That sword... :D

So it seems each episode will have its own ending. Huh.
So far the anime it doing really well, each episode feeling like an improvement over the previous one. But I am a bit worried about the pacing: the 2nd episode had WAY too much content to the point I couldn't enjoy any of the entire Power portion; meanwhile the 3rd episode felt like it had too little and could definitely use the sea cucumber fight.
-
I'm really enjoying each episode so far as well. Briefing some critiques I've seen a lot of critiques due to CGI misuge, but I don't find it bad at all.
Power's power-walk throught the corridor and smashing the Sea Cucumber Devil (lol) was pretty awesome.
-
Great Kill la Kil reference. New girl design slaps too.
I just realized we will get the manga and anime released at the same time weekly (or bi weekly). Intentional or not, that's pretty cool.
Episode 2 fixed up the CGI a lot better, the clothes really help but because this fight has been promoted in the trailers, how smooth it will really be is up to the latter fights. Also, I want to say this but the people who directed the episode surely (I'm almost 90%) pay 100% more attention to composition. The vending machine scene, the car ride scene, and the previous episode with the apartment scenes all had really great composition. It's no wonder since the movie pay homage to great movies but man, it's still awesome to see executed in the actual episodes. I actually love the composition/silent scenes more than the action scenes.
-
I still need to catch up on the episodes but I found episode 1 to be pretty great.
I was impressed to find out how fast people got together to list all the pop culture references packed into the opening theme on the same day it aired.
Also some crazy cosplay by @juries_kean!

The Fox Devil scene was the one I was looking forward the most in the anime. Really curious how they would translate that to anime since the exact same transition wouldn't work here, so they would have to be pretty innovative to match how interestingly it was done in the manga.
And, well, let's just say the director doesn't seem to be as good with his medium as Fujimoto is with his.Other than that, with the fourth episode we finally got to the point where CM charm can be felt. Those final scenes in the apartment were just perfection.
Also best ending so far, reminded me of Arakawa Under the Bridge (and the fact I never finished it):
Will stop posting these, though, or the thread will start to become sluggish. -
My favorite part of Episode #4 is the scenes of Hayakawa starting his day. The reliance on visuals and sound effects alone was so nice. Yoshihara's action directing was also fantastic. He and Tanaka have both handled the two best episodes of the series.

Even if the effect is not the same, it can easily take you by surprise if you don't expect it.
My gripe is that the fights are too long, and certain scenes become repetitive. How many times will we see Denji chainsaw skating along tentacles or intestines flailing in the air? Also, shirts that stay white after being drenched in red or purple blood.
-
Yeah, I got bored during that part, but I suppose it's a necessary evil. CM doesn't really have typical fights, so if they want the shonen crowd to be hooked they will have to expand the action sequences with lots of SAKUGA since people go crazy over those even if it's just a lot of "visual" noise (meanwhile, I would take a whole minute of something like the scene where Aki was tying his hair).

These endings are so good.

I have yet to watch a single episode of the anime but ending #5 is so good. I have been replaying it on a loop.
-
As predicted but with a twist.

I'm confused as hell now. That was Denji asleep, in the third panel before Yuko's head, wasn't it ?
-
Yup.
-
...Right, thanks. Either someone is sleepwalking, or stuff is about to get real interesting.
If relative scale is to be trusted by the way, this guy is a giant.

Last night I finished catching up with the series, reading from Volume #7 through Chapter #110. Suffice it to say, I'm glad that I managed to avoid being spoiled on Volumes #9-11!

Denji keeps acting incredibly stupid but in an entertaining way. He is very much a normal boy, I guess ^___^
I'm curious about the student council prez, though. Half-convinced his starter is a fake to bed fangirls, but with Fujimoto you never know - he could just as well have contracted the lawnmower devil. Plus sister girl has matching earrings and unknown powers on top, so there may be more to it than meets the eye.
-
Denji is the dumbest, most useless lesbian I have ever known and I love her.
The comedy at play here is just amazing. Telling this story from Mitaka's point of view was such a smart idea. I think a lot of other long-running works should learn a page from this school arc.

I'd be curious to hear your perspective on this. Is it based solely on his behaviour with Asa, or the way he relates to women in general ?
Random musings: what's with Denji's teeth, by the way ? It makes him more expressive to us readers and shows his fiendish nature, but are they really supposed to look pointy to other humans ? That should give him away instantly to devil hunters, or closer to us, Yoru.
-
You know this is a high IQ series when we're 100 chapters deep and pondering if characters teeth are a visual indicator to readers or a in universe quirk.

