Chapter 916: A Great Sumo Match in The Wano Country
-
hehhehe im 1st..
-
Seeing the cover made me realize how much I miss Franky’s original hairstyle/design. Prefer over the timeskip one for sure.
-
Damn, I've never seen Hawkins with such a serious / stressed look. Some shit is going down
-
This chapter was a ton of fun. Luffy's behavior in the ring was rather entertaining, and I dunno, everything just feels increasingly exciting.
-
@Kaido:

I agree. The spoilers initially made it sound pretty tame, but as you read the chapter, it really dawns on you that shit is finally starting to hit the fan.
-
A fun chapter like this is exactly what I needed. Usagibeard is my new favorite background character. Holdem losing his house got a laugh out of me.
I think my earlier negativity/pessimism about this arc is gone now. I think I'll have fun for a while.
-
"I'm great at sumo!" (Luffy's record is beating Usopp once) lmao
Was hoping Zoro would do the sumo, instead. However, Luffy using the gear 3 sumo moves was really fun.
Otama can just wave a kijidango in front of the lion's nose to get free, I'd guess.
From Beppo's pleading not to be left behind, it sounds like Law is joining the fray.
-
Someone might complain about pacing or we didnt get a super huge cliffhanger but damn the action and comedy were so on point I dont even care
-
When it's time for Boobs Nami gets the focus. I like how the letter kind of look like tatoos on her leg. Luffy is laying some dangerous game and Sanji needs to get with the program and show some abs.
I don't like how easily Luffy can defeat the sumo. The contry was presented as a stronghold and I would like to see that reflected in the general level. I had the same problem with the haki burst last time. Oda is not doing a good job at portraying the attributes known of Wano by the world.
Wasn't the whole point of the lion that he doesn't listen and that's why Holdem need Tama? It's weird that they are cooperating.
Law is to far to intervene so I guess it will be a confrontation between 2 headliners and 2 worst generation members.
-
I love the cover but the view angle of Robin's arm looks strange.
-
The art was just beautiful in the chapter and I enjoyed the whole match against Urashima. Really well choreographed moves. It's also nice to see things getting more intense by the end of the chapter.
Kiku left me a bit perplexed though, but I guess she was just pretending to be fragile and innocent in order to hide her true background and intentions (but could not hold back at the end of the last chapter). Anyway, if I'm right, I'm very interested in her background. By the way, I'm also liking her design more and more. Is it just me who thinks that her eyes are very japanese-like?
Another one that I'm starting to enjoy is Holdem. I laughed at his joke last chapter, but I was not sure about his character in general until now. I just find it odd that he is not aware of Luffy's existance. Anyway, nice to see that Hawkins and Law are coming to the fight too. I'm hyped.

I get what you're saying, but I like it for basically that reason. We finished a very long arc where Luffy spent most of his screentime struggling and/or outclassed. These early fights (aside from Hawkins) brought back the feeling that Luffy, compared to most of the world, is crazy strong.
The Lion only acted up last chapter because Holdem hit it first. It seems docile enough otherwise.

i suppose you are perplexed because she is herself too. From what i understand she has no experience as a samourai and maybe learned it from books. So she doesn't know exactly how to behave. I don't think she is faking being innocent

I think it's that she is trying to keep a low profile and not push boundaries but will do so if it's necessary or if something triggers her. Like how Urashima called everyone "garbage compared to him". I think it's definitely a part of her characterization and imo that's a lot more interesting than woman who is as tough as zoro but with no personality. I can see why people are apprehensive with Oda but I think this is going back to the whole "Japanese customs and sacred manners" thing I feel Oda is partially challenging in this arc
-
i'm surprised some people expected Yokozuna to be strong. Everything about him sounded fodder to me
-
So what are the odds of Tama being saved by Law's room? 100%?
-
Urashima did clash evenly with base Luffy, which isn't that bad compared to characters like Spartan.
-
i'm surprised some people expected Yokozuna to be strong. Everything about him sounded fodder to me
The dude straight up ran away from Zoro according to last chapter, not to mention what Kiku did. Anyone actually disappointed frankly only have themselves to blame. Not to say that he can't/won't play a role later on, but seeing people match him up with characters like Jinbe was a real head-scratcher.
-
Oda must have had fun drawing this chapter. All the badass stances of Luffy, the 1st Panel Shows the total humiliation of Urashima. I could go on, but you can see it for yourself.
One of Kaidou's goons had Kind of the same metal-jaw like Jack. And another one sports the same stupid haircut like Jack. Quite after Luffy's finishing blow. -
One thing that surprised me at first was Luffy's ambivalent attitude toward Urashima attacking Kiku and only challenging him for fun. But he doesn't really know Kiku at all, so I thought it was a neat change of pace to see his more selfish attributes in action.
-

