They already tried "shaking things up" in Sun/Moon, and that didn't go over very well.
Wasn't Sun/Moon decently well liked when it came out? I thought it was USUM that made everyone sick of Gen 7.

People liked both Sun/Moon and USun/UMoon, they both were received well and sold gangbusters.

Oh we all liked it well enough, but I don't remember anybody saying, "These new gyms are better than the old gyms" or being particularly fond of having the story break up your progress like every 30 seconds.
But the pokemon were fun, and that's the most important thing.

THat's because they made good AND bad changes.
Having unique boss battles with special mechanics was cool. TM slaves just being summons was something that should have been implemented ages ago, just like HMs becoming reusable. Everyone loved aloan forms.
Having the story hold your hand with a vice grip and not leave you alone for more than a screen at a time was not cool.
Gameplay changes were good, story changes were not. ANd the story gets in the way of the gameplay so strongly it overwhelms anything else… not helped when they released the identical remakes a year later and didn't fix the problem.
Robby said everything:
The Bad:
Handholding
The low rates on wich the new mons spawn compared to the older ones
The small pool of new mons, even if you count alolan forms
Zmoves being OP (but at least the trainers use them on you, so it's interesting seeing them KO your ace and having to improvise)
Rotomdex not shutting up
With Ohmori being the Game Director, I fully expect Sword & Shield to have one of its focuses being story again. He was the main guy behind Sun & Moon, so…
They already tried "shaking things up" in Sun/Moon, and that didn't go over very well.
https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/finance/software/3ds.html
They both sold about the same.
Ugh, Rotomdex. So, SO stupid and clearly trying to get some of that Yokaiwatch action. And it wouldn't leave you alone. ANd it looked super dumb. I hope thats not a permanent addition but it seems like an "upgrade" they wouldn't back away from unless it was super unpopular.
Considering the anime straight up made it a main cast member, I have no idea how anyone feels.
Rotomdex was dumb and made worse by the fact that Rotom wasn't catchable in Pokemon Sun and Moon.
I would imagine most people don't have this problem, but the Rotom Dex's blinking made it really hard for me to focus. I ended up hating it a lot.
Going back to one screen might doom the rotomdex.
I didn't have any problem with Rotomdex. In fact, having a travelling companion pokemon by your side made the whole experience all the more lively IMO.
Story is ok, but I would rather have more gameplay. Sun and Moon were very enjoyable, but I would be lying if I didn't say I want a more gameplay focused experience.
And I could care less about the number of mons. For me it's always quality above quantity. In Gen 1, half of the species weren't of my taste. In Gens 6 and 7, I didn't dislike a single one of the new introduced mons.
Rotomdex was okay, except it's stupid text kept getting in the way when I wanted to use it. And, for some reason, I really had trouble getting it to open the map.
I neither liked nor disliked the Rotomdex. But who knows what could change.

They backed away from Pokemon Gyms each having their own unique remix of the Gym theme (along with the situational battle music) and that was popular.
Yeah I mean it's so awesome how Sun and Moon prominently featured Solrock and Lunatone. :ninja:
I enjoyed seeing Pokemon Z explore the lore around Zygarde and playing it on the Switch.

I like quality and quantity, but if I have to pick one, then quantity, since all of the generations with large amounts of new pokemon introduced have had higher percentages of new Pokemon I've liked. (along with more, of course) I did the math a year ago because why not and I had the time to. The only correlation I found was that over 100 new mons equals a higher percentage.
The few pokemon I despise are mostly from the last two gens as well, which hurts them a lot. I also like to think that every single design has a lot of thought, effort, and creativity (usually) put into it and whether they are to anyone's given taste is purely subjective (Very few pokemon are mostly disliked or entirely loved. I think Garbodar and the Vanilluxe line get a lot of hate and it's hard to think of a fully loved pokemon), so again, quantity always for me.
Uh don't you mean HM slaves and TM's becoming reusable?
Nope. I accidentally wrote HM both times.
I then realized my mistake and fixed one of them.

That's a laziness/budget/time issue more than an active design choice, I would think.
Much like the mons following behind you is certainly something they'd always include if they could, but…
I honestly haven't played a Pokemon game since Diamond and Pearl, so I'm looking forward to this
X/Y was amazing, you should look into that if you want to play some while waiting for the new one to come out.

