One Piece Opening 22 will debut next 7th July. Tittle is "Over The Top" by Hiroshi Kitadani ("We Are!", "We Go!" or "We can!").

Unpopular opinion: the only song by him I liked was We Are.
Everything else was okay to meh -
Agree with above. We Go was decent IMO but We Can felt uninspired to me, both song-wise and visual-wise. It's only merit for me was lowering my expectations for Hope to blow me away. I'd be more excited for this if We Go was the last opening we heard from Kitadani.
Wano is being set up as a new start for the anime; a new and iconic opening would fit much better than the nostalgia they seem to be going for.
-
Ugh, don't like a Kitadani opening by We Are time. Also, I feel it really unfitting for Wano atmosphere
-
Not sad to see Super Powers go but that opening was kinda starting to grow on me. I feel like I would have enjoyed it if I were a kid watching on Sunday morning.
Hoping this opening is like We Go, less like We Can.
-
Huh. The Super Powers theme didn't last long.
I guess it got the blame for the Reverie Arc having low ratings– rather than the fact that Oda utterly wasted his one chance to do a One Piece arc that was about people other than Luffy and Nami, abandoned the whole thing right away without even telling a single complete story arc for any character or even really advancing the plot and thus the animators were left to scramble and ultimately made weeks and weeks of clip shows that primarily just reused old footage.
It was our one chance to have a Sabo story before he is probably killed just like Ace or have a story on Vivi, the abandoned Straw Hat member, or tell a story about what Koby has been up to for the past 2 years to advance his rank...
Instead the only take-aways are that Luffy's hat is probably magical, there is a secret hidden king in charge of the world government that even the kings don't know about, maybe not all of the Celestial Dragons are totally evil and that there is a secret pre-Roger Pirate King called Locks and Kaido and Linlin were his underlings and he may or may not be appearing again in the story. Everything else was basically just cameos of Luffy's friends and some met and got acquainted, particularly the princesses.
Which is... you know... would be fine for 1-2 episodes worth of story, but the animation team needed to fill out a dozen episodes that basically contained little more than that.
But, you know-- can't blame the source material, got to blame the opening song for the dropping ratings and get a new one.
-
Kitadani does classic anime openings best! We Are and We Go were great. But as said above, We Can was very uninspired…
The Opening 10 We Are remix was very bad, and We Go gets bad rep because it dragged on for so many episodes.
Huh. The Super Powers theme didn't last long.
I guess it got the blame for the Reverie Arc having low ratings– .
Everything you said really doesn't make sense.

Nobody is blaming Super Powers for Reverie's reception. The opening was clearly designed for the latter part of Whole Cake Island, and everyone expected it to get replaced by the time Wano started - as you would typically expect a new arc, especially one as big as Wano, to get a new opening. The reasons Reverie struggled in the anime have nothing to do with the opening.

This is… a weird conclusion to draw.

Everything else was okay to mehThat seems like the majority opinion.
Personally, I was really hoping for a Hironobu Kageyama opening.
-
The thing about We Can! is that Kitadani was strong-armed into doing it because the band Kishidan didn't want to do it without him for some reason. Kitadani's solo openings, We Are and We Go, are top tier One Piece openings.
I can only hope that Over The Top is more unique and specific to Wano.

Jump information in HQ.

What I am getting at is that I feel bad for a group that got to make a theme for One Piece, only for that theme song to only run for a small number of episodes, most of which were clip shows because Oda blew it on what could have been the most different and unique arc in the 20+ year story.
How would you feel if you were tasked to write a theme song for biggest anime in Japan only for it to be run only for clip shows?
-
We Can was a Kishidan song featuring vocals by Kitadani. It's not fair to hold that against him.

"Most of"? I mean admittedly I haven't been keeping up with the anime for the entirety of Whole Cake Island, but I remember Super Powers premiering quite a while back, and the "clip shows" were just the short Reverie arc. Pretty sure Super Powers still got more airtime than Brand New World ever did. And even Brand New World's airtime was fairly standard for other anime.

Super Powers was intended for the final part of Whole Cake Island. It ran for 23 WCI episodes, 12 Reverie, and 2 Wano. It got added onto Reverie since nobody was going to make a Reverie-specific intro, and honestly I'd rather it be Super Powers and let Wano start off fresh. Nobody really has an issue with it, it was always going to be replaced by the next major arc (and when an opening runs into a new major arc, like We Can, it's typically not well-received)
And considering Japan, I think V6 considered it a great honor to create Super Powers regardless of what content it was used for.

I'm still miffed over that. Brand New World was way too awesome to be replaced this quickly.

