How is preventing poison stauts a bad ability?
It only cures on type of status, that the Pokemon has to be switched in or be in the battle to prevent/heal, which means the opponent can just not use toxic or bait the Ponyta in and then defeat it.
That and depending on the Scenario you want toxic if you have say a Toxic Heal Gliscor.
The ability atm just doesn't have much utility that can't just be fit on a Pokemon that can just learn Heal Bell, Aromatherapy, hold a berry, rest, etc.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
That and it being a Psychic type, the strategy of just switching out after healing toxic got alot less viable due to it being weak to Pursuit trapping

While you're not wrong, there's always the chance that it's evolution has a better ability. I think a few pokemon with "run away" ability tend to get something better on evolution. It's not certain, but it's possible.
Of course, I might be looking too far into this and you're just saying that it's veil ability is bad. In which case, eh, could be better could be worse. Not top tier, for sure.

@.access:
The said "leak" only got Fairy Ponyta right, which is a very common fan theory ever since regional forms were introduced (not to mention is still up in the air if Galarian Ponyta is pure Fairy or pure Psychic).
EDIT: Confirmed to be Psychic: https://swordshield.pokemon.com/en-us/pokemon-galar-region/ponyta/
Look at Mr. I wanna be Girafarig over here.
-
Welp, now I know which version to get!
That said, I would have so expected that to be Fairy, but I guess Psychic fits too.
-
I just want to see the Pokemon starter evolutions, based purely off the first stage I'm going with Scorbunny, but that could all change with the later evolutions
-
You ain't a real pokémon trainer if you can't pick a starter without knowing its evolutions :P
-
Whatever starter I pick will end up having a hideous third form while the other two end up looking cool.
Oshawatt, Chespin, and Litten have all turned awful on me and had me wishing I'd stayed on their second form. Have to go back to gen 4 and Turtwig before it gets a starter I didn't choose poorly on.

I only ever had that experience in gen 3. In gen 1 everyone knew Charizard and Blastoise, and I damn sure didn't pick Bulbasaur. In gen 2 I was so hype that I bought the little Pokedex book when the games came out and knew all of the new guys. Gen 3 I bought at the same time as my cousin, and we traded back and forth at the very beginning for an hour so we both had all three starters at the beginning. Would have been fine with any of the three, since they all had excellent second and third forms. Gens 4, 5, 6, and 7 I knew because internet.

That's three stinkers in a row, lol. Oshawott has a great second form, though, at least.

It's funny because I love Samurott and think that Oshawott's second stage is really bad. Whatever Dewott was originally leading toward, I guarantee it would have been an abomination on the same level as Incineroar.

Well the internet (and marketing) has ruined most of the mystery, but I still try to at least commit to a starter before the evolutions get revealed.

Also Incineroar is amazing. Not at all what I was hoping for or expecting, but still awesome. Zero regrets.

I'll commit now then. Team Sobble.
-
Every game I've played I have, by coincidence, picked the water type first. To break that pattern I think I'll pick the fire type this time.
-
I picked Litten but ran through the previous two gens recently where I did grass and water (Snivy and Froakie) so now I'm going back to fire with Scorbunny. Almost went Grookey though. I am fairly scared they will ruin Grookey's final evo but I think they would have to try pretty hard to ruin Scorbunny.
-
I just want my cute water chameleon. And I like water types.
-
I was remembering those days that I was a huge water-type fan (I liked any character with water related abilities) back then. Weird, because for the longest time I have no special attachment to water as a type. And while I picked Squirtle and Totodile as my starters, every single one I picked since then has been Grass or Fire.
Regarding starters evolutions being known beforehand, this image is pretty interesting: https://i.postimg.cc/fLsYbCFc/1570648844148.jpg
So, even though I couldn't remember that, Gamefreak actually never revealed the starters final evolutions (Blaziken aside) before Gen VI. And before Gen V they didn't even revealed the middle stages.
It's funny when you think that we actually only got those lines revealed before the games twice (and in Gen VI the final forms were revealed like 2 days before the game), but somehow we got this idea that we were always allowed to see those early.
I mean, before Gen V even the base forms would only be revealed pretty late on instead of opening the season. -
Well you go all the way back to Gen 1, when the game had already been out in Japan for a couple years before going elsewhere, and in north america the anime preceeded it by about a month… the original 151 were basically all known quantities on release.
So that may be a factor in why it feels like we traditionally knew all the evos from the outset, because at the very start it was true... and through various leaks and whatnot we've usually seen the final forms in advance somehow, even if just by a few days.
Anyway, my starter is probably going to be Sobble. Been a few gens since I last went with Wotter. Did fire last time and grass before that, so I guess I'm in a cycle even if I don't mean to be. However, the existence of Cramorant (also water type) means he's going to get fierce competition assuming that crazy bird isn't super late game.
Hrm. My pattern for the games has been Water, fire, grass, grass, wotter, grass, fire. Not quiiite an exact rotation with grass bias, but close to it.