I don't have a 3DS unfortunately :'(
Never mind, I'm sorry. Maybe they'll be smart and re-release a version for the Switch in the future.
Black and White is my favorite, so if you have a regular DS I highly recommend it.
Rotom Dex was slightly annoying but largely harmless in regular Sun & Moon.
…Then USUM made it simultaneously better (by giving it an actual function) and infinitely worse (by having it NEVER EVER STOP TALKING.)
The best version of Rotom Dex is the anime's take, and that's in no small part due to the fact that it actually acknowledges what a stupid and annoying character it is and plays it for comedy.
Are they going to have to find a way to cram Ultra Beasts into this? Gotta be honest, I don't really care for em and wouldn't complain if they were left in Gen 7 entirely.

They're part of the dex numbering and not some separate Ultra Beast dex, so yes. They will for forever more have to be crammed in somehow. Maybe not in the main plot, but there will have to be a wormhole or something that gives access to them and all the legendaries.
I liked the ultra beast tho. Their alienness makes them endearing, better than the rest of "alien" mons in that aspect, like Clefairy, Deoxys, Elgyem.
Them being the ultimate invasive species, while only highlighted with Nihilego and Guzlord fit the Alola region very well. That they were just a random encounter in an area was a new style for them. That they aren't unique (except Guzlord) but a swarm or invasion. That they aren't even named pokemon until caught and studied, before that point they are UB-xx.
They gave a different flavor for legendaries, compare the distribution of gen 4: (not counting just by dex, but by interesting form changes, meaning not Arceus palete swaps)
Lake trio
Creation/Gen Mascots
Leftover from gen 3: Regigigas
Leftover from mythicals: Cresselia
Heatran because.. why?
Mythicals:
Darkai (new moon themed)
Shamyn (a hedgehog with 2 forms)
Manaphy (???)
Arceus (God)
Leftover:
Phione
vs Gen 7:
GET IN THE BAG TEAM: Cosmog, Cosmoem, Solgaleo, Lunala
Ultra GET IN THE BAG: Necrozma and forms
The Tapus: Koko, Lele, Bulu, Fini
Leftover Zygardes: Dog and Gundam (bacteria doesn't fight, snake wasn't new)
The Ultra Beasts: Rock Jelly, Sexy Roach, Bara Quito, Festivus Tree, Wall Rocket, Paper Cut Killer, Gluttony, Wall with legs, Disco Ball Clown, and the Poison Mosquito Dragonx2.
And the mysticals:
Magearna (ancient robot mon)
Zeraora (because Incinerorar didn't "do it" for everyone)
Marshadow (the one that I did not remember from memory)
And however they end counting Meltan and Melmeltan.
In the end is like the same ammount, but having pre-evolutions instead of Phione, and having an unyfing theme over all the legendaries (Nephy and Necrozma were also aliens, Zygarde is also a guardian with the tapus) made me like it some more this gen.
I wonder, last gen we went without gyms, maybe this time we'll go without a crime sindicate?
Imagine the plot being closer to a sports story (based on the stadium gyms) than a kid vs mafia/ecoterrorist/cultist/peta/evilFashionistas/aimlessYouth/PokemonCollectors, giving you rivals and a tournament, like what Supergiant's Pyre did.
Taking the pokemon league and turning it closer to a sport, where is not just collect 8 badges, beat 4 elites and champions, but you go out, fight the 8 gyms with both leaders and rivals, earn points both through victories and defeats, be placed into brackets, and battle it out.
Having a rival and a gym leader at every gym, would give us a wide range of possible personalities, while gamefreak doesn't want to make our main rival an asshole anymore, having a variety of them, fighting and getting points, wining or loosing depending on how good or bad they do against us, like if we face the "wally" as an overwhelming force and crush him, he loses confidence, but if we don't powerlevel and the battle is close he gets to improve, and if he wins that battle he gets a serious confidence boost, while the opposite happens with the "Silver" that he develops as a person only if we beat him throughly, and only gets a Crobat when he realizes "THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP"tm.
The multi rival part on Kalos failed because they had dumb dreams and were introduced as just a unit, while in gen 3 we had Wally and the other avatar doing their own thing, gen 5 had ceren and bianca, who form a good development going into B&W2, and last gen we had Hau (who everyone feels is meh, but I personally enjoyed) and Gladion (who no one says anything about), and then the leagues rematches, where you get to be rivals with a varied crew, from your old rivals, to the villain flunky, to a random dragon rockstar, to your boy Guzma, to the youngster of route 1.

