I'm a bit underwhelmed to be honest. It pretty much looks like an update to the 3DS games. Graphics are alright but not really impressive. We still have fixed camera and random encounters.
Not like i was expecting them to be on the level of Zelda BotW or Mario Odyssey. But there was always the hope to be surprised.
I like the visual style of the world though.
Pokemon Sword and Shield - Galexit Edition
-
-
I was hoping for updates to the gameplay. Not so much the battling or catching aspect, but the actual exploration and discovery of the world. It'd be a good opportunity to add some easy, but fun platforming or something like that. Also, though I know I'll be disappointed, I'm hoping that we'll be able to visit Unova after the story. I only dare hope for this because they said this was to be the biggest and best game yet.
-
Unova? Nah give me pokeireland.
-
Please bring back the Poke Rides from Sun and Moon.
Don't obligue me to have someone with Surf AND Waterfall on my team.
-
I'd be sad if they removed pokemonamie or Pokemon refresh, maybe remove the "antidotes are useless" aspect, or make it so that you use up your healing items by the grooming mechanic for a boost of happiness or friendship.
It is kind of lame that only Sylveon evolves like that. Better way to do friendship than the other one.

Pretty sure they will keep PokemonAmie (along with Character Customization and no HMs).

Also!
My guess on the gyms, from just looking at the map (in no real order mind you):
--A Grass-type Gym (this will be the first Gym of the game)
--A Steel-type Gym (this is in the steampunk looking city, the first major city located closest to your home town)
--A Water-type Gym (this is in the town / city that looks like it's on a giant pier over the water / ocean)
--A Rock-type Gym (in that town / city with the Dugtrio carving on the hill / mountain face, this was, imho, shown yesterday in the trailer during the fight with the Tyranitar)
--A Ice-type Gym (in that town / city that had all the snow falling and ice covering it, duh)
--A Fairy-type Gym (in that town / city above that town / city I said holds the Rock-type Gym, the town / city that looks like it's in a mushroom / mystical forest)
--A Dragon-type Gym (in that 2nd major city that looks...pretty evil, but, mostly looks like a city based on a giant castle; located in the middle of the map)
--A Electric-type Gym (located in the 3rd and final major city in the farthest point North; the Elite Four / Champion is probably also here with how massive it is) -
Amie has been in two gens, character customization skipped one, and pokerides are from one and a half, even some features that most people like (follower Mon, no random encounters) get dropped.
-
I was kind of hoping for something with a little bit more of that BotW and Dragon Quest freedom in it… but guided paths and trainers along those paths are what they are I guess.
Just judging from what we can see anyway with how the tall grass is specifically clumped like its always been. Also, the one thing GO did right was have you able to see what you were about to battle, rather than it being random... Dragon Quest and Nino Kuni and Final Fantasy stopped having complete random battles ages ago... and even Pokemon seemed to have learned the lesson. Wanna be able to spot a thing from the corner of my eye and go after it, not just root around in the same patch of grass forever hoping to find a new thing. Take away the random encounter, but keep the battling.
Of course, this is all just judging from the first trailer, the actual stuff may be a bit more open, we'll see.

Character Customization didn't skip a generation. It was in Generation 6 (X and Y, wasn't in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire because they were remakes with set trainer appearances) and 7 (Sun & Moon, and Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, wasn't in Let's Go Pikachu & Let's Go Eevee, because, again, they were remakes with set trainer appearances more or less).

I am somewhat gonna miss Pokemon being seen in the overworld, but apparently, there is a subset of people who don't (because they say it takes away from the "enjoyment of new encounters, knowing what you're gonna get before hand).
The real reason they "cut it" is probably because the game world is bigger, more complex and detailed, and dense than Let's Go + it could be the reason Pokemon seemingly don't follow you…again. It's probably too resource intensive to include all these things, especially when it's clear they are using the same engine the Nintendo eShop game TOWN (another game they developed, which is so obvious a test for the engine they are primarly going to use on Switch starting with Pokemon Sword and Shield) is using. Not a bad engine, because TOWN holds up pretty well, but still...
-