This post is deleted!
-
I'm gonna try making a few accounts so I can trade with my friends and we can all start with all 3 starters, I'm just not looking forward to doing the tutorial over and over again, but I'll bare it if I can have all three
-
I've always chosen either the Fire or Water starters, never Grass. Part of it is admittedly a kinda shallow "they don't look as cool" thing generally, but I just sort of have an antipathy towards the Grass-type. Outside of competitive play Water can pretty much do most of what they can just as well in-game.
-
I find myself strongly disliking Sobble for some reason, it's design just doesn't gel with me even though the personality traits are amusing. I do expect it to probably wind up with the best evolution designs.
I recently committed to Grookey after liking it more and more over the last various months. It's likely they'll fuck up the evolution, but w.e., to me it's just more fun to commit.
-
Considering that I went fenekin, then rowlet, I think that I should go with swobble
-
I picked Snivy, Froakie and Litten the last 3 gens. I think I have a thing for the smug glare starter look. But I'm gonna go with Sobble this time.
-
Let me remember:
Bulbasaur, cyndaquill, Mudkip, (can’t remember), oshawott, fenekin, rowlet, swobble.

I just hope Grookey evo will not have human features (no human haircut, human clothing, human accessories). I mean, it's a monkey already, you put more human features on it and it becomes exactly that. But in general terms I am expecting Gen VIII to end up as a repeat of VII to me (I fell in love instantly with Rowlet and couldn't care less about Litten, but then hated Decidueye and loved Incineroar).
Btw, I think Samurott would get a lot more appreciation if it was introduced now, when everyone is completely tired of the starters ending up looking like humans in disguise. I already liked it back then (I was never a fan of Dewott), but looking back from our current position you can enjoy even more the fact it didn't end as a bipedal samurai otter.
-
I find it a funny coincidence that the one Pokemon a huge chunk of fans hoped would become bipedal didn't. Incineroar is certainly polarizing, and for those who don't like it's design, like me, a large part is it going bipedal. I'm definitely a Decidueye guy, though he took a while to grow on me. Pretty clever idea with great implementation in my opinion.
-
I've always picked the Water starter. It's because in the first generation I discovered that Water types are really sturdy in terms of type matchups and their moves are strong enough. I suppose the first gym being Brock's made that obvious early on in Red. So for me, being someone who doesn't much care for frustration, choosing the Water starter is the path of least resistance and thus I always trust to go with it.
I suppose it helps that there hasn't been any Water starter that I turned out hating. There are some that I wasn't super fond of (thinking of the Mudkip line) but nothing terrible like Incineroar or Chesnaught. Watch Sobble evolve into the next abomination now I pointed this out.
[hide]
[/hide]Eh. The only one of those I really even care for is the bottom right in the second picture. I guess the first picture one is okay, too. But the third picture? Maybe not as bad as Incineroar, but I'll just say I'm VERY glad we got Samurott. Samurott is my favorite final evolution for a starter, though, so I will always be biased.
-
I would probably pick Grookey, though I do like the first forms for all 3 this generation.
My picks were:
Gen 1 - Red Version - Charmander
Gen 2 - Silver Version - Cyndaquil
Gen 3 - Sapphire Version - Mudkip
Gen 4 - Diamond Version - Turtwig
Gen 5 - White Version - Oshawott