What do you mean by "no experience as a samurai"? Like she's not aware of the codes/bushido or do you think she was not trained in the sword? I doubt that any of the options anyway. Last chapter made it pretty clear to me that she is experienced and portrays a very sophisticated technique. I'm not saying that she is super strong or anything like that (because you can't trust Oda when the character is a woman), but she's no n00b.
Also, it's pretty clear that she has presented two distinct personalities, one that is overly timid and other that is very outspoken, proactive and badass. And then you pay attention to what we know about her: she arrived in Okoboro only 1 month ago, she carries a notebook around with information about Kaidou's subordinates, she is a samurai. She's clearly acting like a spy and hiding her intentions to not raise suspicion.

Yes, I do think Kiku's backstory will have a feminst tone to it, something about she defying the status quo when she tried to become a samurai.
-
Urashima is pretty strong.
Now the only question is whether he'll have a change of heart as the arc goes on or double down, as his status is gone completely now.
Anyway's I liked the Great Sumo Fight, but it makes me wish One Piece art/storytelling was still at Oda's peak.
It lessens the impact of Wano as a whole. -
Chapter was far better than expected
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Seeing the name of the character is Mari... It could be a woman...
My kunoichi in coming?
-
I can't tell what the fuck is up with Kiku. Is her gag that she wants to be a samurai but because of social conditioning she often defaults to demure lady mode?
We've already had the dueling personalities gag with Pudding less than like 30 chapters ago so it seems overdone, but I can't take Kiku seriously if this isn't the case after the "I can't believe you'd hit a woman" comment.
If the problem is she has to keep cover as a spy then she's way too internally collected for that, like when she's begging Zoro for orders. -
Sneak peak footage of O-Kiku from the next issue
She's turning out to be a hidden gem character. Hopefully she continues to stand on her own (mostly) without falling behind and needing people to save her constantly Rebecca-style.
Incidentally –- Why is this roof thing just floating there?
I didn't notice it last chapter but it's definitely been there.. Just.. floating..

We are only dealing with lower ranks. Luffy just came from defeating 2 of the top3 commanders in Big moms crew you honestly think hes gonna have trouble??
Even Hawkins is telling his men that they are no match for him, because he knows.

-
something doesn't really seem right about okiku and her switching back and forth between "kyaaa" woman and badass samurai
also, it strange that sumo is known outside of wano since it's an isolationist country, but i suppose that's just real life conditioning my idea of the sport..probably it's really popular on wano but not native of the place or an almost exclusive like real sumo.
other than that, some good comedy and i liked the reference to the sumo fight with usopp from that special
-

Feels obvious to me that she's trying to hide her true nature as much as she can, because otherwise she'd get in trouble. There's just circumstances that have her show her real face every now and then. She's a real badass.
-
Am i the only one that wants to eat that One Piece burger?

so he was gonna take the attack of yokozuna head on just to keep apparances? because if luffy didn't intervene seem that's what was going to happen..she has her hands on her face and the sword is back in the sheath

Nami looks like one of those IG model lol

I think it was launched up instead of floating it.
-
Nami looks like one of those IG model lol
at this point "likes to dress with very little" it's basically a character trait of hers
even in promo and bonus material she is always the one wearing "less"
-
Once again, a chapter that the spoilers failed to do justice. A truly enjoyable read. Felt quite bad for Tama's situation.

I could have gone for a Skypeia thing. Strong people all around but Luffy was still mostly having a chill time. He was constantly challenge but he was pretty much on top. Or let him explore without fights. Or don't have him fights champion or that supposedely really strong place. Or at minimum don't have him use conqueror's haki to take care of business.
I guess "Wano's citizzens are protrayed to weak" will be my new "Big Mom's pirates are to imcompetent".
-

