Chapter 940: Sparks of Rebellion

GREAT. CHAP.
Love that Tonoyasu is mysterious as anything.
His name contains 'Tono' which could indeed be an allusion to 'Lord' and Kaido did call Oden the 'Idiot Lord' so there's definitely a possibility that Tonoyasu is somehow -be it through time or other DF powers- related to Oden if not Oden himself having somehow survived the boiling. Called his relation to Toko and interestingly enough that would make Toko royalty ^O^

That is further enforced by the fact that both Shinobu and Kanjuro did not want to disrespect him, in case he was a lord.
I also played with the idea of Oden in my mind, but them not recognizing their previous lord might be too off. But maybe grandpa Kozuki? Nevermind, he would be too old, and then what Toko is Hiyori's aunt? D:

Pretty good chapter..
I'm really digging Ebisu, and Yasu is great so far. Nice to see some fun Usopp/Nami interactions too, it's been a while -
Finally got to read the chapter and it was by far the best Jump one this week. Another group of shadowed figures to look forward to and hopefully we'll be seeing Kawamatsu soon. This arc is getting better and better for me.
-
This was yet another build-up chapter, but it was a far more effective one than the last few weeks. Lots of new stuff came up to consider.
First up, I loved Usopp and Nami having some time to just chill. I think their friendship is one of the more underrated among the crew so getting this little bit of uninterrupted dialogue for the two of them was a joy.
Bingoh Bungoh and Bongoh resolves the last remaining question about Komurasaki/Hyori. She's absolved of all apparent wrongdoing. There's not turning back from this. I suppose it was inevitable, but I was slightly hoping for a more flawed female character. Meh. It's been handled well for what it is.
Yasu's scene was deeply suspicious. Hard to say what the old man is hiding at this point, but there's definitely something going on there. I don't quite buy Kanjruo and Shinobu not even questioning how he knows so much, just because he acts familiar. It's a bit odd to say the least. Not sure how the fact that he "sold" his daughter gels with his otherwise saintly depiction this week. Was there no less suss way to say she went off to work, or is there a cultural thing I'm missing here? And while we're at it, the renewed emphasis on Shinobu throwing blame for the leaks around raised by eyebrow. Goes hand in hand with the way she "accidentally" alerted the guards when she and Nami were sneaking around earlier. She's rising on my list of possible traitors. The only issue is the earlier implication that the traitor was on Zou and had a Vivre Card that Jack was using. Unless there's more than one…
Training continues in the prison mine. Giving Wanonians a different name for Haki was a nice worldbuilding detail, even knowing that Haki is a Japanese word to begin with. Not much to say about Luffy's training, and we might have guessed Hyo knew Roger from the way he recognised Rayleigh's name before. Luffy blasting the night guards with Conqueror's Haki was a fun moment though.
I didn't expect Caribou becoming a major player, but here we are. Raizo using his swamp ability to hide in the mine is really clever, I have to admit. How does he breathe in there though? Luffy's forgiveness mixed with Caribou's suspicion was hilarious and prettymuch fully sold me Caribou coming along for the ride.
The final pages of the chapter really emphasise the importance of the prison break and how it's likely going to turn the tides as all the samurai from the main plan get arrested. Big Mom arrives at last, begging the question of how it's all going down. I think Luffy has to fight her. She won't be at full strength due to memory loss, hunger, and possibly going on a hunger pang rampage, just to keep her pride as an Emperor intact while being used as a mid-boss, but Luffy has to master this new Haki by punching through previously unbreakable defences at least once. It's the proof of concept for the Kaido fight.
Really hoping we go straight into her prison invasion next week!

Not sure how I feel about Oden possibly being alive, given how important his death was (and that characters apparently witnessed it firsthand, with Momo recalling his dying words) and the lack of any Sabo-esque hints up to this point. But Yasu's definitely got something going on.
While you're in the thread, Greg, who do you think the traitor is?

