much later in the anime, maybe even 1 year from now. And you don't need any context for it, since it's based on the previous arc.
But is it really spoiler if you don't want to read the manga and only want to see the non canon anime? -
The only reason why it's loaded with spoilers up to Sanji 's part is because Kitadani is a big name and this song will go for more than a year.
Pump some budget into something to justify its length of stay and there's no need to worry about the next one for a looooong time to come.
That and you know, gotta help pander to that guy's rep. -
Over The Top full version (from 6:30 minute).
-
Been enjoying the new episodes so much I hadn't realized that they switched back to the 2-ish minute format for the opening. Really glad they decided to do this, because many of the 2.5 minute openings suffered from excruciatingly bad pacing and felt like they drug on forever.
Also noticed they brought back the old stylized font for the credits, which is a nice touch.

Its been forever since I've done this but I wanted to do a fan translation for old time's sake as I really like the song and finally got around to it. I attempted to make my lyrics a bit different from both the Japanese version and Dave Does Music's already spectacular rendition, so its not quite as to-the-point translation wise and I took some liberties here and there, very first-drafty really.
One Dream. One Wish.
'Round the bend, we'll see the end - Over The Top!
–----
We all set out onto a sea, of unknowns
Through raging waters, stormy nights, and rough days
But you won't ever make it worrying, so you've gotta get up, lets hurry
Rise and shine we've gotta sail faster- sink or swim, together we'll reach there first!
–-----
Do your foes look like they could get the last laugh? It could be that your heart's forgotten its path?
Thats when its time to recall your mission- Start taking steps to reclaim the vision- They call it dumb; I call it ambition
Laugh off adversity, whatever it may be!
–--
You've all got me, I've got you, and now tomorrow's in view
So- keep sailing 'till the sun brings us a brand new day
With new horizons, darkness looms higher, yes- but every step will light our way!Now as we blast right on through, just take a second- won't you, to remember all the trials we've won to show-
We'll blow our foes away, with the strength of a hurricane! Now- we do believe you're in our way!One Dream! One Wish!
_The end is in our sights, and its a knock out!Over the Top!_

I was also compelled to write after a long while too. Here's my version of Over the Top as well. If you guys like it, you can check some more of my stuff in this thread: http://apforums.net/showthread.php?t=49233
**Over the Top (English Version)
One dream
One wish
If you want it all, then go
Over the topSomewhere out there’s a brand new land just waiting
The wind and waves are strong and yet elating
Don’t go letting a thing get in your way
We can make it past everybody
Not much use to sit there and worry
Sink or swim, let’s see how far we can goDo you fear all the foes that have descended?
Where’s the courage on which you once depended?
The choice to run has long been forsaken
The time has come for one more step taken
Stir up some trouble, get your name out there
And when your number’s up, laugh without a careTomorrow’s looking real bright
Just as long as you lead on with your light
Only you can get it polished to a gleaming shine
It’s all within you
Choose to continue
Go! And take us on the trail you’ll blazeJust look how far you have come
Not much further ‘til you reach the horizon
Give all you got to meet your aspirations
Push on through all the pain
Kick up a hurricane
Now! Go show the world who’s number oneOne dream
One wish
Take whatever’s in your way and score a knock-out
