Chapter 919: The Ruins of Oden Castle
-
-
The Kuwabara of One Piece
I like Kyoshiro's design.. hopefully he would be more relevant to the story more than Urashima did.. We need more badass Wano characters.
So it appears that the Minks were waiting for the Samurais for whole 20 years after their disappearance. Hence, no effort on meeting prior within those time period.. and when they said Oden was executed n days ago.. it was actually 20 years ago. wowe..Now, things does get complicated when it will be revealed that Kaido has been occupying Wano for over 20 years already.
Why does the WG doesn't have intel on this? Or they do have? Awesome chapter. -

"The thief they were talking about"
I'm right confused now. So is Shuten even a new character or just Law? Shutenmaru kept getting namedropped like he'd be something big but this chapter seems to attribute all the crap Luffy's gang went through in Bakura town to as a reaction to Law's theft. -
Hey, it's a little vain, but I deserve to say that I was right to have guessed at the possibility of time travel since 914. That's nice. Of course, there was no definitive proof to believe in this theory blindly, but it was a good catch nonetheless. I'm proud.
Now I'm interested to know what story Oda is writing for Wano. It shows a lot of potential for good and for bad… but you can't really try to write something amazing if you are not willing to be ambitious.
-
Good chapter. Enjoyed Law more than usual, as well as the classroom scene, and Kiku.
I almost feel like I’d enjoy ghosts more than time travel, but I’m open minded. I mean, I’ve imagined space travel in OP before (beyond Enel), so what’s the big diff? I just hope there’s no lame time traveling TWIST.

But people have been predicting time travel since Zou

!
Good chapter. That fake out with Kinemon maybe being a ghost almost got me.
I'm surprised Momonosuke is already here.
If it's just going forward in time it shouldn't cause any major inconsistencies.
-
But people have been predicting time travel since Zou
I didn't know that, but nice. That's an even greater catch, so kudos for them.
But I jumped on the train when there was more evidence to be something that I arbitrarily consider "statistically more relevant" as a possibility.
-
Did I miss something? Isn't Momo supposed to be arriving later with the second half of the minks? Are Inuarashi and his men in Wano already? If so, the story just completely swept past that.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
I didn't know that, but nice.
It was brought up as an option for Momo talking like he had met Roger.
-
Zoro?!?!?! Where did you run off to now??? =/

I think Momo claiming to have met Roger was enough evidence since we all know that wasn't gonna be a throwaway comment. There weren't really many other options to explain that. Main ones were Voice of All Things speculation and confusing Ace with Roger, both of which are pretty contrived. All the past few chapters did was essentially confirm our fears of bad plot device, but maybe Oda will give it a good enough spin to avoid the usual time travel issues.
-
The Minks doing Sulong pretty much confirmed 100%

There were many different ways to understand or to justify Momo's comment. Sure, you can throw time travel in the mix, but that's a pretty wild guess between a myriad of other possibilities with equal lack of evidence. There was no really solid theory back then, but it is good catch if someone had the gut feeling to believe in something that was right.
My recent theory wasn't much better, that's true… but there were enough more elements in the story now to become more than playing "russian roulette".

Assuming momo's mother had time powers, she might've been able to see the future as well. Sent them to the perfect time for all this to line up. W/ sulong, this gives them the powers to take on most of kaido/orochi army fodder.
Now it seems Luffy stands a chance against kaido.

Do you mean time travel is bad plot device? I mean DF powers exist. Nero Nero already shows time can be affected. And laws of physics says traveling forward in time is easier than back (supposedly).
Anyway, this also hints that Kiku is strong, so she better show up or gfto. This arch is going to be lit. HOPPEFULLLY oda shows us more of Wano. more towns and what not. I don't care if we stay in this arc for 5 years b/c i'm enjoying it so much.
I'm also shocked WH or Rogers old crew didn't come to Oden's aid. Assuming Kaido was weaker 20 yrs ago, shows that Oden truly was a force to be reckoned w/ if it took Orochi and Kaido to take him.
-
It's really convenient that moss head runs off right as swirly brow shows up.
-
Yahoo! Man what an awesome chapter! I've been so hooked on Smash Bros discussion since June I've barely been able to talk about One Piece outside of my real life circles. Ridley has that kind of power! But I do remember ever so often reading people's theories about time travel. I brushed it off entirely but now it looks like people were on to something and the best part is it didn't just come from no where. Just the way I likes it Oda.
So glad to see the crew mostly united as well!
Is that teacher a 3rd Snake fruit user? Doesn't seem like a Smile.