This is kind of a complicated feeling to really describe and a lot of other scholars have written about Sapphic relationships before who have done a far better job of really nailing it. When I was recently marathoning Part 1 of the comic I found the vibes of Denji's character really reminding me of how a lot of women just have this deep, personal bond with the women they love that goes beyond what I'd call the usual 'horny shounen protagonist' cliché. Fujimoto tends to write their protagonists with really eloquent, separate from sexual but very passionate love for the women in their lives. We see this similarly in Goodbye Eri where the protagonist wants to capture the women in his life on film so as to remember them forever in a way that doesn't hurt.
When we see the women of Fujimoto works we typically see them through the eyes of the 'male' protagonist who very much does not think of these women in the way a typical shounen protagonist would. Denji's relationships with Reze and Makima were strikingly only 'sexual' in the way a bond between two women would be if they poured their hearts out to one another. This isn't to say Denji doesn't like boobs, just that what really made the bonds with Reze and Makima so striking was not the boobs. The Denji and Reze bond reminded me a lot of how my last girlfriend and I would just spend 3-4 hours a night on the phone with one another talking about anything.
Makima taught Denji that lewd stuff felt better if the partners knew each other deeply and that's been a continuing theme across the whole series. Denji's relationship with Makima strikes me more like a relationship between two Sapphics, with Denji being something of a transbian puppy-play bottom for Makima. With Reze it was almost as if Denji was being invited to leave her mistress for another.
Then there's Quanxi, who is literally, canonically a woman-loving-woman and who Fujimoto draws two fully nude sex scenes between her and her polycule in a way that feels sexy and erotic but not in a way that feels like its excluding the female gaze and only focused on a 'male gaze'.
Fujimoto has previously drawn gender bender manga as well as pretended to be his own little sister on Twitter. A lot of these details scream to me 'egg' (trans person who doesn't know they're trans yet) but it's not really polite to poke eggs like that, so I try not to just come right out and say "Yeah so I'm pretty sure Chainsaw Man is so fucking gay because Fujimoto is a trans woman and as a result I give the comic a lot of leeway."
Denji just reminds me so, so, so fucking much of an eggy transbian who relates to women in the same way women-loving-women do but performs stereotypical 'masculine' sexual behaviors (like loudly talking about wanting to touch boobs) so as to not come across as anything but a man. Well, not that Sapphics don't like touching boobs.
-
That was enlightening, thanks for taking the time to write all of it

I feel like he draws like he both wants to be his female characters, part of his soul is his female characters and he wants to date his female characters (Reze, Makima).
I mean, fuck, Kishibe is maybe the one 'male' character in the whole series that I can think of who is probably actually a guy. Aki? Bitch has late-twenties trans dyke mommy vibes for sure.
-
I wasn’t feeling part 2 yet, but with this chapter I finally felt like the story is walking on solid ground again.
-
I really liked to read @JulieYMB's take on it, thanks for putting it down!

So Famine brought the eternity devil with her? I guess the plan is to have then stuck there until they try to eat each other.
-
Fujimoto is a kino junkie, so I guess that could be true.
-
God damn it, this ending is SO good

I haven't seen the reaction of the anime community to this show yet. It's my most antecipated weekly anime show rn, I'm enjoying it at lot (CGI clonkiness haven't really bothered me up until now)

It's received a very positive reaction from normies and casual fans. Fans tuned into the production side are enjoying the work, of course, but we're also pretty concerned by how MAPPA's production schedules and pay are just ridiculously short and their staff are forced to work on multiple high-level projects at once. The poor handling of projects is not good for MAPPA employees' health or the health of their projects.
Something I've begun to notice is that with how each episode has a non-ending I kind of have to wonder if that is done to give each episode a sense of just being a part of one long movie. By the end of Episode #12 the season's combined runtime would be four hours. I kind of have to wonder how Episode #12 will end, in that case.
-
I was aware that the anime industry face a lot of issues with proper payment and do not valorize the health of it's workers, is MAPPA particularly bad in that regard?
I find the lack of proper ending a bit on the shill side of things. Somehow it works with the laidback feeling of most characters interactions, but maybe that's just me.

Yeah, MAPPA produces way too much at once and pushes their staff to produce high-quality work on short schedules for shit pay. Key animators are paid by shot (typically $40 a shot) and can usually do two shots a day (episodes usually have 300+ shots). In-between animators are paid by the drawing (typically $2 a drawing) and can usually do 10-20 drawings a day (this is an old figure based on the old days when character designs and animation demands were less complex).
In the later 1990s, after series like Eva, Card Captor Sakura and Cowboy Bebop the demands for what was then known as OVA quality on television series began to increase. Character designs were expected to become detailed, the number of drawings increased and the quality of the character animation and action animation increased. Nobody was expecting high-quality animation like you see whenever Makima walks back in the early 1990s or earlier, for example.
-
I see, thanks for the remark! I noticed that you excluded anime fans and hardcore fans. I believe it was the clonky CGI that pushed they away?

I don't think anyone has been pushed away by the CG, as far as I can tell. I don't care for it but CG is what happens when you keep pushing and demanding higher-quality animation and more action on shorter-and-shorter production schedules.

New chapter out.

Those devil hunter wannabes are annoying. Chapter was a bit of a letdown because of them. Denji didn't get to use his experience and they're all stuck not doing anything useful.
-
Someone leaked on /a/ the summary for chapters 114, 115 and 116, last week.
Here's it for anyone interested on it
-
Well, that was short, but at least the copycat admited he's a fake (I haven't read the spoilers).
-
God, I love Asa. What a fucking loser. It's wild to see Denji now in the role of 'cool' person because I am so on the AsaDen train now. These two are going to be amazing.
-
And the leaks were confirmed 100%
