Chapter 979: Family Problem

Did anyone mention the Will of P. in the spoilers? If not it lives on

Wasn't Yamato the name of the kingdom that later on became Japan?

Yasu is still dead.
-
I had a feeling Pound wasn't dead. His "death scene" was one of my favorite moments in the WCI arc, but honestly I'm not too miffed that he's alive because after all he's been through he deserves to actually meet his daughters and grandson, and his death affected no one in-universe. Pedro better stay dead though.
If I had to bet on any of the All-Stars losing their position, I would bet on Jack. Just so he could be more easily relegated to fighting Inuarashi and Nekomamushi. But at the same time I wouldn't think the timeframe supports any of the All-Stars losing to the Tobiroppo.
Does Kaido want Yamato back in order to force him to marry one of Big Mom's daughters?
A lot of Wano's plot has hinged on red bean soup so far. If only Popeyes had locations in Wano.

Lol, they actually had to have Pageone clarify what the hell is going on with Ulti's dialogue.
Also, I'm extremely bothered by the fact the troops are on opposite sides yet they're 'souther forces' and 'eastern forces'.

I thought you were a goat but here you outed yourself as a south bird

Somehow I hadn't noticed the eye mark on Bao Huang's mask is also tattooed on Who's Who chest (and btw, someone pointed out in the spoiler thread the natives from Torino island also have the mark tattooed).
-
So it really is "East" and "South" squads. I don't get it.
-
It turns out the translated mannerism Ulti was trying to force was really a "refined lady" speech. Being honest, I'm thankful for it being clarified on P1's line.
-
The line about waiting for the Big Mom Pirates' arrival is different here. Waiting for their "ship" definitely doesn't sound the same as the fan translations made it sound.

-
It's so rare I'm correct in my prediction !
In the japanese raw, it was also south, so we'll see if it is a typo or not. I'm not sure it is that important though
There is no notion of new models for Franky machines in Stephen translation so I suppose it was a scan mistake. It makes more sense since they are exactly the same than those in Fishman islandSo what are the possibilities for the hidden shadow : Yamato, Caribou, Tama ?
-
So what are the possibilities for the hidden shadow : Yamato, Caribou, Tama ?
Caribou because of his history with both Jinbe and Robin.
I mean Jinbe was the one that took him out of fishman island and he got the information of "Poseidon" from Robin.
-
Loved the chapter. Waiting to see who will find Yamato and bond with him. Momo? Zoro? Robin & Jinbe?
Still not sure if I'm enjoying the Tobi Roppo. Don't have the feeling with them I had with the CP9 group meeting and chilling together. Their dialogues are still stiff and weird
Sorry to say it, but I'm happy Pound is alive. If he died it would be too sad, and Oda doesn't want to write these sad stories
-
Maybe he and peros will meet and bond over being semi-liquid creeps
-
Fans: I think Oda will bring back Monet and Vergo in a cover story

Pound is the only one who knows he is their father though

Is this the blue theme? eww lol

People were right when they said Pound"s death wasn't Oda's style at all. Oh well, it is what it is, not really mad at him reuniting with his family tbh
Great chapter, I'm really enjoying seeing more of the Tobi Roppo. Also find it amusing that Kaido is very chill around his stronger subordinates.

I always found Pound's ''death'' kinda unnecessary! Pound attacked Oven with a stick that did he probably did not even felt and Oven attacked him for that but if Pound did not do that,Oven being the stupid dumbass he is would have ruined the ingredients for the wedding cake and Big mom would have destroyed Tot land so Oven should be grateful to Pound yet attacked him regardless!
plus that Big Mom is so coldhearted to remove the husbands after the children are born and removing out of their lives and cruelly treating her children like Chiffon for no reason, the fact that Lola who and Chiffon the children who Big Mom hates the most and Pound who never gave up on her children are getting together to be their own family is like a big FCK YOU in her face and her beliefs of what SHE decides who's family , which i love.