Follower mon got dropped for performance issues. They had walk cycles for everything for the 3DS games, but given how those already chugged the hardware, it makes sense that it was left out. I can't imagine it'd be a hardware issue now but…
It had to be a really late in development decision too since they did walk cycles for EVERYTHING, not just like the starters, and it was in the game enough to be datamined. (And prior to them being cg models, just doing that extra handful of sprites for every character, front, back, side, and 4 frames each was just a huge development time burden)
-
Random encounters are the entire point of Pokémon IMO. Never knowing what you are going to find or run into, which also gives "dungeons" their sense of tension. If the encounter rate is what's annoying, that's what Repels are for. If you can see what you're up against and actively avoid/manipulate it, that takes away most of the thrill. That said I think I would be okay with a sort of generic indicator for encounters on the field (not in dungeons), without revealing exactly what you're about to fight. I guess kind of like they did with the Ultra Wormhole in US/UM, except those didn't move. And they did actually also have a few places where shadows moved around in grass patches without showing you what it was (though it had a silhouette), and running into it initiated a battle. That kind of stuff is fine by me. But also don't remove things like pokémon hiding to ambush you and whatnot.
Anything beyond that would be taking it too far. Ni no Kuni kind of got away with it because enemies were always in groups, and the one on the map did not reveal the actual battle you were going into. Plus a lot of the time rare Familiars were battle adds, not advertised on the map. Still, it let you constantly reload areas and spot-check them for something you wanted, which is lame.
We also already have trainers visible on the map and they sometimes move around, so if you get off on doing as few battles as possible you can still try to avoid grass and dodge trainers.
On another note no follower mons would make me sad. The capability differences between the 3DS and Switch are massive, same as data capacity. It should not be a technical feat.
-
The first trailer isn't going to show everything, that much is clear. From the content alone I can tell they just wanted let the player take a peek on the ecosystems and towns/cities, while keeping certain old and/or new features out til months later.
We're barely entering Spring now, and the games release is due for late 2019. A bit too early for all the meaty stuff to be displayed, don't you think.
-
I think I'll have to get myself a Switch. And a monkey.
-
Now Pokemon has made it to the HD, expect some DLC along the way. Wouldn't be surprised if this gets rid of the old formula of releasing an updated version, many franchises already did that.

What makes more money? Releasing a couple dlcs, or releasing the same game again (twice over) and charging 60$ for it both times?

I mean not really, besides the enviorments all the Pokemon have been in HD since the 3DS era.
All the models have been made in high hd and future proofed since the 3DS just downscalled.
-
Pokemon Company desperate to avoid a Battle Revolution situation where horrifying models from Stadium 1 coexist next to much better Gen 4 models. If the 3DS must slowly chug itself to death during double battles, then so be it.

So I doubt we'll have a third game lol, can't think of anything else to go with sword and Shield

Knight seems like a fairly logical choice. If they go that route.
-
Pokemon Spear, Pokemon Lance, Pokemon Axe, Pokemon Knight, Pokemon Armor
Pokemon Sword 2 & Shield 2
Pokemon Ultra/Super/Royal/Mega Sword and Ultra/Super/Royal/Mega Shield
Any one of those.
-

good point lol

Pokemon Sword 2 & Shield 2
Pokemon Ultra/Super/Royal/Mega Sword and Ultra/Super/Royal/Mega Shield
Any one of those.
now your just trying to make me look stupid
-
There hasn't been a third version since Platinum.
And besides, the real third version for Sword and Shield is obviously Gun.
-

Depending on how much DLC is released and how they're priced it can be the former.
@The:
I am somewhat gonna miss Pokemon being seen in the overworld, but apparently, there is a subset of people who don't (because they say it takes away from the "enjoyment of new encounters, knowing what you're gonna get before hand).
The fact that most areas can have anywhere from 5 to 7 type of Pokemon with some overlap in between and the fact that at least half of those may wind up being trash it's not really as big a deal as deal are making it out to be.
-
I doubt we'll ever see paid DLC for Pokemon, at least for the games developed by Game Freak themselves. Masuda (or possibly it was someone else up there in the company) has gone on record that they hate the practice and don't ever plan on implementing it.
Me personally, I don't really care much about following Pokémon and roll my eyes at most complaints against random encounters in general unless they're like, at NES levels of obnoxiousness and in Pokémon in particular since there are plenty of tool given to you to mitigate them.
I think in the final version you'll probably see some Pokémon milling about the area like Ultra Sun and Moon did; you can already see some birds flying high in the sky in one of the trailer's establishing shots. The routes and towns in the final version will definitely be populated by more people and creatures than just that one Lass.
-
I could see follower mons being excluded for the reason of "making Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee a more unique experience" or something along those lines. I would expect a very underwhelming explanation assuming it is excluded. The Switch should definitely be able to handle it.
-
Sure hope whoever said that took people's requests for the return of the difficulty system from B&W2 to heart and will be officially bringing it back for this game instead of doing what most companies do and sell it as either free or premium DLC.
Which of course we know they won't do cause reasons.
-
All I know is this guy better be important.
So I doubt we'll have a third game lol, can't think of anything else to go with sword and Shield
Gun, obviously.
That aside, they haven't done third games in a decade. They do enhanced sets. It'll be Alpha Sword and Omerga Shield, Ultra Sword and Ultra Shield. If we're lucky, Sword 2 and Shield 2 with actual updates and new story like BW did rather than the thinnest coat of paint possible.
-
Yeah I mean it's so awesome how Sun and Moon prominently featured Solrock and Lunatone. :ninja:

The texture looks more natural, his face looks more round, eyes don't look soulless.
Wow, the left one looks really good. Like they ripped it out of a high quality anime.
The let's go version looks like a plastic toy.
As for the starters, the water type is my favorite. I always liked the older gen designs where you could get the animal reference at first glance.
-
I just realized that Gen 6 was just X and Y.
Unless if you count ORAS.