Yeah the ambivalence from Luffy was great BUT I read it differently. First, Luffy was 100% confident he was going to beat Urashima, so he had no need to talk about protecting her.
Also She's already proved that she's strong af(plus luffy can sense power levels apparently), so there was no need to protect her. Its like Luffy going on about saving Zoro from the big bad man. Plus even Zoro told her he wouldn't protect her coz he's acknowledged she's more than capable of taking care of herself.
Anyway this was a hella fun chapter to read. I'm beginning to warm to this arc. The humor and story has been on point. We definitely need to get the hawkins alliance started already though.
-
We are only dealing with lower ranks. Luffy just came from defeating 2 of the top3 commanders in Big moms crew you honestly think hes gonna have trouble??
Even Hawkins is telling his men that they are no match for him, because he knows.
Luffy didn't beat a nobody. He casually destroy one of the champion of Wano. After casually fainting a bunch of samurais at the entrance. Of course they are going to be stronger people than that around. I'm not scared that Luffy won't have There's a yonko crew around and Kaido himself. My porblem is on delivering on the whole strong country thing Oda set up. It's supposed to a place where the average is much higher than usual and it is not reflected at all. There might be some resistant at some point but it will the top elite and that doesn't really match the whole strong country Oda was talking about.
To me it's like when Oda went with "Haki is hard" or "Big Mom is the queen of information" or have Doffly goes "I will take strawhat seriously". I hate when you make those freaking statement and then you don't do anything to reflect them and people have to spin facts to fit your narrative. If you are not going to deliver don't freaking make the statement.
Oda went "Wano is a country made of strong people. But are getting the same construction as any place where there is a bunch of weakling and a couple of strong ones. I believe that's an awful way to handle it and I will point it as such. Does it euin the whole experience? No(the Big Mom thing was much worse). But is it a problem in the construction of the arc? Yes.

Big guys in One Piece will always be fodder. Always. Show me a big guy who didn't end up being fodder in the story so far.
Also why are you equating the citizens strength to the Military strength of a country. Wano citizens can definitely be weak af, but its the samuria that are a force to be reckoned with.
Wasn't it implied that Kaidou only took over the country coz the Samuria quit or something like that.
Personally I'm enjoying Luffy the Pirate King effortlessly wrecking fodder left, right and center. Its fun and its building the myth and legend of Luffy, the pirate King and Sumo Champion of the World.
-
What the hell are you talking about? Zoro literally says im not gonna watch your back and shes like ok and starts slicing people.
Huh? I'm talking about when she twice went "Oh no what should I do Zorojurou? Tell me what to do"
!
"He's not the type of man to USE IT on a woman" (obviously referring to the Harite technique) is pretty far from "I can't believe you'd hit a woman."
Forgive my paraphrasing but I don't see the big difference. Both are saying she didn't think he'd be the type of man to strike a lady.
-

It also did to me and it was a worry. But criticizing prior to this chapter would have been premature.

I though I had seen the weirdest ecchi baddassness with the boobs dodging but that's a new one.
Where is that from?
-
Very nice chapter overall. I was worried for a moment about Kiku with the whole men not hitting women, but it seems Oda is going with 50% gag, 50% inner conflict and i'm fine with that.
What i found really interesting was Hawkins' reaction, he looked a little too invested for someone who just recently joined a crew he obviously doesn't care about (using members as voodoo meat shields). The way i read this, it can only make sense if like Law, he's watching Luffy blowing their chance at blindsiding Kaidou.
He had his little spar with them to gauge their strength, and i suppose he was planning to think on how to approach them, to include them / be included in the plan to bring down the emperor, but then …. Luffy happened. -

can't really say i follow your reasoning
even assuming that wano has an higher average in terms of strong people, there will still be people on the lower level that can be easily disposed of by someone that right now it's in the top 20 if not top 10 of the strongest individuals on the planet after his battle with katakuri
that's basically the same reasoning around the whole giantification process that the marines want to achieve. would the average giant defeat a yonkou, a commander? a shichibukai? a revolutionary commander? probably not, but that doesn't mean they are not better than your average marine with a musket.
same here, your average samurai might be stronger than our average marine, but it's still no match for luffy..how the higher speheres will compare though? for that we have to wait..until now we are dealing with basically fodder. -
He seems a little bit to far to intervene.
I expect Tama will be used to stall Luffy for a bit while reinforcements come in for the Kaido side (Hawkins), then at some point Law would swoop in to save the day.
-

Sentamaru, Jimbei, Magellan, that guy that was shooting Zoro in skypia… And I think we are supposed to take Burguess seriously
Anyway I expected him to be fodder but I had to wait for it to actually happen before I can criticize it. I don't think one of the strongest of Wano being that much of an easy target for Luffy help to portray the image of Wano we were given.
We don't know how Kaido took over. We just know he did and killed(?) Oden with the Shogun. Samourais are still around as far as we know. I imagined it more as partnership myself.
-
It seems that there can be many Yokozuna, so this guy might just be the scrubbiest of them.
-
where are the lion's paws? he had them last chapter..but they are gone in this one..inside the guy's trousers?
also i must say, i kinda like holdem character-wise
-
the guy can teleport
Not as far as he wants. It would probably take a couple of teleports to get there. To me the goggles are there to signify that he is far enough to not be able to intervene quickly. He could show up in the middle(If he leaves Bepo) but I don't see him being there for the initial contact.