Gen 6 - Y - Froakie
Gen 7 - Sun - RowlettI haven't really ended up regretting any of them, though I will say I had seen all of the final forms before starting the game every generation.
Galarian Ponyta and Sirfetch'd are new forms / evolutions of 23 year old Pokemon. They should NOT be locked to different versions as exclusives. I hate that they're sticking with the two different versions of the same game thing. Locking content to one game is just stupid on the Switch where they're $60 each. Yes, you can trade Pokemon, but you can't trade gyms. No other game series could get away with the stuff Game Freak pulls. Imagine two versions of Breath of the Wild featuring slightly different shrines. I love Pokemon, but have been increasingly disappointed with Game Freak. I feel like Black / White 2 was the last set of games that have really felt 'complete'. I think the transition to 3D has really put a strain on the development team. X/Y were okay. They reminded me of Diamond / Pearl in that the game world felt a bit bland and lacking in features. I assume a (cancelled) Z version would've gone a long way to improving on those games as had Platinum back in gen IV. I think the issue stems from Game Freak refusing to expand the dev team, yet insisting on nearly annual releases while also transitioning to 3D and now HD game development, which requires more resources rather than fewer. I don't blame the devs, who are certainly overworked. The issue stems from the corporate decisions being made by Game Freak / TPCI / Nintendo / some combination of the three(?). I think they need to space out major releases, transition away from multiple versions of the same game, and increase the size of the development team. Pokemon has the potential to be amazing, but they're settling for just okay because maintaining sales does not demand excellence when you've got a winning formula and increased costs would only eat into profit. I've reached a breaking point where, I just can't purchase Sword / Shield. I really dig the new Pokemon, but the games themselves just don't seem nearly as polished or high quality as one should expect from a first party Nintendo title. It becomes really apparent when these games are released on the same platform as Breath of the Wild, Smash Ultimate, Mario Odyssey, etc.
-
I don't get what is the problem with pokémon being version exclusive at this day when you can get any version exclusive from a stranger in less than 5 minutes. Drampa was Moon exclusive, yet I had it on my team despite playing Sun.
The only people that should be mad with this are those who intend to pirate the game since they won't have access to online features, but that alone takes any right they would have to complain anyways…As for starters, the only I didn't liked having was Fennekin, which was also the only one I picked just because of the type (I had picked 2 water, 2 grass and 1 fire before and I didn't liked any Kalos starter, so figured I could just take the chance to even the numbers). Delphox never grew on me and I always felt like Hawlucha was the actual "main". If it was today, I would have just boxed it and got Malamar - who I always wanted to use but didn't because Delphox was there. Back then I felt bad about boxing starters, it was hard enough to not keep the Bulbasaur I got from Sycamore...
-
Well, there's also the fact that now you have to pay for online. While it may be the fraction of the price of a purchase of Sword or Shield, that doesn't mean everyone can do it.
I got a free subscription through that Twitch/Amazon Prime thing that should take me through shortly after Animal Crossing New Horizons is released, so I'll be okay, but after that, eh.