Did Kinemon ever specify whether or not Sukiyaki was executed? I know Oden was, but dunno about Sukiyaki.

The last few chapters made me like Hyou, and this one made me finally like Yasu (or at least, find him interesting). The more Wanoese characters I like, the better.

The way I see it, its not a big deal to me because it wasn't another Pudding/Viola scenario where she goes from being antagonistic to an ally, and it already being obvious that those men were terrible. At no point was Komurasaki an antagonist to the alliance, or even knew that the Strawhats existed, before her "death" so I personally am completely fine with it.
Yasu's scene was deeply suspicious. Hard to say what the old man is hiding at this point, but there's definitely something going on there. I don't quite buy Kanjruo and Shinobu not even questioning how he knows so much, just because he acts familiar. It's a bit odd to say the least. He's completely aware and overly familiar with people that everyone assumes has been dead for 20 years, I can see why they just rolled with it. As for Toko, I thought the implication was that Toko would without question live a better life in the capital than in Ebisu Town, which is just a dreadful place to live to say the least. That, as well as the fact that she's helping Yasu to support the town makes it easy to frame Yasu selling her as a positive thing to do despite how incredibly complicated that must've been for the both of them. It's a good way, I thought, of showing us that the alleged saint has his own skeletons.
And while we're at it, the renewed emphasis on Shinobu throwing blame for the leaks around raised by eyebrow. Shinobu's been more of a help than a hinderance, including saving everyone's lives. Also people like to blame her for alerting those men, but eh that all started with them having clearly spotted Nami's spyglass to begin with. She even helped her escape, and Nami obtained the info anyhow.
@All:
Did Kinemon ever specify whether or not Sukiyaki was executed? I know Oden was, but dunno about Sukiyaki.
It was never stated what happened to him. I always wondered if maybe he died/passed away, and that gave Oden an opportunity to become Shogun, before Orochi went and ruined everything. But I'm not confident about that, since Oden committed a crime in leaving the border. Guess we'll see, but at any rate, I don't see how Yasu could be him.
The last few chapters made me like Hyou, and this one made me finally like Yasu (or at least, find him interesting). The more Wanoese characters I like, the better.
While I was enjoying them well enough, the only one I was really into was Kyoshiro. Now Hyou and Yasu have joined the list lol

Nah, Kimetsu flashback was better. But I didn't expect Yasu to become such a mystery. Especially the same chapter Hiyori is cleaned from her bad deeds.
I missed the bun, ban, bin sound effects that match the bad guys name. That was funny.
Big Mum has arrived in Udon, but we learn that there are 4 others prisons, so there is a chance they enter one where Luffy is not. Anyway Luffy is already hungry so they will have to solve that issue fast

I wouldn't mind seeing some more characters like Hancock, who are still objectively kinda shitty people who ally with the crew through circumstances. We get more than enough scummy men to work with. Caribou is immediately relevant.

See I figure it was a better life, or a "she wanted to help the town too" kind of thing, but there has to be a better way to phrase it than he sold her off. Remember how it was a whole thing a month ago that Komurasaki was evil because she scammed Bingoh Bungoh and Bongho so hard they had to sell their families? I dunno, having it put like that just rubs me the wrong way for a bit that's meant to be talking up Yasu's virtues.

I'd totally forgotten the spyglass was spotted first. A point for her, but it's still a bit suss how she kept making noises. I'm not going to count saving everyone from Kaido's breath attack in her favour though; she was as at risk as they were in that situation.
It's amazing how long Oda's kept this traitor plot thread in play without giving us any more real clues or evidence to work besides that a traitor exists. It's like I'm actually reading My Hero Academia!

