Cool VIZ is not working in my country…
New Shonen Jump Overhaul! - FREE OP simulpub + paid backlog

@LUFFY#1:
I agree with others who say someone on the forum should make a easy to read guide for how to access Viz translations whether you live in one of the countries Viz is offering this or not, because unfortunately, too many people are used to just scanlations every week and it will have to take a while for people to get used to this new format of reading. Besides that, I am down. Planning on a lot of binge reading starting Sunday.
this woukd be really good as I use Viz for Vigilantes and DB super but i'm not sure if it will be the same method for new shonen jump or if i'l need an account or how to access it.
-
I don't have any insider info about this week specifically but the big "NEW JUMP ON THE 17th" tagline leads me to believe that the Sunday releases won't start this week? The launch of the new system is tomorrow, and Sunday simul will probably start next week?

Vigilantes and DBS will be simulpub releases (DBS was always truly simul _and Vigilantes was ~24 hours after Japan; now it'll be simul for real), which means you can read the latest three chapters for free.
Re: not living in a licensed zone - you can apparently use a VPN, temporarily, to download the app, and then access the app without the VPN.
Or keep the VPN full-time for browser access._ -
Quick warning to new users that Jigokuraku (Hell's Paradise) is a really really cool (sort of) new series that is NOT available on the app because of age restrictions, so you need to use the browser to read it. In case you're out of the English-speaking world, you have to use a VPN to access it. But this series is worth it, at least for me.

Is that the demon-hunting one? I think it was first up a few weeks ago, and it seemed pretty un-kid friendly. :P
-
Demon-hunting? Not exactly.
It's convicted criminals and samurai bodyguards who get sent to a mysterious deadly island.Definitely a lot of gore. And up to 40 chapters already.
It's my favorite thing I'm currently doing that everyone is still sleeping on <_<
-
Personally, I was rapidly left out. I was not invested in the main characters. The setup is a bit to extreme and I'm not that much into violent series.
And everybody told of some originality in the title that i couldn't find.
But I'm a shonen guy to the core and it seems people prefer more mature things nowadays. -
So we should be good to go! Yes! I see the chapters to read for free, but I haven't been able to find a way to subscribe for $1.99.
-
The app isn't doing anything for me.
-
Is it going at a specific time today?

Oh wow, so every mature series in the archive will only be readable in the browser? That sucks, app is so more convenient. But well, will switch between app and pc then.
Netflix etc. can offer mature content in app why not shonen jump. Are they that afraid of having all the content, cause they have to think of the kids…the kiiiiids? xD
-
Are the chapters up yet on Viz? Maybe I'm not looking in the right place.

Yeah, that's the reason the app doesn't do it for me (downloading the app on the phone is easy, just make an US account and use it to download it) as Jigokuraku would be one of the main reasons I would go VIZ. For me it has to be the browser option, but all my attempts to use VPN were prevented by my complete ignorance on the matter.
I join the group of those hoping for a "VPN for dumbs" tutorial.
-
For anyone confused why the app hasn't launched right at the start of the day:

) Could they not just ask if you are 18 or older in the app before letting you read?
-
I had to google "backlog", with that you mean every single volume released so far, right? So if you subscribe you have access to everything online? And the recent chapters are going to be free as well?
That's crazy. I wish I wouldn't live in the third world country called Germany. Sadly I know very little about internet things and how to cheat myself around barriers and stuff, and of course I don't know if there would be any legal consequences for me if I did. I need to look into this, thanks.
You should get A VPN anyway. They're good for a lot of stuff. Cheap, too. I watched the whole world cup on ZDF and ARD with a VPN. German commentators are so much better than American ones.
-
Alright, the free chapters are in but I'm not sure the update is properly done… at least the app is still exactly the same. It's weird, but launching new stuff is always a bit of a mess. As long as the whole thing is working properly in a couple of weeks, it's fine by me. Off to read this week's chapters! Cool stuff!
-
Im trying to read my hero on my tablet, the chapter took 10 refreshes load, then only showed 3 pages and then stopped after 7 on the next try. Ughhh this is kind of annoying, that the day of this launch they might be overswamped with traffic
-
The app is showing me the stuff that were advertised as free, but not the full backlog, I checked Promissed neverland and <series of="" the="" guy="" who="" eats="" demons="" fingers="">.</series>
-
Got the full backlog after updating my app, but when I download individual chapters it says '7 days left'. Does that mean I can't just keep downloaded chapters on my device indefinitely until I decide to read them? I don't recall there being additional stated restrictions aside from 100 chapters a day.

Quote from the membership info section on the app:
You can have up to 100 Shonen Jump chapters downloaded on your device at any one time. Downloaded chapters are automatically removed after 7 days.

Downloads only staying for a limited time is standard practice in this kind of service. Netflix and Amazon Video do it, for instance.
Now that I'm taking a good look at the catalogue, it's surprising that neither Yu Yu Hakusho nor HunterxHunter are available. Those feel like big omissions, along with JoJo. The new simulpubs (Jujutsu Kaisen, Act-Age and Kimetsu no Yaiba) are also missing chapters. I imagine they'll be adding them little by little. We'll see how fast or how slow.