I don't think the maps have accurately depicted what direction the skull is facing. If it faces southeast the names make sense.
-
Good that Jinbe dialogue is corrected, it did not make sense that Franky claims they are new things when we actually have seen them before.
Btw, is that the first time we have seen the translation "Lead Performers"?
-
@Kaido:
Fans: I think Oda will bring back Monet and Vergo in a cover story
Just wait for the Dolamingo family one. Vol 3. "In Punk Hazard, someone assembles a Vergo puzzle." God, it's gonna be so absurd to see them come back almost a decade later.
-
No, All-Stars has always been Lead Performers on the official translation (and the fans translation started using Okanban starting from 978. Probably because Oda chose to simply romanize Shin'uchi instead of translating it to "headliners" or whatever, so they probably figured out he will do the same with the top rank).
-
Btw, is that the first time we have seen the translation "Lead Performers"?
No that's the way Stephen translate Okanban in previous chapter
-
Kaidou is going to die, he even got succesor, just like wb got weevil.
-
Loved the Strawhats part. The part with Kaido and his headliners was kinda boring. Their interaction is a little bland.
But have to wonder where Oda is going with this. Wouldn't just introduce a Beast Pirates subplot for no reason amid all this. Chances are it's going to be important in the future.
Oh and lol at Pound being alive, which should come as surprise to absolutely no one.

I assume its his way to keep a bunch of heavy hitters occupied away from the raid.

I assume its his way to keep a bunch of heavy hitters occupied away from the raid.
I hope it's not just that. Hope it's about this Yamato fellow becoming an ally or something to that effect.
-
I assume its his way to keep a bunch of heavy hitters occupied away from the raid.
If they're scattered, it would also make it easier to take them down one at a time if that's where he's going with it.
-
To me it seems pretty obvious the Tobi Roppo will end up running into the different strawhat groups while searching for this Yamato guy (who he himself would probably run into someone else).
-
I assume its his way to keep a bunch of heavy hitters occupied away from the raid.
But without them there, there isnt even a point in depicting the raid. Obviously Kaidou wont join the fun yet and the rest of the Beast Pirates below the Flying Six offer no challenge at all.
I surely hope we dont have a volume worth of chapters of clashing with fodder, while the whole 'BM and children meet Kaidou' and the Search for Yamato subplots go on in the background. -

Some of them could potentially run into themselves too if it is a first one to deliver type of reward. Should be entertaining either way. And like Razh said the kid will probably end up contributing in some way too, either by outright chosing sides or just by being difficult.
-
Damn. I woke up hella late and remembered I had some OP to read. Straw Hat parts were hilarious and I'm interested in whatever's going to happen with the Tobi Roppo. Also, Caribou is my only guess for the rustle in the bushes, though I suppose it could be a different sized stowaway…
-
Oh Pound, I really wish you were dead, but if there was one "dead" guy that I would not be surprised to see coming back alive it was you. Not so much because Pound was never shown to be explicitly dead, but because his passing was not mourned by anyone, not acknowledged by anyone. This kind of death is a little bit too contrary to the spirit of One Piece. I say that because if we remember Hiluluk's speech that you only die when you're forgotten, then Pound was dead twice, since beyond deceased he was also forgotten. There was no closure for him.
The chapter itself was pretty good in the middle, but a little lackluster in the cliffhanger. Loved all the interaction between the Strawhats and the Beast Pirates.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
So who is the shadow spying on the Strawhats?
a) Yamato
b) Tama
c) Caribou
d) OtherI say Yamato.
-
Those are definitely the three I would imagine it might be. It would be weird if it was Caribou, I suppose, since Sanji's haki didn't go off, even though he was able to spot him as a nuisance in FI along with Zoro and Luffy.
-
I am 10% sure that Yamato will be somewhat an ally.
-

Haki of Observation is not consistent in the narrative. It only works according to Oda's will.

Might be that child kidnaper/poisoner is really dead cause Oda has plans for her devil fruit.
Kinda like Absalom who wasn't ever reedemed.Besides, only the will of P survives.
-
Kaido's announcement will be that Blackbeard is a bitch-ass motherfucker because he pissed on his wife.
-
Kaido surprisingly seems like a rather chill boss (as long as he's no angry drunk). I can't imagine someone like e.g. Enel or Crocodile handling Ulti's outbursts like that. The Beast Pirates are growing on me fast ever since coming to Onigashima.
-

Damn. That's a hell of a sureness-level.

I'd avoid signing up with a mood swinger who drinks, especially when your best case for career advancement is being spliced into a half goat crotch half man creature. And BM has that shitty retirement plan of being soul sucked and put into like a singing roof or whatever. Blackbeard is clearly the superior bastard to work for, just be strong, mean and try to remember his title.