Tonoyasu looks more like Orochi, he even has the same palm tree hair thing on the back. Maybe Yasu is the brother of Orochi.
One brother is evil and has the country starve, and one brother is kind and feeds the poor and weak. If Yasu has royal blood, he could be the next shogun since once orochi falls, momonosuke could still be too young for shogun position, since he is 8.
-
Also, here's something really nifty about Tonoyasu that you'll only get if you read it in Japanese.
Dunno what Stephen called him but his nickname from the people is '仏' or 'hotoke' in Japanese.
This could mean a few things like 'Buddha' but here is probably used to mean something more like 'Saint'.
Interestingly enough, in the sense of 'Buddha' it can also mean like a 'spirit' or ghost of those who have passed on.
AND a third crazy tinfoil-hat layer is that when you dissect the kanji for 'hotoke' (仏) into katakana it coincidentally leaves you with イ and ム or イム which reads, 'imu'.
べべーん!!!

Well it's the truth of what happened, why sugarcoat it? I put it in the same realm as that one panel of the woman getting ready to put her baby out of its misery, it helps sell the desperation of the Wano citizens.

All I'm saying is, it's extremely unlikely to be her.

Don't get me wrong, I understand why the thing happened and why the decision was made from a narrative perspective, but it just kinda doesn't work for me.
And for the traitor, well, it's not likely to be anyone at this point, given how little info we have. Any and all theories are likely to be just straw-grasping for a while yet.
-
Remember how it was a whole thing a month ago that Komurasaki was evil because she scammed Bingoh Bungoh and Bongho so hard they had to sell their families?
Bingoh selling his family to end up with Komurasaki didn't make me think "she's evil". It was more "what a bastard to sell is own family just to be with a woman he barely know just because she's beautiful…" And it's not like she forced him to that.

I had been worried that Caribou would have sold out Shirahoshi/Poseidon to get his freedom but it looks like he really has changed, if he was willing to go to jail for keeping his mouth shut. There's literally no one else he could get a better deal from for that information so if he's not giving it to Kaido, he's holding onto it for, what I hope, are the right reasons. Unless he's stupid enough to think he can get a ship and a crew that are capable of going back to Fishman Island where he's a known kidnapper and try his hand again. Which would explain him wanting to escape despite having no other support on the outside once he does so. But even if he did how would he manage to control Shirahoshi to put the Sea Kings at his disposal? Too many unknowns. I know Caesar Clown escaped but didn't exactly turn over a new leaf so this might be a similar thing where Caribou will just bugger off in the end and his knowledge won't come to light.
I liked Tonoyasu from the start, it was a little weird but once he took Zoro to that town where everybody else was smiling it kind of made sense that he wasn't that strange by comparison. He's probably partially masking the pain of losing his daughter with all that smiling and his charitable acts, and really, removing the Orochi regime from Wano will let him reunite with his daughter so why wouldn't he be excited to see it finally happening? He seems like one of the more prolific characters than a few of those that Franky kept running into while he was trying to find those blueprints the blacksmith master told him about, but I bet those minor characters will have more significance later on (otherwise that chapter would be almost a complete waste and that's just pathetic storytelling.) Tonoyasu might be the link between them, and others, who'll show the team that the number of allies they have aren't so small after all.
-
They better get Big Mom to eat the food she wants, or you know what's gonna happen the longer they make her wait.

I too thought Caribou was going to sell out Shirahoshi to Kaidou but I'm certain he's still holding the information for the wrong reasons. He basically thought to himself that it would be very valuable information for "that person" lol. I imagined Doflamingo, Kaidou or Black Beard but maybe none of them now. I imagine he'll let that info slip to who ever he answers to at some point. Could be during or after his team up with Luffy.
-
Mentioning it to Drake would be a big problem, if it turns out he's been a faithful government dog the entire time.
-
Chopper's plans seem to always be foiled by Luffy. Chopper brilliantly comes up with the plan for mirror Luffy's bursting out of the wedding cake, only for Luffy to foil it all by announcing his real self.
Now Chopper's brought Big Mom to the prison, hungry for Oshiriko. Queen is eating Oshiriko so we're lead to believe that Big Mom will fight him for it.
But what if Luffy is the one who ends up eating it all first? Insert Luffy vs amnesiac Big Mom fight.
- Second theory, Yasu is related to Hyo and Toko. Yasu is based on the character Hyottoko. It's revealed that Toko is his daughter, so could old man Hyo be his father? This could be a reason why Kanjuro does not fully recognize him, but think he is familiar, only knowing him as the son of Hyogoro.