Gen1 - Bulbasaur
Gen2 - Totodile
Gen3 - Torchick
Gen4 - Turtwig
Gen5 - Tepig
Gen6 - Snivy
Gen7 - Rowlet
Gen8 - Scorbunny.I'm actually surprised at how many times Ive gone Grass starter now that I wrote that out. Every starter I had was great except Snivy. Seprperior was grossly underpowered amd losing large chunks of health at each attack. Maybe I ended up with a weird Nature combo but since I never pay attention to those things it became the first Starter I had to bench halfway thru my journey.
-
Oh, right, I forgot about that. Ok, I take back what I said, having to pay extra to have access to those (on top of any trade evolution) changes everything. And reminded me that I will still have to pay for that (not exactly because I also intend to have it as a bonus of a bonus when I sign Amazon Prime) since I never bothered…
-
I do understand your point. I just wanted to explain my perspective. In my opinion, version differences add nothing. It served a purpose in the gameboy days, but no longer has a place in the games. It serves only to provide incentive collectors to buy two versions of nearly the same exact game for $60 each. I think it's a grubby anti-consumer practice which amounts to developed content intentionally left out of the game. Online gaming is the standard now. People will battle / trade with friends unprompted. The games no longer need to force those features on players. People play games much differently now than they did in 1996 / 1998 when online gaming wasn't a thing. As Envy stated, online is no longer a free feature. It is a small cost, but a cost nonetheless. People also defended moving the national dex to bank in Gen 7 on the basis that it's worse, but not substantially worse enough to matter. Now here we are in gen 8 with some Pokemon Thanos snapped out of existence. Also, as I mentioned, there are things which just can't be traded (gyms for example). Not to mention, legendary Pokemon are one of a kind and version exclusive. The practice at this point to be perpetuated for the folks that will buy both versions of the game to experience all the features, which is just a crazy price tag for small differences in content which should all be included in a single game for the $60 price tag. Not only have they cut out old Pokemon, but you can't even catch all of the limited number of new Pokemon in a game that costs the same amount as Breath of the Wild and Smash Ultimate. It's not right, but they can get away with it because Pokemon sells like hotcakes and people will keep buying the games and keep defending the removal of features as insignificant (not referring to you or anyone else in this topic btw.
I just feel like so many of Game Freak's decisions hold the series back in substantial enough ways that I just can't get into new games despite liking the new Pokemon and wanting to like the games. It has nothing to do with growing tired of Pokemon, only Game Freak's development and business practices.

Amazing, you managed to start with a Gen 5 Pokemon in Gen 6! Poor Chespin, Froakie and Fennekin.

I think I'm gonna commit to sobble here and now. Their personality just matches my own too well, lol.
Btw how many of you guys already have an idea for your first team in sword and shield? -

Gen5 - Snivy (pt1) Tepig (pt 2)
Gen6 - Froakie
Gen7 - Rowlet
Gen8 - Scorbunny. -
For the first 3 gens I enjoyed playing with both the fire and water starters in the different versions. Which ones I may have considered my main are long lost to history and can't remotely remember anymore. In gen 4, I couldn't go with anything but piplup. At gen 5 I stopped playing both versions and this is for sure when I started basing starter choice off final evolutions. Had to go with Snivy, Fennekin, and Poplio from there on.
I can't commit to a Gen 8 one without seeing final evolutions, but as base forms Scorbunny is in the lead for me right now. I still haven't had a region where I dropped my starter altogether, but this could always be the one. I haven't seen enough to think I've got a team yet. Just know I want an Alcremie and this new Ponyta form.
-
What do you guys think the themes are for the different Pokémon starters
For example I heard gen 6 was based off the RPG classes Fighter, Mage and Theif

I thought sobble's theme was espionage?
-
@ trading , not everyone is able to do that either. I'm not able to trade, or to pay for online since I'm not allowed to do online purchases and wouldn't know how to even if I was allowed, I can only do physical cash.
Not that it matters much to me though since I'm not interested in completing the Pokedex or transferring Pokemon or stuff like that. I play for the adventure and sometimes a couple side features like Contests and Mantine Surfing.
-
Yeah, lots of factors that could limit someone from trading online. Until late 2014, I didn't have a wireless router, thus I didn't have Wi-Fi. I had an ethernet cable converter that plugged into my Wii U, but no such thing existed for the 3DS.

Feraligatr and Serperior were definitely the hardest starters to handle from those I picked. Serperior is just no good as a starter (non-offensive pokémon are generally bad outside of pvp and Serperior without its HA has almost no offensive presence) and Feraligatr back in GS would only learn two water moves: Water Gun back in its Totodile days and then Hydro Pump at level 58. And it was not like the rest of its move set was any better, I remember how frustrated I was waiting for it to finally learn a useful move and it never happening (remember back then TM were one-time only, which in my case meant "never use those. Except to give Psychic to Butterfree").
Hopefully I liked both enough to struggle through, but the memories are still here.
