Chapter 916: A Great Sumo Match in The Wano Country
-
-
-
Okay, chapter comparisons! Not too many today, luckily.
- The name of Urashima's attack that he tries to use on Kiku is called "Higan Palm" in Mangastream, "Equinox Harite" in Jaimini's Box (with a TN explaining what a "Harite" is), and "Far Bank Slap" in VIZ.
- In the scanlations, Kiku starts to say that Urashima's not the kind of man who would use that attack on a woman, before he proves her wrong by starting to attack her. However, in the official translation, she comments about him (since he's already started to take that attacking pose), "But in the end, you were no better than a man who would strike a woman."
- Also in the scanlations, Luffy's counterattack is the Gum Gum Tsuppari (with both versions including TNs of what that means). In the official version, Luffy calls it the Gum Gum Sumo Strike.
- The JB version states that Luffy has "a complete victory" over Usopp (which seems to imply just one sumo battle where Luffy totally dominated), while MS and VIZ state that he's "undefeated" vs. Usopp (which suggests they've possibly wrestled multiple times).
- After Urashima tells Luffy to get out of his way because he needs to crack Kiku's head open, MS has Luffy say "I don't care what you want to do!", while in JB and VIZ, he says "I said you can do whatever you want!". Then in response to Luffy saying Urashima won't beat him, the latter responds in the MS version with just "I'm Wano's…", which is quite vague. In JB he says "I am this country's number one", and in VIZ it's "I am the greatest sumo wrestler in all of…"
- In the scanlations when Kiku wonders what to do, Zoro tells her to stop spacing out, and that he won't watch her back. However, in the official, he says "Don't play coy. You don't need my help.", which is more of a compliment.
- Luffy mishears Holden's name as "Balding" in MS, "Holpig" in JB, and "Bolldeboo" in VIZ.
-
What the heck is Bolldeboo? I can't see the play on world in that.

Thank you very much!
I like Okiku's Viz version much more since she's more honest there.
I don't get 'bolldeboo' neither.

Picturing Luffy and Usopp having sumo wrestler matches was very humorous. It was odd how the confident Samurai Girl now seems to be moving in and out of being unsure and indecisive. I'm not sure but I don't think I like that. Overall this chapter was all right and got the plot moving along just fine. It wasn't amazing but I guess it didn't need to be.
-
Great chapter to take a break on, IMO. Luffy's whomping ass like a boss (surprised we haven't heard a peep out of anybody on Wano who'd actually stand a chance against him if he was completely cutting loose) and yet Tama's still in jeopardy. It's good that there's still a sense of peril (even if we know nothing bad is really going to happen to a kid) despite nothing yet present to make Luffy really sweat it in combat. Quite a twist from WCI where they got into serious trouble right off the bat. I wonder how else they're going to differ, these two Yonkou arcs.

Instead of running for their lives most of the arc, they will actually confront the enemy and beat them.

Well, they got imprisoned and caught several times too. Plus new allies that we weren't aware were already going to be there, so it looks like Wano isn't going to have at least that latter surprise since we know basically everybody who wants a piece of Kaido by now. X Drake showing up won't be that surprising, for instance. Kidd somehow breaking out of prison and showing up with Killer and Apoo wouldn't be an insurmountable stretch either…

Big Mom Pirates = truest decimators, hunted down their prey and successfully kicked them out
Beasts Pirates = can't even handle a couple pirates invading their turf, didn't even notice their friends already snuck in -

Holdem looks like he does scummy things on dates. Not abusive, but scummy nonetheless. I picture him doing things like offering to split the bill at a restaurant, but when it's time to pay, making his date pay for the both of them and saying "I thought you said you'd pay", claiming to not remember his offer to split the bill.

This might be a stupid question, given the day it is already but, no chapter this week?

Yes. Oda break, this week.

No chapter and No anime episode this week hehehe.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Watch law intervene this week…and were back playing frog walking metal gear.