Well Doffy's out of the picture (he may not know that) but that's true, Blackbeard or the other Yonkou would be the only others that would make it worth his while to spill the beans to. My hope is that it's Dragon he tells, and becomes a Revolutionary. Then Luffy doesn't have to deal with him anymore but he's still doing something for the right reasons. Although I have to wonder, how is his power active if he's supposed to have seastone on him? Or are Luffy and the old man not the only ones who had those replaced with decapitation collars?

I love to see the duo Nami and Usopp. Their interactions are aleays delightful

Besides him being Oden Ive also seen the idea he's rekated to orochi becayse of their design similarities, and an old japanese tale was referenced with a shogun and his brother

At the very least it was never ascribed to choppwr even though he did steal brulee
-
Pretty obvious he's Orochi's brother.
-
I fail to see design similarities between these two.
Yasu being related to Orochi also feels like overly complicating things. We already have the money laundrer, Kaido and Momo's and Hiyori's faction.

@Joy:
Pretty obvious he's Orochi's brother.
How did we go from it being a theory to it being "obvious"

Looks like next chapter will be on Friday , is it a new schedule or is it related to golden week? if that's the case the then scanlations will also be 2 days earlier.

Speaking of IMU, i thought this was quite interesting.
The new period of Japan contains アベ in it (Abe, (Shinzo Abe). How convenient.

Haha! Yeah, that's as much a stretch as the Imu thing (^o^)
Anyway! Him being Orochi's bro is totally on the table too. The important thing is he needs to be someone connected to the top of the Kozuki clan and also needs to be unrecognizable. The question is why is he unrecognizable. Is it a physical thing? Possibly! Is it a memory thing? Iffy at best. Is it a time quirk? Possibly. Is it a personality thing? Only if that mixes with a physical difference. We do know Tonoyasu and Toko to be happy so Oda could use that personality trait to his advantage.
-

Nice catch! On top of that, Tonoyasu (トの康) and Ieyasu Tokugawa (徳川家康), the first Shogun in Edo era, share the same kanji 康

