Chapter 972: I Am Oden, And I Was Born To Boil
-
-
Great Chapter.
PS: Kaido's pants do share same similarity with Katakuri's
-
Damn, RIP to a real one
-
Wonderful chapter and a fantastic closure to the flashback. Easily one of my Top 3.
-
I'm glad Kaido got rid of that old lady.

I'm glad Kaido got rid of that old lady.
People were so quick to put her distracting on Kaido, but it was never really clear if it was actually his orders or not. I am surprised he was mad enough about it to kill her though.

It doesn't count if kaidou told her to distract oden or not. If he really cared about that, he would give oden a second fair battle, not beat the grandma.
-
So Kaido is indeed honourable. Great that this was mentioned, as some people seemed to have problems with how the fight between Kaido and Oden was handled. So this means Kaido was obviously weaker than Oden, as Oden declared that Kaido has to become stronger, right? Btw, I would love, if Oda would say that Kaidos favourite food is Oden.
I didn't imagine that the boiling would go that fast, but I enjoyed it.
Anyway I don't know if the flashback will end with this chapter, or if we get one or two more chapters and see Toki send them to the future, who knows tbh. And the promised future in 20 years seems all to be connected to Shirahoshi.
So Oden, decided the prophecy and not Toki, interesting.
After the word was sent to all the lords, there has to be some kind of war between them and Kaido or Kaido will simply overrun them. Can't wait for the next chapter. If this is indeed the last chapter of the flashback it would be a fitting ending.

Kaidou just killed Oden after agreeing if he survives the hour he's good
And people are saying he's honorable? lol

As far as not wanting people to interfere in his fights he seems to be, or more accurately, he has his own code I guess lol
-

It's very in-character of Kaidou actually, since one of the main things about him is wanting to die. He was so close to finally have his death and the granny stopped it.

As I understood it, if Kaido was serious, he ended Oden's suffering, because most of his body was already dead from the frying. I think if he had wanted to, he could have prevented the escape of all of Odens allies.

I mean clearly he does care to some extent if he killed someone over it.
-
It's been a while since Oda last drew the fishmen island outfits.
-
So is IM the great external power kozuki wanted to protect wano from and closed the borders…
-

You are assuming Kaido had his "hobby" at this point.
-

Katakuri wears them better
Moving to baggy pants was an understandable decision. Kaido looked kind of ridiculous in the flashback, a lot more like a typical One Piece character and less like he's ripped straight from a Tekken game.
-
Yeah, Kaido ain't got the legs for close-fitting leather pants.
-

Oden was already dead. He only endure the hour boiling to save his retainers.
-
You can actually see a smile in the cauldron, lol.

Im by extension, mostly the World Government and their Ancient Weapon(s), marching on the Ancient Kingdom and their close allies to whom the Kozuki clan belongs. Question is, why didn't they stand and fall by their side? Maybe the AK wanted them to be their contingency, thus leading to the creation of the Poneglyphs and Joyboy's promise/prophecy

I wouldn't take for granted that the flashback is over. The hour of legends took two chapters to actually happen and it seems appropriate to have the whole deal with the castle now since it's the scabbards having this flashback.
-
It is good to finally get to read it in comprehensible English. But seriously what happend to Fukurokujus head, it grew multiple times over those decades, is it a reference to something? Is it a tumor?
-
By far the best chapter of the arc so far.
-
Katakuri wears them better
Katakuri got his style from his dad. Dam, BM and kaidou really had a kid together…
-
So after this we go back to the assault on Onigashima then?
-
That Oden smile at the end is so D-esque. I wonder if the will of D extends to those who find One Piece?

I guess there's a chance that this act, and thus the flashback, isn't over, but the bengs seem to have come and gone. Oda didn't explicitly state it's over like he did with the other two acts, so it's hard to tell. Maybe the bengs are for the end of the flashback?
-

Currently they are stuck because Orochi destroyed all their ships.
Either we get traitor reveal, or Kyoshiro shows up as Denjiro.
-

we have the flashback of what happened before the flashback

Uh…
Katakuri was already 10 years old by the time of the God Valley incident...
Kaido was a rookie in that crew so he was clearly only in his teens at the time...He'd have had to knock up Big Mom when he was only a young child...

Obviously it was the Celestial Dragons/World Government or what would become the W.G….

Well the bengs started when Oden and the scabbards marched for Onigashima, so they probably signify the climax of the flashback. But there could be the wrap-up left.
-

I'm intrigued by the implications of Oden's speech.
I mean, this great power Oden spoke of, can't possibly be the marines, so what is it? Is he simply talking about the ancient weapons, or does the WG have something hidden that is far more powerful than anything we have seen yet.
-