It used to be my favorite opening at one point. I mean it's since been surpassed by Fight Together, but indeed, Brand New World was pretty great. Yet it ended before the show even got to the fights it was teasing…
-
Super Powers was one of my favorites of recent openings, so definitely gonna miss it, but we were always gonna get a new one at Wano.
We Can is probably my least favorite opening overall, so hopefully it's not too similar to that.
-

Yeah, it may still be my favorite, though I also love Kokoro no Chizu, Fight Together (perfectly captures the emotions at that point the story) and We Go, which seems to be rather disliked by fans on this forum now. Personally, I thought it really displayed the energy of the series well and was a perfect choice for the start of the second part of the story. I guess it kinda outstayed its welcome for some?
-
Yeah I'm not getting disdain for We Go either. That's one of my favs, it was a great follow up to We Are. We Can sucked.
-
I'm also a big fan of We Go. Loved the song and the visuals as well.
-
We Can >>>> We Go

We Go was excellent… for the reunion and maybe like the first half of Fishman Island. It definitely stuck around for far too long, though, and eventually that shot of Hody glaring ominously at the viewer just became a constant reminder of how utterly Toei botched the landing of that arc by seemingly refusing to accept that the New Fishman Pirates were never on Luffy's level and were specifically there to demonstrate how much stronger he and the other Straw Hats had gotten.
…Of course, for anyone watching the simulcast it was even worse, since Hands Up didn't get put on Crunchyroll until way later, thus extending what was already the most overused opening for another year.
But as time has gone on and I've gotten some distance from it's infuriating overuse, I can acknowledge that We Go was, indeed, excellent.
-
Kishidan's Zoku is one of my favorite songs so I was really dissapointed by We Can!.
-
Can’t wait to stop hearing “Super Power.” No, it isn’t the worst theme, but the repetition of the English words is annoying to me.

Is the image is the opening?
Anime only watcher will be mad about KaidoI've never understood this about One Piece openings. I watch with my girlfriend and always have to watch the opening ahead of time to see if it's going to spoil anything, and it always does in the worst way.
-
i really hope that the person who take this image paused at the wrong time because that blue dragon look bad. not the color.
-
Most of the time, it's manga readers that spoil openings, by pointing out what is a spoiler and why.
-
It's not an One Piece exclusive thing. Part of the purpose of openings is to hype viewers up about upcoming events. As long as it's not a massive twist it's not too bad.
They'll never top opening 3 anyway.
-
ah yes opening 3 my favorite spoiler opening.
-
Most of the time, it's manga readers that spoil openings, by pointing out what is a spoiler and why.
I'm going to disagree there. The spoilers are just too blatant for this to be the case. Manga readers don't have to point out things like Luffy and Katakuri fighting in the mirror world when it's right in their face during the opening and the openings have a history of this.

Robin in opening 3 is very obvious too, isn't it?
-
Okay the spoilers are pretty hardcore in this one.
-
-
I have to dock a point for continuing that stupid-ass "insert clips from the actual episode" thing they started with "Super Powers" once the Reverie began (unless they're hiding something but I can't imagine what other than maybe the Big Mom Pirates) but animation-wise that is porn. I can see Yong-ce Tu at the very top of the list, and Masami Mori, Ishizuka, Takashi Kojima, and Hiromi Ishigami in there too. Lots of fodder for sakugabooru in there.
Song seems pretty standard.
-
It's 2 minutes long, not the usual 2:30 min.
-
That was probably one of the most captivating song openings I've ever seen. I was super pumped going into this.
Animation is a little too fast paced for my taste, otherwise thought it was great. Definitely a lot of spoilers, but never cared too much for that. Fight scene at the end is awesome. Would love to have seen this arc on TV as a kid.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
I have to dock a point for continuing that stupid-ass "insert clips from the actual episode" thing they started with "Super Powers" once the Reverie began
Looking on the bright side, the clips are advanced enough that we may be due for a new opening by the time they become out of date.
-
Ohh I like it. Very fun song. Surprised it's shorter than usual, it didn't feel like it. I like the blatant segment where they'll update the montage as the arc goes on.
-
It's 2 minutes long, not the usual 2:30 min.
Interesting point. That's actually the approximate length the openings used to have up until they switched to the 2.5 minute standard (Believe, Towards the Light, and Bon Voyage were all padded out by opening narration, while Map of the Heart and Brand New World managed those lengths without any help.).
-
Great opening, didn’t expect though
! divine thunder to be an actual thunder attack. It makes Kaido one shotting Luffy even crazier
-
Also, at the very end Luffy does the same flip that Goku does at the end of Super's second opening. The composition of that shot's the exact same too. You can definitely see Nagamine's fingerprints on this one.
-
…Did they just confirm the theories that
! Kyoshiro is Denjiro? He shows up in the Akazaya/Scabbards montage next to Shutenmaru.

One Piece Episode 893 Preview QSJzITSIvKQ
Zoro in Wano + New Eyecatchers - Episode 892 -
The vocals can go alongside We Can as the most forgettable vocals in One Piece openings. Very cool background music though.
Also Toei did a nice job at practically spoiling the entire arc. Could've just asked Oda and spoiled the entire arc while they are at it.
-
Love the new opening. Easily the best opening animation-wise, no contest - holy crap at how good some of those scenes look. Only criticisms are the "clips from the episode" part (which will hopefully be replaced before too long), and the amount of spoilers for anime-only fans. Some I don't think are too bad, but Kaido's ability? Sanji's raid suit? Should have waited on those imo. Otherwise, visuals were fantastic. Song is very catchy and energetic too, which I like. A lot of the post-timeskip opening songs had to grow on me, but I already like this one, so that's a good sign.
Very pleased overall.

I'm a little biased as a manga reader, but I would 1000x have character designs and powerups spoiled over random shots of the Straw Hats interacting with each other on the Sunny/Wano. Builds hype, doesn't give THAT much away imo.
I had forgotten what We Can was like so I watched it, particularly to compare the Kaido fight scenes. And man, the one here is absolutely god tier compared to We Can. Granted, this one has more to work with, but there was nothing about We Can's fight scene that was interesting.