Thanks sandman!
Yeah, that is very much why it's possible for him to not be Oden but someone related (blood or otherwise) to Oden or the Kozuki clan at a high level. -
Greg what's your opinion on Kyoshiro ?
-
Chapter comparisons! Just like last week, quite a bit, but most of them from the first half of the chapter.
- In his first sentence, in Jaimini's Box, Law says "I won't forgive you" for doubting the loyalty of his crew; in Mangastream and VIZ, he's saying "Don't forget" that. In the next sentence, in MS, he's saying that he can't have someone he doesn't trust watching his back on the line between life and death, and in JB, he says that alliances without trust may as well not exist, and he can't leave this in "your" hands. VIZ is basically a blend between the two: "If we can't trust each other in moments like this, then I can't expect to entrust my safety to you when the fighting is fierce!" Also, it seems like he's talking more to Shinobu than anyone else with these lines (and that would make the most sense), but since the original may not have made that clear, none of the translations do either.
- MS mistakenly has the Bingoh/Bongoh/Bungoh group saying that they "won't help" people in Ebisu Town, while JB and VIZ has them correctly saying they won't accept help from them. When Usopp reacts to this, the scanlations more had him saying that he heard angry voices coming from the town, but further clarifies in the official translation that this surprises him because "Since when do people get angry in Ebisu Town?" (which the MS version slightly hinted at, too). Also, when Usopp refers to the old lady who answers, he calls her "Azuki Baba" in JB, with a translator's note explaining that this means "the bean-grinding hag". MS just goes with "crazy spirit lady", but VIZ sticks pretty closely to the actual meaning, calling her the "old bean-washing hag".
- After the Bingoh trio yells at people for laughing at them, the next speech bubble in JB says "You three" have been exiled, implying that it was the laughing people who were saying this to them. In MS and VIZ (the latter of which says "Kicked out?!", and the former being similar), it instead seems like this is Nami/Usopp reacting to the old lady's words, especially since it repeats the wording she used. Also, when the lady explains that only those who can give the shogun money can live in the Flower Capital, she says "So" those guys must have done bad things (as if that explains it and that's how most people there are), and "But" that they were up to bad business in MS and VIZ, more implying not everyone is like that.
- MS has Nami/Usopp asking "why" Bungoh was using bribery (and the old lady responding with "so that", as in providing an explanation), while in JB and VIZ, they were just reacting to the info. Also, the scanlations say that the trio is living in Yasu's house, while in the official version, Yasu is helping them pick out a house.
- When Yasu notes that he didn't know about the ankle tattoo, his next sentence in MS is "That's the kind of allies you have", which is a bit ambiguous. In JB, he says "I'm sure that there are others who do not know of it, as well!", and in VIZ, "So those are even more comrades in waiting." On his way out, he calls Usopp "handsome" in the scanlations, but says "Looking sharp, boss!" in the official.
- In the official translation, the old lady states that Toko "had to be sold into a job in the capital". She calls Yasu their "Buddha" in MS, and "saint" in JB and VIZ.
- Hyo tells Luffy "don't force it" in MS and "rather than exerting power . . ." in JB. In VIZ, he says "Do not over-stress." Also, in the scanlations, Queen tells Luffy that he's taking down "too many" opponents, while in the official version, he says "Give the guy a break from the beatings already!"
- Caribou does say that he's Luffy's underling in all versions, but in the scanlations, he's asking if he can leave with Luffy on the latter's ship, which makes it sound a little ambiguous whether he's asking for a ride out of Wano or asking to actually be on their ship as a crewmember. The official makes it more clear that he means the former, asking for a "ride on the ship back home". Also in this version, when Luffy agrees and Caribou first reacts with "What?!", he quickly corrects himself to "I mean, what…a generous offer!"
- When Raizo reacts to Hyogoro stating that most of the prisoners in Udon rebelled against Orochi, he says in JB that "this place is their blind-spot", as in, implying that the bad guys don't realize that they have the perfect setup for a rebellion against them right here. In MS and VIZ, though, he's saying that they overlooked that/"Why didn't I think of it?!", instead saying that the alliance didn't realize that they could recruit here too. Also, in JB Raizo says that they need to break Kawamatsu out "at all costs", while in MS and VIZ, he plans to break Kawa out first.
-

i suppose that is they have the same goofie design.
The weird thing is that nobody knows him. Some power could be behind that even though i'm not fan of another memory devil fruit -
I'd like if Yasu was just some random dude who just likes helping people.
-
Was dragon Kaidou called a deity or something? Is it any similarity between what he was called and Tonoyasu's saint?
Would be nice irony if o toko is part of daimyo orochi's family and they unite both enemy daimyo families by having momonosuke marry o toko.
-
@S.C.:
I'd like if Yasu was just some random dude who just likes helping people.
That would be the most surprising thing Oda could do. And he won't do it.

I doubt a guy who knows the retainers (their looks from 20 years ago) and says their names so casually without honorifics(at least that how it appeared from the translations) when addressing them is 'just a guy' who likes to help people. He's obviously related to them somehow. The weird thing is how non of them recognized him. LOL it slightly gives off the feeling of Dressrosa's toys(for me at least).
-
Greg what's your opinion on Kyoshiro ?
Waiting to see if he used a DF power to 'cut' Hiyori in a non-lethal or if we're just supposed to take that he 'lightly' cut her.
-
I didn't know I had any excitement in my jaded heart for Caribou. It's weird - I'm actually happy he's back???