For some reason I read "flunky" as "funky", and now I want the enemy team to be Team Funky, lead by Funky Kong.
I wonder, last gen we went without gyms, maybe this time we'll go without a crime sindicate?
Unlikely, as they'll probably want a story where the kid can be a HERO.
All I want to know is, what is the likelihood that they're going to make it possible to actually catch 'em all? Like how do they integrate other games into it or will they? And do they still charge a service fee for the online storage boxes and that kind of thing? You'd think by now they would make it possible for the game to hold enough date for all of them in one cartridge. If they don't let things catch up properly I don't know if I'll let myself get back into the universe of Pokemon after my post-Gen 4 retirement from it. Oh, and have they figured out to drop the Original Trainer crap yet? That always bugged me when I had to trade with myself to get specific Legendaries and they weren't 'mine', while with regular non-Legendary ones I could just breed a new one where I was the OT.
The Ultra Beasts are amazing.
Buzzwole alone was enough for me to embrace the new extraterrestial mons. I mean, how many times have you seen a swolen mosquito flexing and posing, with a funky bgm to go with it.

That would honestly be super boring to me. My lack of enthusiasm for the sports theme aside, I really like the simple structure of having a basic motivation for progress (complete the various gyms/trials/whatever and become a master) but with a more interesting plot unfolding in parallel. They don't have to be straight-up villains… I could for example envision a plot here with the industrial/steampunk theme of technology and perhaps using/exploiting pokémon for technological advance.

Practically zero? There's pretty much no way they're going to have all ~900 pokémon catchable in one game. That's the whole point of the Pokémon Bank, where you can transfer stuff over from older gens if you want. There's literally no reason to have them all stored in boxes in a single title. And as opposed to Nintendo's horseshit online Switch service, I have no real qualms spending 5 bucks a year for this specific service. And it's really cool to know who originally caught/bred a pokémon. My sympathies for your horrible OCD if these couple of nitpicks become a deal-breaker for you even playing more games.

