How do you not end with the giant wave??? HOW???? Because flaming arrows aimed for the locker room is soooo much more exciting…

They always cover 13-15 pages, if you want them to end witgh giant wave then they need to cover 19 pages so its too much, simple…@Kaido:

Thoroughly enjoyed that! The main highlight for me is Katakuri's blue Armament Haki. The episode didn't feel slow at all to me, while the last episode did. Luffy's situation ALREADY looks far more hopeless than vs Lucci, that's a big reason I enjoy this fight so much.

              Croc or Enel would never.

Wanna see the "ancient civilization destroyed" thing done really well? FFXIV did a great take on it. The bar's high for One Piece to beat.

This is the first cold opening the anime has had in months. Really well executed, too.
I am enjoying the portrayal of Katakuri in the anime. His advantage in both observation haki and devil fruit utilization is shown off well here, making him a ferociously menacing force. Ishizuka returned again to give the beatdown his impactful touch with the smear and smoke effects.
Did anyone else hear new music during Pudding's arrival at the Cacao Island kitchen?

At the rate the chapters are being adapted, I'll make some predictions for the cliffhangers for 853 and 854.

! Episode 853 will end with Katakuri kicking Luffy as he's talking to his crew through a mirror shard. It shatters. Dramatic music plays. TO BE CONTINUED.
! Episode 854 will end with Luffy caught in Katakuri's flowing mochi right as he is about to activate Gear Fourth. Katakuri sees into the future. Says it's interesting. Dramatic music. TO BE CONTINUED.

The anime FINALLY made the Haki Gear Third attacks look COOL.

lol at Luffy being Yamcha'd, pose and all.

Well executed episode all around (well mostly; cliffhanger problems are not going to be going away apparently), which is just going to make the break next week all the more painful. The most important part though? Sanji's silly Bob's Burgers face being faithfully translated from page to screen.

Did anyone else hear new music during Pudding's arrival at the Cacao Island kitchen?

Nope, no new music in this episode.

AYA KOMAKI IS SO AWESOME! No wonder you guys consider her a 4 Star director. Not to mention YonkouProductions speaking highly of her also.

So far I'm impressed with Yokoyama's output, considering the well executed elephant gun clash he animated at the very beginning of the episode.

For an AD who was regarded as one of the weakest a couple of years ago, his episodes have been on point lately, mainly due to him being assigned to very important episodes (like Luffy vs Sanji) and having a lot of good key animators working under him.

Regarding Komaki, there's nothing to say really. Top tier episode director = top tier episode.

Next episode we have Ueda and Shingaki…that's a yikes for me, but we never know.

Monkey D. D. Ragon! So beastly he got two D's in his name!

Ever since I started following the anime (around the start of Totto Land), this is probably the first episode that I feel like it is totally acceptable.

It is almost a relief to watch an OP episode that doesn't seem to a person trying to move while carrying 1ton weights on each leg. Usually every scene or sequence takes at least twice as long as it should, but here everything was paced exactly as the scene demanded and you can feel the episode flowing. And the biggest effect of that was FINALLY having the comedy bits right! I can't tell how enormously annoyed I am when I see the anime completely screwing the timing of the comedy (something I particularly care about. I can already foresee how annoyed I will be when if they ruin the oooooctopus entrance), so, yeah, I really really liked this episode.

I don't know how many pages this episode covered and this time I don't even care because for the first time it doesn't feel like they were trying to cover the possible minimum, but simply doing what felt proper and natural within the 23min.

Katakuri is a beast. That last beast down was fantastic in the animation and direction.

Thats partially because we didnt have any scenes of a chase.

Good episode. Content-wise, it’s a little boring because most of the episode is focused on the Pudding storyline, which isn’t great yet. Very impressed with the direction and animation these last few episodes; they’re adapting one o the best fights in OP well. Thank god the a-team is back from working on the special.

Then why was the animation and art so weak for the two months or so before the special was released? I thought I saw someone else here saying they had some of the anime crew working on the special.

Studio Guts is actually part of the anime's normal rotation (any episode AD'd by Yusuke Isochi, Shingo Fujisaki, or going further back Yukiko Nakatani is a Studio Guts episode) so with them taking time away to work on the special the rest of the staff was spread more thinly. They tweeted that they're already back to work on the anime, so I expect to see them return to the rotation in two months-ish.

                                          So, no episode this week?

Seems that way. Ep 853 scheduled for next Sunday:

Another fantastic episode to end up what has been a fantastic batch of episodes.

On the animation front, Kenji Yokoyama started the episode with a really solid adaptation of the Elephant Gun clash from the manga, nice to see someone whose worked on the show for 20 years can still produce something worthwhile like that. Though not as notable, I found his work for the middle duration of the fight, with the Grizzly Magnum and the axe to be also extremely solid. Aside from that, the most notable bit of animation from this episode by a mile came from Katsumi Ishizuka, whose work this episode, though more conservative than his usual output, was still absolutely fantastic, very much hope he continues doing bits of action for the big fight.

Directionally, Komaki did an absolutely stellar job, with her unique sense of lighting and compositing, as well as timing, giving every scene they impact they needed. I particularly liked her use of lighting in the Katakuri vs Luffy section of the fight done by Ishizuka. Her decision to surround Katakuri in ominous coloured lighting, really gives him some really presence on screen.

Overall, couldn't be happier with how things turned out, with the exception of the cliff hanger they chose to end on. Seemed like a very strange place to end the episode considering.

Not sure what to expect from 853. I thought I saw Dennis Cablao in the preview, and handling the Luffy vs Katakuri fight no less, but I think next episode will almost certainly be a drop in quality.