I'm not positive, though the final comment sure sounds like it. Unless the flashback will also clear up what exactly happened between Neko and Inu on that last day, show the fall of Toki, detail how longnose guy set his hands on the swords and give new information on the traitor. One-chapter wrap up, then break and back to the wharf before Onigashima. Otherwise straight back to the present.
That extra chapter is not a given either though, we've seen more than enough of what comes next in the earlier flashback. Neko-Inu's feud can be over some stupid argument that snowballed due to losing Oden ; Kaido just had to fly to Kuri Castle and set it ablaze before the nine arrived ; until proven otherwise the spy-in-the-past could have been the shapeshifter hag ; and the present-day traitor reveal can wait until later on when said traitor takes direct action at a dramatic moment. For now we have enough tidbits that the rest can go untold, although Oda does love to spell everything out eventually.I'm less and less certain that the traitor can be a scabbard, however. Now we know they all went through the entire execution and would have died if not for Oden, so at this point I can't really picture any of them as still actively betraying his cause.
It really comes down to that Zou landing : only Kin, Kanjuro and Momo knew that Raizo was there, so Kaido had to hear it either directly from one of them, or undirectly through Doffy if and when he captured them. If it is Kanjuro (how could Kin or Momo be it ?), then his motivation had better be insanely good. -
I mean, this great power Oden spoke of, can't possibly be the marines, so what is it? Is he simply talking about the ancient weapons…
Maybe has to do with Zou. He's a megalithic creature of Ancient times, and he did something that required penance, thus walking until it basically can't anymore. I'm thinking the power Momonosuke has is related or equal to the power of Poseidon, if there are creatures like Zou still around, which there may not be. In that case Momonosuke can't be considered an Ancient Weapon, like say Shirahosi.
But it's worth considering I guess. Perhaps Zou was instrumental in Joy Boy's defeat. A weapon that the WG at the time was in control of, during the 100 years of erased history. But it looks as if the WG or whatever group it was before the WG's conception lost it's control and someone commanded it to walk for eternity.
-
I think the one big problem was Oden going along with Orochi's demands for five years. It just felt off to me. I feel like something like Oden getting lost at sea after the Roger Pirates disbanded, and his return to his death taking place all in one year.
-

"Take for granted"? It was literally announced to us at the end of this chapter that we'd return to the present in the next chapter.
-
I expected that the details with Toki sending them forward would be glossed over since the flashback was already running pretty long. Maybe we'll get it later when Momo and Hiyori meet up?
-
Maybe we'll get it later when Momo and Hiyori meet up?
Maybe. I re-read the earlier flashback, when Kinemon tells the tale of Oden to the Strawhats in the ruins of Kuri Castle : when you add it up with the current flashback and other hints that were previously dropped, there's enough information to leave the rest untold. The next flashback would be more relevant if focused on Hyori/Kyoshiro's side of the story, or even Orochi/Kaido ; not sure we need to go a third time over the fall of Kozuki either way.
-

No, what was announced is that the story will continue in the present. That might sound like it, but it doesn't necessarily imply next chapter we'll be back at the Onigashima raid. It could just as easily be a reference to the time-jump itself, specially with the way it's worded in viz.
-

He means the Alliance that defeated the Ancient Kingdom, and became the World Government/Celestial Dragons.

His head is huge because he's based on a mythical figure with a huge forehead, but without it he's a weird fusion between Enel and Ohm.
He must've eaten a devilfruit sometime after the flashback.

What "devil fruit"? It could easily be just a " natural phenomenon" like Chinjao.

All the praise of being a master ninja went to his head.

Cool Chapter. The visual of Oden's boiling and him dying while the city finish his sentence is cool. The snippets worked for some of the scabbards. I really like them hitting the ground running. If it's going to be his last words I probably would have gone for Oden always introducing himself with the born to boil line every time so that it feels recurrent and has more weight when he does it the last time.
The 5 year thing is still creating a disconnect and feel out of place in all this. Im curious how the whole flashback read in one sitting.
Bunch of ingrates. That poor old woman gave Orochi the throne and handed Kaido an easy win and all she gets for her trouble is death.
I read Oden discussion with Kaido as sarcasm which made it fun. Shinobu chose an odd time to claim they gonna win.

Indeed on point with your comment.

Kaidou somewhat has brought a slight strike of a real japanese shogun in my mind.
Everbody knows that a shogun does not always have to be loved by his citizen, things like execution of good guy bringing justice had came multiple time. Like that goemon story that oda used as a reference, for example. Before he put Oden to rest, he admired Oden's one hour show of spirit and madness, and like somebody here pointed, he wasn't specifically cared about the scabbard escaping, as he was so focused to this man.
Deep within, Kaidou must have a desire to test how strong he was compared to Oden, if it was another condition, but in a scenario of death execution, it would be weird too to perhaps put the boiling to end and wait for several weeks and put another rematch, just the two of them.
It just doesn't fit in that condition. And he's a criminal after all (a real bad pirate comes to my mind), so getting rid of a huge enemy with potential risk of destroying his plan is something he ought to do. He's not a fighting maniac.

He got those forehead gains.
-
The last page of the official says 973 drops on March first, but then Mangaplus (the site listing) says it drops on the eighth?
-
I thought the guy who shot those arrows was one of the Oniwabanshu, but I checked and is not in the team, so could it be… Tenguyama without his mask:ninja:
-
I've changed my favorite part from Orochi calling the people "trash" to Asura being astonished by how extremely childish Orochi is. 5/5 chapter - Orochi Fan Club President