It's only 5 bucks a year? I thought it was a monthly charge. Might have been mixing it up with Playstation Plus or something. I just don't want to have to buy every other game in order to have access to all the generations which is what I've been told is likely what would need to happen. Also I refuse on principle to pay Nintendo's ridiculous service charge either if that's required to have access to online stuff for trading and whatnot (which based on what you're saying, sounds like that is fortunately separate from the Pokemon Bank). I bet online battling will require that charge, though, but I don't give a rat's ass about that kind of thing so whatevs.
If I have to end up going online to trade for 500+ Pokemon from previous generations that I can't get in Sword/Shield (give or take when you factor out evolution derivatives from the basest forms), I'll definitely give it a miss. That's just busywork that's less appealing than level grinding. I wish more of the games (especially the re-releases) would do the Gold/Silver thing where they offer two regions in one game. That's the most appealing thing to me but HeartGold and SoulSilver aren't made for the 3DS sadly.
I actually do wonder if they'll require an online subscription just for the basic trading/battling features. I would honestly hope not, but they totally could. The last gen made it pretty damn easy to trade for everything I wanted. The regional dex had 300+ and then with Ultra they made it easy to get pretty much all legendaries in-game (though not mythicals). If your complaint is "I skipped 3 generations and now I can't play the new game unless it lets me catch every single thing I missed" then uh… I hope you realize how silly you sound.
I've been continuing my goal to complete the National Dex in AS to get the Shiny charm. Nearly done with the Hoenn Dex, just need the Regis, the other Lati, and Groudon.
I started replaying X, which I haven't played in years, to help fill the national dex. And….then I remembered why I stopped playing it. X bored me SO much. To be honest, I really don't understand the appeal it apparently has with people. Everyone obviously has their own taste, but I really just don't like it. The group of "friends" annoys me to no end. Even in Black, my second to favorite game, has an issue with too much text from characters at every opportunity, but at least it's usually limited to just Cheren, Bianca, and N. With X, it's like 4 of them. in addition to a dozen other people that just keep showing up.
While getting Pokemon in X might be easier in my overall goal of completing the National Dex in AS, I've decided to transfer up from Gen 3 to Gen 6.
The internal battery(or something else) went on my copy of FireRed, so filling the remaining Kanto Dex entries I didn't catch in AS will be done in Leaf Green. I had a save file from a Nuzlock run I gave up on from about a year ago. So I've caught about 80% of the Pokemon I needed and am now just going to need to finish the 8th gym and Pokemon League to get Mewtwo.
I have a run on SoulSilver from a Nuzlock i did a few months back. That's where I plan on getting most of the Gen 2 pokemon. i figure it'll take too long to transfer from Gen 3 to 4, so it's not worth bothering to do the Sevii islands for Gen 2 pokemon in Gen 3.
I'm dreading the eventual transfer from Gen 4 to Gen 5. For all the praise I have for Gen 5, I remember HATING that minigame needed to transfer Gen 4 pokemon to it.
So I saw a pretty cool theory about what the concept / design is going to be for the 3 Galar Starters.
It basically said: Scorbunny line will have a sports theme (either Soccer / Rugby), Grookey line will have a music (rock / punk) theme, and, lastly, Sobble will have a theater / acting theme (his face looks like the sad mask you see commonly associated with theater). The GALAR region has the word GALA in it, which, means a social occasion with special entertainments and performances, which, a sports event, a music event, and a theater event are all of these things + these 3 types of events are REALLY big in the UK of the real world, and the UK has influenced if not downright created (in the case of soccer) these.
Video where I heard the theory below (could of been stated elsewhere beforehand I suppose):
!
I saw that video too and I'm not buying that theory. For one I highly doubt Galar is based at all on the word Gala. I'd sooner consider it based on Galahad or a bastardized anagram of Regal. Something actually connected to the Sword/Shield theme. The theory I'm more fond of is the starters being based more on Arthurian/Celtic legend. There are various interpretations but Grookey's line would be based on druids/magic, Sobble's could be a dragon or hell the Lady of the Lake, and Scorbunny's could be based on an actual knight or even something like a fae.
At any rate Grookey does seem to be sound/rhythm-based, and regardless of how that manifests in the evolution designs that made him really grow on me so that's 100% my starter now.
I actually do wonder if they'll require an online subscription just for the basic trading/battling features. I would honestly hope not, but they totally could.
I never got Let's Go P/E but those need the online service for battling and trading. So it's a given for Sword and Shield. Only thing I'm hoping for is for Pokebank to also be included in that service.
How many people actually use it still? I don't think it'd be too much of a loss for Game freak or whoever.

Well it's a bad sign but not entirely a given, since Let's Go is more of a stand-alone title. I like Pokémon Bank being a separate service but if they made it free for online subscribers, effectively adding a meaningful perk to it, that'd be great. Conversely it would be great if they didn't require an online subscription if you already pay for Bank, but I doubt they'd have the competence to integrate it that way.
As for who uses it, I'm guessing tons of people? Anyone who keep playing multiple gens or wants a national dex or anything of the sort. Basically any type of collector lol. Also the fact that miles/BP rack up automatically is nice.
The "Starter Theory" that I've latched onto is that their second typings were hinted at in the trailer. Grookey was first seen playing with a ROCK, so that'll be it's extra type. Scorebunny was first seen running on a STEEL gear, so it'll gain steel-typing when it evolves. Sobble is a mystery (which kind of pokes a hole in the theory, admittedly), but it could be any typing associated with invisibility, so maybe ghost or psychic.
Other than that, I think they'll continue the fighter/mage/thief theme they've had going since XY.
First impression regarding Grookey is that its final evolution would be based on Sun Wukong/Son Goku because of its race and the fact it's using a stick. So Grass/Fighting was my first guess.
But since its name (more obvious in his french name) and presentation hints at a music theme I'm not so sure anymore.

Infernape already fill that role tho. Would be weird to have two starters based on the same legendary deity.
Without his iconic weapon it doesn't count as being the Son Goku of the Pokemon series IMO.
Anyway, as I said, that was only my first impression but now I can now that stick becoming some instrument instead of a bamboo staff to fit the music theme of its name.
Grookey evolves into Monkee, which is basically just Mickey Dolenz painted green.
I'm still banking on Scorbunny becoming a knight.
They're clearly going to evolve into Jackie Chan, Steve Irwin, and Bob Ross.

Which would hopefully not lead to it having steel as a secondary type.

What's the matter? Afraid of Earthquakes?

I just think they should get rid of stealth rock, personally.
edit: I was mistaken. It's not even weak to rock. Great typing imo.