Noro Noro affects speed, not time. But I mean time travel is generally horribly misused in fiction in general in such a way that creates a lot of plot holes, implications, and why-don't-they-just's. It works better when it's one of the main themes of a work. I'm not confident Oda can do it well. And I think devil fruits work fine in concept, but they've been getting more repetitive or underutilized.
-
Gotta respect all the poop humor in this chapter. It makes it a pretty solid One Piece chapter. Well guess in this situation it wasn't solid. Hahahaha! Poop Joke!!

If Momo's mom had the fruit, then its effectively taken out of the equation for this arc and won't be causing any plot holes. And foreward-only time-travel doesn't cause any problems at all.
-
oda's biggest challenge yet: writing a good time travel story.

I would think Shutenmaru is probably an actual person considering Kiku recognized and reacted to the name. Maybe Shutenmaru committed thefts previously, so when Law and his crew also stole from them in what was actually a separate incident, that was blamed on Shuten as well?
-
Hello, I'm here to paste this thing and go

The fruit will only be reborn.
-
I guess Oda must have planned this through quite well. He waited almost 500 chapters to introduce us to Rayleigh and brought us a guy that wants to see Laboon for 50 yrs.
Sounds cheesy, but have a Little trust, Folks. -

That's why I'm saying I hope there's a twist like that that keeps it from being too big a thing. Though that would bring to question who has the ability currently, or where the fruit is.
-
Well it does not have to be time travel like Back to the future etc. My guess is that they were in suspended animation for 20 years due to some power.
Man it's been a long time since all the strawhats we're together and there are just three missing now.
And i wonder how long it will take for Zoro to get a chance to look at that sword … He'll probably get in while in some serious future battle.
-
I would think Shutenmaru is probably an actual person considering Kiku recognized and reacted to the name.
People also reacted to Zoro because he killed the magistrate. Law and co have been in Wano for a few weeks now.
-
Here's my take :
The power to push people forward in time is an ultimate, one time only move just like Law's immortal surgery. Even Law's more broken power doesn't seem to be a problem to the story so i don't think this sending people to future will be a problem either.
Also Kaidou will be defeated by sending him to the far future where the world is nothing but a wasteland. You heard it here first! (maybe)
-
Well my worst fears about the plot of this arc just came true
I sure hope he ties up the restrictions of the time travel pretty fast and doesn't let it turn into a huge tangled mess of plot holes and "why didn't they just ____ to fix everything?"
Well I guess if I keep my expectations at 0 I at least can't be let down. :ninja:
-
That rokurokubi is hot!
-
If the wife was the one who sent them in time (which seems to be implied), I don't see any issues with this and explains quite a bit on the Samurai's behaviour. If anything, Oda has been planning this since the very beginning.
Interesting plottwist for sure. I wonder who the other Samurai are, considering they mention nine and we don't have 9 currently.
-
It seems like the time travel business was related to that curse.
Remember that oda has already pulled time travel off in a sense. It was so well done that people have completely forgotten about it! I'm talking about Brooke. He is from a different generation suspended in time
-
To find a way to reach inside…to wield the hands unfolding time...
Fun chapter. I actually wasn't prepared for Tama to leave, she was a sweet kid and I'm looking forward to seeing her again.
I had predicted that Shutenmaru would be Law ever since he was first name-dropped. But until Law pulls an "I know him, he's me" or something like that there's still a possibility he's a different person.
The time travel stuff is cool, it raises a lot of questions about when certain events happened (namely, was Kaido in the picture 20 years ago? Or did the samurai run afoul of him after time traveling?) But it's a great hook, I'll give it that. Hopefully this can develop well.
I was surprised to see Momonosuke on Wano so quickly, honestly kinda didn't like it at first but we'll see if he gained anything useful enough from the elephant to justify his transition here.
I guess Oda must have planned this through quite well. He waited almost 500 chapters to introduce us to Rayleigh and brought us a guy that wants to see Laboon for 50 yrs.
Sounds cheesy, but have a Little trust, Folks.Oda has done a pretty great job of setting up this plotline ever since Punk Hazard. We've seen Doflamingo's pursuit of Momo, Momo viewing pirates as hulking giants, Momo wanting to play "shogun" on the Sunny, plus the stuff on Zou with Momo speaking about Inu's and Neko's fallout like he had firsthand knowledge of it and mentioning that he had met Roger.
There's also an instance in Punk Hazard where Kin'emon expresses an intense hatred for dragons, which I think will also come into play eventually. And I've believed for a while that Momo's "perverted" tendencies are just his way of masking his desire to be with a motherly figure after losing his mom. So with all that said, I fully trust any time travel shenanigans for now.
-
Since Oda showed us only 8 graves last chapter, I counted again the graves this time. Excluding Oden and his wife there are really nine graves, BUT there is a fourth one which is shaped like Momo's Oden's and Momo's mom's grave. 7 retainers and 4 (!) lord-graves.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Zoro obviously got lost and is running right into Jack and co right now...
-
@Kaido:

Holdem said Shutenmaru had a gang of bandits that resided on Atamayama/something mountain, is that the mountain Oden's castle is on? Can't remember if it was named or not
-
He went and did it after all. Hope he keeps the concept simple enough not to cause too many paradoxes.
Guess Zoro and Sanji's reunion will get postponed indefinitely.
I'm kinda bothered by some stuff, as always in every media. Fact Luffy couldn't just mention Ace is his bro, Zoro can't take a look at Luffy's sword for long enough to recognize the similarity to his own, Law has to be mysterious and vague for suspense (nobody should have fallen for that), and Zoro has to wander off on his own again and nobody is bothering to take a look or maybe sniff him out (Chopper). It's much too sloppy for my taste, even if I know some of them will have a timely and satisfying revelation and resolution.
But like I said, not just a problem with OP.
-
-
I'd really love Oda to stop teasing us about the Nidai Kitetsu.
Orochi two-blade style sounds cool! -
Oh sweet. Both Robin AND A Rokurobi in one chapter.
Oh and Time Travel and stuff too. Cool.
-
So we got a Dressrosa bit where everyone loves the Shogun but people outside Flower capital hates the Shogun so if the Shogun is defeated, I could forsee a possible civil war.
Oh and how they talk about isolation just reeks of the political situation America is going through right now. One student blurt out that isolation protects the country from outside "evuls" and how they remarked that foreign countries wants what Wano has. Globalism fears, everyone? I wonder if Oda is going to squeeze more of these themes to match the current situation the world is in right now when dealing with America. Let's see how this plays out
-
I guess Oda must have planned this through quite well. He waited almost 500 chapters to introduce us to Rayleigh and brought us a guy that wants to see Laboon for 50 yrs.
Sounds cheesy, but have a Little trust, Folks. There is no proof Brook was planed to be tied with Laboon from the start.
so the prophecy speaks of 9 samouries but we know only 5 so they are 4 missing. Kinemon is still hiding things :-)
-

That's a good catch. Grandparent/Oden's sibling/some child that bought the farm early so Momo was their try #2?
-

Where does the picture of Kinemon falling into the hole come from?
-
There is no proof Brook was planed to be tied with Laboon from the start.

No proof? Oda himself said he planned out Brook while drawing Laboon
-
@joekido:

Oda's been setting up Wano since well before Trump said he would run. The opening of the borders is one of the most pivotal moments in Japanese history.

Of course, I'm talking about one student saying something that reminds me of these things.
-

Brook's original design had a cowboy hat. So "Yorki" in the original flashback was supposed to be Brook.
so the prophecy speaks of 9 samouries but we know only 5 so they are 4 missing. Kinemon is still hiding things :-)
The 9 are going to be the ninja-mink-pirate-samurai alliance: Luffy, Law, Neko, Inu, Momo, Kinemon, Kanjuro, Raizo, Okiku.

Punk Hazard I think.
-
so if I got this right, Orochi let Kaido into Wano so that with him it would not be possible for said prophecy to happen. At least on his mind.