Did you try to view them in app? Could they be only available on browser website, cause kid friendly app etc. policy?
-
The note on the backlog is "a back catalog of nearly everything Shonen Jump has ever released in English." So if they never released the chapter in English, it won't be in the backlog, which is probably why things like Jujutsu Kaisen & Act-Age only have their Jump-Start chapters & the newest one, while Kimetsu no Yaiba has the English volume chapters, along with the newest one.
Series they are releasing English volumes for will eventually catch up. Question will be if they will go back & fill in those missing chapters for the series they aren't releasing volumes for.
-

They are not available in either. You can buy the volumes, but they are not part of the backlog.
-
I'm curious about why Togashi stuff is absent, but i'm subscribed and committed regardless!

the Jeff CCC linked said they just haven't been added to the vault yet, they will be there eventually though.

Alright, was going by https://www.viz.com/sj-offer . A bit annoying since this restriction never happened in the past. I personally read exclusively on the train commuting to/ from work offline and the download interface is incredibly clunky, and not really suited to anything other than live streaming (in which case there would be no issue with the 100 chapter limitation). Removing downloads makes more sense in the context of massive video files that clog up viewer’s hard drive space.
-
"This was announced (I believe on last week's Shonen Jump podcast), but for series that are new to simulpub (Act-Age, Haikyu, Kimetsu no Yaiba, Jujutsu), the backlog doesn't have every chapter at launch. The gap between early chapters and new simul ones will be added over time!"
That answered my question.
-
really liking this approach. subscribed immediately.
also i spread word about this 3 free chapters on the app for every series with official translation to all my friends.
now they will stop using the shitty apps on their phones
-
Well, the app hasn't updated on Amazon App Store, but if it stays like this (the free package) it wouldn't be so terrible.
Was World Trigger catchup or the HxH catchups a test drive for the mass deletion?
-
I'm kind of confused. At the end of the latest SJ chapters, it says "Next Chapter hits December 21", which is this Friday? I thought they were coming on Sundays? Friday seems early.
-
Saturday Japan time due to holiday schedule.

Holiday release.
Bootleg scans will probably be early as well.
-
Oh, right. Of course. Duh. How could I forget that lol
-
I assume they are in the process of adding all series, cause so far the archive of everything viz released in english to read is pretty small?
-
it's a good deal…too bad that i can't access it from my country anyway.
-
So, you tell me Canada also has the WSJ app, that has more stuff that the Viz app?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2155761
(I haven't tried this guide, I'll try this or next week)
Hmmmm I wonder if this newfangled technology of "proxy" can help me with this.
-
The sad thing is, Shonen Jump wont be distributed on comixology anymore. I dont have any problem of paying for it on other platforms even it is for free at viz but it is borderline bullshit to discriminate longtime paying customers with the move of not making Shonen available on other platforms that are better. Viz really fucked up again. And for the record, they promisde multiple times they would release Shonen Jump in HQ in 300 dpi or so, but now we get Jump for free but in the same bullshit quality. From a quality point of view viz didnt do anything for increasing quality or rewarding paying customers. F+k viz
-
The best Christmas gift ever.
-
@CCC:
Today's the big rollout with all hands on deck so they're probably going to be tweaking stuff throughout the day.
Jeff is one of the tech guys/app devs at Viz, and he has a running tweet thread with updates:
Can we tell Jeff that flash is dead and that they need to move on from that garbage asap
-

I think CCC had mentioned something about purchasing a VPN being a good way for those outside of the listed territories to still be able to support Jump.
-
Just found out the new app is not compatible with my phone's Android version. Crap. Another reason to buy a new one, besides the battery being all but dead…

Is a new android update available for your phone? I did one a couple months back and the app has worked fine since.
-
The app store also says that if you are outside the region (someone knew how to extract the apk, and it installed correctly)
-

i tried with a free one and the app still doesn't show up on the play store
never even considered spending money to try spending more money to be honest :P
-
Type in shonen jump apk in google and you will find a site called apkpure. It has the newest viz and shonen jump apps, and is save. Download it on android phones without any vpn and voila.
On ios you dont need vpn either. Just a us itunes account. Find a tutorial how to make one, download on the us app store and enjoy on your standard account without vpn.
-
I am using a free VPN and I can access the application thingy, but it says it is not compatible with the software version. But I can access the chapters just fine in my pre-existing app, so whatever. I think the only thing that really changed is the logo anyway
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Oh wait, I think I can't access the backlog in my version of the app... hm. Gotta check out the advice above.
-
So what about us non-US citizens…?
Also, what's apforums going to do? Will there still be links posted to new chapters and spoilers before release or will we start following the official release. If I can actually read the chapters in EU I have no problem reading on another day of the week.Edit: nevermind the EU-thing. Downloaded the apk, installed it and am able to read.
NO VPN NEEDED.