At least luffy did confront the enemy and beat BM's 2 top commanders. It's more on his allies and crew running and ….baking. That is the problem, for how much action luffy got( 11 hours with cracker, 8-10 with katakuri, enraged army battle, wedding) the SH crew and allies didn't really fight, they run.

Was Cracker the 2nd tier commander of Big Mom's army? I know there are four Sweet Commanders and Katakuri was #1 but of the other three, what was their ranking? I can't even remember who the other one was besides Cracker and Snack.
And they fought Big Mom herself quite a bit, which in and of itself was damn impressive (I really, REALLY wish we'd gotten to see Brook's solo effort against her). And Jimbei standing up to her on the ship and showing off his Sharkskin Haki…beautiful. But the point wasn't to fight, it was to nab Sanji and bugger off. So in that sense, we got more fighting than was intended by them anyway. And it served to show us the terrifying power of a Yonkou's crew, so now that they're facing a crew where the subordinates are primarily strength-based and not tricky like Brulee, Oven and Katakuri, we're likely to get much more fighting, albeit less complicated.
Just had a thought...does anyone think that Nami will use her fake name from Thriller Bark as her Wano alias if she and the others have also gone undercover?

Smoothie, the longleg. Who, going by bounty, should be the 2nd strongest, but alas, is a pretty lady, so a real fight is a no-go.

@S.C.:

And there's no way to actually gauge it without seeing them in action if it wasn't explicitly stated. Damn. Although one could argue if she grew to her maximum size, her overall strength rating should technically put her at a big advantage depending on her base level strength.

I have to say, because, if I say it enough IT WILL HAPPEN (sooner rather than later): I hope we see a Calamity or another Kaido crew higher-up this week. They don't even have to do anything, I just want to see an introduction box + appearance + bounty.
These Gifters and Pleasures are doing nothing for me right now, even Holdem who I assume is a much stronger Gifter, and I say this as someone whose favorite Yonko is Kaido. lol

I sure hope so, because even Hawkins couldn't stand up to Luffy if he was really pulling out all the stops.
Also, was it ever stated that Kaido wanted SMILEs just to make his crew stronger or just because he likes the aesthetic of beasts? Because he's really not getting quite what he probably bargained for with them all being these ridiculous freaks.
-
I imagine this is the time law and luffy convince hawkins to join them. Holdem and him can't hold law, luffy, zolo for long.
Still wierd how it works in their crew, it's like kaidou and his men don't talk. Hawkins and the rest don't tell him about SH in wano, kaidou doesn't tell them about yonkou luffy.

I think once Holdem is brought down and Hawkins betrays, which is obviously going to happen soon, that's going to "trigger an alarm" so to speak to Kaido, his much stronger people, and all those under him (including Shogun Orochi). Once Holdem is down, Wano Country and its rulers will become alerted to Luffy and his presence and start to get serious. It will probably be the kick off point to when stuff in Wano Country starts to move in a serious direction.
Also… I mean... Luffy is really just a Yonko because of "Fake News" Morgans report, I don't think he's an ACTUAL Yonko yet. That's how it sounded to me anyway. It's just Big News Morgans amping up his report of what he witnessed during Whole Cake Island and giving his opinion (even with the World Government sanctioned bounty raise).

Well in fairness Morgans also doesn't know a lot of the stuff Luffy and co. have done (I imagine Franky's would skyrocket if they knew he was responsible for blowing up Vegapunk's old lab and destroying such valuable work and such) so even if some of his report was embellishment, it wasn't entirely untrue. But then, they dismissed Luffy's 30M bounty in Jaya and it came back to bite them, so this will probably be another underestimation that will make them rue the day he showed up on their doorstep.

Also. Do we have an early chapter this week? I thought, and could of sworn, I heard that somewhere.
If so, does that mean we should be getting earlier spoilers (like tomorrow)?

This chapter comes out in Japan earlier yes. I'm hoping for spoilers tonight. I had the chart on my old phone that showed the schedule, we get 1 or 2 early chapters after this one as well.
-
I'd love for there to be a chapter tomorrow!!