I'd totally run it

They really do need to bring back regional forms (it's such a cool feature, imho, especially if they do it on more than just Generation 1 Pokemon).
-
Galean forms of Unovan pokemon?
https://findingnature.co.uk/animals/
Can't find a list of just Great Britain, but the eagle makes me think of british braviary, and the deer of british deerling. There are a ton of mons already kinda there, Charjabug just needs a different color, the Herdier needs nothing more.
Have to check for myths and folklore, or cotas of arms. Like would you rather Galan Lapras or a new Loch Ness Mon.

Could also do a British regional variant of Snubbull and Granbull (since they are bulldogs), instead of adding entirely new bulldogs. Obviously… The new dog of Generation 8 is gonna be a Corgi.
Also. I think I said it yesterday, but, a Lion and a Unicorn are in the UK Coat of Arms (or something to do with the UK, something somewhat important) and folklore and myths I believe, so, I fully expect that (and a dragon, dragons are also in the folklore and such).
-
Dog shows? The monster rancher parenting system but just with dog Mons, or a relatively small egg group. Or just a new dog of the field egg group that takes visual characteristics of it's non dog parent. The monster rancher thing but just for one mon.
-
But yeah… It's looking like one of the major new mechanics is going to be...
! Armored Evolution. There is stuff making mention of it in upcoming merchandising, some "leakers" and "rumor mills" who got aspects of the reveal correct mentioned it, and even subtle hints about it appear in the Sword & Shield reveal trailer.
! Not sure how it's gonna be different than Mega Evolution, or how they will make it different, guess we just gotta wait and see the marketing trailer connected to the game is released for it. -
Can we can talk of spoilers and leaks? Like I can't enforce it, I'm just proposing it. The smash news cycle left me a ton of distaste of leakers and the like.
-

Yeah… Unfortunately, in this day and age, especially as you get closer and closer to the launch of a game, leaks get out of control.
The only thing I really plan to discuss / bring to the thread are the official video uploads and information that we are bound to get (like we got with Sun and Moon) from The Pokemon Company / Game Freak themselves.
-
What 2 (or 1, if they go the Generation 6 route) "Eeveevolutions" do you guys think we will get this generation (pretty sure they are bringing them back after missing Generation 7)?
I personally could see, as odd as it sounds, a Steel-type Eevee introduced, considering the amount of Steampunk and industrial emphasis is scattered throughout the region.
-

I think we've done with standard evolutions of older Pokemon, and we're just going to get variants from now on.
…but Steel-type sounds like a good guess. Maybe fighting too, I believe in the "Galar has a Sports/Soccer/Athletics theme" theories.
-
All of the eevee evolutions have been from types that were "special" on the side of attack type before the split.
Fairy would have been definitelly special as most of it's attacks are, and the special side had one less than the physical side since forever.
Physical are: Normal, Fighting, Ghost, Ground, Rock, Steel, Bug, Flying, Poison
Special are: Fire, Grass, Water, Electric, Ice, Psychic, Dark, Dragon, FairyIt is very likely that Umbreon was going to be poison type, but got changed into dark as it was introduced, but under this logic, I'd bet for Drageon, Wyverneon, Drakeon.

Leaked footage of Poiseon.

Something like this?
I wouldn't mind a flying type at all.
-
Of these, my favorite is the ground eon.
I dislike the but-wings of bug eon.

The Gold and Silver beta confirmed that Umbreon was originally intended to be poison, but it wasn't immediately changed after dark had been programmed in.
GS was planned to have a psychic, poison and grass Eeveelution trio. -
so do you guys think this will be another Pokemon game by the books… you know get a starter, name your rival something stupid (we all did it as kids don't deny it), face 8 gym leaders, fight evil criminal organization, fight elite four, become champion, hunt down legendaries etc.
or
will they throw away the formula and try to spice things up like Mario Odyssey and Zelda Breath of the wild?
-

By the books. If they wanted to REALLY shake things up, they would have made it clear in the first trailer.
-
They already tried "shaking things up" in Sun/Moon, and that didn't go over very well.