Oh, you definitely shouldn't opt for the Beast Pirates as an entry job, transfering when you're already have some credentials like Drake or Sasaki seems like a sweet deal tho.

And don't have a broken-ass DF.
Else he'll do ominous things with your body under the blanket.

The question is if a transfer comes with a mandatory Kaido beating. Or if Drake just beat up his doorman and got hired on balls alone
-
So point is about to meet his family? That's nice. And we know Pez like him already.
Franky's automobiles are cool as hell. He even has a tank.
So Jimbei and Robin are taking the scenic route. I wonder how long it will take them if they are just walking. Also Luffy is already inside despite chasing Kidd so where is he?
So I guess we should take those two excaptain seriously since they got singled out. Also for some reason the one with the mask got a panel with Kaido and the All stars.
I am quite curious how Big Mom will look in her kimono. I didnt think of it but it would make sense for Yamamoto to be running because he doesn't want to get married.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Oh yeah Kaido seems weirdly reasonable in this one. And Jack looks like a badass. It was really a strange vibe based on previous chapters.
-
Hm, difficult question. I guess it would depend whether you are strong or not?
Big Mom is a really good bet if you just want to keep your head down and the Paradise half of the world is not an option for you. Totland is a dream country after all, if we ignore Linlin going on rampages and stuff. But you can avoid that easily, no need to reside on her main Island or something. If you are powerful you just pull a Smoothie, if you're weak you pay the soul tax. Which is kind of nasty, but at least you're getting something out of it, the system makes sense.
Shanks is way too risky. God knows what he and his crew of Rednecks do when no one is looking. Maybe they are swell dudes and just want to party, but maybe they also go full KKK on Fishman on off days or something.
Kaido is just awful on every level, whether you are strong or not. The Smiles suck and their bio-weapons are uncool.
Blackbeard is the winner if you are decently strong. Parties, cool captain, a Devil Fruit of your choice. Sweet deal.
-
The good: the straw hats are fun together especially usopp and sanji. They rarely interact but I think they have some fun chemistry together. One thing that makes post-timeskip One Piece less good than the first half for me is that every single arc is so over bloated with characters (especially Wano) so that few of them can be developed. Meanwhile the straw hats are sidelined. That's one of the biggest difficulties for a storyteller; trying to reel yourself in and not overstuff your story with a million characters and scenes even if you want so bad to include them all. It's nice to have some simple fun strawhat interactions again. The best things about One Piece for me are the character interactions and battles where the straw hats grow and overcome awesome megahyped villains. The latter is massively lacking post-timeskip but thankfully the former is still very present (just cut down on sanji's creepyness ok? I want to like him real bad).
The bad: Pound was happy when he died, so it's not so excessively cruel to let him stay dead. Of course this is One Piece so nobody ever expected him to die which really dampens what was one of the best scenes in whole cake. It was a really bittersweet scene, he died tragically forgotten (or rather, never even known) by his daughter, but she and his grandson are finally safe, free and loved. He even shared one last smile with his grandson, so he was not totally forgotten. Tragic but beautiful. Poignant is a word I'd rarely use to refer to One Piece, but that scene was worthy. But of course you know he's not actually going to die so that removes the tragedy from the scene which dampens it, as good as it still is. That's also why Pedro is a complete failure of a character I couldn't care less about. From the beginning you know he isn't in any danger anyway. Maybe he's actually dead, but you'd never know that until One Piece is totally over because you just assume he's alive. It's completely in character for Oda to just totally ignore his 1 year lifespan. Why would I care? Don't get me started on the scene of the formerly scummy marines sacrificing themselves on punk hazard to shi no kuni so the others can escape. Dying painfully with tears in their eyes, but thumbs up. Nah they're alive even though it was established that shi no kuni is a sure death sentence. Man, One Piece just has no stakes.
Kaido surprisingly seems like a rather chill boss (as long as he's no angry drunk). I can't imagine someone like e.g. Enel or Crocodile handling Ulti's outbursts like that.
Kaido is so tired of life he probably doesn't have any more fucks to give.
-
The question is if a transfer comes with a mandatory Kaido beating. Or if Drake just beat up his doorman and got hired on balls alone
I think the beatings are precisely to make people join.
-
Joining Big Mom is a good way to find yourself a wife/husband if you're having trouble doing it on your own.
